Sanch Kahey Jug Maran Dhaye, Jhuthan Ko Aitbar. —Kabir Sahib Every thing in this world of Kal Niranjan is abnormal. There is nothing like justice and fair play here. Here the hypocrites are accorded warm welcome while the followers of truth are made to suffer. The people of the world believe in all that the hypocrites and unreal sages say but they do not care for what the Sants say. - SATGURU SHRI MADHU PARAMHANS SAHIB - 2 SAHIB BANDGI Amrit Vani (Nectarian Spiritual wisdom from Sant Matt) -Sant Satguru Madhu Paramhans Sahib Publicity Secretary - Ramratan, Jammu © SANT ASHRAM RANJRI (JAMMU )-2006 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED First Edition —MAY 2013 Copies ---- 5000 Website Address. www.sahib-bandhi.org E-Mail Address. *Santashram@ sahib-bandgi.org *SadGurusahib@ sahib-bandgi.org Published by Sahib Bandgi Sant Ashram Ranjri Post -Raya, Tehsil -Samba Distt. - Jammu Ph. This Mortal World Kabir Garav Na Keejiye, Ooncha Dekhi Avas. Kal Paroun Bhunyi Laitna, Ooper Jamsi Ghas. Sahibji cautions the worldly people not to boast of their big palaces. Eventually they will be laid to rest and dust and grass will appear on them. He also says that with the passage of time people will forget as to who is the person lying underneath. Kabira Yeh Sansar Hai, Jaisa Semal Phool. Din Dus Ke Vyavhar Mein, Jhute Rung Na Bhul. Har Jaley Lakri Jaley, Jaley Jlavan Har. Kautakhara Bhi Jaley, Kason Karun Pukar. Even the bones of a deceased person are burnt by the fire of the burnig pyre. But the wood used in burning these also gets burnt alongwith. Not only this, even the persons taking part in the entire process of bruning are burnt down when their life span ends. After some definite time the spectatrors witnessing this process are also burnt down. Thus, we see that the whole of the world is short lived. Here everyone is going to meet his death at the fixed hour. In such circumstances, whom can we pray to save us from the curel jaws of death? Mati Kahai Kumhar Se, Tu Keya Rounde Mohi. Ik Din Aisa Hoyega, Main Roundhugi Tohi. Lakri Kahai Luhar Se, Tu Mati Jarey Mohi. Ik Din Aisa Hoyega, Main Jaroungi Tohi. Ik Din Aisa Hoyega, Koye Kahu Ka Nahin. Ghar Ki Nari Kou Kahai, Tann Ki Nadi Jahin., At the time of death none will accompany us. What to talk of one’s own wife, even the nerves of body will give up our company. Chaley Gaye So Na Miley, Kisko Poochhun Baat. AMRIT VANI 5 Maat Pita Soot Bandhwa, Jhutha Sabb Sanghat. Jago Logo Matt Suvo, Na Karu Neend Se Pyar. Jaisa Sapna Rain Ka, Aisa Yeh Sansar. Jhuthey Sukh Ko Sukh Kahai, Manat Hai Munn Moad. Jagat Chavena Kal Ka, Kachhu Moothi Kachhu Goad. Sahibji says to the persons, who take the unreal pleasures of this world as real ones and remain lost in the sweet world of dreams, that this world is the chewing and devouring place of Kal Niranjan. Often we take the crisp gram in an envelop; take some grains in hand and put some in mouth. Those in mouth are gone and now it is the turn of those in hand. After this, there will be the turn of those in the envelop, thus whole of the world has become a sort of chewing and devouring place of Kal Niranjan where everyone has to meet his death at the fixed hour. Dharti Karte Ek Pug, Samunder Karte Phal. Hathoun Parbat Toulte, To Bhi Khaye Ka. Chet Sawerey Babre, Phir Pachhe Pachhitaye. To Ko Jana Door Hai, Kahai Kabir Bujhaye. Kal Karey So Aaj Ker, Aaj Karey So Abb. Pal Mein Parlai Hoyegi, Bahuri Karega Kabb. Pani Kera Budbuda, Us Manush Ki Jaat. Dekhat Hi Chhip Jayenge, Jyun Tara Parbhat. The life of man is like a bubble of water that vanishes even by a gentle blow of breeze in a manner the stars in the sky vanish with the dawn of day. Aaj Kal Ke Beech Mein, Jungle Hoga Bas. Ooper Ooper Hal Phirai, Dor Charenge Ghas. Kabir Yantar Na Bajeyi, Toot Gaye Sabb Tar. Yantar Bichara Keya Karai, Chala Bajavanhar. When the strings of this bodily instrument break, it stops functioning. When the soul responsible for the 6 SAHIB BANDGI normal functioning of this bodily instrument leaves the body, the instrument becomes useless. Saton Shabad Ju Bajte, Ghari Ghari Hotey Rag. Te Mandir Khali Parey, Baithen Lagey Kag. Chatti Chakki Dekhi Kari, Diya Kabira Roye. Dui Patan Ke Beech Mein, Sabat Bacha Na Koye. Kal Chakkar Chakki Chalai, Bahut Divas Aur Raat. Sagun Agun Doye Patla, Ta Mai Jeev Pisat. The grinding mill of Kal has been working since ages. The Jiva is being pressed within its two parts (Sagun and Nirgun). Some are busy in performing Sagun (with form) worship while others are busy in performing Nirgun (without form) worship. These two modes of worship have been prevalent in the world since long. Nevertheless, in both of these it is the Kal Purush that is worshipped as God. All the great Rishis and Munies who appeared before Kabirji remained confined to one or the other of these two modes of worship. None could understand the real mode of worship. At the very out set Sahibji unfolded before the worldly people the secret of real worship of Param Purush that was uneque and totally different from these two kinds of worships. In this mode of real worship, the Satguru has been accorded a very high status. This is the only mode of worship that can help man cross the ocean of births and deahts and reach his original abode— Amarlok. Mali Avat Dekhi Ke, Kaliyan Karein Pukar. Phooli Phooli Chuni Leyi, Kalh Hamari Bar. Hum Jaye To Bhi Muva, Hum Bhi Chalan Har. Hamrey Pichhey Poongra, Tin Bhi Bandha Bhar. Those who gave birth to us have left the world and our body too is going to meet the same fate. Moreover, AMRIT VANI 7 our family members alongwith their bundle of deeds (karmas) will be waiting for their turn to do so. Kabir Garab Na Kijiye, Cham Lapeti Harh. Ik Din Tera Chhatter Sir, De Ga Kal Ukhar. Do not be proud of this body with a covering of flesh over bones. One day Kal will crush your body related ego. Kabir Garab Na Kijiye, Dehi Dekhi Surang. Bichhure Pra Mela Nahi, Jyun Kenchuli Bhujang. Sahibji says that we should not feel proud of our beautiful physical appearance. This body is like the outer skin of the serpent that cannot be found again after being thrown away. Kabir Sapne Rain Ke, Ughri Aye Nain. Jeev Pra Bahu Loot Mein, Jagun Lain Na Dain. All that we see in the dream appears useless and unreal when we open our eyes in the morning. Likewise, all of us are being cheated in this unreal world of dreams. Infact, the jiva has nothing to do in this world of Kal Nirajan. Kabir Yeh Tun Jaat Hai, Sakai To Thor Lagav. Kai Sewa Karu Sadhu Ki, Kai Guru Ke Gun Gaav. Sahibji is trying to caution us that this body is slowly and steadily moving towards its death. We should try to find out the way to achieve salvation. For this we shall have to either serve the holy sages or shall have to recite the virtues of Satguru. Marein Ge Mari Jayen Ge, Koyi Na Lega Naam. Ujar Jaye Basayen Ge, Chhori Basanta Gam. All will die. They will have to die and then none will remember them even. They will have to leave the villages and move to the forests. That is to say they will have to take rebirth in the Yuni (living form) of some bird, insect and the like. 8 SAHIB BANDGI Yeh Tann Kancha Kumbh Hai, Liya Phirai They Sath. Tapka Laga Phuti Geya, Kachhu Na Aya Hath. O Man! This body is like a raw pitcher that we have been carrying along with us. It will break with a single stroke of death and we shall be left with nothing at all. Aye Hain So Jayen Ge, Raja Runk Faqir. Ek Sinhasan Chari Chaley, Ek Bandhey Janjir. Whoever has come to this mortal world will have to leave it one day or the other, no matter whether he is a king, a poor fellow or a faqir. The only distinction to be seen will be that a person with assets of noble deeds will go seated on a high throne while the one with assets of evil deeds will go tied in big chains of the lord of death. Bari Bari Aapne, Chaley Piyare Meet. Teri Bari Jiyra, Niyre Avai Neet. O Man! All your friends have left the world one by one and it is now your tun to do so. Aachhe Din Pachhe Gaye, Guru Soun Kiya Na Hait. Abb Pachhitave Keya Karai, Chariya Chug Geyi Khet. Good days have passed but you haven’t so far sought the shelter of real Satguru. It is no use crying over spilt milk now. Ya Duniya Do Roz Ki, Mat Ker Yaso Hait. Guru Charnan Chit Layiye, Jo Puran Sukh Hait. The worldy joys are short lived. There fore one should not indulge too much in material pursuits. Keep your concenrtation at the holy feet of your Satguru if you want to realise God and attain permanent bliss. AMRIT VANI 9 2. Maya (Illusion, Material World) Maya Munn Ki Mohini, Sur Nar Rahay Lubhaye. In Maya Sabb Khayiya, Maya Koyi Na Khaye. Maya is the charming power of mind that is charming all—be they, men, Munies, gods and the like. It has devoured everyone in the three lokas, but none has been able to devour it. Munn Se Maya Upjai, Maya Tirgun Roop. Panch Tattav Ke Mail Mein, Bandhey Sakal Sarup. Maya has been born out of mind. It has three forms—Satgun, Rajgun and Tamgun. Satgun is associated with Vishno, Rajgun with Brahma and Tamgun with Shiva. All these three are born out of Maya. Infact, the five elements themselves are Maya out of which all the bodies have been formed. That is to say the bodies have been created to tie the Atmas. Maya To Thagni Bhayi, Thagat Phirai Sabb Desh. Ja Thug Ne Thagni Thagi, Ta Thug Se Adesh. Maya in the guise of lord has been cheating the whole of the world. However, he who doesn’t fall in its trap and instead, cheats the maya itself deserves salutations. Munn Maya To Ek Hai, Maya Munnhin Smaye. Teen Lok Sans Pari, Kahai Kahun Samujhaye. In fact, Munn and Maya are one and the same thing. Maya resides in Munn itself and this has created doubts in all the three lokas. None has been able to understand this mystery. Mind is Brahmand (3 lokas) and the five elements themselves are Maya. As the nature is made up of five elements, it is also Maya. In this way Mind and Maya have become one. And the body is also Maya as it is also made of five elements. As the mind also alongwith soul resides in this body, the Munn and Maya 10 SAHIB BANDGI are completely inseparable. Both of them have conspired to cheat and looting the entire world and all are dancing to their tune. Kabir Maya Papini, Harison Karai Haram. Mukh Kariwali Kumti Ki, Kahan Na Deyi Naam. Kabir Maya Papini, Phand Lai Baithi Hati. Sabb Jug To Phandai Pra, Gaya Kabira Kati. Shankerhoo Tein Sabal Hai, Maya Ya Sansar. Apne Bal Chhutai Nahin, Chhuravai Sirjan Har. Maya Deepak Nar Patang, Bhrami Bhrami Mahin Parant. Koyi Ek Guru Geyan Te, Ubrai Sadhu Sant. Maya is like a burning lamp into which flying insects like human beings fall again and again due to minunderstanding. Just as a flying insect goes again and again to the lamp inspite of receiving burns every time, the worldly persons again and again get entangled in the worldly Maya inspite of receiving sufferings and sorrows at its hands. In the end they lose their life in the lap of Maya. Only some rare sages succeed in freeing themselves from the grip of Maya. Maya Seti Mati Milo, Jo Sovriya Dehi. Narad Se Munivar Galey, Keya Bharosa Tohi. Maya Muyi Na Munn Muva, Mari Mari Gaya Sharir. Asha Trishna Na Muyi, yun Kathi Kahein Kabir. Neither the Maya nor Munn gets destroyed. Also, the desires of Munn never get destroyed. It is only the body that suffers death repeatedly. Moti Maya Sabb Tajain, Jheeni Taji Na Jaye. Peer Paigamber Ouliya, Jheeni Sabb Ko Khaye. All can leave the physically visible Maya in the form of wealth, wife, son, house etc. but none is able to free himself from the invisible and ethereal (subtle) Maya AMRIT VANI 11 in the form of ego. Sahibji says that it is this ethereal Maya that devours even the great peers and faquirs. Maya Ka Sukh Char Din, Kahan Tu Gahey Ganwar. Sapnon Payo Raj Dhan, Jat Na Lagai Bar. The pleasures of Maya are short lived. Then what for is man trying to run after them. These pleasures will disappear like the wealth one receives in one’s dreams. Maya Dasi Sant Ki, Sakat Ki Sartaj. Sakat Ki Sir Bhanini, Santon Saheli Laj. Maya lives as a maid with the Sants and as a crown on the head of Sakats (who have not sought the shelter of any Satguru). It expects fame from the Sakats while it feels shy before the Sants. Maya Maya Sabb Kahai, Maya Lakhai Na Koye. Jo Munn Se Na Outre, Maya Kahiye Soye. Everyone is talking about Maya but none has been able to understand its true nature. All the places visited by this mind are nothing but Maya. Guru Ko Chela Beesh De, Jo Ganthi Hoye Daam. Poot Pita Ko Marsi, Ye Maya Ke Kam. If the Guru has the maya of wealth, the disciple poisons the Guru in order to kill him. Again, it is due to Maya alone that a son kills his father. All these are the plays of Maya. Maya Chhoran Sabb Kahai, Maya Chhori Na Jaye. Chhoran Ki Jo Baat Karu, Bahut Tamacha Khaye. Everyone talks of severing one’s ties with Maya but none succeeds in doing so. One the other hand, it is the maya that slaps all and makes them fall down. Chharai Bin Chhutai Nahin, Chhoran Hara Naam. Jeev Jatan Bahutari Karai, Sarey Na Aiko Kam. None can cross the ocean of births and deaths without severing relations with Maya. However, it is not within the power of jiva to do so on its own. It is 12 SAHIB BANDGI the power of Naam alone that can help jiva (Individual) sever its relations with maya. III 3. Munn (Mind) Munn itself is Kal Purush. It is the king of the three lokas. Munn Hi Sarupi Dev Niranjan, Tohi Raha Bharmai. He Hansa Tu Amarlok Ka, Para Kal Bus Ayi. O Jeevatma! This Mind itself is Niranjan who has been misleading you since ages together. You are the Jiva of Amarlok but you have fallen in the grip of Kal. Munn Hi Sarupi Dev Niranjan, Tohi Raha Bharmai. Panch Pachis Teen Ka Pinjra, Ja Mein Tohi Rakha Bharmayi. He clearly says that Mind that is often called as Niranjan or Nirakar himself, has been misleading you since ages together. This body is the cage of 5 elements, 25 different natures (habits) and three features into which the soul has been imprisoned. Alakh Niranjan Lakhe Na Koyi, Jihi Bandhey Bandha Sabb Leyi. Jehi Jhuthe Sabb Bandhu Ayana, Jhuthi Baat Sanch Kai Mana. Sahibji says that Alakh Niranjan who remains invisible, has been holding all the living beings in his grip. The ignorant persons taking his unreal Maya as true and real one, have of their own accord got entangled in it. In this way the whole of the world has been misled. The people are churning water instead of curd. The chakor takes the cinder as moon and puts it into its mouth but it throws it away as soon as its beak and tongue begin to burn. It repeats this activity again and AMRIT VANI 13 again and ultimately suffers much harm. Likewise, the worldly people out of ignorance take Niranjan as the ultimate reality and worship him. In the end they attain nothing but sorrows and sufferings. Unable to achieve salvation, they continue to remain entangled in the ocean of births and deaths. Munn Ke Matey Na Chaliye, Munn Ke Matey Anek. Jo Munn Per Aswar Hai, So Sadhu Koyi Ek. Don’t obey the dictates of mind as its nature changes every moment. At one moment it makes a desire for some particular thing but soon after it makes some other desire. Its desires are always related to the material things of the world. It never turns our attention to the liberation of soul. There is some rare hermit who doesn’t pay any heed to the dictates of Munn and instead forces it to behave like a subordinate. Kabir Munn To Ek Hai, Bhavai Tahan Lagaye. Bhavai Guru Ki Bhakti Ker, Bhavai Vishya Kmaye. Munn Ke Harey Har Hai, Munn Ke Jeete Jeet. Kahey Kabir Guru Payiye, Munn Hi Ke Parteet. Munn Ke Bahutak Rung Hain, Chhin Chhin Badley Soye. Ek Rung Mein Jo Rahai, Aisa Birla Koye. Munn Panchon Ke Vash Para, Munn Ke Vash Nahin Panch. Jit Dekhun Tit Doun Lagi, Jit Bhagun Tit Anch. It is the lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego that collectively form the body of mind, but still these are not under the control of mind. Instead, it is the mind that is under the control of these. It is the mind that falls under the sway of lust, anger and ego and acts accordingly. Sahibji says that the mind wants to run away in all direction it finds but fails to escape from the burning fire of these five ghosts. Mana Manorath Chhdi De, Tera Kiya Na Hoye. 14 SAHIB BANDGI Pani Mein Ghee Niksai, Rukha Khaye Na Koye. Mind never feels satisfaction of its desires. It wants to fly into the sky without wings. Therefore, we should do away with our desires. Infact, mind has an unending chain of its desires which can in no way be fulfilled. Had it been possible to produce Ghee by the churning of water, none would have liked to eat the loafs of bread without it. Moreover, none would suffer from sorrows and sufferings if it were possible to satisfy all the desires of mind. Yeh Munn Neecha Mool Hai, Neecha Karam Suhaye. Amrit Pan Chhari Kari, Vishhi Preeti Kari Khaye. This mind has a very mean and is impure. It derives pleasure from evil acts. Out of ego, it discards such noble acts related to the spiritual enlightenment that can reward it with sweet fruit like nectar and instead, loves to do such wrong acts that can give it nothing but bitter tasting poisonous fruit. Mahmanta Munn Mari Le, Ghat Hi Mahin Gher. Jabbhi Chalai Peeth Des, Ankus Dai Dai Phair. Gherao the mind in your interior and make it silent. Recite the holy Naam and set it right as and when it makes some unholy desire or tries to run to some wrong place. Sur Nar Muni Sabb Ko Thagai, Munnhin Liya Autar. Jo Koyi Yate Bachai, Teen Lok Se Neyar. This mind has cheated every one, be it man, Muni, god, yogi or the like. It is the mind that has incarnated at various periods of time and has appeared as a saviour. He who understands the deceitful nature of mind, escapes from it and seeks the shelter of real Satguru, is the rare and lucky person indeed. Such a person frees himself from the 3 lokas of Kal Niranjan and reaches the fourth loka that is called as Amarlok (The eternal world that can never be destroyed). Baat Banayi Jagg Thagyo, Munn Parmodha Nahin. AMRIT VANI 15 Kahain Kabir Munn Lai Geya, Lakh Chourasi Mahin. The Mind has kept all the jivas entangled in the thoughts of evil and noble deeds. None has been able to understand its true nature. Sahibji says that the mind has kept all the jivas entangled in the cycle of births and deahts. This can not be the act of Param Purush (Sahib) who is the real well wisher of all the living beings. Bajigar Ka Bandra, Aisa Jeev Munn Sath. Nana Nach Dikhaye Ker, Rakhe Apne Sath. Kal Jeev Ko Grasyi, Bahut Kahvo Samujhaye. Kahain Kabir Main Keya Karun, Koyi Nahin Patiyaye. Kabir Yeh Munn Lalchi, Samjai Nahin Ganwar. Bhajan Karan Ko Alsi, Khaney Ko Taiyar. This mind is very greedy. It doesn’t pay heed to any piece of good advice. It shows laziness in reciting the holy Naam but remains ever ready to satisfy its hunger. Munn Murid Sansar Hai, Guru Murid Koyi Sadh. Jo Maney Guru Vachan Ko, Ta Ka Mata Agadh. The whole of the world is slave to the mind. The living beings act as per the dictates of mind. But it is some rare hermit who is slave to a Satguru. He who acts as per the dictates of his Satguru is a man of intellect and superior thinking. Munn Data Munn Lalchi, Munn Raja Munn Runk. Jo Yeh Munn Guru Soun Milai, To Guru Milai Nisunk. Sometimes the mind turns into a noble donor while at other times it turns greedy. Sometimes it becomes broad minded as a king while