About John Paul II Center
John Paul II Center for Special Learning,
Inc. provides a unique educational and
social program for children and young adults
with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are the only Catholic school in the
greater Berks County area serving students
with this kind of special need.
Board of Directors
2013–14 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Like everyone else, people with disabilities
have the capacity to make significant contributions to the community and to the
world by utilizing their God-given talents.
John Paul II Center for Special Learning was
founded to provide each student the opportunity to develop this potential.
We educate the whole child, academically,
socially, emotionally, and spiritually. The
teachers and staff of John Paul II Center help
the students grow through a child-centered
curriculum based on a philosophy that each young person is a unique individual. Teachers strive to nurture spiritual development by emphasizing the values of sharing, cooperation, and respect of others through instruction and example. We serve
children ages three to 21 of all faiths and religious beliefs, and have traditionally served Catholics and non-Catholics in equal
numbers. Those students who are Catholic are prepared to receive their sacraments.

Thank You, Mike Mizak!
The overall focus of our educational program is to accelerate a student’s growth through individual attention. Classes are offered from preschool age to the secondary level, including multi-disabilities.
June marked the end of an era at John Paul II Center for Special Learning.
Michael J. Mizak, Jr. stepped down from the helm at JPII. Mike served as
the Chairman of the JPII Advisory Board for 25 years and Chairman of the
newly formed Board of Directors for this past year. He has guided the school
through many ups and downs, highs and lows – always keeping our precious
children at the center of everything that we do. Words cannot express the
gratitude that everyone involved with John Paul II Center has for Mike’s
guidance, leadership and love. Without him, JPII would not be the amazing
school that it is today. Thank you Mike for all you have done for us!

Ways to Support
There are several different ways to support John Paul II Center for Special Learning. You may make a donation to the Guiding
Hands Annual Fund, become a sponsor of, purchase tickets for or make an auction purchase while at our Annual Legacy Gala
or by supporting other special events that may be held throughout the year. You also may support a student in our Annual
Walk-a-thon held each October or make a gift in memory or honor of someone. Below are the different methods you can use
to make your donation.

Dear Friends,
This report shows the combined efforts of John Paul II Center, Berks
County and the surrounding community in making an impact in the lives
of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
For some families it is your support that makes a difference in whether or
not their child attends school here or an adult receives our services long
after their formal education has ended. Your involvement affected the
lives of 67 families this past year.
We just completed our first full year of incorporation along with a new
Board of Directors. Our Board is comprised of community leaders who
advise, direct and support the school to continue our mission of providing a program which educates and serves those with disabilities. Their
vision is one of sustainability, strengthen and growth. They have accomplished a great deal in their first year, a year to shape the future of John
Paul II Center.
As you look through this report you will see a tremendous amount of
work accomplished in a year. It only gives you a small glimpse of the
passion and dedication our staff demonstrates every day. Our administrative staff works behind the scenes to operate the school and raise funds
to keep tuition manageable. Our teachers, assistants and therapists work
with our students on a daily basis to instill our Catholic values, reach
independence and their God-given potential.
Make checks payable to John Paul II Center for Special
Learning, Inc., indicating, if desired, that you have a designated area that you would like to support and mail them to:

Credit Card:
Credit card payments can be made at
www.johnpauliicenter.org
or by phone at 610-777-0605. Visa and Master Card are
both accepted.
Gifts of Stocks:
Giving of stocks or bonds may provide greater tax benefits.
If you have owned securities for more than one year and the
fair market value has increased since you purchased them,
you can avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction equal to the fair market value.
Planned Gifts:
A planned gift is sometimes called a deferred gift, in that it
does not affect your current cash flow or assets and it is easy
to change if your circumstances change. This type of gift
may also save you estate taxes later. There are several ways to
make a planned gift:
Bequest
Charitable Gift Annuity
Charitable Remainder Trust
Charitable Lead Trust
Life Estate Reserve
Insurance Policy Beneficiary
By making a planned gift to John Paul II Center, you will
become a member of the Halo Society. By leaving a special
gift to the school in your Last Will and Testament, retirement assets or deferred gift you are helping us to build a
stronger foundation for the school to continue its great
service for years to come. For more information on the Halo
Society, please contact Becky Burton, Advancement Director, at 610-777-0605 or [email protected].
Matching Gifts:
Many companies and corporate foundations match gifts to
non-profits, such as John Paul II Center for Special Learning, Inc. Contact the human resources office at your employer to inquire about their matching gift program.
I am sure with your continued prayers and support John Paul II Center
will grow and flourish for the benefit of God’s most precious children.
Please know we pray for you and your intentions. Together we can
achieve great success!

Brian Smith had been a student at John Paul
II Center since he was 7 years old. His smile
was contagious and made everyone happy that
he was around. After graduation, Brian began
attending Prospectus Berco on a part time basis
and also is volunteering in the community.
Brian is enjoying his time in the community and
has been keeping very busy. Brian has also made
many new friends in his room at Prospectus.
Jared Soja attended JPII for 18 years and fortunately for the staff that has watched him grow up
into a wonderful young man, he has remained
at JPII and is attending New Horizons each
day. Jared loves music and loves to dance! He is
enjoying his life as a consumer in the New Horizon’s Day Program and is able to continue music
therapy with Ms. Long. Jared is able to stop by
and visit with all of his old school friends.
Boy Scouts - Pack 222
John Paul II Center for Special
Learning has the only special
needs scouting troop in the Hawk
Mountain Council. Pack 222
meets twice a month during the
lunch hour. The troop is guided by
Intermediate teacher, Shelly Kreska
and volunteer leaders, Jim Kaucher
and George Shiels. As with all Boy
Scout programs, ours is a program
for young men that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship,
and develops personal fitness. The
highlight of each year is participating in the Pinewood Derby.

