“The Story of the Flood”
Reading Strategy: Identify Chronological Order
The events in the first chapter of Genesis are told in chronological order, the order in which
they happen in time. Transitional words and phrases, like first, next, before, on the third day,
and finally, help make the chronological order clear.
A. DIRECTIONS: On the lines, number each sentence to show the correct chronological order of
these events from the first chapter of Genesis. Use the context clues to help you.
Then God separated light from darkness, and it was the first day.
Last of all came the first human beings.
On the third day, God gathered the waters together, let dry land emerge, and covered the
land with vegetation.
Then, on the seventh day, God rested.
Fourth came the sun, moon, and stars to signal day and night.
In the beginning, there was a void.
God created fish and birds on the fifth day.
On the second day, God separated the sky from the water.
B. DIRECTIONS: Sum up the story of the flood in five sentences, using chronological order.
