First Quartile and Looking Ahead to Boxing Day Whose train is a comin’ and why are they singing Blue Moon? Arsenal are now five point clear at the top of the table. Mr Josè says he still isn’t sure who exactly are in his XI. All the money in the world can’t buy Spurs a timely goal. Manchester United look absolutely ordinary. I have absolutely no idea whether or not Liverpool have the guts to challenge the Arsenal. I thought they might, but after watching a mediocre performance on a big match day last week they cannot be very confident. However, since my comrades who salute to the cannons of Highbury can’t seem to be positive I’ll go ahead and be a pessimistic grouch as well. Who could make a run and challenge for the top spot by Christmastime? City, only six points back, definitely have the firepower and experience, but as of yet haven’t strung several solid showings together. On a positive note, City are the anti Spurs. They don’t seem to have an issue putting the ball between the posts and under the crossbar of the opponents’ goal. Spurs have looked like a very nice side, but the score line doesn’t tally aesthetic achievement. City can score goals and as I have said before the question is never “how?” but rather “how many?” The Manchester Blues looked dominate in Champions League play this week. Keep an eye on City over the next few weeks. Arsenal have a tricky trip to Old Trafford Sunday. Aside from that the other top sides have what appears to be three points for the taking. Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool are home to Newcastle, West Brom and Fulham respectively whilst City travel northeast to Wearside to face Sunderland. If City can take all three points away and keep pace I look for them to really make a move in the next month. Of course I’ll still be waiting anxiously for a Roberto Saldado goal glut… but I won’t be holding my breath… only ordering another lager to parch this goal drought. First Ashes Test from Brisbane is less than two weeks away. Silly Point