at other times it becomes a miser. If this mind turns towards the Satguru, the realisation of Atma becomes a certainty. Manuva To Panchhi Bhaya, Uri Ke Chala Akas. 16 SAHIB BANDGI Ooper Hi Te Gir Parha, Phiri Maya Ke Pas. This mind is like a bird that sometimes behaves as a noble being and soars high in the sky but in the next moment it falls down and becomes dirty after mixing up with Maya (illusion). Jetee Lahar Samudar Ki, Te Ti Munn Ki Dour. Sahjey Hira Neepjai, Jo Munn Avai Thor. There are as many desires in mind as there are waves on the ocean. It is very clever and naughty. If it becomes desirefree and calm, the attainment of diamond in the form of spiritual knowledge becomes an easy task. Pahile Yeh Munn Kag Tha, Karta Jeevan Ghat. Abb To Munn Hansa Bhaya, Moti Chuni Chuni Khat. Before seeking the shelter of a Satguru and getting blessed with the holy Naam, this mind was like a crow and indulged in killing other animals. Now it has turned into a Hansa and eats the pearls of knowledge. Bina Sees Ka Mirag Hai, Chahun Dishi Charne Jaye. Bandhi Lagao Guru Geyan Soun, Rakho Tattav Smaye. This mind is like a headless animal that feeds on the grass of evils and vices. Tie it with a rope of spiritual knowldge of Satguru and keep it absorbed in reciting the holy Naam. Dharti Phatai Megh Milai, Kapra Phatai Dour. Tann Phatai Ko Aushdhi, Munn Phatai Nahin Thor. If the earth develops a crack, the water fills it up; if the cloth gets torn, the thread can be used to sew it; if the body develops some scratches or cuts, the medicines can be used to set it right, but if the mind develops cracks, there is no way out to set it right. Kabir Munn Markat Bhaya, Kahun Na Nek Thahraye. Satya Naam Bhadhe Bina, Jit Bhave Tit Jaye. AMRIT VANI 17 Sahibji says that this Munn jumps about like a monkey. It never behaves like a decent and nice fellow. Without the real Naam it will go where it likes. Kal Khara Sir Oopre, Tain Jag Birane Meet. Ja Ka Ghar Hai Gail Mein, So Kus Sovey, Nishichant. III 4. About Lust, Anger, Greed, Attachment and Ego Only for one month a year, a dog gets lost in the satisfaction of its sexual desires. For the rest of the months it doesn’t show any interests for it. However, a person filled with lust behaves like a dog during whole of the year including all the six seasons. Those who remain engrossed in the satisfaction of sexual desires, take birth repeatedly through the same process. None has been able to free himself from these desires. Sahibji says that he who escapes from these desiers deserves to be called as the true devotee. Sahibi says that—a person lost in sexual desires and the one who is short tempered can attain salvation, but a greedy person can never hope to do so. A greedy person hoards money and thus collects lakhs of rupees. Nevertheless, at the time of his death he fails to take even a single penny with him. At that time he has to part even with with the clothes he is wearing. Water can never stay on a higher land. It can stay on a lower land only. Therefore, a person who bows, can fully quench his thirst whereas one who stands strainght has to return without quenching his thirst. Likewise, a person who goes to the enlightened souls like an ordinary and simple fellow returns after attaining a lot while on egotist has to return empty handed. 18 SAHIB BANDGI If Misri (purified sugar) gets scattered in sand, an elephant can’t eat it whereas an ant can easily do so. Likewise, only a person who is ego free can realise Sahibji The Godly element is ethereal in nature. An egotist can’t attain it. Sahibji says, “O Jiva! Shun your doubts and making yourself small, drink the milk in the form of holy Naam. Free yourself of your ego and seek the shelter of some Satguru. This is the only possible way to achieve salvation. The Guru of a lustful person is a lustful wife. This is because his attention is at all times towards her. Likewise, wealth is the Guru of a greedy person. Sahibji says that his own Guru is a rare Sant and that ‘Naam’ itself is the Guru of Sants who remains absorbed in it. There can be no ‘Naam’ where there is lust and lust alone. Where there is ‘Naam’ there can be no place for lust there. Sahibji says that it is just the case of darkness and Sun that can’t co exist. The holy Naam is like the sun wehreas lust is the symbol of darkness. A lustful man never takes nectar as a good thing. He remains all the times absorbed in his lustful thoughts. All the attempts to show him the right path prove useless. The flying insect is attracted towards the beautiful looking golden yellow light of the burning lamp and finally loses its life there. Likewise, a lustful man during the peak of his filthy thoughts forgets even the pains and sorrows that he has to reap soon after. The excess of lustful thoughts makes one lose all sense of shame and good sense. This lust has tortured and troubled all including human beings, sages and the like. Our Holy Scriptures bear witness to the fact that this lust has made even the great sages, who worshipped AMRIT VANI 19 hard for years together to realise God, dance to its tune. It has held even the gods in its firm grip. Even Inder, the king of the gods had approached Ahalya, the wife of sage Gautam under the impulse of lust. The fire of anger is burning inside all. The whole of the world seems to be burning because of it. Sahibji says that we should seek the shelter of the holy sages if we want to escape from it. This world is like a castle of wood with fire burning all around. Those who stay here get burnt down while the sages who stay away from it and remain absorbed in worship secceed in attaining salvation III 5. Meeting With Sadhus Kabir Darshan Sadhu Ka, Barey Bhag Darshaye. Jo Hovey Sooli Saza, Kantey Hi Tari Jaye. Kabir Darshan Sadhu Ke, Karat Na Keejai Kani. Jyun Uddam Se Lakshmi, Aalas Munn Se Hani. Kabir Soyi Din Bhala, Ja Din Sadhu Milaye. Unk Bharey Bhari Bhetiye, Pap Sharira Jaye. Kabir Darshan Sadhu Ke, Khali Hath Na Jaye. Yahi Seekh Budh Leejiye, Kahain Kabir Bujhaye. Khali Sadhu Na Vida Karun, Sun Leejai Sabb Koye. Kahein Kabir Kachu Bhaint Dharu, Jo Tere Ghar Hoe. Sadhu Darash Ko Jayiye, Jeta Dhariye Panye. Pug Pug Pai Asmedh Jug, Kahain Kabir Sumujhaye. It is not a simple thing to have the holy Darshan of a sadhu. Each forward step brings us the fruit equivalent to that which we can reap by the performance of Ashavmedh yajya. 20 SAHIB BANDGI Kabir Sangat Sadhu Ki, Kabhi Na Nishfal Hoye. Loha Pars Paras Te, So Bhi Kanchan Hoye. A piece of iron truns into gold on coming in contact with paras (a stone). In the same manner the company of a sadhu never goes unrewarded. One is able to achieve some or other benefit. Avat Sadhu Na Harkhiya, Jaat Na Diya Roye. Kahain Kabir Va Dass Ki, Mukti Kahan Se Hoye. How can the devotees who don’t feel pleasure on the arrival of a Sadhu and also don’t feel sad on his departure, hope to achieve salvation. III 6. The Teachings Of The Holy Sants Denhar Kou Aur Hai, Deta Hai Din Rain. Log Bhram Humper Karein, Ta Te Neecha Nain. —Rahim ji Rahimji says that it is God who is the bestower of all things and He continues to do so. That is to say every thing in this world belongs to God. But the people are under the wrong impression that it is he (Rahim ji) who does so. That is why my eyes have bowed out of a sense of shame. The donor is one only while others become medium. Munn Hin Soon Mal Oopjai, Munn Hi Soon Mal Dhoyi. Seek Chalai Gur Sadh Ki, Tou Toon Nirmal Hoyi. —Dadu Deyal ji It is the mind from where the waste products of all kinds of vices are produced and these waste products can be removed with the help of this mind alone. Dadu Dayal AMRIT VANI 21 ji says that if we put our mind on the path shown by the holy Sants, it will definitely become purified. Paltoo Oonchi Jati Ka, Mati Koyi Karey Ahankar. Sahib Ke Durbar Mein, Kewal Bhakti Pyar. —Palto Sahibji Donon Rahiman Ek Se, Jo Lau Bolat Nahin. Jan Parat Hain Kag Pik, Ritu Basant Ke Mahin. —Rahim ji Inspite of having the same colour, it is not possible to distinguish between the two unless they speak something. However, in the spring season this distinction becomes clear when the cu-ckoo charms the hearts of all with its sweet tongue and the crow with its ugly tune of caw-caw displeases the hearts of all. Likewise, the distinction between the noble and evil souls becomes clear at the appropriate time. Sahjo Bhaj Hari Naam Koon, Tajo Jagat Soon Neh. Apna To Koyi Hai Nahin, Apni Sagi Na Deh. —Sahjo Bayi ji Nanak Aiko Sumriye, Jal Thal Raha Smaye. Dooja Kahey Sumriye, Janme Aru Mar Jaye. —Nanak Devji Jo Vishya Santan Taji, Moor Tahi Laptaye. Jyun Nar Darat Vaman Ker, Swan Swad Soun Khaye. —Rahimji The foolish and the ignorant continue to indulge in the lustful life, while the Sants leave it off. Just see! a dog licks even the dirty waste products vomitted out by man. What sort of a feeling can take birth in the mind of man on seeing this act of dog. Certainly, man will take such a dog as a very dirty and foolish living being. Likewise, the Sants who themselves have left off lustful life take those indulged in such a life as foolish and ignorant fellows. 22 SAHIB BANDGI Kahu Rahim Kaise Nibhe, Bair Kair Ko Sung. Ve Dolat Rus Aapne, Unke Phatan Ang. —Rahimji Two fellows with different nature can never pull on together. How can a Berry plant and a banana plant pull on together if we sow them to near each other. The berry with its thick and harsh body will tear off the tender leaves of a banana plant. Likewise, a noble and a wicked fellow can never pull on together. Toote Sajjan Manayiye, Jau Toote Sau Bar. Rahiman Phiri Phiri Pohiye, Toote Muktahar. We should try to reconcile with the loved ones even if they get annoyed hundreds of times. If a necklace of pearls breaks, one should collect the pearls and again form the necklace. The loved ones are also like pearls and they shouldn’t be treated lightly. Kahu Se Nahin Rakhiye, Kahu Vidhi Ki Chah. Param Santoshi Hoojiye, Rahiye Beparvah. —Charan Dassji Charan Dassji says that we shouldn’t depend on others for any kind of help. We can remain care free if we are content with our lot. Palto Gunha Kiye Se, Bhajan Mahin Bhang Hoye. Hari Ko Dass Kahaye Ke, Gunha Karai Na Koye. —Palto Sahibji Munh Meetho Bhitar Kapat, Tahan Na Mero Bas. Kahu Se Dil Na Milai, Paltoo Phirai Udas. —Palto Sahibji Paltoo Dassji says that wrong acts lead to breach in recitation of holy Naam. And he who is a real devotee of Sahib, can’t do any wrong act. He furthur says that Sahib doesn’t reside in a person who has a sweet tonge but is a cheat at heart. AMRIT VANI 23 Paltoo feels sad because he hasn’t met anyone with a clean and pure heart. Naam Jari Panch Shahar Mein, Deoun Ukti Bataye. Paras Ram Sach Pach Rahey, Karam Rog Mit Jaye. —Paras Ramji In order to seek permanent liberation from the disease of Karmas (deeds) Paras Ramji says that we should put the medicine of ‘Naam’ into the body made out of 5 material elements. This is the only way to free ourselves from the disease of our deeds. Dadu Peed Na Upji, Na Hum Kari Pukar. Tatein Sahib Na Milai, Dadu Biti Bar. —Dadu Dayalji Jyun Supna Dekhna, Jug Rachna Tim Jan. Is Mein Kachhu Sancho Nahin, Nanak Sanchi Maan. —Nanak Devji Supnein Sub Kuchh Dekhiye, Jagai Tau Kuchh Nahin. Aisa Yahu Sansar Hai, Samjhi Dekhi Munn Mahin. —Dadu Deyalji Dadu Marg Kathin Hai, Jeevan Chaley Na Koyi. Soyi Chali Hai Bapura, Je Jeevat Mirtak Hoyi. —Dadu Deyalji It is the state of meditation. Before entering into the world of Sahib one has to die while living. Through meditation the devotees move out of this body and enter into the spiritual world of Lord and thus die while living. Kam Krodh Ko Mari Kai, Marai Neend Ahar. Paltoo Aise Dass Ko, Bhram Karai Sansar. —Paltoo Sahibji Paltoo Sahib says that the world begins to doubt a devotee who brings his lust, anger, sleep and hunger under control. Sahjo Jeevan Sabb Sagey, Muye Nikat Nahin Jayen. 24 SAHIB BANDGI Rovain Swarth Aapne, Supne Dekh Drayen. —Sahjo Bayi ji All the worldly relations are unreal and are based on selfish motives. These people keep their association till the life time of a person and none accompanies at the time of death. People don’t want even to go near the deceased person. Moreover, if someone weeps over the death of a deceased person, he does so only in his own interest. The people of the world weep on remembring the comforts received from the deceased person that won’t be available to them now. Moreover, if per chance the deceased person appears in dreams as well, the people feel afraid taking him as a ghost. Baidh Dhanantar Mari Gya, Paltoo Amar Na Koye. Sur Nar Muni Jogi Jati, Sabai Kal Bus Hoye. —Paltoo Sahibji Who can be immortal when even Dhanvantri, the physician who gave life to many a diseased persons could not survive. Paltoo Sahib says that man, Yogi, Sanyasi and the like, are all in the grip of Kal Purush (death) and none of them is immortal. Mala Japun Na Ker Japun, Jihva Japo Na Naam. Sumiran Mera Hari Karai, Main Paya Vishram. —Malook Dassji Daya Dharam Hirdai Basai, Bolai Amrit Bain. Teyi Ounche Janiye, Jinke Neeche Nain. —Malook Dassji Malookji says that a real devotee whose soul has got merged with that of God need not recite the holy Naam. He becomes care free and it is Sahib who has to take care of him. He also says that a devotee who is kind hearted humble and ego free is great in the real sense. Antar Dav Lagi Rahai, Dhuan Na Pragtai Soye. Kai Jiye Aapan Janhin, Kai Jihi Biti Hoyi. AMRIT VANI 25 —Rahimji Rahimji says that people fail to understand the pain in some else’s mind. Only he who himself has suffered from such a pain can realise the magnitude of this pain. Only the devotee who himself has suffered from the pangs of separation from Sahib can understand what it means to other devotees. Kaj Parai Kachhu Aru Hai, Kaj Sarai Kachhu Aur. Rahiman Bhanvri Ke Bhaye, Nadi Siravat Mour. The world is selfish. When people have to satisfy their own interests, they cultivate friendship and good relations. But once the purpose is served, they behave like strangers. Just see how people throw away some decorative items like the crown used by them at the time of marriages etc. into the river when these become useless. This world also behaves in the same manner. All the selfish people here behave in a lovable manner as long as their self interest is not served. After their interests is served they don’t show their faces again. Bhesh Faqiri Je Karai, Munn Nahin Aavai Hath. Dil Faqiri Jo Rahai, Sahib Tinke Sath. —Malook Dassji Those who look sage like in their dress only fail to keep the mind under control. While those who are sage at heart and have left off all sorts of attachments, feel the presence of Sahibji with them at all the times. Sunder Dehi Payi Kai, Matt Koyi Karai Guman. Kal Dareha Khaye Ga, Keya Buda Keya Javan. —Malook Dassji Sumiran Aisa Keejiye, Dooja Lakhai Na Koye. Aunth Na Pharkat Dekhiye, Prem Rakhiye Goye. —Malook Dassji Malook Dassji says that a devotee should recite the holy Naam in a manner that no other fellow comes to 26 SAHIB BANDGI know of it. Keep your love for Sahib hidden in a manner that none can notice even the movement of your lips. Kaise Nibhai Nibal Jan, Kari Sablan Soun Gair. Rahiman Basi Sagar Vishai, Karat Magar Soun Bair. —Rahimji Just as we can’t dare to have enmity with a crocodile if we want to live in water, we can’t dare to ignore the brave persons in actual life as they can be of use to us at one or the other time. If the weak take the brave persons as strangers, they would find it somewhat difficult to live in a comfortable manner. Mangat Ghate Rahim Padd, Kitau Karau Badi Kam. Teen Pug Basudha Karo, Tou Bavnai Naam. —Rahimji A beggar lowers his position inspite of the great works he does. Just see! how Vishnoji had to reduce his body to 52 fingers simply to beg three feet of land from the king Bali. Even inspite of his greatness, Lord Vishno came to be known as Bavan due to his act of begging. Likewise, every beggar lowers his Name, fame and status. Kunbhe Bandha Jalu Rahai, Jal Binu Kumb Na Hoyi. Gean Ka Bandha Manu Rahai, Guru Bin Geyan Na Hoyi. —Nanak Devji A pitcher helps to stop the flow of water but there can be no pitcher without water (to make a pitcher one needs water). Likewise, mind can be controlled through knowledge but there can be no knowledge without a Guru. Jal Ki Bhiti Bhavan Ka Thamba, Rakat Boond Ka Gara. Harh Mans Nadi Ko Pinjru, Pakshi Fansa Vichara. —Ravi Dassji The bird in the guise of soul has been imprisoned in the bodily cage. AMRIT VANI 27 Tulsi Jug Mein Do Badey, Ek Naam Ek Daam. Naam Milavey Peev Se, Daam Karey Sabb Kam. —Tulsi Dassji Tulsi Dassji says that two things in this world are considered as great—one is the holy ‘Naam’ and the other is wealth. Through Naam. One can realise lord while with wealth one can get all the works done. Dariya Bhavjal Agam Hain, Satguru Karhun Jahaj. Tahi Pe Hans Chadai Kai, Utro Bhavjal Par. —Dariya Sahib This world is like a big ocean. A jiva can’t cross it on his own. It is the Satguru who boards the disciple on the ship of ‘Naam’ and thereby helps him cross this ocean. III 7. Strange Are The Ways Of Sants! Pandit Baad Badey So Jhutha. Ram Ke Kahai Jagat Gati Pavai, Khand Kahai Mukh Meetha. Pavak Kahai Paanth Jo Dahai, Jal Kahai Trisha Bujhayi. Bhojan Kahai Bhukh Jo Bhagai, To Duniya Tari Jayi. Nar Ke Sung Suwa Hari Bolai, Hari Partap Na Janai. Jo Kabhin Udi Jaye Jungle Mein, To Hari Surti Na Aanai. Binu Dekhe Binu Aras Paras Binu, Naam Liye Keya Hoyi. Dhan Ko Kahai Dhanik Jo Hovai, Nirdhan Rahai Na Koyi. Sanchi Preeti Vishya Maya So, Hari Bhaktan Ki Phansi. Kah-hin Kabir Ek Naam Bhaje Binu, Bandhe Yam Puri Jasi. —Kabir Sahib If a devotee can attain salvation simply by reciting Ram-Ram, he can make his tongue sweet simply by saying sugar-sugar. But such a thing never happens. If 28 SAHIB BANDGI reciting Jal-Jal could satisfy a devotee’s thirst; reciting Bread-Bread could satisfy his hunger; reciting Fire-Fire could produce fire, the whole of the world could certainly achieve salvation simply by reciting Ram-Ram and no jiva would have been here. But such a thing has not happend so far. Even a parrot can be taught to recite Ram-Ram but this doesn’t help it have a knowledge of Ram. And if that Parrot gets a chance to fly away to some forest, it forgets Ram-Ram after somtime. Reciting Naam without knowing and without experiencing doesn’t prove fruitable. If one could obtain wealth simply by reciting wealth-wealth, none would have been poor and none would have felt any need to labour for earning. Reciting sugar-sugar can’t make our mouth sweet but if someone puts sugar into our tongue, it will certainly taste sweet without requiring any hard labour on our part. All that is needed is to keep the tongue and the teeth active. Reciting Ram-Ram can’t help us realise Ram, but if some true Satguru awakens that Naam (Ram-Param Purush) within a devotee, the latter needn’t labour much. All that he has to do is to recite that Naam. Doing this much alone can help the devotee achieve salvation. Niranjan Dhan Tumro Durbar, Jahan Tanik Na Nyaye Vichar. Rung Mahal Mein Basein Muskhre, Pass Tere Sardar. Dhoor-Dhoop Mein Sadhu Birajain, Bhaye Jo Bhavnidhi Par. Veshya Aurey Khasa Malmal, Gal Motiyan Ko Har. Pativrata Ko Milai Na Khadi, Sukha Niras Ahar. Pakhandi Ko Jug Mein Adar, Sant Ko Kahain Labar. Agyani Ko Param Viveki, Geyani Ko Moor