GUIDE TO VENTILATION – BS 5440 PART 2: 2009
Stadium Ventilation is a name you can trust. Our products are
widely specified and used by local Authorities, Housing
Associations, and Corgi installers because they meet the rigorous
standards set by the appropriate building regulations and British
standards.
Ventilation – How to get it right
Providing the correct amount of air for both combustion and
ventilation for appliances is very important. Insufficient air supply
can and has led to tragic results and it is equally important for
gas, oil or solid fuel burning appliances
In principle, the appliance not only burns the fuel but uses the
oxygen in air combustion. If sufficient fresh air is not provided
then the unit will use the available oxygen from the air in the
room. If the air supply to the appliance is inadequate, the flue
will fail to clear all of the combustion products and as a result
some will spill into the room itself. Ventilating compartments or
small closets is therefore particularly important.
When replacement windows and doors have been installed as
refurbishment work in a building, ventilation to a room is very
much reduced. It is therefore essential to provide the correct
amount of free air to appliances.
Other points worth noting are that it is not permitted to fit ‘fly
screens’ over vents or airbricks due to the possibility of the screen
clogging up and reducing the air flow; nor is it permissible to use
a ‘Hit and Miss’ vent that can be closed, stopping free air supply.
If an ‘extractor’ fan is fitted in the same room as the appliance,
an extra 50cm2 of ventilation per fan will be needed. This also
applies to powerful tumble dryers and cooker hoods etc. A spillage
test must be confirmed as satisfactory before the appliance is
used.
Working out the ‘Free Area’ for Gas Appliances
in Rooms
With reference to BS 5440 part 2 2009, there are no changes to
the formula used to calculate ventilation free area requirements.
British Standard BS5440 Part 2 2009 requires for open flue gas
appliances with input ratings exceeding 7kW to be provided with
5cm2 (5000mm2) of ‘Free Area’ per kW in excess of 7kW.
To convert to imperial: 1kW = 3412Btu/h
Method of Providing Air Supply
Ventilation for flueless appliances must always be direct to the
outside of the building.
Ventilation for open-flued appliances should be direct to the
outside of the building, but may be vented from another room
which in turn is vented to the outside. A vent supplying air to an
open-flue appliance shall not communicate with a room or
internal space containing a bath or shower.
Compartment Ventilation
Where appliances are fitted in compartments, closets or large
cupboards, additional ventilation of the compartment is required.
This applies to both ‘Open flued’ and ‘Room sealed’ units. The
chart below gives the basic requirements.

Positioning a Ventilator
Consider the occupants of a room when installing ventilation. Try
to locate the ventilator at high level so the cold draughts will not
pass through normally occupied areas of the room. Fitting a ‘Black
Hole’ helps reduce unwanted draughts.
Free Area
BS 5440 part 2: 2009 states that the equivalent area stated in
the vent manufacturer’s literature and/or marked on the air vent,
should be used wherever it is available, as this can differ
considerably from the free area measured at one end of the air
vent.
In absence of any such marking on a grille, louvre or duct, the sum
of the cross-sectional areas of the apertures should be used. For
a louvre, the areas should be measured at right angles to the
blades or vanes. For an air vent assembly, the free cross-sectional
area of the most restrictive component in an assembly should be
used to calculate the free area.

Where two or more appliances are installed in the same room or
compartment, whether or not they are supplied as a combined
unit, the aggregate rated input shall be used to determine the free
area.
Please note this information is a guide only. If in doubt refer to
current Building Regulations.
Air Supply
Heat producing appliances shall be installed so that there is an
adequate supply of air to them for combustion and for the
efficient working of any flue-pipe or chimney.
Acceptable Level of Performance
Any installation should be installed so that it:
a: Receives sufficient air for the proper combustion of the fuel
and operation of the flue.
b: Is capable of normal operation without the products of
combustion becoming a hazard to health.

‘BLACK HOLE’ VENTILLATION
‘Black Hole’ ventilation products provide the
answer to the dangerous practice of ventilators
being blocked off by occupiers who are being
annoyed by draughts. This makes an important
contribution to safety. New tests show that while
this works, the ventilator may not pass the required
amount of air when the appliance is operating.
The ‘Black Hole’ Magic Explained
Therefore it is important that a spillage test is
carried out as required by the British Standard and
corgi good practice.
However, when a heating appliance is operating, air is drawn
through the vent and actually speeds up within the constricted
air flow between the vortices, thus maintaining the correct amount
of air into the room or compartment to allow the fuel to burn
efficiently and flue gases to escape.

Stops wind blasting in – the air flow within the duct is
slowed down by the change of direction and by the
vortices formed, reducing draughts to a minimum.

cannot see through the ventilator and is
less likely to be worried that insects

flying insects like moths, crane
flies and mosquitoes are not
attracted in.
Absorbs outside noise –
reduces the penetration of
traffic noise. The internal construction
works as a sound baffle.
Allows air to be pulled through by the appliance
when it is operating
Safety – with draught and light annoyance problems
eliminated, the occupier will not be tempted to block off the
vent.
As outside wind pressure increases, a normal ventilator lets more
air through causing annoying draughts.
Inside the Stadium ‘Black Hole’ Ventilator, vortices are formed
behind the internal blades as the incoming air is forced to change
direction. The gap that the air is able to pass through narrows. As
wind pressure increases, the vortices grow, so reducing the total
air flow, finally tumbling and slowing to a trickle, thereby cutting
down annoying draughts.
When the appliance is not working, incoming air is reduced to a
minimum, even on windy days. The actual
physical difference is that of air blown or
drawn. The energy of the blown air (wind) is
quickly dissipated by the
restriction of the internal shape and the
vortices, while the drawn air will flow smoothly
round the vortices.
