SECTION 3
Safeguarding
Our Safeguarding Pledge
We are committed to making sure that Knowsley
Community College is where our students
•
•
•
Feel safe.
Cannot come to any physical, sexual, emotional or other harm.
Know that we will listen to any concerns they have - whether the concern is about an
issue inside or outside college – and respond swiftly and sensitively.
We want our students and their families to be confident
that we will take seriously any concern about student
welfare or well-being reported to us and that we will
act strongly if we find our students are in any actual or
potential harm, whoever is causing the harm.
So, please tell a teacher, your Personal Tutor or a
Learner Services Adviser immediately if you are
concerned about your safety and wellbeing or that of
another student. You can also report a safeguarding
concern by calling the Safeguarding telephone number
0151 481 4629.
Anti Bullying
The College wants all students to feel totally safe at all times,
including safe from the threat of any bullying and regardless
of the reason. If you feel that you are being bullied, whether
physically, verbally, face to face or through social media, it is
essential that you tell a member of staff immediately.
This can be your Learner Services Adviser, your Personal
Tutor or a teacher. We would also want you, of course, to
tell your parents or carers. We will always listen to you, deal
sensitively with any report of bullying, take immediate action
to protect students who feel that they are being bullied and
always intervene to stop the alleged bully.
We would also ask you to report to us on behalf of other
students if you see someone being bullied.
Bullying doesn’t stop unless someone makes it stop, so
please help us to help you to be safe
and happy at all times, everywhere.
Staying Safe Online
We want all our students to be safe
online. This means that it is important
you know how to protect yourself
and make sure that your own online
activity does not hurt or harm others.
Please tell your tutor, your
Personal Tutor or a Learner Services
Adviser immediately if you or anyone
you know is at risk of being bullied or
harmed on-line.
To keep yourself and others safe, follow
these simple rules:
1. Never give out your details online. This includes your
username, email, telephone number, pictures, where you live,
where you are and when you will be out or on holiday etc.
2. Keep your anti-virus software up to date. Effective antivirus
software can be found for free on the internet by searching
‘antivirus free’ in your search engine.
3. Make sure you keep your settings to private (e.g.
Facebook) and ask an Adviser to show you if you don’t know
how to do this.
4. Always remember that people can easily lie and pretend
to be someone they are not. So never trust what people who
you don’t know tell you about themselves online.
5. Never meet up with strangers you meet online without an
adult you can trust.
6. Always be kind online. Never say something online that you
wouldn’t say offline in real life. Posting malicious, offensive or
threatening comments online is illegal. We will always deal with online bullying through our
Student Conduct Policy.
7. Never post any inappropriate indecent photos or videos on-line. Anything you post online usually stays on the internet for a long time and can’t be deleted, this is particularly important with pictures and videos.
8. If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable or upset on line, including trying to persuade
you into any form of sexual discussions,
extremist ideas or illegal actions, make sure you tell us
immediately.
Emails/Messages
1. Don’t open messages from people you don’t know.
2. If something is too good to be true, it usually is and is best
ignored.
3. Spam or junk mail usually contains tricks and lies, and
often tries to trick you into clicking on harmful links. Never
open attachments in emails from people you don’t know.
They could contain viruses that could destroy your hard
drive or install software, including spyware, that watches
everything you do.
Getting Help
If you have any concerns or worries about your online safety,
please speak to a member of staff, your Personal Tutor or a
Learner Services Adviser. You can also speak to the police.
There are websites, including www.getsafeonline.org and
www.thinkuknow.co.uk, which have lots more information
about e-safety.
Preventing Radicalisation
The College is committed to British Values of:
•
Respecting the Law
•
Respecting everyone regardless of differences
•
Achieving change through the democratic process of elections.
This is very important because it means that we can all be
free and safe. However, a very small number of people, both
with and without faith, do not share these values.
These people can be capable of extremist or terrorist
action that can hurt others and the environment. They can
be religious, political or supporters of a particular issue.
Members of these groups can attempt to persuade others,
either face to face or on-line, to join them. This is a grooming
process called radicalisation. We treat this as a safeguarding
issue because radicalised people often become exploited,
harmed, or put into prison.
We are committed to protecting our students from all harm
including from being radicalised. This is in keeping with the
Government strategy called Prevent. The Prevent strategy
requires everyone to look out for themselves, and people they
know, and prevent them from being harmed by extremists.