A record number of seven students graduated
from JPII this year. Everyone is so proud of
all that these young men and women have
accomplished and wish them well. They will
be missed by everyone.
Gina Ciabattoni was a student at JPII for 12
years and often she would be found helping
out in the Primary Class with the younger
students assisting the teacher wherever she
needed help. Gina has been the recipient of
Employee and Student of the year. Everyone
at JPII knows if they need something completed to just ask Gina! Gina is currently working
at Freedom Auto Group and volunteering for
Berks Encore at their Strausstown Center.
Jackie Cracchiolo was a student at JPII for
2 years and is currently exploring various
employment opportunities within the community. Whenever people saw Jackie they would
comment on the great smile that she always
wore. Jackie liked working with animals at the
ARL, working at Crowne Plaza and helping at
Columbia Cottage.
Jamal Rios greeted everyone each day with a
smile for the 6 years that he attended John
Paul II Center. Jamal loved dancing and singing in Music Therapy with Ms. Long. He was
also very close in his relationship with God.
He loved participating and singing with Mrs.
K. in liturgical music and praising the Lord in
Mass through song and sign. After graduation he began attending Prospectus Berco full time. He has made many friends but
says he can’t wait to come back for Prom!
Nicholas Santarelli began at JPII in 2008. Nick is a tremendous artist who designed last year’s holiday card for us. Nick loved
Art Therapy class as well as being with his friends throughout the day. Nick was always a happy student that brightened the
day of those he came into contact with. Nick volunteers at various sites in his local community. He loves animals and worked
at the ARL walking dogs and interacting with the cats.
Rachel Sensenig traveled from Lancaster County to JPII each day for the past 6 years. Since graduating in June she has been
attending Lighthouse Vocational Services in Lancaster on a Part-Time basis. Rachel recently sent an email stating that she is
cooking dinner with her mother, attending Lighthouse and really likes it. She has made many new friends and has adjusted
well.

JPII Gives Back
Occupational Therapy
At John Paul II Center, the occupational therapist collaborates with the teachers and staff to develop activities and
lessons to improve students’ academic and daily living skills. The therapist also provides direct services and will suggest
assistive technology and modifications to tasks to help the student be successful.
Make-A-Wish Foundation
Each and every day the importance of helping others is taught at JPII. During Catholic Schools Week
this year, the students collected coins for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They chose to help this charity
since many of them had been recipients of their wish at some point in their lives. At the end of the
campaign a representative from the Foundation came to receive a check from our students for $1,350!
Stuffed Animals Donated to Pediatric Patients
As a special treat for the students during Catholic Schools Week, Animaland came to JPII and each
student was able to make their own stuffed animal. Rather than keep the animals for themselves, the
students donated them to the children in the pediatric unit at the Reading Hospital & Medical Center.

School Student Vans
This year’s fund a need request at the conclusion of the live auction was to fund the purchase of new school
student vans to transport our students to and from various field trips within the community. Due to an overwhelming outpouring from those in attendance at the Gala, JPII students are now on the move! Two, nine passenger
vans were purchased this summer and are now on the road. Keep your eyes open because you are sure to
spot our students out and about!

My teacher asked me to share some things that I like about John Paul II
Center …The first thing that I want to tell you about is that I enjoy working
in the classroom as the “Office Manager.” I actually love doing all the
jobs throughout the school independently. I also love being able to
see my friends each day even if it is out of my peripheral vision. I have
so many friends at JPII and that is important to me. Being able to work in
the community is important to me also. Our teachers are teaching us to
become adults and getting us ready for the community and the big world
after graduation.

Art therapy teaches our students about different
art mediums, helps develop fine motor skills, works
with students with sensory issues, and requires that
a student stays on task and follows directions. It is
a method for students to be creative and have
positive self expression, and is a confidence builder
because it is a very accepting therapy practice.
Creative drama helps to improve speech and
language skills, creativity and imagination, gross
motor skills, spatial awareness and relations, and
the ability to follow directions.

Music is used therapeutically
to create positive changes
in human development and
behavior. Using the six basic
elements of music—rhythm,
melody, harmony, timbre,
dynamics, and form—students
and therapist engage in the
physical act of playing a
variety of instruments. The
therapist uses voice and
movement, to help each
child’s system learn to handle
new ways of responding to
sensory input.

the students the music
necessary to participate
in Mass and services. She
also instructs the students
who are preparing for the
sacraments and assists
the teachers with religious
instruction.

Businesses in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania may reallocate money that they
pay for state taxes to offer tuition assistance at John Paul II Center. Both the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit
(OSTC) programs allow businesses to receive a 90% tax credit if donating for two
consecutive years and up to a 75% tax credit if donating for one year. This means
that if your business pays certain state income taxes, your donation could end up
costing you NOTHING! The dollars that your business would pay to the State in
taxes will instead be diverted to JPII, in satisfaction of your Pennsylvania tax liability.
We extend a special thanks to the companies who have provided scholarship
assistance for many students at JPII through EITC and OSTC. For more information
on how you can join this list of participants and help the students at JPII, please
contact Becky Burton, Advancement Director at [email protected].

Speech Therapy
The focus of Speech and Language support is to teach our students to communicate appropriately in school, at home,
and within the community. We teach the students to use language to start conversations, respond to questions, request
preferred activities, reject non-preferred activities, and to communicate with friends and staff. Speech, language, and psychological services are provided by the Berks County Intermediate Unit through Act 89.