Ganwar. Kah-hin Kabir Faqeer Pukari, Ulta Sabb Vyavhar. Sanch Kahey Jug Maran Dhaye, Jhuthan Ko Aitbar. —Kabir Sahib AMRIT VANI 29 Every thing in this world of Kal Niranjan is abnormal. There is nothing like justice and fair play here. Here the hypocrites are accorded warm welcome while the followers of truth are made to suffer. The people of the world believe in all that the hypocrites and unreal sages say but they don’t care for what the Sants say. Hum Basain Cham Ke Dham, Hamein Koyi Keya Janey. Pashu Panchhi Narnag Jahan Lagi, Sabai Cham Ko Saj. Chamai Cham Ko Daam Batorai, Cham Rung Ko Raj. Chamai Madai Chamai Povai, Chamai Karey Rasoyi. Chamai Cham Ko Parsi Jivavai, Cham Karai So Hoyi. Chamai Gavai Cham Bajavai, Cham Karat Hain Nach. Chamai Cham Ko Bhav Batavai, Cham Beech Hain Sanch. Kahain Kabir Suno Bhayi Sadho, Hum Hai Poorey Chamar. Jo Koyi Hum Ko Pahichanai, Utrey Bhavnidhi Par. —Kabir Sahibji Sahibji says that he has come into the world of leather where none has been able to recognise him. Here, it is the leather alone that dances, cooks food, eats and performs all other tasks. The true soul lies within this leather covered body. Sahibji says that he is a perfect cabbler in the sense that he has destroyed his leather and is residing in the soul. Anybody who recognises him can certainly cross this ocean of births and deaths. Bhayi Re, Bhram Bhagti Soo Jani. Jou Lau Nahin Sanch Soo Pahichani. Bhram Nachan Bhram Gayan, Bhram Japp Tapp Dani. Bhram Sewa Bhram Pooja, Aru Bhram Soo Pahichani. Bhram Shut Karam Sakal Sanhita, Bhram Geh Bun Jani. Bhram Indri Nigrah Keeyan, Bhram Guha Mein Bas. Bhram Ta Laun Janiye, Sooni Ki Karey Aas. 30 SAHIB BANDGI Bhram Sudh Sarir Joun Laun, Bhram Nav Binav. Bhram Bhani Ravi Dass To Laun, Jau Laun Chahe Thanv. —Ravi Dassji The devotion is nothing but an illusion without the knowledge of truth. Dancing, singing, worship, austerities and acts of charity also are the different forms of illusion. Six kinds of rituals are also an illusion. All the rituals mentioned in the vedas are also an illusion. It is on account of this illusion that man has been doing all such deeds. Even a Yogi who gains cotrol over his organs is in illusion. Sadhak who resides in a cave is in illusion. Moreover, if he desires to attain the formless, he is again in illusion as it is the Mind itself (Kal Purush) that is formless. In addition, as long as he has expectations from the body, he is in illusion, as the body is nothing but an illusion. So as long as one doesn’t take Naam from a Satguru, for all practical purposes he is in illusion. Any desire for any place or position in this world is nothing but illusion. Apanpau Aap Hi Bisro. Jaise Sonha Kanch Mandir Mein, Bharmati Bhoonki Maro. Jyun Kehri Bapu Nirkhi Koop Jal, Pratima Dekh Paro. Aisehin Madgaj Phatik Shila Per, Dasanni Ani Aro. Markat Muthi Swad Na Bisrai, Ghar Ghar Natat Phiro. Kahein Kabir Nalni Kai Suvna, Tohi Kaune Pakro. —Kabir Sahibji O Jiva! You have forgotten yourself. You have yourself got entangled in this illusion. Just as a dog living in a glass house takes his reflections as the presence of other dogs and continues to bark at them; a lion on taking his own reflection in water as another lion jumps into the well; an elephant moving on a hilly track begins to fight AMRIT VANI 31 with his own shadow; a monkey puts its hand into a narrow pitcher and collects grain in its hand but being unable to pull the closed first out, thinks as if someone has cought hold of it. However, if it lets the gram go, it can easily take his hand out but it is greedy for the gram and doesn’t want to lose them. In the meantime the hunter comes, puts the bells in his neck and makes it dance as per his desires; a parrot on catching the reed made by a hunter looks into the mirror and thinks that some other parrot has caught hold of it; Sahibji says that in the same manner none has cought the jiva. It is, rather, the jiva itself that has cought the Maya. This is because Maya has no power to catch hold of it. Jo Tum Torau Ram, Main Nahin Toroun. Tum Saun Tori Kavan Saun Joroon. Tirath Vrat Na Karoon Andesa, Tumharey Charan Kamal Ka Bharosa. Jahan Jahan Jayun Tumhari Pooja, Tum Sa Dev Aur Na Dooja. Main Apno Munn Hari Soun Joryun, Hari Saun Jori Saban Se Toriyon. Sabb Hi Pahar Tumhari Asa. Munn Karam Vachan Kahai Rai Dassa. —Ravi Dassji In order to highlight the worship of one God, Ravi Dassji says, “ O Ram! even if due to some reason you break your relation with me, I won’t do so. If I break my relation with you, with whom would I establish these. It is only you who are my support and in whom I have taken the refuge. I won’t worhsip anyone else but you.” He furthur says, “I have developed doubts regarding going on pilgrimages, observing fasts and the like as these can’t give me salvation. I trust only in you. I worship you wherever I am. There is no other deity like 32 SAHIB BANDGI you.” That is why he says that he has severed relations with all in order to establish these with you. Ishaq Asan Nal Kehi Kiti, Lok Mareinde Taane. Dil Di Vedan Koyi Na Janey, Under Des Bagane. Jis Noo Chat Amar Di Hovey, Soyi Amar Pachhane. Atash Ishaq Frar Tere Ne, Pal Vich Sarh Vikhayiyan . Jis Tann Lagge So Tann Janey, Dooja Koyi Na Janey. Main Anjani Nehun Ki Janan, Janey Suggad Siyane. Ais Mahi De Sadki Javan, Jis Da Koyi Na Sani. Roop Saroop Anoop Hai Usda, Shala Javani Mani. Hijar Terey Na Jhalli Kerke, Kamli Naam Dharaya. Suman Bukmun Umyun Hoke, Apna Vakat Langhaya. Ker Hun Nazar Karam Di Sayian, Na Ker Zor Dhagane. Hus Bulauna Tera Jani, Karan Her Vele. Pal Pal De Vich Hijar Di Peedon, Ishaq Marenda Dhele. Ro Ro Yad Karaan Din Rateen, Pichhle Vakat Vihane. Ishaq Tera Darkar Asanu, Har Vela Har Hiley. Pak Rasool Mohammad Sarvar, Merey Khas Vasiley. Bulleshah Je Miley Pyara, Lakh Karaan Shukrane. Isaq Asan Nal Kehi Keeti, Lok Mareinde Taane. —Bulleshawji Describing the pangs of separation, Bulleshaw says, “Only he who has suffered from the pangs of separation can understand it. None other can do so. Others can only taunt. This true love is like climbing the top of a high mountain through a difficult track. Only he who has reached Amarlok through this path can understand it. Then he advises the devotees to to fix concentration on the holy Naam. Dying while living and realising the beloved Sahib can help one free oneself from this pang of separation. Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukdi Ei. Pahar Nukta Chhor Hisaban Noo, Der Door Kufar Diyan Baban Noo. AMRIT VANI 33 Lah Dojakh Gor Azavan Noo, Ker Saf Diley Diyan Khavaban Noo. Gal Aise Ghar Vich Dukdi Ei, Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukdi Ei. Aivein Mattha Jimin Ghasayida, Lanma Pa Mahirab Dikhayi Da. Parh Kalma Lok Hasayi Da, Dil Under Samajh Na Liaida. Kadi Baat Sachi Vee Lukdi Ei, Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukdi Ei. Keyi Haji Bun Bun Aaye Ji, Gal Neela Jame Payey Ji. Haj Beich Takey Lai Khaye Ji, Bhala Eh Gal Kihnu Bhaye Ji. Kadi Baat Sachi Bhi Lukdi Ei, Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukdi Ei. Ik Jungle Bahireen Jadey Nee, Ik Dana Roz Lai Khandey Nee. Besamajh Vajood Thakande Nee, Ghar Avan Ho Ke Mande Nee. Eivein Chilhiyan Vich Jind Sukdi Ei, Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukdi Ei. Pharh Murshid Abad Khudai Ho, Vich Masti Beparvahi Ho. Bekhahash Benavayi Ho, Vich Dil De Khoob Safayi Ho. Bulla Baat Sachi Kadoun Rukdi Ei, Ik Nukte Vich Gal Mukti Ei. —BulleShaw ji Bulleshaw says that the clarity of a mystery can make the whole struggle successful. Nothing remains to be done then. Realisation of Sahib becomes possible. But the world has not been in a position to understand this fact. That is why the people seem to be entangled in 34 SAHIB BANDGI outward rituals. Lying on the ground, one tries to rub one’s forehead on earth to pleasure God, while the other one thinks of going on long pilgrimages for the same purpose. Some leave their home and hearth and go to forests in search of God while others torture their bodies through practice of Hath Yog. (Harsh exercises). All these things can’t help one realise Supreme lord. The wonderful and strange thing is that a devotee’s heart becomes pure and clean after he seeks the shelter of true living master and takes the holy mantra from him. the true master makes his life care free by enabling him realise God. This is the only secret. After seeking the shelter of a Satguru all the useless wanderings come to a end. Aa Mil Yar Sar Lai Meri, Meri Jan Dukhhan Ne Gheri. Under Khvab Vichhora Hoya, Khabrak Na Paindi Teri. Suni Bin Vich Lutti Sayian, Chor Shang Ne Gheri. Mullan Kazi Rah Batavan, Dain Dharam De Phere. Ih Taan Thug Ne Jug De Jhivar, Lavan Jal Chuferey. Karam Sharan De Dharam Batavan, Sungle Pavan Pairin. Jat Mazhab Ih Ishaq Na Ruchhda, Ishaq Shra Da Vairi. Nadiou Par Mulak Sajjan Da, Lobh Lahir Ne Gheri. Satguru Beri Pahri Khalote, Tain Kyun Layi-Ei-Deri. Bulleshah Shoh Tainoo Milsi, Dil Noo Deh Daleri. Preetam Pass Te Tolna Kisnoo, Bhuliaun Sikhar Dupahri. Aa Mil Yar Sar Lai Meri, Meri Jan Dukhan Ne Gheri. —Bulleshah ji Using a satire on those engaged in the observance of riturals, Bulleshah says that a jiva separated from Sahib is all alone in this world as there is none here to show him the path that leads to Him. On the contrary, the dealers in rituals have held jivas in their grip and are cheating and looting them in every possible manner. AMRIT VANI 35 Furthur, he says that the only perfect and true Satguru who has the power to take jivas to the abode of God is standing with the ship of Naam. So he asks jivas to board this ship without any delay. He assures them that the Satguru will help realise Sahib who is very much near him (jiva). This happy union with Him will rid jiva of all his sorrows and sufferings. Aavo Seyio Ral Diyo Ni Badhayi. Main Bar Paya Ranjah Mahi. Aj Taan Roze Mubarak Chadiya. Ranjha Sadey Vehde Vadiya. Hath Khundi Modey Kanbal Dhariya. Chakan Vali Shakal Banayi. Aavo Seyio Ral Diyo Ni Badhayi. Mukat Gouan De Vich Rulda. Jungle Juhan De Vich Rulda. Hai Koyi Allah De Val Bhulda. Asal Hakikat Khabar Na Kayi. Aavo Seyio Ral Diyo Ni Badhayi. Bulleshaw Ik Sauda Keeta. Peeta Jahar Pyala Peeta. Na Kujh Laha Tota Leeta. Darad Dukhan Di Gathri Chayi. Aavo Seyio Ral Diyo Ni Badhayi. Bulleshaw says that he has realised his lover (Param Purush) in his Satguru who is a Ranjha—a true lover for him. That Satguru looks like a simple grazier who is wandering in this worldly forest with a stick in hand and a blanket on the shoulders. However, none has been able to recognise his identity. This is because Sahib Himself has descended on this earth in the guise of a Satguru. He furthur says that he has struck a deal with his Satguru. This is the deal of true love on his part for his Satguru (a Ranjha for him). Furthur, he says that he is now 36 SAHIB BANDGI suffering from the pangs of separation from his Satguru and has a keen desire to find him. Apna Duss Thikana, Kidhron Aya Kidhar Jana. Jis Thaney Da Maan Karein Toon, Ohne Tere Nal Na Jana. Julam Karein Te Lok Satavein, Kasab Pharion Lut Khana. Ker Lai Chavad Char Dihadey, Oudak Toon Uth Jana. Toon Kidhraun Aya, Kidhar Jana, Apna Dass Thikana. People of the world wander without aim, carelessly, Bulleshaw says, “O Man! Just think, wherefrom have you come and where have you to go. Why are you feeling proud of material possessions? Don’t you know you have to depart from this world leaving every thing here? Why do you tease and torture others? You are free to do what you like for a short period only. After this, you have to die and go to the Lord of death. So it is better for you to be alert right now.” Antt Kal Jabb Jiv Ka Aavey, Yatha Karam Tabb Dehi Pavai. Haith Dwar Jabb Jeev Nikasha, Narak Khani Mein Pavai Vasa. Nabhi Dwar Se Jeev Jabb Jayi, Chalchar Yoni Mein Praktayi. Mukh Dwar Se Jeev Pyana, Andaj Khani Main Tasu Thikana. Netar Dwar Jeev Jabb Jata. Makkhi Adi Tann Ko Pata. Shravan Dwar Te Jeev Jabb Chala, Prait Deh Paye Tatkala. Dasham Dwar Se Jeev Jabb Jayi, AMRIT VANI 37 Swarg Lok Mein Vasa Payi. Raja Hoye Ke Jug Mein Ayi. Bhogey Bhog Bahu Vidhi Bhayi. 11vey Dwar Se Jeev Jabb Jata. Param Purush Ke Lok Smata. Bahuri Na Is Bhav Sagar Aata. Phir-Phir Nahin Garabh Hi Smata. —Kabir Sahib ji After death, a jiva assumes another body as per his karmas. Sahibji tells us about the species a jiva will be born after its death. He says that if the pranas (life force) escape through the anus, the jiva will go to hell because it is undoubtedly an aperture that leads to hell. The coming out of faeces through anus confirms it. If the pranas escape through the path that excretes urine, the jiva is born as an aquaticanimal. The coming out of urine confirms it. If the pranas escape through mouth, the jiva is reborn as an insect that is born out of food grains and feeds on them. The wide opening of mouth confirms it. If the pranas escape through nostrils, the jiva will be reborn as a bird or any other species born out of eggs. If the pranas escape through eyes, the jiva is reborn as a fly or as some species of the same kind. Remaining open of eyes confirms it. If the pranas escape through ears, the jiva goes straight way in prait yuni (a species of ghosts etc.) Even the very sight of the body of such a person will cause fear. If the pranas escape through the 10th dwara, the jiva goes to heaven and is reborn as a king. The pleasant looking face of the jiva confirms it. If the pranas escape through the 11th dwara, the jiva will achieve salvation and will go to his original abode—The Amarlok. III 38 SAHIB BANDGI 8. Inperfect Guru Jaka Guru Hai Geerhi, Girhi Chela Hoye. Keech Keech Ke Dhovte, Daag Na Chhute Koye. A mud stain can’t be removed by mud itself. Likewise, a Guru who is family holders can’t be expected to enable a family holder disciple attain salvation. This is because such a Guru is himself in the grip of Mayajal. Ja Guru Te Bhram Na Mitey, Bhranti Na Jeev Ka Jaye. So Guru Jhuta Janiye, Teyagat Dair Na Laye. A Guru who can’t clear the doubts of his disciple is a liar and deserves to be deserted. Bandhe Ko Bandha Mila, Chhutai Kaun Upaye. Ker Sewa Nirbandh Ki, Pal Mein Ley Chhuraye. Pura Satguru Na Mila, Suni Adhuri Seekh. Swang Yati Ka Pahini Ke, Ghar Ghar Mange Bheekh. Without a Satguru it is not possible to achieve complete knowledge. An imperfect Guru will only teach his disciples to wear the clothes of a sadhu and beg from door to door. Ja Guru Ko To Gum Nahin, Pahan Diya Bataye. Shish Shodhey Bin Seiya, Par Na Pahuncha Jaye. A Guru who himself is ignorant of the path of truth, will guide his disciples to worship the stones. However, stone worship can’t take us across the ocean of births and deaths. Kabir Bera Sar Ka, Ouper Lada Sar. Papi Ka Papi Guru, Yun Boora Sansar. What will happen if one loads iron on an iron boat? Certainly, such a boat can’t prove helpful in crossing the river. The same thing is happening in this world as well. The sinners are taking the support of Gurus to cross to ocean of mayajal. AMRIT VANI 39 There has been a mushroom growth of imperfect Gurus. That is why this world is suffering for want of perfect and true Gurus who can help them seek salvation. Guru Kiya Hai Deh Ka, Satguru Chinha Nahin. Bhav Sagar Ke Jal Mein, Phir Phir Gota Khahin. Jhuthe Guru Ke Paksh Ko, Tajat Na Keeje Bar. Par Na Pavai Shabad Ka, Bharmein Barambar. Guru Keejiye Jani Ke, Pani Peejai Chhani. Bina Vichare Guru Karey, Parai Chourasi Khani. Bhesh Dekh Matt Bhuliye, Boojhi Leejiye Geyan. Bina Kasauti Hoat Nahin, Kanchan Ki Pahichan. We shouldn’t take the persons wearing the clothes of sadhus as Sants. The real identity of a Sant can be established from the spiritual knowledge he possesses. Without proper touchstone, it is not possible to identify gold even. Long grown hair and beard, a tilak on forehead, red or yellow coloured clothes and the like are nothing but pakhand (hypocrisy). These have nothing to do with truth and reality that is needed in the path of spiritual enlightenment. Guru Guru Sabb Vishav Pukare, Guru Soyi Jo Bhram Nivare. Bahut Guru Hain Us Jug Mahin, Harein Dravya Dukh Kou Nahin. Guru Mila Nahin Shish Mila, Lalach Khela Daav. Donon Boorey Majhdhar Mein, Chari Pathar Ki Naav. Where neither the Guru not the disciple is truthful and right, and each has sought the association of the other for his own selfish interests, rest assured both of them are boarding a stone boat that is bound to drown in the ocean of birhts and deaths. The disciple in his own interest wants that the Guru shouldn’t pay any heed to his vices while the Guru thinks that the disciple may do what he likes, but he 40 SAHIB BANDGI should continue to serve him (Guru) as usual. Can such selfish fellow ever hope to realise God. Mayi Moondoo Us Guru Ki, Jatey Bhram Na Jaye. Apun Boora Dhar Mein, Chela Diya Bahaye. Sahibji says that he would like to shave the head of the Guru’s mother who (Guru) can’t clear the doubts of his disciple. Such a Guru drifts away in the current of the ocean of births and deaths, taking the disciple as well along with him. Gurua To Sasta Bhaya, Paisa Tek Pachas. Ram Naam Dhan Bechi Kai, Karai Shish Ki Aas. Sahibji says that in Kal Yuga the devotees can find a large number of Gurus. Such Gurus bless the dovotees with Naam in exchange for money and expect that the number of their disciples will increase with the passage of time. These pakhandis and imperfect Gurus don’t possess the real Naam and so can’t be expected to fix the real price for the holy Naam. What will be the future of the disciples of such Gurus, can well be imagined. Purey Satguru Ke Bina, Pura Shish Na Hoye. Guru Lobhi Shish Lalchi, Dooni Dajhan Soye. Guruva To Ghar Ghar Phirey, Diksha Hamari Ley. Kai Booro Kai Ubro, Taka Pardani Deh. The Kal Yugi Gurus go from house to house to bless the devotees with Naam. They are not at all worried about what happens to their disciples. They are concerned only with the money they have to collect from them. Aage Andha Koop Mein, Dooje Liya Bulaye. Donon Boorey Bapure, Nikse Kaun Upaye. The ingorant Guru himself was lying in the well of doubts and misunderstanding and he threw his disciple even in the same well. How can both of them hope to come out? AMRIT VANI 41 Again, the Gurus who themselves are entangled in the superstitions regarding evil spirits, ill-effects of planets etc. make their disciple also fall in the same line. III 9. Parkhis (The Assayers) Hira Tahan Na Kholiye, Jahan Kunjron Ki Hat. Kasi Kari Bandho Gathri, Loghu Apni Baat. Don’t open your bundle containing diamonds at a place where the vegetable sellers live. This is because such persons won’t be able to estimate the real value of diamonds for want of knowledge of the same. So it is better to tie the bundle tightly and move away from such a place. Unfolding the rare and wonderful mysteries before the ignorant fellows who don’t know the worth of the real Naam they have been blessed with, is just like opening the bundle of diamonds before the vegetable sellers. Jabb Gun Ko Grahak Milay, Tabb Gun Lakh Bikaye. Jabb Gun Ko Grahak Nahin, Kouri Badley Jaye. When one finds a customer with ability to judge the worth of a thing, one can sell the same in lakhs, but when such a person is not to be found, the same thing has to be sold at a very cheap rate. Likewise, a devotee who knows the worth of the holy ‘Naam’, is prepared to pay any