Jonah is still playing with yoyo, until he sings back to the Chorus with, "I don't want to go". As he is singing he is walking down stage center towards the audience heading to Tarshish.) (He ducks his head and looks around him. He sneaks away and comes up to the two signs that say Tarshish and Nineveh. He follows the Tarshish one.) Song 1 "Jonah, are you Gonna Go?" He continues sneaking and looking over his shoulder. He does this until he makes his way back up to the stage. While he is in the audience the boat is being placed on the stage. Standing in front of the boat is a mariner waiting for passengers to board the boat. The Captain is in the boat checking to make sure the ship is ready to sail. The other mariner is reading a book and dozing off.) Mariner 1 Last call for Tarshish. Jonah Tarshish. Mariner 1 Tarshish Jonah Tarshish? There is no way you’re stopping at Nineveh on your way to Tarshish? No dropping off fish loads that go to Nineveh? So no pit stops to Nineveh? Mariner 1 If this boat goes anywhere with in a thousand miles of Nineveh, then I'll punch myself in the face for a whole day. Well then, boy, what's it going to be: Nineveh or Tarshish. (They walk onto the boat. The mariner kicks over the other snoozing mariner.) Mariner 2 (He is startled and tries to act like he is awake.) Oh, uh the 3 paper says clear skies all week Captain. Captain (sarcastic) Oh does it. Well, let up the anchor if you want to go anywhere. Mariner 2 Yes sir. (He pulls the anchor up.) Captain (Speaking very nostalgic as he says an old sailing quote.) "To reach a port we must sail, sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it. But we must not drift or lie at anchor.” Let's sail! Captain & Mariners (Singing) Hi ho, Hi ho, it's off to Tarshish we go….do do do (They begin singing a sailing tune as they leave port. The song begins to fade and is heard in the background as God's voice is heard.) Lord Wind, I am going to hurl you upon the sea. I need to get one of my children's attention who is on a boat on its way to Tarshish. Wind 1 Oh here I am, the wind, you have commanded me to storm and lift up the waves of the sea. Blow, Blow, Blow!!! (Psalms 147:18) He sends out his word, and melts them; he makes his wind blow and the waters flow. Whooosh, Whoosh, Whoosh!!! Hurl the wind this way and that! The mighty Power of God. Lord Goooooo!!! Great Wind! (Music begins for the wind dance. Wind dancers dance all about the stage and ship. You hear sounds of wind and rain within the song. There is a point in the song where the dancers are still dancing and the chorus sings. The scripture is spoken by the wind during the song.) Song2 Wind Dance (Inspired by Ps. 148:8 & Ps. 25) Chorus: I will go! As God Commands I will blow and I will rage I will storm and I will praise 4 For I am His to do His will In your chaos His Glory reigns Wind 1 Whoosh!! (Psalm 148:8) Fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! Wind 2 (Psalm 96:4) For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. Wind 3 (Psalms 104:3) He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; Wind 4 (Psalms 107:25) For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. (Song ends. The Wind dances all around the ship swaying and blowing fiercely. Sounds of wind and rain are heard all through out.) (The mariners are afraid, and each cried out to his god. As the mariners begin to speak, the music subsides, but the wind and rain still continue.) Mariner 2 (Rocking in the fetal position.) Oh god of the jelly beans, please save us. Bring about your eeewey gooey power and stop this wind! Mariner 1 (At the foot of the Captain) You promised we would make it to Tarshish alive! Save us from this storm. Help, you are my only hope oh Captain my Captain! Captain Oh great fish, oh the mighty sea that is water and wet and deep. Please keep us from drowning cause we have yet oh mighty fish to grow find and tails like you. (The fish whispers in his ear.) You want a ham sandwich? How can you think of food at a time like this? (The fish whispers again) The great mighty powerful smelly fish says that our only hope of survival is to dance the dance of Neptune. Lets link arms and sing and dance with all of our might boys!! And a one and a two and a three…… (singing) 5 "Oh Neptune our own Neptune" Mariner 2 (Both mariners singing with the Captain) This is crazy! What if we lighten the load by hurling some cargo off the ship? Captain What a good idea! (Puts fish up to his