would not have to serve as president and vice
president together.
2. Why was the 12th Amendment
added to the Constitution in 1804?
• In 1804, the 12th Amendment was passed to
prevent ties between the candidates for
president and vice president. It stated that
the Electoral College must cast separate
ballots for president and vice president.