price including his life as well for it. But if he doesn’t know the real worth, he will try to have it free of cost. Gahak Miley To Kuchh Kahun, Na Taru Jhagra Hoye. Andho Aage Roiye, Apna Deeda Khoye. It is useful and good to have some discussion about knowledge only with a person who has the desire to know 42 SAHIB BANDGI the truth. If we do so with some fool and ignorant fellow, he will start quarrelling with us. Weeping and wailing before a blind will only prove harmful to our eyes. It is the very nature of people to have quarrels with the holy Sants. The only reason behind it is the lack of real customers who can estimate the worth of truth. Hansa Bagula Ek Sa, Mansrovar Manhi. Baga Dhidora Machhri, Hansa Moti Khanhi. Hansa and a Heron look alike Because of having the same colour. In the universe, we find the Sants (real Hansas) delivering sermons, but we also find many pakhandis (the herons) in the guise of Sants moving from one place to the other. Nevertheless, there is some definite distinction between the two. While the herons move in search of fish, the hansas move in search of pearls. The pakhandi Gurus remain in search of such evil doers who are wealthy enough to satisfy their (Guru’s) hunger and lust for wealth, whereas the Satgurus remain insearch of those who have a keen desire to know the truth. Ek Bar Mein Parkhiye, Na Woh Barambar. Balu Touhu Kirkira, Jo Chhanai Sau Bar. If you have to judge a person, do it in a single attempt. There is no need to do so repeatedly. Even if we try a hundred times to filter sand by means of a cloth, the sandy taste will still be there. Likewise, a foolish person can’t fully part with his foolishness. Hira Parkhai Johri, Shabadhin Parkhai Sadh. Kabir Parkhai Sadhu Ko, Ta Ka Mata Agadh. A Jeweller can judge whether a diamond is real or artificial. A sadhu before uttering some words thinks whether these are sweet or bitter. He doesn’t use such words as can cause annoyance to others. But the wise men AMRIT VANI 43 who are great thinkers as well, judge whether the sadhu or Sant is a real one or a pakhandi in the guise of Sant. Jo Hansa Moti Chugai, Kankar Kiyun Patiaye. Kankar Matha Na Navai, Moti Milai To Khaye. A Hansa who feeds on pearls, needn’t eat stones. It bends its head only when it finds some pearls to feed on. Likewise, the devotees who feed on the holy Naam, don’t bow their heads before all. They bow their heads only when they see their Satguru. Ek Achamba Dekhiya, Heera Haat Bikaye. Parkhanhara Bahiro, Kouri Badle Jaye. Sahibji says that he saw a strange thing in the bazar. A customer who was not a good judge of diamonds, wanted to buy a diamond at a nominal price. Those who don’t know the real worth of the holy Naam, take it as a useless thing and avoid seeking the shelter of some real Satguru for the purpose. Kabir Khand-hin Chhandike, Kankar Chuni Chuni Khaye. Rattan Ganwaya Rait Mein Pher Pichhe Pachhitaye. It is the ignorant persons who prefer to take pebbles from the store of Maya instead of taking sugar from the store of Sahibji. Such persons lose the matchless diamond (in the form of Naam) in sand and repent in the long run. Hira Para Ju Gail Mein, Duniya Ja Mein Dole. Jahan Hira Ka Parkhi, Tahan Hira Ka Moal. The diamond is lying on the path wherefrom the people pass, but strange to say, every one takes it as a piece of glass and passes by. Thus the diamond ramains like a useless stone. However, as soon as some expert jeweller appears on the scene, the real worth of the diamond comes to the notice of all. The holy ‘Naam’ the Satguru are in possession of, is also like a diamond. Nevertheless, the worldly 44 SAHIB BANDGI people don’t have any instrument to judge its worth. However, as soon as some devotee with some spiritual knowledge comes to know of this invaluable diamond, he surrenders his body, mind and wealth to receive it. III 10. Denouncer (Back-Biter) A backbiter (denouncer) smoothens our nature even without using water or soap. Therefore, it is better to keep a denouncer always with you and if possible get a house constructed for his stay. A denouncer through his acts of backbiting helps in ridding us of our sins. There is a loss in the death of a denouncer. So he shouldn’t die. We should pray for his long life. Sahibji says that one can seek the shelter of a Satguru by the good wishes of a backbiter. That is to say a backbiter by his repeated acts of backbiting turns a person into noble being thereby enabling him to easily have the blessings and grace of a Satguru. Sahibji says that his backbiter has died and he has now become helpless. He is unable to find any other fellow who undertakes the task of denouncing him and making his Name spread far and wide. The denouncer of a sage can’t succeed in washing off the filth of his mind even if he visits 68 pilgrimages and washes his body repeatedly with soap. He will find a place in hell, even if he goes round the world 56 crore times. III AMRIT VANI 45 11. Pakhand (Hypocrisy) Pooja Sewa Nem Vratt, Gudiyan Ka Sa Kheil. Jabb Lug Piv Parsai Nahin, Tabb Lug Sansai Meil. All these modes of worship, idol worship, rites and rituals etc. are nothing but playing with dolls. As long as a girl remains unmarried and is not able to find a true husband, she derives pleasure from playing with unreal dolls. Such a play appears to her as a real and true one. But this play with dolls appears to be of no charm to her when she finds a real husband. Likewise, we find pleasure in observing fasts, rites and rituals and in performing idol worship etc. because these appear to us as real ones in the given set of circumstances. But as soon as we come in contact with some real Satguru and get blessed with the holy Naam, all these begin to appear as worthless things like the dolls. Pahan Ko Keya Poojiye, Jo Nahin Dey Javab. Andha Nar Asha Mukhi, Yun Hi Khovey Aav. What is the use of worshipping the stone that doesn’t reply! How can it make us noble? It can’t remove the evils in us and thus can’t guide us properly. It, so to say, can’t have any check on our ignorance. Such a worship behoves only the ignorant ones. Pahan Poojey Hari Miley, To Mein Poojun Pahar. Ta Se To Chakki Bhali, Peesey Khaye Sansar. Kankar Patthar Joori Ke, Masjid Leyi Banaye. Ta Chari Mulla Bang De, Bahira Huwa Khudaye. Mulla Chari Kilkariya, Allah Na Bahira Hoye. Jehi Karan Tu Bang De, Dil Hi Under Soye. Nahaye Dhoye Keya Bhaya, Jo Munn Mail Na Jaye. Meen Sada Jal Mein Rahai, Dhoye Bas Na Jaye. Visiting holy places and taking the holy dip there is of no use as these can in no way help us control the evil 46 SAHIB BANDGI tendencies of mind. We must remember that a fish, inspite of living in water, can’t rid itself of its foul smell. Then how can anyone hope to rid himself of the foul smell of his sins simply by taking one or two dips at holy places. It is this wrong notion about Bhakti that has made man indulge in all kinds of evil acts without any fear. Mala Pherat Yug Geya, Phira Na Munn Ka Pher. Kar Ka Manka Dar De, Munn Ka Munka Pher. Sahibji says to the hypocrites that they have wasted a lot of time in telling of beads but have not so far succeeded in freeing themselves of the vices inherent in their mind. So it is better for them to leave this telling of beads and instead take to the worship of God. Mala To Kar Mein Phirai, Jeebh Phirai Mukh Mahin. Manuva To Chaun Disi Phirai, Yeh To Sumrin Nahin. Kabir Mala Munn Hi Ki, Aur Sansari Bhekh. Mala Pharey Hari Miley, Galey Rahat Ke Dekh. Sahibji says that the true way of telling beads is to involve the mind in it because other modes are nothing but a display of false show. If it were possible to realise God by simply telling of beads, Rahat ( a bird with a natural necklace round the neck) should be the first to do so because he manages to complete the counting of beads many times. Ram Rahey Bun Bheetre, Guru Ki Na Pooji Aas. Kahain Kabir Pakhand Sabb, Jhuthey Sada Nirash. Sati Na Peesey Peesna, Jo Peesai So Raand. Sadhu Bheekh Na Mangei, Jo Mange So Bhand. Teerath Vratt Kari Jug Mua, Joorey Pani Nahaye. Satya Naam Janey Bina, Kal Yugan Yug Khaye. Kabir Thakur Pojhi Mole Le, Munn Hath Teerath Jahi. Dekha Dekhi Swangu Dhari, Bhoole Bhatka Khahi. Karam Phanda Jag Phandiya, Jap Tapp Pooja Dheyan. Jahi Shabad Te Mukat Hoye, So Na Pra Pahichan. AMRIT VANI 47 Moond Mondaye Hari Miley, Sabb Koyi Ley Mondaye. Bar Bar Ke Moondte, Bher Na Baikhunth Jaye. Kabir Saligram Ka, Mohin Bharousa Nahin. Kal Kahar Ki Chot Mein, Binsi Jaye Chhin Mahin. Sahibji says that he has no faith in the God carved out of stone as it will for itself perish in a moment by a single strong stroke of Kal. And in such a case it is not possible for it to make others immortal. Kubudhi Ko Soojhai Nahin, Uthi Uthi Deval Jaye. Dil Dehra Ko Khabri Nahin, Pathar Te Kah Paye. The ignorant persons rise in the morning and go to temples etc. to worship the idols. Such persons don’t realise that it is the heart itself that is the true temple. Teerath Vratt Kari Jugg Mua, Joorey Pani Nahaye. Satya Naam Janey Bina, Kal Grasa Khaye. Since ages the worldly people have been busy observing fasts, visiting holy places and taking holy dips but they won’t be able to escape from the grip of Kal without seeking the shelter of some true Satguru. Kesh Kah Bigariya, Jo Moondo Sou Bar. Munn Ko Kyun Nahin Moondiye, Ta Mein Vishai Vikar. Sahibji asks to hypocrites, who get their heads shaved and pose as the devotees of Hari, as to what harm have the hair of the head done to them that they get them cut again and again. He furthur advises them to shave the Mind instead that is the store house of all sorts of evils and vices. Mun Mevasi Moondiye, Keshhin Moondey Kahi. Jo Kiya So Munn Kiya, Kesh Kiya Kachhu Nahin. Tann Ko Yogi Sabb Karai, Munn Ko Birla Koye. Sahje Sabb Vidhi Payiye, Jo Munn Jogi Hoye. Sahibji says that anyone can make his body look like a yogi by wearing Bhagwa coloured (golded yellow) clothes and using other decoratives but it is really a rare 48 SAHIB BANDGI Yogi who makes his Mind Yogi by controlling its evil tendencies. A devotee can achieve anything he likes only by making his mind a Yogi. III 12. The Mystery About Sahibji Anant Koti Brahmand Mein, Bandi Chhor Kahaye. So To Purush Kabir Hai, Jan-Ni Jana Na Maye. In the year 1398 a wonderful incedent happened in the Lahar Tara Talab of Kashi. A dazzling and amazing light descended from the sky and appeared in the form of a small child on a lotus flower. Swami Ashtanandji, the disciple of Swami Ramanandji Maharaj saw this wonderful sight and was very much astonished. He went to his Guru and told him all about that he witnessed. Swami Ramanandji said that the whole world will come to know of the mysteries of this small child in due course of of time. With the passage of time, this child was called as the Sant Samrat Hazur Sahib Kabirji Maharaj. From his early childhood, Sahibji began to spread the light of Sathya Bhakti (True Devotion) among the masses. He began to move from place to place to tell the people about the true form of Bhakti. When someone told Sahibji that one cannot achieve the real knowledge without a Guru, he thought for a while and then decided to seek Swami Ramanandji Maharaj. Sahibji preached against the prevailing hypocrisy and the unreal and unscientific rites and rituals that were harming the society. The pakhandis (hypocrites) and other selfish elements began to oppose Sahibji because they realised that the preaching of Sathya Bhakti would badly damage their profession and they won’t be able to befool AMRIT VANI 49 and loot the people in the Naame of religion. Some began to call him a Muslim, some began to call him a low caste person, others called him a Householder and so on. They hid the truth of the incarnation of Sahibji and coined (cooked) many unreal stories about him. Sahibji’s personality was a reflection of all around virtues. The yogis have called him as Yogi Raj because he knew all the secrets of the inner world as well as of the Brahmand. Even great yogis like Guru Gorakh Nath were all praise for the great knowledge he possessed. The poets have also recognised his greatness as a poet and have elevated him to the status of a Kavi-pravar (the greatest poet). He has expressed his view in such a simple language that even a commener can understand it easily. His language is like honey that tastes sweet from every side. Even an illiterate person riding on a cart recites his couplets with as much ease as a learned professor can. Dr. Hazari Prasad Dwivedi has written— “In the history of thousand years of Hindi literature, no writer of the caliber of Kabirji has been born.” Among the Sants he occupies the status of a Sant Samrat. He was not just a Sant. He was, infact, the Sahib Himself. The followers whom he took to Amorlok were called as Sants. The satirists have accorded him the status of a great Vyangkar (satirists). The truth of this can be verified from the fact that even the modern satirists have not been able to pass such satires. When the pakhandis felt that their interests were being harmed, they began to defame Sahibji. They also tried to torture him in many ways. 52 times, he was awarded death punishment. This is also called as 52 Kasni. At one time, his Ashram was burnt down; on an other occasion he was held in chains and thrown into the swelling water of the river Ganges. Once he was put in a 50 SAHIB BANDGI big Deg (cooking vessel) and burnt alive. Every time he escaped death, since his body was not made of five material elements. No great and noble soul has ever suffered torture and humilation to the extent Sahibji did. Kabirji knew that the pakhandis (hypocrites) had spread many misunderstandings about him. Therefore, he decided to tell the world his true identity before his departure from the scene. When, after preaching Sathya Bhakti among the masses for 120 years, he had to return to his Amarlok, he declared that he would depart from the world on Magh Sudi Ekadsi (According to the Hindus— an auspicious 11th month falling between mid Jan to mid Feb). On the day of his deaparture from the world, lakhs of his disciples including Vir Singh Baghel, the king of Kashi and Bijli Khan Pathan of Maghar and thousands of pakhandis and spectators had assembled there. Both Bijli Khan and Vir Singh Baghel was good friend as well. King Vir Singh ordered his Senapati to take the dead body of Kabirji (after his departure from the world) to Kashi for the last rites as per Hindu tradition. When Bijli Khan came to know of it, he said that he would not allow such a thing to happen. He will, instead, bury the dead body as per Islamic tradition. Both the disciples stuck to their view points. Moreover, Bijli Khan reminded King Bir Singh that Sahibji had spent whole of his life in Kashi and he (Bijli Khan) had raised no objection, but when Sahibji had of his own accord come to Maghar to departure from the world, he (Bijli Khan) had the right over his dead body. When they failed to reach any accord, it was decided that they would have a fight and he who won, would have the right to take the dead body with him. Both of them drew their swords. However, the Sahibji performed a wonder. There appeared a dazzling white light. There was a word from the sky— “Uthavo Parda, Nahin Hai Murda. AMRIT VANI 51 Ai-Re Murakh Nadana, Tum Na Hum Ko Nahin Pahchana.” When the sheet covering the body was raised, all those present were astonished to find that there was no dead body underneath. Instead, there were only the lotus flowers that the people had offered. None before Sahibji had performed such a wonder and none would be able to do so in the time to come. All the spiritually enlightened souls and even incarnations came to this universe from the wombs of their mothers and left their dead bodies after their departure from here. This mysterious incident confirms the fact that Sahibji was neither a normal human being nor any god. He was, instead, Satya Purush Himself. On seeing this wonder, both Bijli Khan and Vir Singh hugged each other and wept over their folly. The Hindus took the flowers and erected a Smadhi while the Muslims took the sheet and erected a mausoleum. In this way, Kabiji removed all the misunderstandings regarding his real identity from the minds of the people. Still the pakhandis adopt all foul and unfair means to mislead the people from the real path of Bhakti. Today, these pakhandis have once again started their compaign against the true Bhakti being preached by our panth. They have made every possible attempt to defame and torture me. Many plots have been hatched to kill me even. The burning of our Ashrams at akhnoor and at other places is an indication of their nefarious designs. Some have called me as Musalman while others have cooked many unreal stories about me. Twice they have attempted to poison me. This is exactly a glimpse of the treatment they meted out to Kabirji Maharaj during his lifetime. Jalata Aa Raha Hai Kutiya Kabir Ki Kaun. Aaj Bhi Besharam Laga Isi Hoar Mein Kaun. 52 SAHIB BANDGI Talash Mein Nikla To Paye Kuchh Chor. Chura Pakhand Jo They Bech Rahey Shahar Ke Sabb Aur. Infact none can be blamed for it. It is the Mind that is behind all such happenings. The Kal Purush (Munn) through his agents has spread the unreal Bhakti in 3 lokas. Mind is tring its best to prevent the spread of real and true form of Bhakti. This is because it fully understands that if the jivas seek the shelter of true Satguru, they will be able to free themselves from its clutches and will reach their original source—the Amarlok. This is the main reason behind the opposition to the holy Sants. Neverthless the holy Sants have to discharge their duties at all costs. The worldly obstacles can’t stop them from spreading the real message of true-Sathya Bhakti. It is the Sahib and his holy Sants alone that are helping the jivas free themselves from the sorrows and sufferings they have been subjected to by Kal Niranjan. Just imagine! What would happen if there were no Sants in the world? Aag Lagi Sansar Mein, Jhar Jhar Girey Angar. Santt Na Hotey Jagat Mein, Jal Marta Sansar. So the jivas feel peaceful comfortable as long as the holy Sants remain in the universe of Kal. Those who seek the shelter of such holy Sants attain salvation and reach their real home—Amarlok. III AMRIT VANI 53 13. Kabirji Was The Sahib Himself (Say The Holy Sants) Vah Vah Kavir Ke Guru Poora Hai, Vah Vah Kabir Guru Poora Hai. Poorey Guru Ke Main Bali Jouhon, Ja Ka Sakal Jahura Hai. —Nanak Dev Ji Mero Kantt Kabir Hain, Var Aur Na Varihon. Dadu Teen Tilak Hai, Chit Aur Na Dharihon. —Dadu Dayal Ji Gagan Mandal Se Utre, Sahib Purush Kabir. Chola Dhara Khwas Ka, Tore Yam Janjir. —Garib Dass Ji Dass Garib Kabir Ko Chera. Satya Lok Amarpur Dera. Amrit Pan Amiye Rus Chokha. Peeve Hansa Nahin Dokha. —Garib Dass Ji Bahut Jeev Atke Rahey, Bin Satguru Bhav Mahin. Dadu Naam Kabir Bin, Chhutey Ekou Nahin. —Dadu Dayal Ji Dadu Baithi Jahaj Per, Gaye Samunder Teer. Jal Mein Machhi Jo Rahein, Kahey Kabir Kabir. —Dadu Dayal Ji Anant Koti Brahmand Mein, Bandi Chhor Kahaye. So To Purush Kabir Hai, Jan-ni Jana Na Maye. —Garib Dass Ji Sahib Purush Kabir Ne, Deh Dharey Na Koye. Shabad Swarupi Roop Hai, Ghat Ghat Bolai Soye. —Garib Dass Ji Dhani Kabir Dhani Vou Satguru Jin Param Tatt Lakhaya. Kahein Rai Dass Suno Ho Swami, Panoun Tumhari Aya. —Ravi Dass Ji 54 SAHIB BANDGI Swami Jo Tum Gavou So Houn Gaoun, Tumhara Geyat