The Cheryl
The Cheryl is a method of using a perm foundation at
the crown to give height and volume, it’s only suited
to those who blow-dry and style their hair after every
wash. If you have very straight hair and leave your
hair to dry naturally, the perm will show at the
crown and will look curlier then the rest of the hair.
It’s crucial to have a firm perm foundation at the crown
of the hair in order to achieve maximum height and
shape with blow-drying or roller setting.
To achieve the ‘Cheryl’ look you will need the
following from www.pinup-perm.com:1 x Pin Up Clarifying Shampoo 250ml
1 x Pin Up End Curl
1 x Pack of Pin Up Perm Rods Small (Tighter Curl x 12)
1 x Pin Up Setting Lotion 100ml
1 x Tail Comb
1 x Plastic Bowl
You will also need:A Round Brush, Large Setting Rollers, Kitchen Towel,
Cling Film, Rubber Bands, Conditioner and Mousse.
Instructions
Step One – Preparation
Step Three – Winding
Wash the hair several times in the Clarifying
Shampoo and towel dry gently. Comb the hair fully
before commencing the perming treatment. You need
to comb the crown area (you intend to perm) back so
you can clearly see where it begins. Now pour 50% of
the Pin-Up End Curl Part One Waving Lotion into the
plastic bowl. Using the tail end of your comb take out
a small section of hair directly at the point the crown
section you have created begins. The section should
be no winder than the centre of your perm rod and no
deeper than 1cm.
Now take an end paper and fold it neatly over the
ends of the hair, ensuring the ends are smooth.
Next take your first rod and begin winding the hair
around it and heading downward to the root. Use
good tension as you want the hair securely wrap
around the rod. The rod should be wound down to
the root and secured with the rubber band.
Step Two – Pre-Dampening the Hair in
Waving Lotion
Proceed with the section directly behind the rod you
have just wound and repeat. You need a small ‘skull
cap’ formation of rods at the crown and should use
anywhere between eight to ten small rods to do this.
The degree of rods you use (and the wider your ‘skull
cap’ of rods is) depends on the degree of height and
volume you prefer.
Taking your sponge, gently absorb a little of the
Waving lotion. Now dampen your newly created
section with the sponge. Use your comb to smooth
the lotion through the hair. Ensure you keep the
section perfectly smooth as you do this.

Step Four – Applying the Waving Lotion
Step Eight – Neutralising
Once you have wound all your rods, you will need
some kitchen roll and cling film. Pour the remainder
of your Waving Lotion into your bowl and re-saturate
the sponge. Hold a sheet of kitchen roll behind the rod
(to catch any drips from falling onto the unwound hair)
and begin gently saturating each rod again. Replace
your kitchen roll if it becomes wet, but ensure any drips
are absorbed into this rather than the unwound hair.
After resting the hair for 10 to 15 minutes you can
now neutraliser the perm. Neutralising is the stage
which creates the ‘permanent’ effect in the hair and
returns it to its natural state. Apply the applicator pipe
to the neutraliser bottle and shake gently. Now begin
applying the foam to each of the rods to ensure each
one is fully covered, once covered leave for 5 minutes
to absorb.
Step Five – Processing
Once you have saturated all the rods and there is no
dripping. Wrap the rods securely with the cling film.
This will trap the heat (from your head) directly in the
processing sections and ensure the hair curls evenly.
Now develop the hair for 20 minutes and only 10
minutes if you have highlights or your hair is heavily
colour treated.
Step Six – Checking the Perm is process
Once the development time has elapsed, conduct a
test curl by unwrapping one of the rods slightly and
checking for a definite ‘s’ shape. When you are
satisfied the perm has taken, blot the rods thoroughly
with kitchen roll and proceed to rinsing.
Step Seven – Rinsing
At the rinsing stage you will need to remove all traces
of the Waving Lotion from the hair. To do this apply a
gentle (warm not hot) water flow from a shower over
each rod, patting the rods as you apply the water.
For ‘The Cheryl’ wind you should rinse the rods for
three minutes to ensure all traces of the waving lotion
have been removed. After rinsing, wrap the head in
a towel and ‘pat’ the rods to remove excess moisture.
Leave the hair wrapped in the towel for around 10 to
15 minutes to ‘rest’ the hair and to ensure any excess
moisture has been removed.
After 5 minutes begin gently removing the perm rods
you will now see the curl result. Once all rods are
removed apply some more neutraliser to the new
curls, paying particularly attention to the ends.
Leave to process for a further 5 minutes.
Step Nine – Finishing and Styling
After 5 minutes you can now rinse off the neutraliser
and thoroughly rinse the whole of your hair. You can
apply a little conditioner to the front and back areas
(which did not receive the perm) as the hair could be
a little matted due to the attention given to the crown.
Once you have rinsed for several minutes and lightly
conditioned, gently towel dry the hair and comb
thoroughly.
After a perm it is best not to place the hair (that has
been permed) under too much stress. So whilst you
can ‘round brush’ blow-dry the crown you would
achieve best results by applying a little setting lotion
or mousse and wet setting the whole head on large
‘setting’ rollers and either leaving to dry naturally or
sitting under a hood dryer.
Do not wash the hair for at least two days to allow the
permed area to ‘settle’. After your first wash, you can
dry the crown area with a round brush if you desire
and you will achieve the height and volume expected
and will find this lasts between washes.
