The Rev. Karin MacPhail to Become
Next Minister of Christ Church
The Rt. Rev. Shannon S. Johnston, Bishop of
Virginia, has appointed The Rev. Karin MacPhail
Priest-in-Charge of Cunningham Chapel Parish.
Karin will officially start as Priest-in-Charge the first
Sunday in September.
Karin MacPhail came to us a year ago as a
supply priest with no interest in pursuing a more
permanent position. A few months later, Karin
approached the vestry and expressed an interest in
being considered as Interim Rector. While Vestry
members were excited at the prospect of Karin being
named as Interim, we later approached Karin with
what we considered an even better opportunity, that
of being named as Priest-in-Charge.
In the Episcopal Church, the normal process is to
have an interim minister for a period of time, usually
around two years, while a search is being conducted
for a rector. While an Interim is not considered a
candidate for the position of Rector, a Priest-inCharge may be called by the Parish to become Rector
after a period of time. The Vestry unanimously
endorsed the idea of Karin becoming our Priest-inCharge because we truly believe Karin is the right
person to take this church forward, hopefully for
many, many years.
Karin will be working on a part-time basis; we
are confident that the schedule she has proposed will
meet the needs of this parish. The Vestry feels that
this is a mutually beneficial arrangement and a
wonderful opportunity for both Karin and our parish.
Her youngest child will start preschool in September
and we are offering Karin the flexibility to arrange
her schedule to accommodate her family‟s needs.

Attention All Christ Church Bakers
The third annual Country Fair will be upon us
before we know it. As in the past, the Baked Goods
tables have been very popular with young and old
alike. I ask for your help again this year with baked
goods of all sorts - cakes, pies, breads, brownies,
cookies, cupcakes (always loved by the children)…..
whatever your specialty!
Your baked offerings can be dropped off at the
church narthex on Friday afternoon, July 8. A box
will be labeled for your convenience. If transportation is a problem, let me know and I can arrange
for pick-up or you can bring your goods to the Bake
Sale tables before 9 a.m. on the morning of the fair –
July 9.
If you can give me an idea ahead of time as to
what you will provide, it would be most helpful. You
can contact me at 540-837-9349 or email me at
[email protected]
Many thanks in advance for your help in making
the 2011 Country Fair a big success.

Memorial Garden Update
New Proposal Approved
Our Memorial Garden is in need of attention.
Much of the original plant material has died. Despite
recent extensive weeding and cutting of the
bittersweet vines that were growing beneath the
boxwood, the garden still requires substantial work.
At its June 8th meeting, the vestry endorsed our
proposal to return the garden to its original design
with plantings that can be kept attractive with limited
maintenance. We will begin by removing the irises
that have been added over the years, presumably by
family members of those whose ashes are buried

Great Goings On
Christ Church member Howard
Means‟ biography on John Chapman,
aka Johnny Appleseed, has been
nominated for one of the most
prestigious
literary
awards
celebrating American writers, a National Book
Award. Johnny Appleseed: the Man, the Myth, the
American Story has also been nominated for a
Pulitzer Prize.
Lily Cooke, granddaughter of parish friends
Carolyn and Mazen Farouki, has started a cupcake
business this summer to raise funds for the Make-aWish Foundation and St. Jude Children‟s Research
Hospital. Lily‟s cupcakes were a hit at the recent
luncheon given in honor of Bishop David Jones. Lily
will be visiting with her grandparents this summer
and is currently taking orders! We wish her all the
luck with this wonderful endeavor which benefits
two outstanding charities.
Have you seen the Millwood Community
Garden lately? All the planning and hard work has
paid off as Millwood can now boast that it has one of
the most well-kept vegetable gardens in the area!
Dedicated volunteers are out there most Tuesday and
Thursday mornings weeding, watering, thinning and
now harvesting. The garden will provide fresh
vegetables to Christ Church Food Pantry clients as
well as to those who volunteer in the garden. There
is also paid work available for those who would like
to earn some extra money. Call Candy Means at
837-2252 for further information.
Last call for Shrine Mont
A lively group of our friends and parishioners
will attend the parish retreat July 22-24 at Shrine
Mont. We have been able to hold on to two extra
rooms at Shrine Mont just in case anyone waited to
sign up at this late date but we must "release" these
rooms in the next few days! Call Shirley Ann at 8371112 immediately if you would like to attend the
retreat. Join the fun!
Anyone wishing to attend the Ricky Skaggs
concert on July 22 or the "1964" The Tribute
performance July 23 should call 1-800-459-3396 for
ticket information.