ear.) The fish thinks so too! (They hurl the cargo that is in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. Jonah goes down into the inner part of the ship and lies down and goes fast asleep.) (The captain goes down to get some cargo and sees Jonah asleep.) Captain What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish. Because our Neptune dance does not seem to be working. Mariner 1 Come on, let us cast lots, so we may know who is responsible for this evil that has come on us. (They cast lots, and the lot falls on Jonah. The Mariners and Captain immediately whip Jonah in the chair for interrogation and the Captain pulls out a huge flashlight and shines it in Jonah's face.) Captain (Starts to question Jonah) Tell us…. Mariner 2 (Puts hand on Captain's shoulder to stop him) Hey, hey, lets get a game plan figured out before we start our interrogation. Captain: Oh yes. Right on, boy. Good idea. Mariner 1: Why don't we try the good cop bad cop idea? Captain: Okay Mariner 1: You two be the good cops, and I’ll be the bad cop. 6 Mariner 2: Like in the movies. Captain: Oh Yeah! Sounds good. Mariner 1 So, you’re the good cop and I am the bad cop. Mariner 1 (Turning attention back to Jonah with bad cop angry voice) us on whose account this evil has come upon us. Captain (Bad cop voice clenching fist.) Yeah, and did you dance hard as you could on the Neptune Dance? Mariner 2 (looks with confusion toward the Captain and then talks to Jonah in a good cop voice) What is your occupation? Captain (grabs Jonah very angrily) And where were you the night of January 31st! Because my beard brush was stolen. And now I have to use fish bones!!! Mariner 2 (Throws a cup of water on the captain) Hey man. What happened to the good cop bad cop? Captain I am! You said bad cop bad cop right? Mariner 1 No! Good Cops! Bad Cop! You two are the good Captain Oh. Sorry boy. Let's try this again. Captain (good cop voice) And where do you come from? Mariner 1 (bad cop) What is your country? Captain (good cop) And of what people are you? Jonah I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. You see the Lord told me to go to Nineveh and tell the people (Pointing at the crowd.) that they are being evil against the Lord. I did not want to, so I ran from the presence of the Lord….. Tell as Calm down. ones!!! 7 Mariner 2 What is this that you have done! Fleeing from the presence of the Lord! Captain What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us? (The sea grows more and more tempestuous.) Jonah If you pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you. I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come on you. Song3 Throw H'm Over Captain (The music begins and the captain speaks.) Nonsense! Men, we can make it to dry land. Now row! (The men row hard to get back to dry land, but they can not. The sea grows more and more tempestuous against them.) Captain & Mariners: Jonah: Captain & Mariners: Jonah: Row, row, row, your boat Throw me overboard (3x echoing each other) Row, row, row, your boat Throw me overboard (3x at the same time) Wind 1 (The wind torments and teases the men as they row) Row Row Row your boat gently down…. (singing in a sarcastic teasing way)You can row as hard as you want but my God will have his way!!! Captain (The music is still playing) O, Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you. Captain & Mariners: Jonah: Throw em over board Throw me overboard 8 Captain & Mariners: Jonah: (3x echoing each other) Throw em overboard Throw me overboard (3x at the same time) (On the last note of the song they pick up Jonah and hurl him into the sea, and the sea ceases from its raging.) (Jonah sinks to the bottom of the sea. The wind Exits.) (The men fear the Lord exceedingly, and they offer a sacrifice to the Lord and make vows.) Captain Lord, I no longer look to dead fish to save me. Forgive my ugly heart for not seeing you as the great God you are. (Throws his fish in the sea) Mariner 1 You God, are great and mighty, nothing is greater than you. Only you can save me. I will not put my trust in men, or the Captain (looks at captain and sizes him up with his hands and acts like he might throw him over board) Nahh. I will put my trust in you. Mariner 2 Lord all these years I have looked to worthless treats to guide this ship. What a fool I have been. I will follow only your lead from now on. Song 4: "Day After Day" Ps. 54:6 & Ps. 61:8 Captain: Mariner1: Captain & Mariners: (Verse 