Penguins - Kingfisher Special School

A Guide for Parents
Summer Term 2017
Part 1
Topic –
‘Looking Good, Feeling Fit’
Penguins
General Information
The Penguins’ class is a Total Communication Environment, this enables the
children to develop communication skills and support the learning process
through the use of real objects, photographs, symbols and ‘Signalong’ to
reinforce the modelling of speech and language in the correct context.
The teacher, Emma Hamnett, along with teaching assistants, Catherine Hunter,
Thomas Winterburn and Fateha Begum work as a team to support your child to
explore the world around them, enabling them to develop independence and
confidence as a learner. The Penguins’ lunchtime supervisor, Julie Henshaw,
supports the class over the lunchtime period.
The Penguins is an Early Years Foundation Stage class of Reception aged
children who share a learning style that requires a structured environment and
daily routine, through which each child can enjoy a personalised curriculum to
enable them to gain new skills to take their learning forward. The children take
part in daily class teaching sessions and a range of adult-directed activities and
both small groups and 1-to-1 sessions activities that build on developing skills
and experiences.
The Penguins’ class includes children at different stages in their learning
journey and the environment and learning opportunities that the children
enjoy reflects and celebrates this. Based upon observations and assessments
individual targets are set for each child that focus upon the Spiritual, Moral,
Social and Cultural aspects of learning. Developing independence, whilst
nurturing consideration and tolerance of those around us is a continual theme
throughout the Penguins’ school day.
The topic this half-term is ‘Looking Good, Feeling Fit’.
This half term the Penguins are looking forward to making a visit to Foxdenton
Park each week. Our visits to the park will support our understanding of the
local environment and give us opportunities to explore different apparatus and
equipment as part of our P.E. activities.

actions and activities and use the photographs
to make our own class book

as balls, bikes and parachutes to make
different pictures inspired by the artist

how we use them
How You Can Help:
English

Read the story book ‘Doing the Animal Bop’ – use different musical instruments or
objects from around the home to make sounds for the different animals in the story

Take the story, animals and instruments outside and make movements linked to each
animal and sound to make your own movement story

Using the focus of the big book ‘Here are My Hands’ – take photographs of your child
and/or siblings and friends doing activities or playing with different toys and then talk to
your child about what they are doing in the photograph – build up a collection of
different photographs to make your own book

Take photos of objects and support your child in matching the object to the correct
photograph – can they find the object by listening to the name? Can they find the
correct picture by listening to the name label
Mathematics

During this half term, the children will continue to develop their understanding of
number using nursery rhymes ‘3 or 5 Green Bottles’ and ‘Five Little Frogs’ We will be
changing the rhyme to do lots of different counting actions such as printing, splashing,
bowling and using ice balloons to find the objects as we count and sing

With your child you could make up your own counting rhymes using different fruits and
vegetables – as you enjoy the rhyme you can make different actions to link the
movement to the number count, such as printing, chopping, digging, washing the
fruit/veg
Science –


Humans – focus on the actions and movement of different parts of the body – make a
sequence of activities for:
-
Hands – rolling Playdoh, clapping, stirring ingredients, painting
-
Feet – kicking a ball, using a foot spa, jumping on the trampoline
-
Mouth – blowing bubbles, drinking from a different cup, chewing and biting different
textured foods
Focus on aspects of personal care such as brushing teeth and washing hands and
support your child to develop their independence and skills
