Serving the needs of our diverse Jewish community for more than 119 years. February 2016 | Shevat—Adar 5776 Rabbi’s Message 120 Years Old: A Once in a Lifetime Event My Bubbe (grandmother), may she rest in peace, performed a ritual (of sorts), when someone with whom she was within earshot had a multiple/serial sneeze. After each sneeze she would offer a word or a few words, in Yiddish, when translated, went something like this: First sneeze: “To health!” Second sneeze: “To living!” Third sneeze: “To long years!” Fourth sneeze: “With your spouse …” Fifth sneeze: “until 120 years!” And after the fifth sneeze, she would either begin the cycle again, or call the doctor. As a child (whose maternal grandparents lived with us), my cousins and I would laugh whenever we heard our grandmother pronounce this ritual. As much as we heard Yiddish regularly spoken by my grandparents and their generation, and, to a lesser extent, by my parents and their generation, the Yiddish still sounded funny to our ears. But it was also the expectation: Would there be a second sneeze, or a third sneeze? Could we make it all the way to a “royal flush” of sneezing? “G-d bless you!” or “Gesundheit !” had nothing on us. And there was also the mystery of 120 years. These were surreal years when the United States was commemorating the Civil War Centennial against the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement and, looking forward, dreams of space exploration. 120 years seemed like an eternity. As I grew older, I learned that it was Moses who reached 120 years old who inspired my grandmother's ritual. In some Jewish circles it was commonplace to wish someone “120 years,” usually in Hebrew or Yiddish, upon reaching any plateau in their life. Today, medical experts say that advancements in health could bring our children close to that achievement. Recently, my cousin Sadie celebrated her 106th birthday. (http://www.necn.com/news/new-england/106-YearOld-Attributes-Her-Longevity-Partly-to-Beer-347300052 .html and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/106year-old-says-beer-is-the-secret-to-her-longevity_56460 125e4b08cda348866b6) I feel somewhat embarrassed that I am wishing her a paltry 14 years. Why has Jewish tradition singled out Moses? Why not Abraham at 175 years? Or Sarah at 127 years? Or Methuselah at 969 years? The answer, I believe, is not in the number itself, although 120 is round and can more easily be “worked” by numerologists (12 tribes x 10 commandments). It was also about what was going on in the life of the Jewish people when Moses reached that plateau. Yes, it represented the end of Moses’ life; but for the Jewish people, it represented reaching the Promised Land. “120” represents, not an end, but a transition to something new and different, a celebration of continuity. 2016 marks the 120th year of the Pine Brook Jewish Center. It will be a time that we “remember our past, live the present, and trust the future.” It is a celebration of our lives; but, like that moment 3,200 years ago when our ancestors stood with Sinai behind us and the promised land of Israel in front of us, we have the privilege to march forward confidently to make our destiny. May the Pine Brook Jewish Center and its members proudly go forward as heirs to our brave ancestors in this coming, momentous year. 3.5” x 2.125” The Candlestick is published 10 times a year reaching more than 400 families. ads may be purchased on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis, pro-rated for advertisers who begin midyear. The Candlestick PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE JONATHAN COHEN President As the New Year gets into full swing, we should look forward to a year full of programming and events at PBJC. I would like to raise some awareness well in advance of some items of interest for all congregants. Hopefully everyone is now are that during 2016, we will be celebrating our 120th year as the essential center of the Jewish community in Montville, and 20 years since the merger with Lake Hiawatha Jewish Center. Judy Gothelf has graciously offered to head up a committee that will plan a proper commemoration of these milestones, including establishing a visual display incorporating many artifacts that will be provided by our members. We will also be displaying many of the items – photographs and documents that were donated previously to the Jewish Historical society, which provide a rich history of PBJC’s past. All members are encouraged to join in the creation of this history, particularly as an opportunity to show their own families Jewish journeys that have brought us each to PBJC. More on this come in future candlestick articles and communications from Judy’s committee. Throughout our 120-year history, we have dealt, with varying degrees, with the scourge of anti-Semitism. Mark Roffman, one of our past Presidents has pointed out and asked, who, more so than the Jewish community, should understand the scourge of bias and hate against anyone, simply predicated on religious beliefs? Mark has specifically called out the suffering of the Syrian refugees, and requested the support of EXEC and the Chevra to engage the congregation in finding meaningful ways to show our support of the Syrian refugees. We heartedly agreed. Mark will establishing a committee in the next few weeks to examine the most appropriate ways for PBJC to help, and I would ask everyone to strongly considering supporting this committee by participating in their activities. And lastly, on May 1st, Jerry Oppenberg will be spearheading our annual Yom Hashoah program. Due to the age and frailty of all but the youngest victims, it’s difficult to find those with first hand exposure. This year’s program will be quite different than what we have previously been exposed to. Jerry has been able to bring the producers of a documentary on the S.S. St. Louis – a ship loaded with over 900 Jewish refugees looking to escape Nazi Germany after Kristallnacht – but were refused entry by Cuba, the U.S. and other countries. The documentary – “Complicity” (a single word name here is most powerful) should be mandatory education. Join us as we celebrate Pine Brook Jewish Center's 120th Anniversary Saturday, May 14, 2016 7:30 pm. Details to Follow. I hope to see everyone at all of these events, and will look forward to keeping you updated on the additional programming events we will be offering. As always, my door is always open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery programs. 