1) With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you (oh, Lord) I will give thanks to your name, Oh Lord, for it is good. (chorus) So will I ever sing Praises to your name, As I perform my vows 9 Mariner2: Captain: Captain & Mariners: Day after day Create in me a clean heart oh God Renew a right spirit within me Cast me not away from your presence Take not your spirit from me (chorus) So will I ever sing Praises to your name, As I perform my vows Day after day (Song ends) Captain Tarshish Ho!! (They walk behind the boat and carry it off stage as if they are moving on to Tarshish; they chant hiho hiho it's off to Tarshish we go. After the men exit the stage the music for "Fish Dance" begins.) Song 5: Fish Dance (Ps. 69:34) (Sea creatures are dancing about the waves singing and worshiping God.) Lord Fish, a man named Jonah is in this sea. Swallow him up. Great Fish That boney guy over there Lord, with his head all wrapped in seaweed? Not much of a catch, he looks pretty well gone. I'd rather swallow a school of electric eels. But you said it Lord, so here I go. (Jonah is lifeless at the bottom of the sea and the Great fish swallows him up.) List of Characters for Scene 2 Jonah Chorus Lord Great Fish Scene 2 (Jonah is in the belly of the Big Fish sitting as the lights come up.) Jonah (He moans.) Mmmmoooaann. Day one in this belly and I think these digestive juices might burn my skin off. (Lights fade out for a moment then come back up on Jonah in the belly.) Jonah (He moans and groans.) Mmmooaan, groooaann. Day two in this belly. It is so dark and cold. 11 (Lights fade out for a moment then come back up on Jonah in the belly.) Jonah (He cries out.) Ahhhh, Day three in this belly, It hurts!!! (Lights fade out for a moment then come back up on Jonah in the belly.) Song 6 "Salvation" Jonah (As the music begins he starts to speak this prayer then he begins to sing the first verse.) I called out to you Lord, out of my distress, and you answered me; out of the belly of this fish, I cried, and you heard my voice. You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; but I will again look upon your holy temple.’ The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed on me forever; you brought up my life from the pit, Lord my God. When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who pay regard to vain idols loose their hope of steadfast love. But with the voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord! Jonah: (verse 1) I call to you I confess its true Your plan is perfect I'll remember you (verse 2) No matter where You are there Even deep beneath the sea You are here with me (chorus) Salvation, Salvation Belongs to our God (repeat) 12 He is good and He is faithful He is strong and He is able Salvation belongs to you (During the chorus of the song the Chorus of fish comes out and sings with Jonah. At this time the Fish Back drop is pulled up and the Big Dragon Fish dances on stage and covers Jonah.) Jonah & Chorus:(chorus) Salvation, Salvation Belongs to our God (repeat) He is good and He is faithful He is strong and He is able Salvation belongs to you (song ends) Lord Fish, It's time. (He kisses the dry land and speaks prideful) Thank you Lord! Finally, some dry and pleasant smelling land. Lord Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you. Jonah Yep. Yes sir. Yes sir. (He pulls himself up and tries to psyche himself up to go to Nineveh.) (He jumps around like a boxer or football player warming up.) and over rough, rocky, mountainous desert terrain… This isn't for Jonah, it's for God. Come on, he just saved you from a giant Fish. You can do this… it's just 500 miles over rough, rocky, mountainous desert to walk to Nineveh. I've certainly been hydrated enough. There are men and women playing dice in the streets, dancing, fighting, then gloating about how many people they conquered on the battle field the other day over drinks, stealing, and dabbling in sorcery. Up center stage is a platform with the king and some ladies fanning him and dancing for him as well as some sorcerers and advisors. Everyone is loud and chaotic. As each area of the street life in Nineveh is depicted through dialogue the other areas are still in motion, just silent so as to not upstage the dialogue.) (3 men are in the street playing dice. There are two ladies standing by watching.) Johnny I'm bettin four today gentlemen. Phil Oh, you are feelin lucky today Johnny? Johnny Luck ain't got nothin to do with