March 2014 You know that being overweight puts you are at risk for diabetes, heart disease, gall bladder disease, some cancers and more. Did you also know that you are at risk for a type of arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the knee and hip joints? Maybe you already have painful joints? Why would excess weight make you at risk for arthritis? Because for every pound of weight you carry, you have 3 - 6 pounds of stress on your knee and hip joints. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, the resultant forces on your knees could be equivalent to 600 - 1200 pounds per step you take! Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by 30-60 pounds with each step. Research has shown that for each pound of weight you lose, you will lose 3 - 6 pounds of load exerted on each joint per step. Wouldn’t your joints welcome a reduced load? A small weight loss will take big pressure off your joints. Reduced pressure on your knees and hips could mean decreasing your risk for arthritis, reducing your pain, and decreasing your risk for a knee or hip replacement. If you have joint pain or want to prevent joint pain, and if you are overweight, try to lose about 4 pounds/month. By doing so, you will gradually reduce 12 - 24 pounds of stress in each knee and hip with each step!