4 The Candlestick RELIGIOUS SCHOOL MARY SHEYDWASSER Religious School Director Throughout our history whenever Jews moved into town, the first thing they did was establish a synagogue, a school and a hospital. For us, communal institutions were of paramount importance. It is not surprising that so many synagogues were named Jewish Community Centers because that is exactly what they were, the place where the members of the community came together. A generation ago, many Jews used the synagogue as their social base; that is where their friends were found and where their activities took place. The Hebrew word for congregation or community is Kehilla. We at Pine Brook Jewish Center Religious School are striving to create a Kehilla Kedosha, a holy community where our students continue to identify with their Jewish identity and carry on with the legacy of l’dor v’dor, one generation to the next. Continuing the tradition of a Kehilla, our kitah gimel parents and students came together today to learn about Shabbat and the meaning of the Kiddush. More importantly, they collectively learned more about one another and shared past family experiences. Take a moment and consider the following questions to stimulate a discussion with your peers and children. • • • • • • • • Describe an instance which you were especially aware of being Jewish? Which person who you have known has had the most impact on your life as a Jew? What do you value most about being Jewish? What kind of Jew makes you feel most proud? What is your most prized possession? Have you ever felt embarrassed being a Jew? Did you celebrate Shabbat in your home when you were a child? What is one piece of Jewish advice or wisdom you received from your parents? Though we are in the midst of winter, spring is on the horizon. The holiday Tu B'Shevat signifies a renewal with the magic of nature. It is a festival that symbolizes love for Israel and which shows our feelings for trees and plants as living fruitful things. Let us at PBJC work together as a community and continue to support Israel by planting a forest together! FRIENDSHIP CLUB BETTY CRANE Friendship Club Coordinator The Friendship Club began in 2000 with a grant from MetroWest. Currently, we have about 250 members from Morris and Essex counties. We meet at various times of the year depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to museums, attend concerts and shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a Shabbat dinner in November, and evening programs. We have about eight events a year, several with bus transportation. Dues are $25 annually. The Friendship Club ended 2015 on a high note! Our joint meeting with the Socially Active Single Seniors group on Tuesday evening, December 15 was a tremendous success. Rhonda Denet, a vocalist and songwriter, entertained us with Motown music and everyone enjoyed this special program. We were rocking in our seats, dancing in the aisles and singing along with Rhonda.. Afterwards, we celebrated Hanukkah with refreshments including jelly doughnuts and a delicious sheet cake. If scheduling permits, we hope that Rhonda will perform for us again sometime this year. Our annual mid-winter brunch will take place on Sunday, February 28 in Scheinman Hall and hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative this year! Our guest speaker is Rabbi Finkel who will discuss “Believe It or Not – The Countdown to Passover Has Begun.” A flyer with complete details will be mailed to our members in early February. In order to provide ample seating and food, please remember to respond no later than Wednesday, February 24. As a reminder, the annual dues statement for the year 2016 will be included in our February mailing. Since we are no longer receiving funding from the synagogue, we hope that you will make every effort to support The Friendship Club. In this way, we can continue to provide quality programming for our group. Please return the form to me at your earliest convenience and thank you in advance for your cooperation. Looking forward to seeing you at the brunch on Sunday, February 28. CHAVERIM SHELL RUSSO Coordinator Chaverim of PBJC are a vibrant group of adults 60+ who meet at 11:30 a.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the Center. Elaine Nachshen 973-263-0407 or email at [email protected]. As anticipated, SASS and The Friendship Club joint meeting on December 15 was a huge success. Approximately 70 people in attendance enjoyed a fabulous performance by Rhona Denet. Her magnificent voice, personality and style kept everyone wanting to hear more. Hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s brought us back to our past. We were unable to stay still in our seats. Some of us got up and danced while others swayed in their seats and sang along to the music. A well-earned standing ovation led to an encore of “The Twist” which got many more up on their feet to dance. We are hoping to have Rhonda back again in the spring with her duet partner. More information will follow on what will be another great evening. SASS ended 2015 and started 2016 with a group of us going to an early movie and then out to dinner on New Year’s Eve. Several continued the evening at one of our homes, had a nosh and watched the ball drop on TV to welcome 2016. Earlier at the restaurant we toasted the New Year with Plum wine and as always had a great time together. The following is a tentative list of programs coming up for our group. Late January: Another dinner evening, February: “The Producers” at Montclair State, March: “Girl’s Room” at the Parsippany Playhouse, April: “My Mother, My Sister and Me” at the Bickford Theatre, May: “La Diva Tenors” concert at the Wayne Y The Rosen Performing Arts Center.
