Homonyms Nutrition and Writing Grade 5 Objectives: Students will be able to… - define homonym and provide examples - use a dictionary (online or text) as a tool for discovery - work in a group to compose a list of homonyms -understand the meanings of words in homonym pairs - use homonyms in a differentiated context Health Standards: Common Core Standards: Standard 3 Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health. W.5.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above.) W.5.5. With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. W.5.3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. Materials: Dictionary or access to internet for dictionary Work from Homonym Reading Lesson Class Time: approximately 30 minutes Connection/Introduction: (5-15 min.) - Review previous lesson on homonyms - Ask students to define homonym and provide examples Activity/Practice: (25-40 min.) 1. Students should review their Homonyms list/handout 2. Go over which word from each homonym pair relates to food 3. Have students list all words in alphabetical order 4. Have students write a sentence for every word 5. If students are unsure, they can consult their dictionaries again or work in pairs 6. Have students write a paragraph long story in which they include at least 5 pairs from the homonym list 1 7. Edit and review with a peer or in a small group. Rewrite and put on good paper for display Evidence of Learning/Assessment: (10-20 min.) - Alphabetical list Sentences Creative paragraph draft Creative paragraph final Wrap-Up/Reflection: - What other homonyms can you think of? - Could you use all these words in a story?
