I recently “Once We Were Brothers” by Ronald H. Balson that has been on my list for years. I think the reason I put it off for so long is because it is over 1,100 pages and just seemed too daunting. What a mistake on my part!!! The rainy, cooler days of late are a welcome change. We see the difference in the number of people who are visiting our open houses and the number of calls we are receiving from people who have an interest in exploring the possibility of selling their homes. Inventory is still dreadfully low and houses that are properly priced and show well sell quickly—simple as that. If you would like a free market analysis on your home just give us a call. We would love to add you to our list of satisfied clients, customers and friends!!! A completely engrossing story of two boys— once as close as brothers but who end up on opposite ends of the holocaust. This is not a wartime novel. It takes place between modern day Chicago and Poland during the Nazi occupation. Ben Soloman recognizes Elliot Rosenzweig, a wealthy philanthropist, as a former SS office known as “The Butcher of Zamosc.” The story unfolds as Ben hires an attorney to take his case. The story reveals that the Nazi was formerly Piatec, who was abandoned and taken in by Ben’s family only to be betrayed by him during the occupation. This is a completely riveting story and the pages will just fly by as you’re reading. I strongly recommend it and really think it should be turned into a movie. MARKET UPDATE Some notes on the local real estate market condition. Generally speaking the market is slowly rising. There will be some hiccups in all prices ranges due to inventory levels, financing and time of year, but here are some statistics that might provide a focus. C In 2012 at this time there were 16,370 pending foreclosures. This year only 6,881. C Sales volume for the three summer months in 2012 totaled 22,853. Summer 2013 was 2.8% higher with 23,499 sales. Volume was greater and sales prices were higher!! C Total number of listings for sale was 6.6% higher in August than July. July reported 20,049 and we begin September with 21,382 We consider 30,000 listings to be the norm. C In August, 9,807 new listings were added compared to 9,597 last year at this time for a 2.2% increase. These are marginal increases but importantly—increases. We are hoping to see continued increases in the number of listings as we approach the season, which will probably result in a market that—based on price point—will be neither a buyer ‘s nor seller’s market MOVIE REVIEW There is a movie showing, “Blue Jasmine” starring Cate Blanchett, which I think will get her a Best Actress nomination. Jasmine (Cate) is married to an extremely wealthy businessman Hal (Alec Baldwin) who is not unlike Bernie Madoff. When Hal wants to dump her for another woman, Jasmine exposes him, he goes to prison and hangs himself, his son hates her and she moves into her sister’s modest apartment in San Francisco to live with her and her children while trying to pull herself together. Her sister and her ex-husband lost all their lottery winnings investing with Hal, Jasmine cannot get used to not being rich and pampered, she takes a dental assistant job and gets sexually harassed, she hates her sister’s fiancée, and on and on and on . . . But trust me when I say you will really enjoy this movie.