it. Pure, skill is what I got. See that old man and old lady over there? Mona Sure do. 16 Luanne Let's go push em down and steal what they have and get some food. Mona Awh yea. Lets do it. (Mona and Luanne sneak up to old man and old woman and push them down. Then they start taking wallets, jewelry, shoes, etc from the old couple.) King Madam Sorcerer, What say you about today? Anything new and unusual? Madam Sorcerer: Lets see now King. (She puts both of her hands on her temples rubbing as if she is searching with her eyes closed.) I'm checking with the spirits from old years past. Hoummm…..auhbbbbyauhbby. Nope king, a fairly normal day, nothing new. King Ahh Good. Lady 1 Oh king, could I read your palm for you and tell you how great of a king you will be? King Why sure. Lady 2 Oh, me too King! King Oh why not, come tell me what the lines say. Lady 1 (taking one of the kings hands as if she is reading it.) Well, it says you are a great king, very powerful, and strong. Lady 2 (Holding the king’s other hand as if she is reading it.) There is no other king greater than you. Soon you will own everything as far as the eye can see. (They freeze as the next bit of dialogue out in the street happens.) (Nineveh is an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. Jonah begins to jog into the city, going a day's journey. As he jogs through the city, a crowd begins to gather and follow him. He is a foreigner who sticks out and his skin is completely 17 white.) Ninevite 1 Hey everybody, this weird guy is heading into town. Word is on the street that he looks pretty ugly. Ninevite 2 Come on guys, lets go see. I just love making fun of foreigners. (Some Ninevites are walking toward where Jonah is entering and some are still involved in their sinful activities. As they get closer to where Jonah is they start laughing at him.) Ninevite 1 You goon, you are all white. HaHaHaHa Ninevite 2 Ok Crazy, what happened to you?! This story ought to be really good! Ninevite 3 What? Cat got your tongue?. You too good to speak to us? Ninevite 4 The cats not gonna be the only one who has your tongue if you keep ignoring us like this. Ninevite 5 Yea! Let’s get em! Ninevite 6 Somebody let the crazies out of the nut house! HaHaHaHa (He finally stops, bends over and puts his hands on his knees to catch his breadth. Then he stands up.) Jonah In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown! And don't think for a second that the Lord does not mean something when he says it. I know first hand what can happen to a guy if you don't listen to the Lord. There is a big fish who can prove it. Just look at me, you don't get this kind of skin from hanging out on the beach for three days. I'm half digested. By the way, does anyone have any vitamin D? (A Ninevite is in the middle of grabbing another ready to pound him. They freeze in mid air one holding the other up. The one being held pulls some vitamins out of his pocket. At the same time all other Ninevites doing their evil acts freeze in mid air.) Ninevite Here you go. Looks like you really need some. 18 (There is a dramatic pause then the Ninevite drops the guy immediately. The other Ninevites doing their evil acts stop. They all put on sackcloth and sit in ashes. The people of Nineveh believed God.) Ninevite 3 We must fast in repentance for the wrongs we have done. Ninevite 4 From the greatest to the least of us, lets put on our sackcloth. (A messenger goes to the king and whispers in his ear. The King rises from his throne, removes his robe, covers himself with sackcloth, and sits in ashes.) King By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish. (As the King is giving his speech a Ninevite is sneaking up to the throne to steal some jewels from the King’s throne. Another Ninevite is down below the throne Worshiping an Idol. As soon as the King finishes his speech the Ninevite stealing his jewels puts them back immediately. The other Ninevite hits the Idol and throws it down and listens to the king. They both remove their robes, and cover themselves with sackcloth, and sit in ashes.) Reporter Voice over: Breaking news….God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. Ninevites Yay!!!! List of Characters for Scene 4 Jonah Sun 19 The Voice of God Plant Caterpillar Sunflower East Wind Scene 4: Outside the city of Nineveh Jonah (displeased and angry) Lord, didn't I say this would happen when I was in my country? That is why I ran to Tarshish; because