Vicharoon. Kahein Rai Dass Suno Ho Swami, Bharam Karam Sabb Chharun. —Ravi Dass Ji III 14. Satguru (The True Living Master) Satguru Ke Updesh Ka, Suniya Ek Vichar. Jo Satguru Milta Nahin, Jata Yam Ke Dwar. Yam Dwarey Mein Doot Sabb, Karte Ainchatani. Un Se Kabhu Na Chhut-ta, Phirta Charon Khani. Chari Khani Mein Bharamta, Kabhun Na Lagta Par. So Phera Sub Miti Geya, Satguru Ke Upkar. Satguru Sharan Na Aavhin, Phir Phir Hoye Akaj. Jeev Khoye Sabb Jayen Ge, Kal Tihun Pur Raj. The jivas who don’t seek the shelter of real Satguru remain entangled in the cycle of births and deaths. Kal continues to mislead them to keep them under his control. On the contrary, the Sants from Amarlok continue to impart true knowledge to jivas so that they may be able to free themselves from the grip of Kal and reach Amarlok— their true abode. Guru Manush Ker Jante, Charan Amrit Ko Pan. Te Ner Narkai Jahin Ge, Janaam Janaam Hoye Svan. Those who take Satguru as an ordinary man and show disrespect to him by taking Charn Amrit as water, deserve hell. They will take birth repeatedly as a dog. Satguru Din Dayal Ji, Tum Lag Meri Daur. Jaise Kag Jahaj Per, Soojhat Kathun Na Thor. For a bird, flying over sea there is no supporting hands except a ship. It takes a flight from the ship and AMRIT VANI 55 covers long distances. There is sea all around. It finds no other saviour and as such return back to the same ship. Likewise, in this Mayajal of Kal Purush there is no saviour other than a Satguru. Satguru Hai Barey Govind Te, Munn Mein Dekhu Vichar. Hari Sumire So Var Hai, Guru Sumire So Par. Kabira Hari Ke Roothte, Guru Ki Sharni Jaye. Kahein Kabir Guru Roothte, Hari Nahin Hoat Sahaye. If at any time, paramatma (God) gets annoyed with us, we can rely on the support of our Guru. He can save us from any harm. God will become helpless. In the family as well, we find that if father gets annoyed with his son and tries to give him a beating, the son runs and hides himself in the lap of his mother. The mother protects the child from the wrath of his father. It is in this way that a Satguru protects his disciples. However, if due to some reason the Guru gets annoyed, even God can’t give protection to the disciple in such a case. Satguru Shabad Ulanghi Ke, Jo Koyi Shishya Jaye. Jahan Jaye Tahan Kal Hai, Kahein Kabir Samjhaye. Guru Govind Dou Kharey, Kake Lagun Paye. Balihari Guru Aapno, Govind Diyo Bataye. Jaisi Preet Kutumb Ki, Taisi Guru Se Hoye. Kahein Kabir Ta Dass Ka, Palla Na Pakrey Koye. Guru Ko Keejai Dandvat, Koti Koti Parnaam. Keet Na Janey Bhring Ko, Guru Ker Le Aap Sman. Offer salutations to the Guru as many times as you can. A Guru transforms his disciple after his ownself in a manner a Bharinga transforms an insect after its ownself. A Bharing catches an insect and transmits its sound into it. If the insect hears this sound, it turns like the Bharinga. A 56 SAHIB BANDGI Satguru does so by blessing the Shishya with the holy Naam. Bin Satguru Bachai Nahin, Phir Boorai Bhav Mahin. Bhav Sagar Ki Tras Se, Satguru Pakre Bahin. Kotik Chanda Ughi, Suraj Koti Hazar. Timir To Nashai Nahin, Bin Guru Ghor Andhar. Guru Govind Ker Janiye, Rahiye Shabad Smaye. Milain To Dandwat Bandgi, Pal Pal Dheyan Lageye. Take Satguru as God and keep recting the holy Naam. If you happen to meet him somewhere, offer salutations and if he is somewhere away keep meditating on him. Lachh Kose Jo Guru Basai, Deejai Surti Pathaye. Shabad Turi Asbar Hai, Chhin Aavai Chhin Jaye. Even if the Guru is at a distance of thousands of miles, continue to keep your Surti (attention) towards him. The power of Naam will enable you to find your Guru before you within moments. Mool Dhayan Guru Roop Hai, Pooja Mool Guru Panv. Mool Naam Guru Vachan Hai, Mool Satya Satbhav. Guru Ko Sir Per Rakhiye, Chaliye Agya Mahin. Kahein Kabir Ta Dass Ko, Teen Lok Bhay Nahin. Guru Sman Data Nahin, Yachak Shish Sman. Teen Lok Ki Sampda, So Guru Deenhin Daan. A Satguru has the power to give all the material things including miraculous powers as and when he desires. So none can be as great a donor as a Satguru is and none can be as great a beggar as a disciple is. Guru Soun Geyan Ju Leejiye, Sees Deejiye Daan. Bahutak Bhondu Bahi Gaye, Rakhi Jeev Abhiman. After being blessed with the holy Naam, offer your head to him. Offering head means offering ego. Those who don’t give up their ego, get drowned in the cycle of births and deaths. AMRIT VANI 57 Saat Deep Nau Khand Mein, Guru Se Bara Na Koye. Karta Karai Na Kari Sakai, Guru Karai So Hoye. Guru Kumhar Shish Kunbh Hai, Ghari Ghari Kadai Khot. Antar Hath Sahar De, Bahar Bahai Choat. A Guru is like a potter and a disciple is like a pitcher. Just as a potter while supporting the pitcher from inside, gives strokes on its outer side so as to give it the desired shape, a Satguru also while giving support of true love from inside, has sometimes to rebuke his disciples so as to rid them of the evils and vices that can prove harmful to them. Sabb Dharti Kagad Karun, Lekhni Sabb Banraye. Saat Samudar Ki Masi Karun, Guru Gun Likha Na Jaye. Jehi Khojat Brahma Thakey, Sur Nar Muni Aru Dev. Kahain Kabir Sun Sadhva, Karu Satguru Ki Sev. The truth that even the gods, Rishi-Munies, tridev and the like couldn’t realise can be realised by simply serving the Satguru from the core of heart. What a great thing has Sahibji said. It is clear from the words of Sahibji that none can know the truth without the grace of Satguru. Ram Krishan Se Kau Bara, Tinbhi To Guru Keen. Teen Lok Ke Nayika, Guru Aage Adheen. Who can be as great as Lord Ram and Lord Krishan? Though they were the masters of 3 lokas, yet they felt the need to seek the shelter of Satgurus. If such is the case with the great incarnations, what can be the fate of ordinary human beings without a Satguru? So any kind of worship without the blessings of a Satguru can’t help us in freeing ourselves from the bondage of Kal Niranjan. Guru Ka Darshan Keejiye, Din Mein Keyi Keyi Bar Asuya Ka Meh Jiyun, Bahut Karey Upkar. 58 SAHIB BANDGI Sahibji has attached great importance to the holy Darshan of a Satguru. He says that one should do so as many times as possible even in a single day. Keyi Bar Na Hoyi Sakey, Doye Vakat Ker Leyi. Satguru Darshan Ke Kiye, Kal Daga Na Deyi. Doye Vaqat Na Ho Sakey, Din Mein Karai Ik Bar. Satguru Darshan Ke Kiye, Utre Bhavjal Par. Ek Din Na Kari Sakey, Dooje Din Kari Lehi. Satguru Darshan Ke Kiye, Pavey Uttam Dehi. Doojey Din Na Kari Sakai, Chauthey Din Ker Jaye. Satguru Darshan Ke Kiye, Moksh Mukti Phal Paye. Sahibji says that we should try to have the holy Darshan (vision) of Satguru at the earliest. We shouldn’t make any delay in doing so. There is some secret behind it. If we don’t take food for 3 days, we would feel some weakness. However, if we take food on the fourth day, we can recover our lost strength to some extent because it is the food that gives us energy. Likewise, any unnecessary delay in having the holy Darshan of Satguru gives opportunity to the Munn to grow stronger at the cost of soul. There is a constant need to provide the needed spiritual energy to the soul and the same can be obtained from the Satguru alone. Chauthey Din Nahin Ker Sakey, Bar Bar Karu Jaye. Yamein Vilamb Na Keejiye, Kahain Kabir Samujhaye. Bar Bar Na Kari Sakai, Pakshe Pakshe Karey Soye. Kahein Kabir Ta Dass Ka, JaNaam Saphal Hi Hoye. Pakshe Pakshe Na Kari Sakey, Mas-Mas Karu Jaye. Ya Mein Deyr Na Liye, Kahein Kabir Samujhaye. Mas-Mas Na Kari Sakey, Chhathey Mas Albatt. Yamein Dheel Na Keejiye, Kahein Kabir Avigatt. Chhathey Mas Na Kari Sakey, Baras Dina Kari Lehi. Kahein Kabir So Sant Jann, Yamhin Chunauti Dehi. AMRIT VANI 59 Sahibji says that the devotees who fail to have the holy Darshan of their Satguru even after fourth day, can do so, if possibe, once a month or once in six months or even once a year. However, if some unlucky fellow can’t do so even once a year, there is no alternative for him. Such a fellow can’t hope to cross the ocean of births and deaths. Mata Pita Sut Istri, Bandhu Katumb Ko Jan. Guru Darshan Ko Jabb Chaley, Ye Atkavein Aan. Inki Atka Na Rahey, Guru Darshan Ko Jaye. Kahein Kabir So Sant Jun, Moksh Mukti Phal Paye. While going for the Darshan of a Satguru, one often meets some obstacles. Parents, brothers, wife and other family members can create obstacles in one way or the other. But the devotees, who inspite of such obstacles, proceed on their way to have the holy Darshan, deserve salvation in the real sense. Tirath Nahaye Ek Phal, Sadhu Miley Phal Char. Satguru Miley Anek Phal, Kahein Kabir Vichar. Yeh Tann Vish Ki Belri, Guru Amrit Ki Khan. Sees Diye Jo Guru Miley, To Bhi Sasta Jan. Guru Sammukh Jaye Ke, Sahai Kasauti Dukh. Kahein Kabir Ta Dukh Per, Varon Kotik Sukh. Sahibji says that a disciple should sacrifice even crores of comforts over the discomfort, if any, he feels in the company of his Guru. Satguru Deen Deyal Hai, Daya Kari Mohin Aye. Koti Janaam Ka Panth Tha, Pal Mein Diya Pahunchaye. Sahibji says that his Satguru is a very kind hearted and noble soul because he has given him (Sahib) shelter. The path of God realisation was a very difficult one. It wasn’t easy to attain it even after crores of births. But it is 60 SAHIB BANDGI really very kind of Satguru that he has enabled me to attain the same within a moment. Guru Ke Sumiran Matar Se, Vinshat Vighan Anant. Ta Te Sarva Rambh Mein, Dheyavat Hain Sabb Sant. Simply meditating on a Guru helps the devotees rid themselves of their problems. That is why every devotee meditates on his Satguru. Devi Deval Jagat Mein, Kotik Poojey Koye. Satguru Ki Pooja Kiye, Sabki Pooja Hoye. A devotee can’t achieve any progress in the line of spiritualism even if he worships crores of gods and the goddesses. However, if he leaves aside the worship of all and worships his Satguru alone, he needn’t worship anyother deity. Hari Kripa Jo Hoye To, Nahin Hoye To Nahin. Kahein Kabir Guru Kripa Bin, Sakal Budhi Bah Jahin. Sahibji says that it is good if a devotee gets the blessings of God, but even if he fails to get the same, there is nothing to worry about. All that a devotee needs is the blessing and grace of his Satguru. Without this blessing, no target can be achieved. Guru Siri Te Utre, Shabad Bimukha Hoye. Ta Ko Kal Ghasiti Hai, Rakhi Sakey Nahin Koye. He who doesn’t follow the instructions of the Satguru, slips down the ladder that can take him to the house of Lord. Kal drags such a person to the hell. Gurumukh Guru Chitvat Rahey,Jaise Manihin Bhujung. Kahein Kabir Bisrai Nahin, Yeh Gurumukh Ko Ung. A true devotee looks at the photograph of his Satguru in the same manner a snake looks at its money(Gem). The snake in possession of money, puts it out while licking dew drops. But while doing so, he continues to keep its attention to its money. It doesn’t turn its attention AMRIT VANI 61 even for a while. Likewise, a true devotee keeps his Surti (attention) towards his Satguru at all the times. Guru Aagya Maney Nahin, Chalai Atpati Chal. Lok Ved Donon Gaye, Aye Sir Per Kal. The devotees, who disobey their Satguru and try to have their way, remain ignorant in the material as well as in the spiritual field. The Kal remains hovering over their heads all the times. Guru Agya Lai Aavhi, Guru Agya Lai Jaye. Kahein Kabir So Sant Jan, Bahu Vidhi Amrit Paye. Sahibji says that he who acts according to the instructions of his Satguru, drinks nectar in a variety of ways. Also, he is considered as a Sant. Guru Sahib To Ek Hain, Dooja Sabb Aakar. Apa Tajj Ke Hari Bhajey, Tabb Pavey Deedar. Infact, a Satguru and Sahibji are the two faces of the same coin. There is only the difference of form. If a devotee remains absorbed in his Satguru with true devotion, he can surely realise param thattva. This is possible only if he is ego free. Dhanya Maat Pita Dhanya Hain, Dhanya Suhad Anurakt. Dhanya Gram Vah Janiye, Jahan Janmein Guru Bhakat. Sahibji says that a place becomes sacred where a Guru Bhakat (worshipper of Satguru) is born. All the people there also become blessed because a single Guru Bhakat can help many others cross the ocean of births and deaths. Guru Paras Ko Antro, Janat Hain Sabb Sant. Woh Loha Kanchan Karey, Yeh Kari Le Mahant. All the Sants know the distinction between a Guru and a paras stone. Paras stone with its mere touch can change iron into gold while a Guru can change his disciple into a Sant like himself. Guru Ko Sir Per Rakhiye, Chaliye Agya Mahin. 62 SAHIB BANDGI Kahein Kabir Ta Dass Ko, Teen Lok Bhaye Nahin. He who holds the Satguru in highest esteem and acts as per his instructions has nothing to fear from in all the 3 lokas. Guru Bin Geyan Na Upjai, Guru Bin Milai Na Moksh. Guru Bin Lakhai Na Satya Ko, Guru Bin Mitai Na Dosh. Neither can a devotee attain knowledge nor can he know the truth without a Guru. Moreover, he can’t attain salvation without him (Guru). Guru Murti Gati Chanderma, Sewak Nain Chakor. Aath Pahar Nirkhat Rahey, Guru Murti Ki Aur. A devotee should look at the photograph of his Satguru in a manner a chakor looks at the moon. A chakor has great love for moon. That is why it continues to look at it constantly. With every change in the position of moon, it changes the direction of its eyes accordingly. This is because it feels that if it doesn’t do so, it will lose the sight of moon. What a beautiful example of true love does it present? Sahibji says that the devotees should also have such a true love and devotion to their Satguru and should keep their Surti at him at all the times while performing the activities of life. Guru Sharnagat Chhari Ke, Karey Bharosa Aur. Sukh Sampati Ki Kah Chali, Nahin Narak Mein Thor. He who shows lack of faith in his true Satguru and seeks the shleter of some other Seyanas (Posing to be expert in giving relief from the ill effects of evil spirits), fails to enjoy not only the material comforts but the comforts of spiritual world as well. He can’t find a place in hell even. Guru Murti Aage Khari, Dutiya Bheid Kachhu Nahin. Unhin Koon ParNaam Kari, Sakal Timir Miti Jahin. AMRIT VANI 63 Sahibji says that we shouldn’t make any distinction between a real Satguru and Param Purush. We should offer salutation to him just as we do to God. This will help us in removing the darkness of our ignorance. Pandit Pari Guni Pachi Muye,Guru Bina Miley Na Gyan. Gyan Bina Nahin Mukti Hai, Sant Shabad Parman. The intellectuals even after making deep study of secred books fail to attain any real knowledge of soul and without attaining the real knowledge of the soul one can’t hope to attain salvation. The only expert who can help us attain the spiritual knowledge can be none ohter but a real Satguru. Suniye Santo Sadhu Mili, Kah-hin Kabir Bhujaye. Jehi Vidhi Guru Soun Preeti Hai, Keejai Soyi Upaye. Sahibji tells all the Sadhus and holy persons to adopt such means as can help them increase their love and devotion for the Satguru. Satguru Mila Ju Sabb Miley, Na To Mila Na Koye. Maat Pita Sut Bandhva, Ye To Ghar Ghar Hoye. He who finds a real Satguru can be considered to have achieved every thing. This is because every one has parents and other family members including nears and dears. But it is the lucky ones alone who have the blessings of a true Satguru. Satguru Mila Ju Janiye, Geyan Ujala Hoye. Bhram Ka Bhanda Tori Kari, Rahai Nirala Hoye. When after seeking the shelter of a Guru, a devotee experiences some light of learning, he should understand without any shadow of doubt that he has sought the shelter of a real Satguru. All doubt lurking will be cleared and he will feel himself as somewhat different from others. Kete Pari Guni Pachi Muye, Yog Yajya Tapp Laye. Bin Satguru Pavai Nahin, Kotin Karey Upaye. 64 SAHIB BANDGI Many pandits performed yogas, yajyas, worships and other rites and rituals but none could realise Satya Purush. However hard a jiva may try, he can’t realise Satya Purush without seeking the shelter of a Satguru. Chandan Jaisa Satguru Hai, Sarap Yatha Sansar. Vakey Ung Lapta Rahey, Munn Mein Nahin Vikar. Satguru Khojo Sant, Jeev Kaj Ko Chah-hu. Meto Bhav Ko Unk, Avagavan Nivarhu. O Sants! Seek the shelter of some Satguru for your spiritual enlightenment. This will help you to cross the ocean of births and deaths. Guru Ko Manush Jante, Te Nar Kahiye Andh. Hoye Dukhi Sansar Mein, Aage Jum Ka Phand. Those who take Satguru as a human being are blind even inspite of having eyes. Such jivas suffer not only during their lifetime, but after their death even. Guru Mahima Gavat Sada, Munn Rakhe Ati Moad. So Bhav Phir Aavai Nahin, Baithe Prabhu Ki Goad. Those who at all times remain absorbed in praise of their Satguru, never return to this world of Kal.They, infact, merge into their Sahib. Guru Narayan Roop Hai, Guru Geyan Ko Ghat. Satguru Bachan Pratap Soun, Munn Ke Mitey Uchat. A Satguru is not an ordinary human being. Param Purush Himself descends on the earth in the form of Satguru to liberate the devotees. A Guru is a treasure house of knowledge. His holy sermons destroy the vices of the devotees. Kumti Keech Chela Bhara, Guru Geyan Jal Hoye. Janaam Janaam Ka Morcha, Pal Mein Darey Dhoye. A disciple is covered with the dirt of ignorance. A Real Satguru with his spiritual knowledge washes this dirt of ages together within moments. Tann Munn Ta Ko Deejiye, Ja Ko Vishya Nahin. AMRIT VANI 65 Aapa Tabb Hi Dari Ke, Rakhai Sahib Mahin. Sahibji says that a devotee should offer complete surrender of body and Munn before his Satguru. Only then the Satguru will connect him with Sahib. Aham Agin Nishi Din Jarai, Guru So Chahe Maan. Ta Ko Yam Niyota Diya, Hoyi Hamar Mahman. Those who remain in their ego and expect praise from the Guru are unlucky as well as unwise. The Yamraj loses no time in calling them to him. So we should never expect a Satguru to shower praises on us. Instead, we should always expect a Satguru to point out our mistakes so that we may be able to make the needed corrections. Complete surrender before a Satguru implies saying good bye to the material desires. Munnhin Diya Nij Sabb Diya, Munn Ke Sung Sharir. Abb Deve Ko Keya Raha, Yun Kathi Kah-hin Kabir. Satguru Aisa Keejiye, Lobh Moh Bhram Nahin. Dariya So Neyara Rahey, Disey Dariya Mahin. Seek the shelter of a Satguru who even while living in this material world is free from greed, attachment, kam (lust) and the like. Guru Mila Tabb Janiye, Mitai Moh Tunn Taap. Harash Shok Vyape Nahin, Tabb Guru Aape Aap. If after seeking the shelter of a Satguru, a devotee feels that he has been able to free himself from the grip of lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego, he should take it for granted that he has found a true Satguru. In such a case, he himself will become like his Guru. Balihari Guru Aap No, Ghari Ghari Sau Bar. Manush Se Devta Kiya, Karat Na Lagi Bar. Tann Munn Diya To Bhal Kiya, Shir Ka Jasi Bhar. Jo Kabhu Kahai Main Diya, Bahut Sahey Shir Mar. Sahibji says that a devotee who offers complete surrender before his Satguru, should be considered as a 66 SAHIB BANDGI wise and lucky fellow as he makes his burden light. If he boasts of having given something to his Satguru, he will reap nothing but sorrows and sufferings. Satguru Humson Rijhi Ke, Kahyo Ek Prasang. Barsa Badal Prem Ka, Bhiji Geya Sabb Ang. Sahibji says that his Satguru was pleased with him and he said such sweet and charming words as filled his (Sahibji’s) heart with limitless love and made his entire body wet with the tears that flowed down his