So, if you know of anyone trying to persuade you, or
someone you know, to accept extreme views or break
the law, please tell a member or staff – your teacher, your
Personal Tutor or a Learner Services Adviser.
Alcohol, Drugs and Weapons
We operate a zero tolerance approach to alcohol, drugs,
including new psychoactive substances (also known as ‘nps’
or ‘legal highs’), and the possession of any weapons. The
possession, consumption or being under the influence of
alcohol, new psychoactive substances or the possession of
weapons in College is totally unacceptable. Any individual
who breaches College policy will be subject to the Learner
Conduct Policy and will be reported immediately to the
police.
Sexual Exploitation
Child Sexual Exploitation is where a child or young person
is exploited and abused by being given something, such as
gifts, money, affection, housing, alcohol or drugs, in return for
performing or taking part in sexual activity.
It can be perpetrated by anyone – family members, family
friends, girlfriends or boyfriends, peers, strangers and by
people in positions of trust such as teachers, doctors and
religious leaders. It can happen face to face or online. Online
sexual abuse is where a child or young person is forced to:
•
•
•
Send sexually explicit images of themselves
Take part in sexual activity via webcam
Have sexual conversations by text or phone
If you or anyone you know about is worried about sexual
exploitation or abuse, please tell us immediately. You can
speak to your teacher, Personal Tutor or a Learner Services
Adviser. For more information on Sexual Exploitation, go to
https://www.barnardos.org.uk/cse
SECTION 4
Policies and Procedures
Student Charter
The College Student Charter sets out what we expect
from our students and what our students can expect from
the College. It is very important that you read the Charter
carefully so that you are clear about your responsibilities and
your rights. This will enable you to play your part in ensuring
the College is a safe and happy place where everyone can
achieve their goals.
To download a copy of the Student Charter and all the
policies summarised below, please go to the Information
section of MyDay.
Safeguarding
Keeping you safe is our priority. If you or soeone you know
feels unsafe or is at risk of harm, no matter what, tell us
immediately. You can download our Safeguarding Policy from
our website and obtain safeguarding information from the
College website and the Safeguarding tile on MyDay.
Equality and Diversity
We want everyone to feel welcome in College, regardless of
any differences, so that all our students feel happy, safe and
can achieve and prosper. We expect everyone in College
to respect differences of all kinds including gender, sexual
orientation, being or becoming transsexual, disability and
learning difficulty, race and ethnic origin, faith and no faith,
pregnancy or maternity.
We will respond strongly to any type of discrimination and ask
anyone to report immediately any type of discrimination they
witness to their teacher, Personal Tutor or a Learner Services
Adviser.
We ask everyone to sign our Equality and Diversity pledge
at the beginning of their course. Our Equality and Diversity
Policy can be downloaded from the College website.
Student Performance Policy
We want everyone to succeed on their course. The Student
Performance Policy is designed for students who need help
to overcome any barriers to their success. When needed, it
includes a review with your Personal Tutor, an action plan to
get you vack on track, and to monitor your progress.
It is expected that most of our students will not be drawn into
this Policy as they will have 100% attendance, be on their
correct course and be completing class and course work at
appropriate levels for their qualification.
Student Conduct Policy
KCC takes the welfare of its staff and students and student
behaviour very seriously. Occasionally, a small number of students
can have a negative effect on the experiences of staff and other
students, on their own and other’s performance and/or on the
reputation of the College, when their behaviour falls below an
acceptable standard either inside or outside the College, or they
fail to comply with College policies and procedures. When this
happens, the College will not hesitate to take action under the
Student Conduct Policy. This policy is designed to:
•
Make students aware of the standard of behaviour expected
•
Ensure a safe, welcoming environment so that everyone can achieve their learning, progression and personal development goals
•
Ensure a very positive relationship with our local community. This is a priority to the College so it is expected that all our students act in a way that presents KCC and student body as well behaved, polite and mindful of the community.
The Student Conduct Policy can be found in the Information
section of MyDay.
Attendance and Lateness
Excellent attendance and punctuality is essential for students
to succeed, progress and be ready for employment. Students
who arrive late disrupt their own learning and that of others.
We expect our learners to:
•
•
Attend all sessions and arrive prepared before the start of each session.
Avoid commitments that clash with college session
Where absence is unavoidable:
•
Contact the College by 9am on each day of your absence, giving the reason and an
indication of its duration. You can contact the
Absence Hotline 0151 477 5844 or complete
the absence form on the KCC website.
