A 2005 article in The Courier-Journal gives credit to a private social club, called The Pendennis Club, for making the very first old-fashioned. James E. Pepper, bartender and esteemed bourbon aristocrat, was said to have invented the drink in Louisville, before he brought the recipe to the WaldorfAstoria Hotel bar in New York City. T H E H I S T O R Y Dick Bradsel dubbed the Cocktail King, became famous after inventing the Bramble in 1984. It is widely seen as a creation coming from its forerunner the Thomas Gin Fix. The bramble is essentially a short gin sour with a drizzle of crème de mûre, a French blackberry liqueur, over the top. Nevertheless it taste completely different and can stand its ground.