eyes. Only a devotee who has showed such a love for his Satguru, can understand the depth of this true love. Satguru Mara Tani Ke, Shabad Surange Baan. Mera Mara Phir Jiye, Hath Gahun Na Kaman. Sahibji says that a Satguru destroys the vices like lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego with the arrow of Naam. Such vices prove powerless before a devotee who is blessed with the holy Naam. Munn also seems to lose its girp over such a devotee. Sahibji again says that if the Munn again gains power and begins to entice jiva towards evil deeds, he won’t handle the bow of truth in his hands. Infact, the munn of a devotee who is blessed with the true Naam, becomes almost dead and the dovotee himself crosses the limits of Munn and doesn’t do such evil deeds as he did earlier under its infuence. Such a jiva attains liberation. Satguru Mor Surma, Kasker Mara Baan. Naam Akela Rah Geya, Paya Padd Nirvan. III AMRIT VANI 67 15. People without The Shelter Of A Satguru Garbh Yegeshwar Guru Bina, Laga Hari Ki Seb. Kahain Kabir Vaikunth Te, Pheir Diya Shukdev. Shukdevji was a very enlightened soul. He had received the spiritual knowledge while he was in the womb of his mother. All his worship without the aid of a living Guru being proved to be of no avail. When he went to heaven, he was sent back by Vishnu who told him that he (Shukdev) couldn’t enter there as he hadn’t sought the shelter of some Guru. It is said that Shukdev was determined not to come out of the womb of his mother. The wife of Vyasdevji was in great trouble. She prayed to the gods. Then all the gods requested Shukdevji to come out of the womb or else his mother would die. Nevertheless, the Muni knew that the world was a place of sorrows and sufferings, so he refused to come out. It was only after great persuations that he agreed to (be born) come out. When such an enlightened soul couldn’t find any place in heaven, what will be the fate of normal beings who don’t seek the shelter of any Guru. Chousath Deeva Joyeke, Choudah Chanda Mahin. Tehi Ghar Kiska Chandna, Jihi Ghar Satguru Nahin. Even if one has the knowledge of 64 Kalaan (any field using the skills or techniques of art) and is expert in 14 phases of moon , he will be said to be wandering in darkness if he has not sought the shelter of some Guru. Kanchan Meru Araphin, Arpain Kanak Bhandar. Kahain Kabir Guru Bemukhi, Kabhun Na Pavai Par. A devotee, even after giving away in charity gold equal in weight to Sumero Mountain, can’t cross the ocean of births and deaths if he disobeys his satguru. Guru Bin Mala Pheirte, Guru Bin Dete Daan. 68 SAHIB BANDGI Guru Bin Daan Haram Hai, Puchho Ved Puran. All the Dharam Shastras bear witness to the fact that all our counting of beads and performing of acts of charity will go waste if we don’t seek the shelter of a Satguru. Jo Nigura Sumiran Karai, Din Mein Sou Sou Bar. Nagar Nayika Sat Karey, Jarai Koun Ki Lar. If some vaishya (prostitute) desires to perform the rite of sati, with whom can she do so? The whole of the city is her husband. Sahibji says that the worship of a person who hasn’t sought the shelter of any Satguru meets the same fate as that of vaishya. Bhak Marey Keya Roiye, Jo Apne Ghar Jaye. Roiye Sakat Bapure, Haton Haat Bikaye. Aakhon Dekha Ghee Bhala, Na Mukh Mela Teil. Sadhu Soun Jhagra Bhala, Na Sakat Soun Mail. Sahibji says that it is better to have simply the Darshan of Ghee but the oil taken in mouth is not good. Likewise, it is better to have a quarrel with sadhus and Sants but it is not good to have friendship with persons who have not taken the shelter of any Satguru. Sakat Sung Na Baithiye, Karan Kubair Sman. Ta Ke Sung Na Chaliye, Pari Hai Narak Nidan. Don’t have company with persons who have not sought the shelter of any Satguru even if they have ammassed wealth equal to that of Karan or Kubair. This is because their company will ultimately take you to hell. Sakat Sukar Kookra, Teenon Ki Gati Ek. Koti Jatan Parmodiye, Tou Na Chhore Taik. Sahibji says that a person without the shelter of any Guru, a pig and a dog have the same nature. The will keep sticking to their view even if you try to make them understand with all possible techniques. Kabir Guru Ki Bhakti Bin, Raja Rasabh Hoye. AMRIT VANI 69 Mati Ladai Kumhar Ki, Ghas Na Darai Koye. Sahibji says that without seeking the shelter of a Guru and without worshipping him, even the king will be reborn as a donkey and will be seen carrying the earth of some potter. None will offer him grass even. Kabir Guru Ki Bhakti Bin, Nari Kukri Hoye. Gali Gali Bhonkat Phirai, Took Na Darai Koyi. Sahibji says that without the worship of a Satguru a women will be reborn as a bitch and will go on barking from one street to the other. None will offer her even a loaf of bread. Sadhun Ki Jhupri Bhali, Nahin Sakat Ka Ganv. Chandan Ki Tukri Bhali, Na Babool Banrav. The hut of a sadhu is far better than the village of a person who has not sought the shelter of any Satguru. A single piece of sandal is better than a forest of babool (Acacia). Sakat Sun Ka Jevra, Bhijai Sou Kar Raye. Do Achhar Guru Bahira, Bandha Jampur Jaye. A person who has sought the shelter of any Guru is like a rope of jute that goes on growing harder and harder after becoming wet with water (form of ego). Such a person on account of being ignorant of the two words ‘Gu’ + ‘Roo’ will go straight to Yamlok (Abode of yama). Sakat Kaha Na Kahi Chalai, Sunha Kaha Na Khaye. Jo Kouva Math Hagi Karai, To Math Ko Kaha Nashaye. A Nigura can speak any thing he likes. A dog can eat anything it finds. A temple doesn’t get spoiled if some crow throws its waste product (stool) in a temple. In the same manner, the enlightened souls don’t feel any discomforts when some Nigura speaks some unkind words against them. Sota Sadhu Jagaiyen, Karai Naam Ka Jap. 70 SAHIB BANDGI Ye Tenon Sotey Bhaley, Sakat Singh Aru Sanp. Sahibji says that one should awaken a sadhu if he is asleep so that he may recite the holy Naam of Ram. On the other hand, it is better if all the three—a nigura, a lion, and a snake remain asleep. This is because they are sure to cause harm to others if they get awakened. Hari Sa Hira Chhadi Ke, Karoun Aan Ki Aasa. Te Nar Yampur Jahinge, Sat Bhashai Rai Dassa. III 16. Holy Naam From Satguru Jabhi Naam Hirde Bhaya, Bhaya Pap Ka Nash. Jaise Chingi Aag Ki, Pari Purani Ghas. Just as a single cinder can burn to ashes a heap of dry grass, the holy recitation of Naam can burn to ashes all the accumulated sins and evils of a disciple thereby making him pure and clean. Tantar Mantar Sabb Jhuth Hai, Matt Bharmo Koye. Sar Shabad Janey Bina, Kaga Hans Na Hoye. Sahibji tries to make us understand that TantarMantar etc. are all a bundle of lies. They can’t enable us to have spiritual realisation. A crow (like Man) can never become a hansa unless it seeks the shelter of some Satguru and gets blessed with the holy Naam. Kal Phirai Sir Ooprai, Jivhi Najar Na Aye. Kahein Kabir Guru Shabad Gahi, Yam Se Jeev Bachaye. Kal in the form of Mind is hovering over the heads of all but jiva due to ignorance is not in a position to see it. Sahibji says that a jiva can escape from Kal only if he is blessed with the holy Naam. Satguru Naam Chhadi Kai, Karai Aur Ki Aas. Veshya Tera Poot Jyun, Kahai Kaun Ko Bap. AMRIT VANI 71 Ujval Pahirey Kapra, Pan Supari Khaye. Ek Guru Ke Naam Binu, Bandha Yampur Jaye. Khoji Huwa Shavad Ka, Dhanya Sant Jan Soye. Kahein Kabir Gahi Shabad Ko, Kabhun Na Jaye Bigoye. He who instead of recitation of holy Naam, looks at some one other for helps, is like a vaishya’s son who does not know his father. A person may wear clean and shining clothes and may take Betel and nut, but without the shelter of some true Satguru, he is bound to go to Yampuri. He, who wanders in search of the holy Naam, is revered as a blessed Sant. Sahibji says that he, who remains absorbed in the holy Naam, can never do any wrong act. Yahi Barayi Shabad Ki, Jaise Chumbak Bhaye. Bina Shabad Nahin Oobrai, Keta Karai Upaye. The importance and virtue of the holy Naam lies in its power to free the devotees from the girp of worldly mayajal and to attract them to itself in a manner a magnet attracts iron to it. Sahibji says that all the attempts to cross the ocean of births and deaths are bound to fail unless one gets blessed with the holy Naam. Koti Naam Sansar Mein, Tinte Mukti Na Hoye. Mool Naam Jo Gupat Hain, Janey Birla Koye. There are crores of Naams associated with the worship of Gods. Many of them are associated with Vishnoji, Shivji and other gods and the goddesses. Sahibji says that none of these holy Naams can help devotees achieve salvation. The true and real Naam is a hidden one and is known to some rare Sants only. All the ‘Naams’ that fall within the limit of 52 letters are not hidden. One can know of these from the study of holy shastras. However, the true and real Naam is far beyond the limit of 72 SAHIB BANDGI 52 letters. It is not the subject of speech. It is, infact, a living force. Chinta To Guru Naam Ki, Aur Na Chitvai Dass. Jo Kuchh Chitvai Naam Binu, Soyi Kal Ki Phans. Keep your Surti at all times towards your Guru. Apart from the holy Naam, all the places our mind wanders about fall in the mayajal of Kal Purush. Shabad Paye Surti Rakh-hi, So Pahunchai Durbar. Kahein Kabir Tahan Dekhiye, Baitha Purush Hamar. Naam Japat Kusthi Bhala, Chuni Chuni Girey Jo Cham. Kanchan Teri Deh, Naam Bina Kehi Kam. A devotee suffering from Lycodermia is better than a person who even inspite of a healthy and shining body has not been blessed with a holy Naam. Naam Ratan Dhan Paye Ke,Ganthon Bandh Na Khol. Nahin Patanhin Par Bhi, Nahin Gahak Nahin Moal. After being blessed with the holy ‘Naam’, keep it safely with you. Unless you find some parkhi (Assayer), don’t revile. This is because a person other than an assayer won’t be able to realise its worth. Satguru Naam Sumirte, Ubre Patit Anek. Kahein Kabir Na Chhariye, Guru Naam Ki Taik. Reciting the holy Naam, many sinners and evil doers even managed to cross the ocean of births and deaths. That is why Sahib ji advises the devotees never to part with the support of Naam. Naam Japat Daridri Bhala, Tooti Ghar Ki Chhan. Kanchan Mandir Jari De, Jahan Na Satguru Naam. A poor fellow who recites the holy Naam is praiseworthy even though the roof of his house be in a shattered condition. On the other hand, a house where AMRIT VANI 73 there is no recitation of holy Naam, is deserves to be burnt to ashes. Jaisa Maya Munn Ramai, Taise, Naam Ramaye. Tara Mandal Bheid Ke, Tabb Amrapur Jaye. Just as mind remains absorbed at all the times in Maya, keep your Surti at all the times in the holy Naam. Only this can help you to cross all the obstacles of this Brahmand and reach Amarlok. Neend Nishani Mout Ki, Uth Kabira Jaag. Aur Rasayan Chhadi Ke, Naam Rasayan Lag. Ek Naam Ko Jani Ker, Dooja Dei Bahaye. Tirath Vrat Jap Tap Nahin, Satguru Charan Samaye. After being blessed with the holy Naam, leave aside other modes of worship including observing of fasts, visiting holy places etc. Which are superfluous and unnecessary. Only keeping the Surti on the holy fect of your Satguru will enable you to attain every thing. There is no need to wander about. III 17. Worship Bhakti Beej Paltai Nahin, Jo Jug Jaye Anant. Oonch Neech Ghar Abatrai, Hoye Sant Ka Sant. The seed of true Bhakti is deep rooted. It can’t be destroyed even after the elapse of crores of yugas. If even after hard worship a devotee fails to achieve salvation and has to be reborn in a low family, the worship performed by him can never go waste. Bhakti Sanehi Mukti Ki, Sant Charey Sabb Dhaye. Jin Jin Munn Aslas Kiya, Janam Janam Pachhitaye. Kabir Guru Ki Bhakti Karu, Tajj Vishya Rus Chounj. Bar Bar Nahin Payiye, Manush Janaam Ki Mauj. 74 SAHIB BANDGI Kami Krodhi Lalchi, In Se Bhakti Na Hoye. Bhakti Karai Koyi Soorma, Jati Varan Kul Khoye. Jabb Lug Bhakti Skam Kai, Tabb Lug Nishfal Saiv. Kahain Kabir Woh Kiyun Milai, Nishkami Nijdev. As long as Bhakti is performed with some selfish motive to attain material objects, it can’t serve any real purpose and is useless for all practical purposes. One can attain spiritual realisation only if one worships in a selfless manner. Bhakti Bhav Bhadoun Nadi, Sabai Chali Gahraye. Sarita Soyi Sarahiye, Jeth Mas Thahraye. In the month of Bhadoun (August) all the streams can be seen overflowing. However, the stream that remains filled with water even in the month of May is really praiseworthy. Likewise, it hardly matters if someone gets filled with the feeling of dovotion for some time. The real devotee is he who remains uneffected by problems even and remains calm both in comfort as well as in discomfort. Guru Bhakti Ati Kathin Hai, Jyun Khande Ki Dhar. Bina Sanch Pahunche Nahin, Maha Kathin Vyavahar. The worship of a Guru is like walking on the edge of a sword. Only a true devotee can do so. Dekha Dekhi Bhakti Ka, Kabhun Na Chadsi Rung. Jyun Vipti Ke Padat Hi, Kechuli Tajat Bhujang. One can’t bathe in the colour of Sathya Bhakti simply by imitating others. Such a Bhakti fades away very soon. It is just like the case of a serpant that throws away its outer skin on feeling discomfort. Ujla Kapra Pahan Ker, Pan Supari Khaye. Kabir Guru Ki Bhakti Bin, Bandha Jampur Jaye. Mala Tilak To Bhesh Hai, Ram Bhakti Kuchh Aur. Kahein Kabir Jin Pahiriye, Panchon Rakhai Thor. AMRIT VANI 75 One can’t be considered as a devotee simply by wearing a necklace or by applying Tilak on the forehead. Bhakti is entairly a different thing. Sahibji says that he who takes to true Bhakti, gains control over the vices like lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego. A complete control over these vices is, in fact, a touchstone of true devotion Sathya Bhakti. Bhakti Duheli Guroon Ki, Nahin Kayar Ka Kam. Sees Utarey Haath Soun, Tahi Milai Nij Dham. It is not within the power of cowards to enter the field of Bhakti. For this, one has oneself to cut off one’s head and offer it to the Satguru. That is to say one has to completely shun one’s ego to realise one’s trueself. Bhakti Geind Chaugan Ki, Bhavai Koyi Lai Jaye. Kahain Kabir Kuchh Bheid Nahin, Kahan Runk Kahan Raye. A devotee (worhipper) is like a ball in the field. Any person—rich or poor— can take it. Bhakti Dwara Sankara, Rayi Dashvein Bhaye. Munn To Maingal Hoye Raha, Kaise Aavey Jaye. Sahibji says that the door of Bhakti is a very narrow one. It is narrower to the extent of 10th part of a grain of Rayi. On the other hand, the minds of worldly people are filled with ego and as such they can’t pass through this narrow path of Bhakti. Jabb Lug Nata Jati Ka, Tabb Lug Bhakti Na Hoye. Nata Torey Guru Bhajai, Bhakat Kahavey Soye. He who is proud of his high caste, can’t prove to be a good worshiper. He will have to crush this caste related ego if he wants to follow the path of Bhakti. Doing so, he will be considered as a true devotee. Bhav Bina Nahin Bhakti Jug, Bhakti Bina Nahin Bhav. Bhakti Bhav Ik Roop Hai, Dou Ik Subhav. 76 SAHIB BANDGI Love and Bhakti are one and the same thing. Bhakti can’t take birth without the feeling of love and love can’t be firm and stable without worship. The nature of both is the same. In fact, love is devotion. Aur Karam Sabb Karam Hain, Bhakti Karam Nihkaram. Kahain Kabir Pukari Ke, Bhakti Karo Taji Bhram. Sahibji says that the worship has the power to destroy the whole network of Karma while all other Karmas are the network of Kal wherein all the jivas are entangled. Therefore, man should free himself from all misunderstandings and should worship his Satguru. Bhakti Bhakti Sabb Koyi Kahe, Bhakti Na Janey Bheid. Kahain Kabir Pukari Ke, Bhakti Karo Jaji Bharam. Every one talks of Bhakti, but in reality none knows the secret of performing it. Man will know the art of true and complete worship only when he seeks the shelter of true Satguru. Therefore, it is only by the grace of Satguru that man will know the real path of worship. Kabir Guru Ki Bhakti Bin, Dhik Jeevan Sansar. Dhuvan Ka Sa Dhorhara, Binsat Lagey Na Bar. The human life is purposeless without Satguru Bhakti. Without worhisp, every kind of material wealth is like a smoke and will take no time in getting destroyed. Totey Mein Bhakti Karai, Ta Ka Naam Sapoot. Maya Dhari Muskhrain, Katey Gaye Aouit. A true devotee is he who worships even in his hard times. A great many persons who were proud of their maya, were perished. Jati Baran Kul Khoye Ke, Bhakti Karai Chit Laye. Kahain Kabir Satguru Milai, Avagam Nashaye. Sahibji says that we should perform worship only after rising above the considerations of caste or creed. AMRIT VANI 77 This is the only way that can enable us cross the ocean of births and deaths. III 18. True Love Prem Peyala Jo Piye, Shish Dakshina Dey. Lobhi Shish Na De Sakey, Naam Prem Ka Ley. He who drinks the cup of love can give his head as well in return. Here head means ego. It is this ego that is responsible for all the worldly relations, fame, humilation and the like. But a greedy person can only talk of love but can’t renounce the world in return for the love of the beloved one. He finds it difficult to leave his ego aside. Lagi Lagan Chhute Nahin, Jibh Chounch Jari Jaye. Meetha Kaha Angar Mein, Jahi Chakor Chabaye. He who dovelops true love for someone, never thinks of deserting him even in the face of heavy odds. A chakor loves the moon and taking the cinder itself as moon puts it into the mouth. As a result, it feels a burning pain in its beak and tongue. But out of deep and blind love it continues to repeat the process of throwing the cinder out and putting it again in the mouth. The cinder doesn’t taste sweet but out of love it gladly bears its burning effect. Sumiran Se Munn Layiye, Jaise Nad Kurang. Kahain Kabir Bisrey Nahin, Pran Tajey Tehi Sung. The true love should be like that of a deer for the tune of flute. It loses its life even for the sake of its love. The deer has love for the flute. The hunters fix two bamboos in the ground in order to catch it. Then they fix nails on these and keep a third bamboo loosely on it. After this they hide somewhere and begin to play on the flute. 