•
Arrange a Study Buddy who will collect any materials and pass on homework and messages.
•
Complete outstanding work as a result of lateness and/or absence, with support as appropriate.
•
Take your self-certifications, letters from parents/
•
carers or appointment cards to Reception on your return.
•
Understand that College Pays support, entry into exams and the qualification may be affected.
•
Understand that persistent, non-justified lateness and/
or absence will lead to further action as outlined
in the Student Performance or Conduct Policies.
Students should be aware that if their attendance falls below
95% on any part of their programme of study or overall, an
attendance letter will be sent to the student and/or parents.
If attendance does not improve and continues to fall to 90%
on any aspect of the student’s programme or overall, he or
she will be called for an On Track Review. If being late is
unavoidable, please let your tutor know beforehand where
possible, enter the class quietly with minimum disruption.
Dress Code
We believe that how students dress plays an important and
valuable role in contributing to College values, in setting an
appropriate tone for behaviour and attitude and is key to
standards expected at work. We therefore expect students to
dress in a manner that contributes to:
•
Keeping everyone safe. We must be able to identify individual students, staff and visitors. This means that everyone must always carry an appropriate College ID badge, and hats, hoods or sunglasses must not be worn.
•
Helping teachers ensure engagement in learning. Where a student’s face is obscured for any reason,
for example by hats, hoods, sunglasses etc, the teacher may not be able to judge engagement.
•
Ensuring Health and Safety compliance. To avoid injuries to themselves and others, students must
ensure they adhere to the Health and Safety Code
for their vocational area. This means that students must wear appropriate personal protective clothing
and remove jewellery before practicals.
•
Promoting an inclusive, happy College. We want everyone to feel part of the College and be happy
during their time here. Please wear clothing and
accessories that will not cause offence to others.
Any breaches of the College Dress Code, including at the
point of interview, enrolment or recruitment, will be dealt with
by College Heads of Faculty or the Head of Learner Services
and Safeguarding.
Mobile Phones
We recognise that mobile phones are a normal part of
everyday life and in some cases, tutors allow the use of
mobile phones in lessons for
course related work. However, where
phones are not used as part of the
lesson, they can cause disruption
and prevent learning and progress.
Therefore, unless otherwise requested by your tutor, please ensure that
your mobile phone is switched off
during your lessons. In exceptional
cases where you may need to be
contacted, you can ask your tutor,
before the session, for permission to
leave your phone on.
The College Environment
KCC invests a great deal of money and time on continuously
improving the physical appearance and comfort of the
campus environment with everyone in mind. We ask in return
that you take responsibility to take care of the environment.
To do this, please:
•
•
•
•
Always wear or carry your membership badge.
Excellent and affordable food and drinks are available in College. Students can also bring in packed lunches but are asked not to bring food purchased outside into the College. To maintain clean surroundings, eat only in the designated areas.
Ensure that you leave your classroom tidy and always put litter in the bins provided
Respect the College’s No Smoking Policy. In the interest of health and safety and to keep within the law, smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes,
is prohibited in apart from the designated areas. Students found smoking or using e-cigarettes in
in non-designated areas will face
disciplinary action under the Student
Conduct Procedure.
• Smoking is prohibited anywhere on our Main Campus at Stockbridge Lane.
•
Keep all outside doors closed in cold weather
•
Ensure that lights are turned off at the end of lessons and the classroom is left tidy.
•
Report any required repairs to Reception staff.
College Visits
To help you make the right choices about your future, you
may get an opportunity to go on visits as part of your course.
This might include visits to employers, businesses, HE
institutions, industry fairs and events, community locations or
expeditions. To ensure your safety and wellbeing, the College
is legally obliged to ensure that adequate risk assessments
are completed and that all students are insured. Before any
visit, if you are under 19, you must ensure your parent/carer
completes a Consent Form and that you give it to the party
leader by the deadline.
Fire and Emergency Evacuations
On hearing the alarm, follow instructions given by staff,
leave the building by the nearest exit and go to the nearest
fire assembly point. Fire assembly points are clearly signed.
Lifts should not be used in the event of a fire. You must not
re-enter the building until you receive permission. There are
special arrangements for students with mobility problems.