I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. Now, Lord, please take my life from me, because it is better for me to die than to live. (Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city.) Sun (singing) I am the sun! Shining is so much fun. Come up in the East, and set in the West…Hello, pretty Jonah. Jonah Wooh! It's blazin hot today! Not a sign of shade anywhere. I might be here a long time waiting to see what will happen to Nineveh. God Little plant, grow up tall and give shade to my child Jonah. Plant (muffled) Sure thing Lord! (It makes a lot of grunting, squeezing, stretching, and pushing noises as it rises to the surface. It comes up frazzled and disoriented from struggling and rushing to grow to the surface.) Whew! I get a little dizzy when you speed up germination like that! Sure is bright out here. I've been dormant for so long, I forgot what the sun was like. But hot dog, that sure was fun! (It stretches over Jonah to shade him.) Jonah (Happy and pleased by the shade.) Ahh! What a relief. This feels amazing! I am so glad to be saved from the hot sun. (watches a little while.) Oh sure, you’ve stopped all your violent acts for now. You are fasting, and repenting now, but wait till tomorrow when you are back to your old ways. Ha! 20 (Jonah sits there through the night watching the city and sleeping till dawn the next day.) Sun (singing) I am the sun! Shining is so much fun. Come up in the East, and set in the West…Good-Bye, pretty Jonah. God Caterpillar, attack the plant that is shading Jonah. Caterpillar (chewing on another plant looking up with food hanging out of his mouth.) Sunflowers! Yumyumyumyum. (as it walks over to the sunflower it is discussing the fine taste of the leaves and stem of the sunflower versus the weed it had been currently chewing on. It is talking like a chef using words like pallet….) (as it arrives at the sunflower sniffing a leaf) Oh sunflower, standing so strong in the wind. The breeze brings a whiff of your tasty leaves. My taste buds are watering, I can resist no longer. (Sunflower notices the caterpillar.) Sunflower Oh no you don't you grub eating varmint. Go back to those weeds where you belong! The Lord told me to shade this man Jonah and that is just what I'm gonna do. Besides, I ain’t no dandelion! Now scat! Caterpillar Well, the Lord now wants me to attack and eat you up. You have lived a great life and served your purpose well. I must do what I am told. (It gets another great whiff) Oh sweet sunflower oil (It eats with joy and devours the sunflower) Sunflower (as it is being eaten it tries to fall graciously like a warrior.) Oh, Think I'm gonna faint. (It puts its hands around its neck like it is choking gasping for breath, then falls over.) Caterpillar Oh sooo good. Auwwhh, I am so tired, ready for a nap. (The caterpillar moves on to take a nap) (The sun rises, and God appoints the scorching east wind, and the sun beats down on the head of Jonah so that he is faint.) Sun I am the SUN!!! Fact! The temperature of my surface, the 21 photosphere, is about 10,000° Fahrenheit. The temperature at my core, or very middle of me, is about 27 million° Fahrenheit. I am 109 times wider than Earth, and I am 333,000 times heavier. I am the largest mass in our Solar System. Did you know that I am made out of 92% hydrogen, 7% helium and the rest is other low number gasses? In addition to heat and light, I also emit a low density stream of charged particles (mostly electrons and protons) known as the solar wind. Most of all, I was created by God, and I only do His will. God East Wind, blow scorching heat and dust to where Jonah is sitting. (The sound of Guitar chugging on the guitar.) East Wind Why yes Lord! (He travels quickly, dramatically, and stealthily across the stage to Jonah making his best moves to force the hottest air on Jonah.) East Wind I'm the Scorching east wind, I'm not ur friend I aint no gentle breeze, bring u to yo knees Chap ur hide, Sand blasted, sizzle till u bake, U got yo self into a pickle, ur gonna sizzle I won't feed you bread, I'm gonna burn yo head Mister ur gonna blister (Jonah is faint.) Jonah It is better for me to die than to live. God Do you do well to be angry for the plant? Jonah Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die. God You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle? 22 (Lights out. Show is over. As lights come up, cast and crew enter stage and lead the audience in worship through the chorus of "Salvation".) Salvation 23
