Winter 2006 Messages from Bob in this issue PGA Tour Senior Champions Tour LPGA Tour Boundary Oak News Nor Cal Golf News Trivia - Gift Certificates PGA Tour Golf equipment has become so ridiculous in high tech technology that the USGA for whatever reason cannot monitor the distance that space-age engineering produces for the manufacturers. If a touring professional cannot hit his drive 300 yards, he is non-competitive. 350 yd. drives are not an uncommon occurrence. Bubba Watson shot a third round 66 in the Hawaiian Open, hitting a wedge on the 556 yd. par 5 18 at Wailea Country Club. What was the length of his drive? At the Mercedes Championship there were 12 drives over 400 yards. Jason Gore and Lucas Glover had how many drives over 400 yards? There doesn't seem to be any charisma THUNDERBOLDTS • Boundary Oak Golf Course Newsletter with the new players. I enjoyed playing with Palmer, Chi Chi, Trevino, Player and even though he wasn't one of my favorites, Nicklaus. The top money winners Watson/Stadler - fun to watch when he hits bad shots - Haas Irwin - Quigley just don't have the crowd appeal which gave the Senior Tour its appeal. Perhaps Peter Jacobsen, Greg Norman, John Jacobs and Gary McCord will provide the spark that is needed for the tour to compete with its younger counterparts, especially the up and coming LPGA Tour. Boy, (no pun intended) has this changed. It is not only a pleasure to watch LPGA events, I find myself learning swing thoughts from the entire field. Boundary Oak News/Nor Cal Golf News The golf industry is in a state of flux with housing development companies building courses to sell homes and flooding the market. Golf is becoming very expensive (equipment - green fees) producing a decline in new golfers and juniors. Boundary Oak is operated with an enterprise fund that has shown a profit since 1980. We have always prided ourselves affordably for all of our golfers, for a 37 year old championship course in good to excellent condition. Unfortunately, as rounds decline due to courses being built on a diminishing market of available golfers green fees will be very difficult to maintain. Maintenance costs have been on the rise mainly due to water, fuel and utility costs. Hopefully we will have an increase in play in '06. New courses being built will have green fees that are really not affordable for the average golfer. To cite some examples: the City of San Francisco spent $23 million to rebuild Harding Park, the City of Pleasanton reportedly spent $30 million to build their public golf course. Who is going to pay for, not only the capitalization to build these facilities, but equally important, the maintenance to keep these courses in championship condition in order to justify the green fee structure? Unfortunately the debt service will eventually be passed to the City involved, unless the golfing public will pay the skyrocketing fees.