The Fire Brigade know where disabled persons may be
unable to exit the building, so, if you have mobility problems
or are a wheelchair user, it is essential you inform the Head
of Environment on 0151 481 4646 who will contact you to
arrange a safety assessment.
Using Your Car
One-way traffic systems must always be observed. Any
vehicle parked on college property must use a valid permit,
available from Reception, and be parked in marked bays.
Parking is not permitted:
•
In bays for people with disabilities without the appropriate badge.
•
In hatched areas.
•
On double yellow lines.
The College management reserves the right to inspect the
following documents:
•
•
•
Proof of ownership.
Proof of insurance.
Your driving licence.
Bicycle storage units are also available. Ask at Reception for
details.
SECTION 5
Getting Involved
We believe there is more to College life than just studying
for a qualification. In a competitive environment, universities
and employers are looking for applicants who broaden their
studies by taking part in extra activities.
We have a range of Enrichment activities you can take part
in at Knowsley Community College including volunteering
at the College Radio Station (KCC Live), taking part in the
National Citizenship Service Programme, Duke of Edinburgh,
an extensive Sports timetable,
and helping to raise much
needed resources for
charities.
Taking part means that
you’re guaranteed to have
fun and make new friends.
Also, the experience, skills
and knowledge you’ll gain
will help improve your CV
and UCAS applications,
making you more employable
in the future.
If you would like some help to
get involved and take part in
activities offered by the College, or you want to find out what
else you can get involved in outside the College:
•
•
Visit the College Enrichment Fair on September 14th 12 – 3.30 pm in the Stanley Building.
Speak to your College Youth Worker at any time during your course. College Youth Workers are based in Learner Services.
KCC Live
The College has its own Radio Academy and Sony Award
Nominated community radio station, KCC Live. The station
broadcasts online and on air 24 hours a day on 99.8 FM and
at www.kcclive.com.
This is a great option, particularly for Media and Performing
Arts students although everyone is very welcome to join.
If being a presenter, producer,
researcher or DJ sounds
interesting to you, pop into
the studio to talk to the station
manager, Christine Farrell or
call 0151 481 4602. KCC Live is
located on the first floor of the
Kemble Building.
SECTION 6
Giving Feedback
Knowsley Community College values your feedback to make
sure we provide the best teaching, services and facilities we
can. We want your feedback, be it a compliment on what
we are doing well, a compliment, a comment or a complaint.
This is why we have a Learner Voice process that listens to,
values and responds to your suggestions and ideas. As well
as speaking directly to any member of staff, you can give us
your feedback in several ways through:
•
Course Representatives, Student Leaders and the Student Council
•
Student Governors
•
Surveys
•
MyDay Have Your Say
•
Compliments, Comments and Complaints Procedure
Course Representatives, Student Leaders and Governors
Course Representatives play a very important part in Learner
Voice, shaping the way the College works for students.
Course Representatives gather the views of fellow students
about anything related to College. This includes teaching
and learning, support services, IT, facilities and the College
environment. Course Representatives then provide the
information to Student Leaders to discuss with senior
college managers. Student Leaders are elected from Course
Representatives and make up the Student Council. Student
Leaders will provide information to senior management,
including the Principal and Deputy Principal. Student Leaders
will also give feedback to students on the outcomes of these
discussions such as the improvements or changes that will
be made. You will receive information about how you can
become a Course Representative and/or Student Leader at
the beginning of your course. Student Governors are elected
by the Student Council. They attend the College Governing
Body, contributing to discussions about how the College is
run. Being a Student Representative or a Student Governor
will give you great experience, and be an invaluable addition
to your CV or UCAS application.
Student Surveys and MyDay
Student Surveys give us comprehensive information on the
quality of your experiences at College. These only take a
few minutes to complete so as not to take up too much of
your time. They are completely anonymous although we
sometimes ask which course you are doing. To complete
theme, just log in to MyDay and click ‘Have Your Say’.
Compliments, Comments and Complaints
If you would like to give us a compliment or make a comment
on any aspect of our service, you can complete a Comments,
Compliments and Complaints form, available on the KCC
website or alternatively from Reception. Please then send it to
the Quality Department.
If you are not satisfied that your complaint has been sorted
out, you can make a formal complaint. Please let us know
immediately by completing a Compliments, Comments
and Complaints form and send it to the College Quality
Department. You will receive a reply within ten working days.
If you need help to complete the form, please ask a Learner
Services Adviser.
