Newsletter 7 17th October 2016 Dear Mums, Dads & Carers Harvest Festival Just to remind you that we will be holding our Harvest Festival tomorrow, Tuesday 18th October at 1.20pm in St Benedict’s church. Please do come and join us. This year we are supporting two charities and would welcome donations of packaged/tinned food for Glastonbury Foodbank (they simply ask that donated items are in date and preferably with long dates to give them the best flexibility) or monetary donations for the Oxfam Haiti Hurricane Appeal – as the scale of the disaster unfolds it is apparent that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their homes and there is a real danger of a cholera epidemic unless help is rallied now. Please bring donations in to school tomorrow morning or there will also be a collection in Church. Mural A huge thank you to Jonathan Minshull and the children who worked with him in creating our wonderful new mural entitled ‘Pilgrimage and Hospitality’ in the entrance foyer. The mural depicts St Benedict who was born in 480 A.D. in Norcia, Italy. The mural also shows an evening landscape over Glastonbury with pilgrims walking up the Tor and sharing a meal of fish and loaves. Please do come and have a look at the mural for yourself. Thefts from packed lunches & of Pokemon Cards Unfortunately there have been a few thefts from packed lunches in Year 3. We are taking this very seriously and are overseeing the packed lunches whilst awaiting delivery of lunch crates to keep the packed lunches secure. Also two children have had Pokemon cards taken - of course we would like these to be returned. If any child has an unexplained new bundle of Pokemon cards please let me know. As a result of these incidents Year 3 will no longer be allowed to bring Pokemon cards into school. New Teacher Exciting news – we will be having a new teacher after half term; Miss Stanbury is to be married during half term and will return as Mrs Rood! I’m sure you will join me in wishing her every happiness for the future. JBs Please note JBs will be held at St Benedict’s School on Tuesday 1st November as St John’s School is closed for an Inset Day. Clubs Please note there will be no after school clubs on Thursday 3 rd November as the PFTA are holding ’Movie Time’ in the school hall from 3.30 – 5.30 pm. The film showing is ‘Zootropolis’. Tickets will be available soon from the school office priced £2.50 per ticket, to include hotdog, popcorn and drink. Scarlet Fever We have been informed that one of our pupil’s has been diagnosed with scarlet fever. Although scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, it should be treated with antibiotics to minimise the risk of complications and reduce the spread to others. The symptoms of scarlet fever include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. This is followed by a fine red rash which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body. On more darkly-pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like 'sandpaper'. The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth. If you think you, or your child, have scarlet fever: • See your GP or contact NHS 111 as soon as possible • Make sure that you/your child takes the full course of any antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. • Stay at home, away from nursery, school or work for at least 24 hours after starting the antibiotic treatment, to avoid spreading the infection If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed. You can find more information on NHS choices: www.nhs.uk. Maths question of the fortnight True or False Below are some examples of some true or false maths questions you could ask your child. Can they say why it is true or false? Year 3 - 38 is a multiple of 8? The largest 3 digit number that can be made from the digits 2, 4 and 6 is 264. Are these number sentences correct? 597 + 7 = 614; 804 - 70 = 744; 768 + 140 = 908. Year 4 - 324 is a multiple of 9? Are these number sentences correct? 6.7 +0.4 = 6.11; 8.1 0.9 = 7.2. The largest 4 digit number that can be made from the digits 5, 6 and 7 is 576. Year 5 - When I count in 10's I will say the number 10100? Are these number sentences correct? 6.17 + 0.4 = 6.57; 8.12 - 0.9 = 8.3. The largest 6 digit number that can be made from the digits 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 is 572 634. Year 6 - When I count backwards in 50s from 10 I will say -200? The temperature is -3. It gets 2 degrees warmer. The new temperature is -5. Can you create your own for you child to solve? Can your child create one for you to solve? Wishing you and all of the children a fun and restful half term holiday.