78 SAHIB BANDGI The tune of the flute sounds pleasant to the deer and it desends down the hill to enjoy it. The special feature in the deer is that it can’t sit. It has no joints in its legs and that is why it can’t stand if it somehow manages to sit. It enjoys its sleep in a standing posture by taking some support against some rock etc. The flute charms it, that it places its legs on the 3rd bamboo to enjoy the sweet tune in a better way. The lose banboo falls down and alongwith it the deer also falls. Then the hunters stop playing on the flute and come to the deer. They tear its belly, take out the musk and sell the meat Adhik Sanehi Machhri, Dooja Alap Sneh. Pran Tajey Pal Bisre, Mer Ker Tajey Na Neh. The fish is the greatest lover in the world. The love of all other living beings fades before its love. Even a moment’s separation from water makes it lose its life. Not only this much, it doesn’t leave the company of water even after death. Chin Hi Chadey Chin Hi Utrey, So To Prem Na Hoye. Ja Ghat Prem Pinjre Basey, Prem Kahave Soye. Prem Chhipaya Na Chhipey, Ja Ghat Pargat Hoye. Jo Pai Mukh Boley Nahin, Nain Dait Hain Roye. Pothi Parh Parh Jug Muva, Pandit Bhaya Na Koye. Dhayi Aakher Prem Ka, Parai So Pandit Hoye. Sahibji says that none could attain the knowledge of soul even after making the study of Holy Scriptures. Infact, study of holy books can’t prove helpful in spiritual realisation. It is better to leave aside these books and attains the true knowledge of prem (love) formed by the combination of 2½ letters. He who develops love for his Satguru can easily attain the spiritual knowldge and bocome a true pandit. Yeh To Ghar Hai Prem Ka, Khala Ka Ghar Nahin. Shish Utare Bhuin Dharey, Tabb Paithe Ghar Mahin. AMRIT VANI 79 Shish Utarey Bhuin Dharey, Ooper Rakhai Panv. Kahein Kabir Dharam Dass Se, Aisa Hoye To Aav. Love and worship are one and the same thing. The love itself is worship. That is why Sahibji tells Dharam Dassji that if a devotee has to do worship and has to love his Satguru, he will have to cut off his head and will have to destroy it with his feet. Shish means ego. That is to say he will have to become egofree if he wants to develop love for his Satguru. Prem Panvri Pahri Ke, Dheeraj Kajjal Dey. Sheel Sindoor Bhraye Kai, Tabb Piya Ka Sukh Ley. A devotee (in the guise of lady) can derive the comfort and joy of meeting his husband (in the guise of Satguru) only when he goes with Payal (in the form of love) in feet, Kajal (in the form of patience) in eyes and vermilion in Maang ( The line between the divisions of a women’s hair). Along with love one needs patience as well. Moreover, a pleasant and cool nature helps in attracting and fascinating the lover. Preeti Bahut Sansar Mein, Nana Vidhi Ki Soye. Uttam Preeti So Janiye, Satguru Se Jo Hoye. There are many varieties of love prevalent in the world. But the true love is only that which is devoloped for a Satguru. All other kinds of love are infested with one or other kind of vice. Moreover, they are short lived and die sooner or later. This is because none can accompany any other fellow till the very last. But the love for a Satguru is the best of all. This relation is a very deep one. It is not limited to this world alone. It is, rather, ever lasting and extends to the 4th loka that is far away from the limits of 3 lokas of Kal. Nainon Ki Kari Kothri, Putli Palang Bichhaye. Palkon Ki Chik Dari Kai, Piy Ko Liya Rijaye. 80 SAHIB BANDGI Make your eyes like a room and spread pupils like a bedcot. Then make a veil of eyelids by closing the eyes. Only thus you will be able to fascinate your loved one (Satguru). Premi Dohundat Main Phiron, Premi Milai Na Koye. Premi Soun Premi Milai, Vish Se Amrit Hoye. Jabb Mein Tha Tabb Guru Nahin, Abb Guru Hai Mein Nahin. Prem Gali Ati Sankri, Ta Mein Do Na Smahi. As long as there is ego in man, he can’t expect the Guru to be with him. But as soon as the ego disappears, he finds Guru and Guru alone wherever he looks. Sahibji says that the path of love is a very narrow one. There is no place for two. Therefore, Satguru can’t remain with us as long as we are filled with ego. Piya Chahe Prem Rus, Rakha Chahai Maan. Ik Miyan Dui Khadag, Dekha Suna Na Kan. Kabir Hansna Doori Kari, Rovan So Ker Chit. Bin Roya Kiyun Payiye, Prem Piyare Mitt. Hansi Hansi Kantt Na Payiya, Jin Paya Tin Roye. Hansi Khela Hari Miley, To Nahin Suhagan Hoye. Aapa Metai Piv Miley, Piv Mein Raha Smaye. Akath Kahani Prem Ki, Kachhun Kahi Na Jaye. Naina Under Aav Tu, Nain Jhanpi Tohi Leoun. Na Main Dekhon Aur Ko, Na Tohi Dekhan Deoun. Jihi Ghat Preeti Na Prem Rus, Puni Rasna Nahin Nam. Te Nar Is Sansar Mein, Upji Gaye Bekam. The life of such persons who has no love in their heart for Sahibji and don’t recite the holy Naam, is totally purposeless. They have to go empty handed from this world. Kabir Prem Na Chashiya, Chashi Na Liya Saav. Soone Ghar Ka Pahuna, Jyun Aya Tiyun Jaav. AMRIT VANI 81 He who tastes the love of Sahib and doesn’t get drowned in its pleasures and charm, is just like a guest of an empty house. He comes to the world empty handed and returns likewise. Ja Ghat Prem Na Sanchre, So Ghat Jaan Masan. Jaise Khal Luhar Ki, Sans Lait Bin Pran. Sahibji says that the body of person with no love in heart is like a cremation ground. The life of such persons is like the Dhounkni (an instrument used for pumping air) of an iron smith that breaths even without pran (life giving air). Ja Ka Chitt Anurag Hai, Geyan Milay Nar Soye. Bin Anurag Na Pavyi, Koti Karai Jo Koye. Only a person whose heart is filled with love for his Satguru can attain spiritual knowledge. None can attain this knowledge without the needed love. All our attempts in this regard are bound to fail. Prem Bhakti Mein Rachi Rahain, Moksh Mukti Phal Paye. Shabad Manhi Jabb Mili Rahai, Nahin Aavai Nahin Jaye. Sahibji says that a devotee should remain absorbed in Bhakti with love and devotion if he wants to reap the fruit in the form of Bhakti. He, who performs Bhakti with true love, keeping his Surti fixed in the holy ‘Naam’, becomes free from the cycle of births and deaths. Prem Bhav Ek Chahiye, Bhesh Anek Banaye. Bhavai Ghar Mein Vas Ker, Bhavai Bun Mein Jaye. A person should have a feeling of love in his heart. He is then free to perform Bhakti while living at home or in forests after leaving behind all the worldly objects and relations. Premi Dhundat Main Phiron, Premi Milai Na Koye. Premi So Premi Milai, Vish Se Amrit Hoye. Sahibji says that he is in search of some person whose heart is filled with true love. However, it is very 82 SAHIB BANDGI hard to find one who can love his Satguru. If a lover finds another lover, the two together have the power to cause a flow of nectar possible even in a body full of vices and poisonous material. Sahaj Sanehi Bhaut Hain, Sukh Mein Miley Anek. Bipti Parey Dukh Bantiye, So Lakhan Mein Ek. One can find many lovers in the world who remain in the company of each other in the time of prosperity. However, there may be one in lakhs, who can share sorrows in the time of adversity. Prem Prem Sabb Koyi Kahai, Prem Na Chinhai Koye. Ja Marg Sahib Milai, Prem Kahavai Soye. Every one talks of true love but none knows what the true love is! The true love is only that which can enable a devotee realise Sahib (Param Purush). Sabai Rasayan Hum Kiya, Prem Sman Na Koye. Ranchak Tann Mein Sanchrai, Sabb Tann Kanchan Hoye. Sahibji says that he has tasted all the juices that are found in the world, but none of these can match the charm and sweetness of love. Even the presence of a small amount of this juice is sufficient to make the whole body pure. Bhakti Bhakti Sabb Koyi Kahe, Bhakti Na Janey Bheid. Kahain Kabir Pukari Ke, Bhakti Karo Jaji Bharam. Every one talks of Bhakti, but in reality none knows the secret of performing it. Man can know the art of true & complete worship only when he seeks the shelter of real Satguru. So it is only by the grace of Satguru that man will know the real path of worship. AMRIT VANI 83 19. Gems Of Wisdom Sahibji reminds jiva of the days when he was hanging upside down in the womb of the mother. With head downward and feet upward, it suffered a lot. Then it prayed to God to take it out of the womb and assured Him that it would worship Him. However, after coming out, it got so much entangled in the worldly affairs that it totally forgot its assurance given. A jiva can realise the importance of salvation only if he doesn’t forget the pains it suffered in the womb of its mother. The pains and sufferings at this place are far greater that even the troubles and pains one can experience in Sapat Kumbi hells (Seven pitchers filled with faeces, urine and other filthy matrials presenting a hell like sight. Only the mere remembrance of these sufferings can make a jiva turn to the worship of Sahib right from the very begining. The pearls are there in the ocean, but only he who can dive and reach its depth can succeed in getting them. The others sitting on the back can’t hope to obtain them. Only such devotees as offer complete surrender before a Satguru and don’t fear death even can be able to realise the truth. Bhari Kahun To Bahu Darun, Halka Kahun To Jhuth. Main Keya Janun Sahib Ko, Naina Kachhu Na Deeth. Deetha Hai To Kas Kahun, Kahun To Ko Patiyaye. Jaisa Hai Taisa Raho, Harshi Harshi Gun Gaye. There is fear in calling Sahib as heavy one but at the same time it is a sheer lie to call Him as light one. Our intellect can’t help us know anything about Him as He can never be seen with our Physical eyes. Even if one succeeds in seeing Him with his inner eyes, he can’t find the suitable words to describe Him. If somehow one attempts to describe Him, none is going to believe him. 84 SAHIB BANDGI Therefore, it is better to let Him remain as He is. Only with peace and calmness at heart one should continue to sing in praise of Him. Jo Dekhai so Kahey Nahin, Kahai To Dekhai Nahin. Sunai So Samjhavai Nahin, Rasna Drig Sharvan Kahin. He who is lucky enough to have a vision of Sahib can’t give a description of Him. Therefore, he keeps silent. Any other person who tries to give description of Him should be considered as one who has not seen Him at all. The tongue, eyes and nose can’t understand that which the ears hear. Jo Pakrai So Chalai Nahi, Chalai So Pakrai Nahin. Kahain Kabir Ya Sakhi Kau, Arth Samujh Munn Mahin. Kabir Ek Na Janiya, Bahu Janey Keya Hoye. Ek Hitey Sabb Hoat Hai, Sabb Te Ek Na Hoye. Pati Vrata Kahi Ek Tu, Aur Na Dooja Koye. Ashat Pahar Nirkhat Rahai, Soyi Suhagini Hoye. Pati Vrata Ko Sukh Ghana, Ja Kai Pati Hai Ek. Munn Maili Vyabhicharini, Ta Ke Khasam Anek. A wife wholly devoted to her husband enjoys peace and pleasures because she knows that she has only one husband on whom she has to shower all her love. On the other hand, a characterless woman has a filthy mind. She has more than one husband and as such fails to enjoy the real pleasures and peace of mind. Ek Naam Ko Jani Kai, Dooja Deyi Bahaye. Teerath Vratt Jap Tapp Nahin, Atam Tattav Smaye. Kabira Seep Samuder Ki, Khara Jal Nahin Ley. Pani Peevai Swati Ka, Shoba Sagar Dey. Munn Murid Sansar Hai, Guru Murid Koyi Ek. Jo Manai Guru Vachan Ko, Taka Mata Agadh. Kabir Ka Ghar Sikhar Per, Tahan Silhali Gail. Panv Na Tikai Pipili Ka, Pandit Ladey Bail. AMRIT VANI 85 The house of Kabir is at a high peak. That place is much slippery. Even an ant can’t stay its feet there. In such circumstances how can the pandits reach there with their load of bookish knowledge. Kami Ka Guru Kamini, Lobhi Ka Guru Daam. Kabir Ka Guru Sant Hai, Santon Ka Guru Naam. Per Nari Paini Chhuri, Mati Koyi Lavo Ung. Ravan Ke Dus Sir Gaye, Per Nari Ke Sung. Sabb Ghat Mera Sayiyan, Khali Ghat Na Koye. Balihari Va Ghat Ki, Ja Ghat Parghat Hoye. Aag Lagi Akash Mein, Jhar Jhar Girey Ungar. Sant Na Hotey Jagat Mein, Jal Marta Sansar. Marte Marte Jug Muva, Maran Na Jana Koye. Aisi Marni Na Mara, Bahuri Na Marna Hoye. All the human beings are meeting their death one by one, but none has learnt to meet a real death. Only he who dies a real death can save himself from the cycle of repeated birth and death. Coming out of the 11th dwara, a devotee enters a spiritual world where he meets death even while living. This is the state that one can attain through Surti- meditation. Ja Marney Se Jug Darey, Mere Munn Anand. Kab Marihon Kab Payiyun, Puran Parmanand. Jeevan Main Marna Bhala, Jo Mari Janai Koye. Marna Pahle Jo Marai, Ajar Amar So Hoye. Kabir Kasauti Naam Ki, Khota Tika Na Koye. Naam Kasauti So Tikai, Jo Jeevat Mratak Hoye. Kabir Munn Mratak Bhaya, Durbal Bhaya Sharir. Aage Pichhe Hari Phirai, Kahain Kabir Kabir. Munn Ko Mratak Dekhi Ke, Mati Manain Vishwas. Sadhu Ajhun Bhay Karai, Jab Lug Pinjar Swans. Sahibji says that a devotee should never believe mind even if it appears to be lifeless. 86 SAHIB BANDGI A sage should remian alert as long as he is alive. Mind never dies though it is possible to bring it under control. If this mind meets death, the whole of the world will also perish. Jahan Skok Vyapai Nahin, Chal Hansa Us Desh. Kahain Kabir Gurgam Gaho, Chhari Sakal Bhram Bhes. Atam Anubhav Geyan Ki, Jo Koyi Puchhe Baat. So Gunga Gur Khaye Ke , Kahey Kaun Mukh Swad. Kabir Loha Ek Hai, Garney Main Hai Pheir. Ta Hi Ka Bakhtar Bana, Ta Hi Ka Shamsher. Sahib Ke Durbar Mein, Kami Kahu Ki Nahin. Banda Mauj Na Pavhi, Chook Chakri Mahin. There are some faults in the service of a disciple to his Satguru and it is this that prevents him from enjoying life. Otherwise, there is no dearth of anything in the court of a Satguru. Guru Bichara Keya Karai, Jo Shish Mahin Chook. Bhavai Jyun Parmodhiye, Bans Bajayi Phoonk. Hirdey Geyan Na Upjai, Munn Partit Na Hoye. Ta Ko Satguru Keya Karey, Ghan Ghas Kulhar Na Hoye. A disciple who has no love for his Guru and acts as per the dictates of mind will certainly find it difficult to digest the spiritual knowledge received from his Satguru. Such a disciple can’t hope to achieve salvation as his Satguru feels helpless to save him from the situation he has created due to his own folly. Gu Andhiyari Janiye, Ru Kahiye Parkash. Miti Agyane Geyan De, Guru Naam Hai Tas. ‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means light. A Guru is he who removes the inner darkness of ignorance of his disciples and fills them with light of learning. Kabira Lahri Samuder Ki, Moti Bikhre Aye. AMRIT VANI 87 Bagula Parakh Na Janyi, Hansa Chuni Chuni Khaye. A Sant is like an ocean of learning. He scatters many pearls of wisdom through his Satsangs. While the hypocrites like the heron fail to understand these pearls of wisdon, the true devotees and sages make a good use of them. Vastu Kahin Dhundhe Kahin, Kihin Vidhi Avai Hath. Kahai Kabir Tabb Payiye, Bhedi Leeje Sath. The thing is lying at some particular place and we are trying to make a search of it at some other place. In such a situation, how can we hope to find it? God is persent inside us but out of ignorance, we are trying to find Him outside. The selfish and hypocrites have got man entagled in the outside world and have thus made it impossible for him to relaise Him. Sahibji says that in order to realise Him man will have to take the support of some expert in the field. Mangan Maran Sman Hai, Tohi Deyi Main Seekh. Kahain Kabir Samjhaye Ke, Mati Koyi Mangai Bheekh. Sahaj Milai So Doodh Hai, Mangi Liya So Pani. Kahain Kabir Vah Rakat Hai, Ya Mein Ainchatani. That which one receives easily, is fine like milk and that which one receives by begging can only serve the purpose of quenching one’s thirst like water; but that which one snatches away from others is like blood that needs to be thrown away. Geyani Se Geyani Miley, Hovey Geyan Ki Baat. Murakh Se Murakh Miley, Khavein Do Do Laat. Sewak Sewa Mein Rahey, Sewak Kahiye Soye. Kahain Kabir Sewa Bina, Sewak Kabhi Na Hoye. Dwarey Dhani Ke Parey Raho, Dhakka Dhani Ka Khaye. Kabhu To Dhani Nivaji Hai, Jo Dar Chhari Na Jaye. 88 SAHIB BANDGI Sahibji says that a disciple should continue to stay at the holy feet of his Satguru . He shouldn’t leave that place even if the Guru pushes him out. A disciple who stays there with firm determination is sure to receive the shower of his Guru’s blessings. Yeh Jeev Aya Door Te, Jana Hai Bahu Door. Bich Ke Basey Basi Gaya, Kal Raha Sir Poor. Jo Toko Kante Buvai, Ta Hi Buvai Tu Phool. Tako Phool Ke Phool Hain, Vako Hai Tirshool. Kabir Aap Thagayiye, Aur Na Thagiye Koye. Aap Thage Sukh Upjai, Aur Thage Dukh Hoye. Avat Gari Ek Hai, Ultat Hoye Anek. Kahain Kabir Nahin Ultiye, Rahey Ek Ki Ek. Aisi Vani Boliye, Munn Ka Apa Khoye. Auran Ko Sheetal Karey, Aapau Sheetal Hoye. Jaisa Bhojan Khayiye, Taisa Hi Munn Hoye. Jaisa Pani Peejiye, Taisi Bani Soye. Bahte Ko Mat Bahan Do, Ker Gahi Henchhu Thor. Kahvo Sunyo Manai Nahin, Shabad Kaho Dui Aur. If you find someone drowning in water, lend your helping hand to take him out. That is to say you should try to pull such ignorant persons out before he is drowned in the unreal and short lived pleasures of the world. If he doesn’t pay any heed to you, speak to him some more words of spiritual knowledge. Bandey Tu Ker Bandgi, Tab Pavai Deedar. Ausar Manush JaNaam Ka, Bahuri Na Barambar. Jo Jal Badai Nav Mein, Ghar Mein Badai Dam. Dono Hath Uleechiye, Yehi Seyano Kam. Aji Hath Matt Ker Bavre, Hath Se Baat Na Hoye. Jyun Jyun Bhijai Kamri, Tyun Tyun Bhari Hoye. Shabad Braber Dhan Nahin, Jo Koye Janai Bole. Hira To Damon Miley, Shabadhin Mole Na Toal. Kaga Kako Dhan Harai, Koyal Kako Deit. AMRIT VANI 89 Meetha Shabad Sunaye Ke, Jug Apno Kari Lait. Sukh Ke Sangi Swarthi, Dukh Mein Rahte Door. Kahein Kabir Parmarthi, Dukh Sukh Sada Hazoor. Dil Ka Marhami Koyi Na Milya, Jo Milya Yo Garji. Kahein Kabir Akash Phata Hai, Kiyunker Seeve Darji. Sarb Soney Ki Sundri, Avai Vas Suvas. Jo Janani Hai Aapni, Tou Na Baithe Pass. If a lady has a beautiful golden complexion and charming fragrance is emanating from her, Sahibji cautions that one shouldn’t sit beside her even if she is one’s mother. Per Nari Ka Rachna, Jyun Lahsun Ki Khan. Koney Baithe Khaiye, Pargat Hoye Nidan. Nari Purush Ki Istri, Purush Nari Ka Poot. Yahi Gyan Vichar Ke, Chhari Chala Avdoot. Nari Nirkhi Na Dekhiye, Nirkhi Na Keejai Gour. Dekhat Hi To Vish Charai, Munn Avey Kachhu Aur. Chiyunti Chaval Le Chali, Bich Mein Mil Geyi Dal. Kahain Kabir Do Na Miley, Ek Le Dooji Dal. An ant was going with a grain of rice in mouth. On the way it found a grain of pulse. It wanted to take it as well but she was finding it hard to do so. Any attempt to take the other grain made the first one fall down. Sahibji says that one should try to take one thing at a time as it will never be possible to carry both at the same time. One the one hand there is the Satguru while on the other hand there is the world’s charm and attraction. It is not possible to take both of these together. One will have to select either of the two. He who desires to take the refuge of the true master will have to leave the charm of the world and vice versa. Sadhu Aisa Chahiye, Jaisa Soop Subhaye. Sar Sar Ko Gahi Rahey, Thotha Dehi Uraye. Marg Chalte Jo Girai, Ta Ko Nahin Dosh. 90 SAHIB BANDGI Kahein Kabir Baitha Rahai, Ta Sir Kardai Kos. Shram Hi Te Sabb Hoat Hai, Jo Munn Rakhai Dheer. Shram Te Khodat Koop Jyun, Thal Mein Pragtai Neer. Hard work makes everything easy and possible. The only thing that one needs is patience. Even a hard soil can produce water if with patience and hard work one starts digging a well. Kal Khara Sir Ooper, Tein Jagu Birane Meet. Ja Ka Ghar Hai Gail Mein, So Kas Sovey Nishichant. Deh Dharey Ka Dand Hain, Bhugtat Hain Sabb Koye. Gyani Bhugte Gyan Kari, Murakh Bhugte Roye. Mansahari Manva, Pratyaksh Rachhas Jan. Ta Ki Sangat Matt Karo, Hoye Bhakti Mein Hani. Anda Machhli Khat Hain, Aur Sura Se Hait. Te Nar Narkai Jayenge, Mata Pita Samait. Til Bhar Machhli Khaye Ke, Koti Gou De Dan. Kashi Karvat Lai Marai, To Bhi Narak Nidan. One who takes a life of fish, he can’t achieve salvation even if he gives crores of cows in charity and in the end dies truning his body towards Kashi to rid himself of the sin he has commited. Such a fellow will have to go to hell. Gala Kati Kalma Parai, Kiya Kahai Halal. Sahib Lekha Mangsi, Tabhin Kaun Haval. Some cut the throarts of others with chanting of Kalma and say that they have done the right thing. But, what will be the fate of such persons when Sahibji will look into the account of deeds performed by them . Kahta Hoon Kahi Jaat Hoon, Kaha Ju Maan Hamar. Ja Ka Gala Tum Kati Ho, So Phir Kati Tumhar. Augan Kahun Sharb Ka, Gyanvant Suni Ley. Manush Se Pashuva Karai, Dravya Ganthi Ka Dey. Dhirey Dhirey Re Mana, Dhirey Sabb Kuchh Hoye. Mali Seenche Sau Ghara, Ritu Aye Phal Hoye. AMRIT VANI 91 Sahibji says that with patience alone one can perform all the jobs successfully. Just