I would like to thank everyone, especially
superwoman Caroline Roberts, Tommy Dunning, the
hospitality committee and all the legion of people
who helped make the Celtic Circle concert such a
success on June 5th. The weather was so wonderful,
as was the food and the audience. The musicians all
had a wonderful time. If Deirdre hadn't given me a
nudge to say” it‟s been an hour", I was having such a
good time I probably would have just gone on until
dark, so everyone owes her a debt of gratitude.
A couple in the audience came up to me after the
show and told me they were just driving by the
church on their way to having dinner for their thirtyfifth wedding anniversary, saw the sign out by the
road and came in to investigate and stayed. They
thought our church was very special and they loved
the music. Isn't that nice? I thank you all and to the
many who said this should be an annual occasion I
say “Hurray! Let's do it! Any time!”

Thanks to all for the prayer vigil for our son,
Freddie, after his terrible spinal injury on May 7th and
for your kindness and casseroles as we begin to come
to terms with its consequences in our lives. Your
support has been a source of great comfort to us.
Please know how grateful and privileged we feel to
belong to the Christ Church, Millwood parish family.
And please continue to pray for Freddie.
In gratitude, Wendy Clatterbuck

The Rev. Karin MacPhail to Become Next Minister of
Christ Church - Continued from page 1
This will take a little adjustment on the part of our
parishioners but I feel strongly that most of you will
never realize that Karin is only part-time. She will
have specific “office hours” where she will be
available to all of us either at the church office or by
telephone or email. These hours will also be a time
for visiting parishioners, and she can visit outside of
those times as well, particularly in emergencies. She
will officiate at all church services (including
weddings, funerals and special services) except when
on vacation, and she will continue to oversee the
Christian Formation programs as well as participate
in all aspects of our parish life.
I think I speak for many members of the parish
when I say that we are blessed to have such a
wonderful person as our new minister. I already
think of Karin as my Priest. She has become part of
our parish family and I am thrilled that we can make
it official. Her appointment gives Christ Church a
renewed sense of stability as well as a new vitality.
Plans are already underway to celebrate Karin‟s
new ministry. September is typically a busy month
anyway but this year we will be welcoming our new
Priest-in-Charge. Personally, I cannot wait.
Caroline Roberts, Senior Warden
Toasting Our Hosts
June was a particularly “social” month at Christ
Church. Our wonderful Junior Warden, Tommy
Dunning and the Hospitality Committee, chaired by
Lisa Goshen and Anne Palmer-Johnson, deserve a lot
of credit for all they do behind the scenes to make
our fellowship events flow so beautifully.
Christ Church held a lovely reception after the
“Celebrating Who We Are” concert featuring Jane
Caspar and we welcomed many visiting guests that
evening. A more casual but thoroughly enjoyed
picnic was held the following Sunday and we were
blessed with unexpected good weather as well as
delicious fare off the grill. The Bishop‟s Luncheon
was absolutely delightful with gorgeous flower
arrangements provided by Daphne Dunning and a
fabulous menu planned by Tencha Gilpin and our
Junior Warden.
Thank you to Tommy, Lisa, PJ, Tencha, and
Daphne, as well as Maisie Maguire, Bob and Nina
Randolph, Bob and Beau Goshen, Stephanie McKay,
Don Frabutt and Macon Uskurait (our photographer)
for all they have contributed to the fellowship at
Christ Church.

Memorial Garden

there. The irises will be replanted in an appropriate
spot on the church grounds. We will then add new
material that is in keeping with the design that Greg
Shannon, the brother-in-law of Bob Hobbs, donated
in1993, when Mr. Shannon was a landscape design
student at VPI.
To help us maintain this small space as an
attractive memorial, the vestry voted this month to
reaffirm the request that was made of the
congregation at the garden‟s inception 18 years ago,
namely that no urns, markers or plant material be
added to the garden. The vestry decided that cut
flowers may be placed in the garden on appropriate
anniversaries and holidays. However, families are
asked to remove the flowers once they have wilted.
The parish records indicate that the ashes of ten
people are interred in the garden. More may be
added in future years. Therefore we are investigating
options for an appropriate plaque on which the
church can record the names of those who are buried
in the Memorial Garden and those who have donated
money to its preservation.
Finally, a brief history of the garden has been
prepared from a review of the records kept in the
Bishop‟s Chapel and from conversations with Nancy
Talley, who has been instrumental in the garden‟s
care since it was planted in 1994. A copy of that
history can be found on the church website:
http://cunninghamchapel.com/
We believe it is important to compile a thorough
and accurate history of the Memorial Garden before
more time passes. Should you have any additional
information to share regarding the garden, please
contact Jeff Harris at [email protected] or
540-303-3877.
Respectfully submitted,