see how a Gardner waters the plants at regular intervals but the fruits appear at proper time only. Kabir Dheeraj Ke Dharey, Hathi Munn Bhar Khaye. Took Ek Ke Karney, Svan Gharai Ghar Jaye. It is patience alone that enables an elephant to have his fill at his own place while a dog has to move from house to house for the same. Fikar Sabb Ko Kha Geyi, Fikar Hi Sabb Ka Peer. Fikar Ka Faka Karai, Ta Ka Naam Kabir. Kshama Baran Ko Chahiye, Chhotan Ko Utpat. Kaha Vishno Ka Ghati Gyo, Jo Bharigu Mari Laat. Elders should have they virtue of forgiveness. It is but natural for the youngsters to make mistakes. Brighu Rishi had kicked Lord Krishna but still he didn’t speak any harsh words to him. This act of Lord Krishna makes him great in the eyes of all. Bharigu Rishi worshipped hard and attained many powers. It is out of ego that he kicked Vishnu in his chest. Vishnu was sleeping. On getting awake, he began to press gently the feet of the Rishi and asked him if his tender feet had recieved any injury after striking with his hard body. . Sanch Braber Tapp Nahin, Jhuth Braber Pap. Ja Ke Hridey Sanch Hai, Ta Ke Hirdey Aap. Kabir Jhuth Na Boliye, Jab Lug Par Basaye. Na Janey Keya Hoyega, Pal Ke Chauthey Bhaye. Jahan Daya Vahan Dharam Hai, Jahan Lobh Tahan Pap. Jahan Krodh Tahan Kal Hai, Jahan Kshyama Tahan Aap. Bura Jo Khojan Main Chala, Bura Na Miliya Koye. Jo Dil Khoja Aapna, Mujhsa Bura Na Koye. Tinka Kabhun Na Nindiye, Jo Payan Tal Hoye. Kabhun Ur Aankhon Parey, Peer Ghaneri Hoye. 92 SAHIB BANDGI Sahibji says that we shouldn’t denounce even the smallest thing like a straw that is lying below our feet. It is possible that the same straw may fall into our eye by the force of air and may cause much trouble and pain. Dukh Mein Sumiran Sabb Karein, Sukh Mein Karai Na Koye. Jo Sukh Mein Sumiran Karai, Dukh Kahey Ko Hoye. Sukh Mein Sumiran Na Kiya, Dukh Mein Kiya Yad. Kahein Kabir Ta Dass Ki, Kaun Sunai Fariyad. Panch Pahar Dhandhe Gya, Teen Pahr Gya So. Ek Pahar Guru Naam Bin, Mukti Kaise Hoye. Neend Nishani Maut Ki, Uth Kabira Jag. Aur Rasayan Chhari Ke, Naam Rasayan Lag. Raat Gnwayi Soye Ke, Divas Gnwaya Khaye. Hira JaNaam Anmol Tha, Kauri Badle Jaye. Durlabh Manush JaNaam Hai, Miley Na Barambar. Taruber Jyun Patti Jharey, Bahuri Na Lagey Dar. Human birth alone is gifted with the power to attain salvation and is not so easy to obtain. A leaf that once falls to the ground from a tree can never be fixed at its original place. Keya Bharosa Deh Ka, Vins Jaat Chhin Mahin. Sans Sans Sumiran Karo, Aur Yatan Kachhu Nahin. Aya Tha Kis Kam Ko, Soya Chadar Taan. Soorat Samhal Ei Gafal, Apna Aapa Pahchan. Pati Vrata Maili Bhali, Kali Kuchal Kuroop. Pati Vrata Ke Roop Per, Varo Koti Saroop. Jyun Til Mahin Teil Hai, Jyun Chakmak Mein Aag. Tera Sayin Tujh Mein Hai, Jag Sakey To Jag. Ja Karan Jug Dhundhiya, So To Ghat Ki Mahin. Parda Diya Bhram Ka, Ta Te Soojhe Nahin. Dil Ka Marhami Koyi Na Milya, Jo Milya Vo Garji. Kahein Kabir Akash Phata Hai, Kyunkar Seeye Darji. AMRIT VANI 93 Sumrin Surat Jagai Ker, Mukh Se Kachhu Na Bol. Bahar Ka Pat Band Ker, Under Ka Pat Khol. Without uttering useless words, meditate on God with full concentration. Leave aside outward dancing and chanting of hymns, worship God from the core of your heart. Devi Deval Jagat Mein, Kotik Pooje Koye. Satguru Ki Pooja Kiye, Sabb Ki Pooja Hoye. Sukhiya Sub Sansar Hai, Khavai Aru Sovai. Dukhiya Dass Kabir Hai, Jage Aru Rovai. Kabir wants to take human beings entangled in the short lived pleasures of Maya to the realm of Sahib Amarlok where they can find permanent pleasures. He says that on one hand the whole of the world is enjoying worldly pleasures and seems to have no link with Sahib, while on the other hand he is feeling uneasy on account of his separation from Him. He awakes during nights and weeps. Jihi Ghar Sadhu Na Poojiye, Guru Ki Sewa Nahin. Te Ghar Marghat Sarkhe, Bhoot Basey Tin Mahin. Ja Ke Munn Vishwas Hai, Sada Guru Tehi Sung. Koti Kal Jhakjhorhi, Tou Na Hoye Chit Bhang. Kabira Nir Bhaya Naam Japu, Jab Lagi Devi Baati. Tel Ghate Baati Bujhe, Sovega Din Rati. Kabira Soota Keya Karai, Jagan Ki Kari Chounp. Durjan Kumbh Kumbar Ka, Ekai Dhakka Drar. 94 SAHIB BANDGI Nau Dwarey Sansar Sabb, Dasvein Yogi Sadh. Ekadash Khirki Bani, Janat Sant Sujan. Guru Satya Naam Satya Ho, Aap Satya Jo Hoye. Teen Satya Jab Ek Hoon, Vish Se Amrit Hoye. Chet Sawere Bavre, Phir Peechhe Pachhtaye. To Ko Jana Door Hai, Kahain Kabir Jagaye. Jeev Na Maro Bapura, Sub Kai Ekai Pran. Hatya Kabhun Na Chhooti Hai, Kotik Suno Puran. Bahu Bandhan Se Bandhiya, Ek Vichara Jeev. Jeev Vichara Keya Karey, Jo Na Chhudave Peev. This jiva is entangled in the net of devils like lust, enger, and the like. It is not in its power to free itself of these enemies on its own. It can liberate itself only if it, by the grace of God, is able to seek the shelter of some Satguru. Surti Phansi Sansar Mein, Tate Pari Gayo Dhoor. Surti Bandh Sathir Karo, Aathon Pahar Hajoor. Alakh Purush Ki Arsi, Santan Ki Hi Dehi. Lakha Jo Chahe Alakh Ko, Inhin Mein Lakh Lehi. Bin Pavan Ki Rah Hai, Bin Basti Ka Desh. Bina Pind Ka Purush Hai, Kahain Kabir Sandesh. Kabir Khah Huya Tou Kiya Bheyia, Jouri Lagey Ang. Harijan Aisa Chahiye, Jiou Pani Sarbang. Kabir Pani Huwa To Kya Bheyia, Sara Tata Hoyi. Harijan Aisa Chahiye, Jaisa Hari Hi Hoyi. AMRIT VANI 95 Sahibjis says that a worshipper of God should shun all his ego and should live like a stone on the way. Only such devotee can realise God. He further says that only living like a stone on the way is not of so much importance. Such a sotne can cause trouble to those who stumble against it. A worshipper of God should be like the dust on earth. Again, he says that becoming like the dust doesn’t carry much weight as the blowing wind can throw it on the clothes of passers-by thereby making their clothes dirty. So, he says that a worshipper of God should be pure like water. But even the water continues to change its nature. Sometimes it becomes cold while at other times it becomes hot. Finally, he says that the worhipper of God should be like God Himself. Mata Mooye Ek Phal , Pita Mooye Phal Char. Bhayi Mooye Hani Hai, Kahein Kabir Vichar. With the death of mother (in the form of attachment) one attains one fruit (unattachment) and with death of father (in the form of ego) one attains four fruits (Dharam, Arth, Kam, Moksh). But the death of brother (in the form of Bhav (emotion)), causes much harm. Jug Mein Charon Ram Hain, Teen Ram Vyavahar. Chautha Ram Nij Sar Hai, Ta Ka Karo Vichar. Ek Ram Dashrath Ghar Dolai,Ek Ram Ghat Ghat Mein Bolai. Ek Ram Ka Sakal Pasara,Ek Ram Tirbhuban Te Neyara. Akar Dashrath Ghar Dolai,Nirakar Ghat Ghat Mein Bolai. Bindu Ram Ka Sakal Pasara,Niralumb Subhin Tein Neyara. Kabira Khara Bajar Mein, Liye Luhata Hath. Jo Ghar Phoonkey Aapna, Chaley Hamare Sath. 96 SAHIB BANDGI Sahibji says that he is standing with a Luhata in the form of Naam. He who is prepared to get the evil forces in the form of lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego destroyed, can accompany him. Deen Garibi Bandgi, Sadhun Saun Adheen. Ta Ke Sung Main Yun Rahoon, Jyun Pani Sung Meen. Sahibji says that those who remain under the holy shelter of Satguru like humble creatures, I remain with them like a fish in water. That is to say just as a fish has love for water and doesn’t leave its company, I also love such creatures in the same manner and don’t leave them. Neech Neech Sab Ter Gaye, Sant Charan Lau Leen. Jati Ke Abhiman Mein, Boorey Sakal Kuleen. Sahibji says that even ordinary persons who sought the shelter of Satgurus, succeeded in crossing the ocean of births and deaths. On the other hand, those who were proud of their high caste and didn’t seek the shelter of any Satguru, were drowned in the ocean of births and deaths. Kabir Sab Te Hum Bure, Humse Bhal Sab Koye. Jin Aisa Kari Bujhiya, Meet Hamara Hoye. Sahibji says that those who consider themselves as bad in comparison to all others, are fit to become our companions. Darshan Ko To Sadhu Hain, Sumiran Ko Guru Naam. Tarne Ko Adhinta, Dooban Ko Abhiman. Sahibji says that if at all one has the desire to seek the holy Darhsan (sight) of someone, one should satisfy his desire by having the Darshan of some sage. If one wants to worship some one, one should worship his Satguru and if one wants to cross the ocean of births and deaths, one should spend one’s life as a humble being. But if one desires to drown oneself in the world, one should AMRIT VANI 97 live in one’s ego. All that Sahibji wants to impress upon us is that we should lead our lives like humble creatures. Swarth Ka Sabko Saga, Sara Hi Jug Jan. Bin Swarth Sewa Karai, So Ner Chatur Sujan. All the people of the world are selfish. It is the selfish interests alone that make others appear as our dears and nears. But he who without any selfish interest shows respect as a dear one, is wise indeed. Nij Swarth Ke Karnai, Sewa Karai Sansar. Bin Swarth Bhakti Karai, So Bhavai Kartar. The whole of the world serves others or worships God with one or the other motive in mind. But those who worship in a selfless manner are really the loved ones of Sahib. Sukh Ke Sangi Swarthi, Dukh Mein Rahte Door. Kahain Kabir Parmarthi, Dukh Sukh Sada Hazoor. Purush Rachan Te Nari Hai, Nari Rachan Te Purush. Purshe Purshe Jo Racha, Te Birla Sansar. Sahibji says that first of all Param Purush produced Adi Shakti who produced Brahma, Vishno and Mahesh. This world has been created out of the union of a male and a female but the creation of a male out of a male is really very strange. It is really some rare ones who can do so. The creation of a Bhringa and a Satguru is the strangest of all. It is just like the act of producing a male out of a male. Bhringa is single. It has no partner. But still its family line continues. It catches an insect, transmits its word into it and makes it like itlesf. Normally, an insect doesn’t possess the power to fly but on hearing the sound of a Bhringa, the insect also becomes like it. Likewise, the creation of a Satguru is also very charming and strange. While blessing the disciple with holy Naam, the Guru, 98 SAHIB BANDGI while keeping his hand on his head, whispers his sacred word into his ears and makes him like himself. Kahta Hoon Kahi Jat Hoon, Deta Hoon Hela. Guru Ki Karni Guru Janey, Chela Ki Chela. Raja Ki Chauri Karai, Rahai Runk Ki Aut. Kahein Kabir Kiyun Ubrai, Kal Kathin Ki Chaut. Sahibji says that it is not possible for a man to save himself by taking the shelter of some poor man after committing a theft in the house of some king. Likewise, it will not be possible for a disciple, who takes to the worship of other gods and goddesses defying the guide lines of his Satguru, to cross the ocean of birhts and deaths. He won’t be able to escape from the sword of Kal and will have to be devoured by it. Guru Hai Mera Gagan Mein Chela Hai Chit Mahin. Shabad Surti Mein Leen Hai, Bichhurat Kabhoon Nahin. Sahibji says that his Shabad Guru (Religious teacher with divine word) resides in the sky while his disciple in the guise of mind remains inside. He says that he keeps his attention fixed at him all the time and never get separated from him. Pahupan Keri Bas Jyun, Vyapi Rahva Sab Thanhi. Bahir Kabhoon Na Payiye, Pavai Santon Mahin. Just as the fragrance of a flower that spreads outside, emanates from its interior where it is present, God also can’t be realised outside because He can be seen in the interior of the Sants alone. Boond Smani Samuder Mein, Yeh Janai Sab Koye. Samuder Smana Boond Mein, Boojhai Birla Koye. The merging of a drop in sea is understandable but it is only some rare person who can understand the merging of a sea into a drop. Likewise, everyone can AMRIT VANI 99 understand the merging of soul into God but only some rare person can understand the merging of God into soul. Aya Tha Kis Kam Ko, Too Soya Chadar Taan. Surti Sanbhal Ai Gafal, Apna Aap Pahchan. O Man!You seem to have forgotten the very purpose of your birth as a human being. Why have you covered your body with a sheet of Maya and gone to sleep? Be awake and try to realise your soul. Jati Na Poochho Sadhu Ki, Poochhi Leejiye Gyan. Moal Karo Talwar Ka, Para Rahan Do Meyan. There is no use of enquiring about the caste to which a sage belongs. It is wise to gain some spiritual knowledge from him. We shouldn’t fix the value of a sword simply by looking at its cover. We should, rather, examine the sword and then fix its price. A sage is the representative of God. If there is some particular caste attached with God, the same should be the case with a sage as well. But since God doesn’t belong to any caste, it is not wise to ask the sage the caste he belongs to. Sadhu Sidh Bahu Antra, Sadhu Mata Perchand. Sidh Ju Tarey Apko, Sadhu Tarey Nau Khand. There is a great difference between a sage and a siddha (a person with miraculous powers). The sage is much powerful than a Siddha. A siddha can only do good to himself alone while a sage has the power to do good to the mankind as a whole. Ja Sukh Ko Munivar Ratain, Sur Nar Karain Vilap. So Sukh Sahjai Payiye, Santon Sangti Aap. One can easily find comforts and such pleasures in the company of Sants, for which Sur, Nar, Muni etc. weep before Sahib. This is because Sahib descends on the earth in the guise of true Sant. 100 SAHIB BANDGI Sadhu Bhonra Jug Kali, Nishi Din Phirai Udas. Tuk-Tuk Tahan Vilambiya, Jahan Sheetal Shabad Nivas. This world is like an unblossomed flower where the Sant in the guise of a drone makes his trips. He stays for some time at such places only where the true devotees of Sahib reside. Bahta Pani Nirmla, Bandha Ganda Hoye. Sadhu Jan Ramta Bhala, Dag Na Lagai Koye. Water remains soft as long as it flows and it becomes infested with insects and becomes dirty when it stays at one place. Likewise, the Sants also remain free from vices and attachment as long as they remain moving from one place to the other. Bandha Pani Nirmla, Jo Took Gahira Hoye. Sadhu Jan Baitha Bhala, Jo Kuchh Sadhan Hoye. Even the staying (bounded) water can be soft if it is somewhat deep. Likewise, a Sant enlightened with spiritual knowledge is good even if he stays at one place. Kabir Mera Koyi Nahin, Hum Kahu Ke Nahin. Par Pahunchi Nav Jyun, Mili Kai Bichhuri Jahin. Sahibji says that neither he has any dear one nor he is dear one to any other. That is to say everyone in this world is alone. Just as all the passengers on a boat separate from each other on reaching the shore, everyone here as well will have to separate from the other when the boat of life meets its death. Sant Miley Sukh Upjai, Dushat Miley Dukh Hoye. Sewa Keejai Sant Ki, JaNaam Kartarath Hoye. Munn Maila Tunn Oujra, Bagula Kapti Ung. Tasoun To Kauva Bhala, Tann Munn Ek Hi Rung. The beauty of body is of no use if the mind is filthy and full of vices. It will be the case of a heron. A crow is AMRIT VANI 101 better in the sense that it looks the same on the inner as well as on the outer side. Jinko Sayin Rung Diya, Kabhun Na Hoye Kurang. Din-Din Bani Agri, Charai Swaya Rung. The colour of the disciples whom the Satguru colours like his ownself, never fades. On the contrary, it grows thicker with the passage of time. Kabir Sheetal Jal Nahi, Him Na Sheetal Hoye. Kabir Sheetal Sant Jan, Naam Sanehi Soye. Ved Thakey, Brahma Thakey, Thakey Shesh Mahesh. Gita Hoon Ki Gat Nahin, Sant Kiya Parves. Yeh Kalyug Ayo Abai, Sadhu Na Manai Koyi. Kami Krodhi Maskhara, Tinki Pooja Hoye. Sahibji describes the strange picture of this Kalyug. He says that the true and holy Sants are denounced while the cheat and hypocrites are being worshipped. No doubt, at persent the hypocrites—be they in the guise of beggars, receivers of donation or those posing to rid peple of the bad influence of evil spirits, are being worshipped in one form or the other. Sanchai Koyi Na pateejeyi, Jhuthai Jug Patiyaye. Gali-Gali Goras Phirai, Madira Baithey Bikaye. Human beings take the unreal and untrue things as real ones, but they don’t trust that which is actually true and real. A wine seller sits at his place and the people themselves go to him for taking wine, whereas a milk seller has to move from house to house to sell milk Jaki Gati Brahma Nahin Payo, Shiv Sankadik Harey. Ta Ki Gati Nar Kaise Payihau, Kahein Kabir Vicharey. Kabir Parna Door Ker, Pustak Dey Bahaye. Bavan Aksher Chhor Ke, Ni-Akshar Lau Laye. Kahna Tha So Kah Chaley, Abb Kachhu Kaha Na Jaye. Ek Raha Dooja Geya, Dariya Lahar Smaye. 102 SAHIB BANDGI Akshya Purush Ik Pairh Hai, Niranjan Baki Dar. Tri Deva Shakha Bhaye, Paat Bhaya Sansar. If we take Sahib as a tree, Niranjan is just like a stem which has further been divided into there sub branches—Brahma, Vishno and Mahesh. The rest of the world is like leaves. That is to say Niranjan is greater than Tridev while Sahib is greater than Nirnajan. Kahanta To Bahut Miley, Gahanta Mila Na Koye. So Kahanta Voh Jan De, Jo Nahin Gahanta Hoye. Sadhu Ganthi Na Bandyi, Udar Smata Ley. Aage Pichhey Hari Kharey, Jabb Mangey Tabb Dey. Sab Aye Is Ek Mein, Dal Paat Phal Phool. Kabira Pichhey Keya Raha, Gah Pakri Jab Mool. The branches, leaves, flowers etc. owe their existence to the root and as such fall in its category. So, if a person catches hold of root, he attains everything. Nothing is left behind in such a case. Satgurus are the representatives of Sahibji and so worship of Satgurus is equivalent to catching hold of the root. Other gods and the goddesses are like the branches, leaves, flowers etc. He who worships his Satguru needn’t worship any one else. Such a worship, infact, means the worship of the whole of the Brahmand. That is why the worship of a Satguru is considered as the best of all other modes of worship. Lamba Marg Door Ghar, Bikat Panth Bahu Bhar. Kahon Santo Kiyun Payiyai, Durlabh Guru Deedar. The path is a long one and the obstacles ar no less. Moreover, with the burden of evil deeds on the head, how can one hope to have the sight of some true and perfect Satguru. Aisa Koyi Na Milai, Ja So Kahoon Dukh Roye. Jason Kahiye Bhed Ki, So Phir Bairi Hoye. AMRIT VANI 103 Sahibji says that he finds none to whom he can tell his woes. He, whom he tries to explain the reason behind his woes, turns into his foe. The Sants hold that this world belongs to Kal Purush (Lord of death). Sants give the people of the world information about Amarlok. They are pained to see the sad plight of the jivas that are made to suffer the sorrows and pains inherent in the cycle of repeated births and deaths. However, the worldly people don’t understand this secret and turn against the holy Sants. Sadhu Bhukha Bhav Ka, Dhan Ka Bhukha Nahin. Dhan Ka Bhukha Jo Phirai, So To Sadhu Nahin. Bircha Kabhon Na Phal Bhakhai, Nadi Na Sanchai Neer. Parmarth Ke Karne, Sadhu Dhara Sharir. The trees don’t eat their own fruits and a stream doesn’t drink its own water. These serve others. Likewise, the holy Sants incarnate themselves for the service of humanity as a whole. III Naam Satya Guru Satya, Aap Satya Jo Hoye. Teen Satya Jab Ek Hon, Vish Se Amrit Hoye. Even nectar can be produced out of poison when all the three–Naam, Guru and the Jiva are real and true. Satguru, at the time of blessing a devotee, keeps his hand on his head and Transmits the hidden Naam into his Ears (Human Mind cannot comprehend that soundless sound), turns him into a Hansa (Awareness of Soul enhanced). 104 SAHIB BANDGI English version Of Some Vernacular terms 1.
