Ocala Elks No. 286

VOLUME 15
May 2017
ISSUE 5
Hello Fellow Elk Members!! We’ve had a great FIRST month. We
had our 122nd Installation of Officers on April 1. Along with the
ceremony, there was a complementary dinner; which was a
delicious success! We had a wonderful attendance at this event,
especially with all the PER’s that assisted in the installation of
the officers. The PER’s are a valuable asset to this Lodge. Also,
please give PER Rusty Gilmore a great hand for putting this event
together.
Kathy’s Exhausted Hen Party on Saturday April 8 was a success,
too. Many members came out to celebrate her great year as the
Ocala Elks Exalted Ruler. Congratulations, Kathy! You made it
to PER!
The House Committee has put together some great events that
are coming up soon. Check the calendar for these upcoming events. Mike Miller has informed me
that he has 10 members on the House committee and they are very excited and working very hard
to make the club a place where you want to be. Whenever you are planning to have a group, be it
large or small, coming to dinner here at the Lodge, call ahead. Reservation not required YET; but
you will be giving the staff a heads up so that they can better accommodate you.
In the last newsletter, I challenged each member to sponsor at least one new member in this new
year. You will be hearing about this in every newsletter; because membership is the life line of this
Lodge. I have another challenge for our members. Any member or members that you have
sponsored, and you have not seen them here at the Lodge recently, invite them to join you for a
dinner one night or ask them to accompany you to one of the many upcoming events.
At the time of this newsletter, we have 500 members who are current with their dues for the 201718 year, which is great. We have a total of 701 members registered at the lodge but that number
changes almost daily. So please contact the lodge to get your dues paid. You don’t want to miss out
on belonging to the BEST Elks Lodge in the State of Florida.
The Florida Elks State Convention (FECON ’17) is May 25-28 at the Orlando World Center
Marriott. I encourage you to attend this convention and see what the Grand Lodge and other
Lodges in the state are involved in. These are very informative sessions; and the social activities
are very enjoyable, also. There will be a Ritual Team Competition which is awesome to watch. A
performance not to be missed. For more information go to floridaelks.org.
Thank all of you for being Members of Ocala Lodge #286. The Officers and myself will be looking
forward to seeing you at the lodge.

On Friday night, May 5, we have the
Starburst Band in our lounge, with
brother and sister duo, Joe and

selection is great.
Saturday, May 6, we have the
Kentucky Derby Party kicking off at
4 PM. This party always has a good
turnout and everyone has so much
fun. Additional entertainment is
planned for after the race.
Friday, May 12, we have Danny and

somehow over time, they have gotten
even better and even more popular.
A Message from the
House Committee
It hardly seems possible that we have
completed our first month already.
Even in that time things have really
started to turn the dining room and bar
to the member friendly atmosphere we
promised. Carol has returned on Friday
nights so that the first thing our
members see is her smiling face
waiting happily to seat them at their
favorite table. We will continue to
make the dining room warmer and the
food appealing to our members to keep
them happy. Gary and the kitchen
continue to put out the first class food
that our members deserve and the
creative specials on the menu continue
to make our diners happy. Last
month’s steak kabobs and crab cakes
drew rave reviews.
Make sure to get your tickets and
reservations in early for our Mother’s
Day Champagne brunch on Sunday
May 14. Call the lodge and hit #3 or
talk to the bartenders or Carol to make
reservations.
Dennis Rose continues to bring in the
top area performers to fill the lounge
up on Friday nights. Make sure when
you see him to thank him for the great
job that he does for us. Make sure to
read the “Friday Night In The Lounge”
for all off the fun things we have
coming up in May. From Cinco de
Mayo where you can order our special
nachos appetizer and drink our special
priced Coronas and margaritas to the
Triple Crown races, we have a great
lineup of fun times for you, our
Brothers and Sisters of the Elks.
A special thanks to our OLEO ladies
for all of the help and support they
have given us. They are the lodge’s
“unsung heroes”. Make sure you get
your tickets to their Bunco on May 27.
As always special thanks to all of the
members of the House Committee for
all of the work they do to make all of
our events run smoothly. Members,
keep in mind to that we welcome all
suggestions and comments. Send them
to [email protected]
interested in going as we have
to let Jennifer know how many
are coming so they can prepare
lunch for visitors.
Hello once again to everyone,
On Thursday evening, April
13th, the 2017/2018 officers
were sworn in at the monthly
meeting of OLEO. They are
Carole Knight, President .. Gail
DeVilling, Vice President ..
Becky Long, Treasurer .. Betty
Lee, Recording Secretary and
Barbara Wilkins, Corresponding
Secretary. We are all looking
forward to a successful and
meaningful year. There are lots
of plans for the future.
The Fashion Show which was on
April 22 was a tremendous
success. Everyone had a
fabulous lunch and saw so many
gorgeous clothes. Every girl's
dream. My thanks go out to
everyone involved and for their
efforts to make this show be
special and fun.
On May 12, there will be a
special trip to the Elks Youth
Camp. Again, I urge anyone
that has not gone to this
amazing facility to plan to join
us. We need to meet at the Elks
Club by 9am since they would
like us to be at the facility to
start the tour at 10:30 followed
by lunch. All Elk members are
invited and encouraged to join
in as this trip is so worthwhile
and informative. If we have
enough people interested in
going, the Youth Camp will pay
for a bus. Additional information can be obtained by calling
me or any of the OLEO Officers.

DO YOU KNOW WHY….
Why do men's clothes have buttons
on the right while women's clothes
have buttons on the left?
BECAUSE
When buttons were invented, they
were very expensive and worn
primarily by the rich. Since most
people are right-handed, it is easier
to push buttons on the right through
holes on the left. Because wealthy
women were dressed by maids,
dressmakers put the buttons on the
maid's right! And that's where
women's buttons have remained
since.

“So long as there are Veterans,
the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them”
The following is a continuation of the article started last month and depicts some of what Elks have done to serve
Veterans over the years, it is a rich history and one that all of us can be extremely proud of as Elks.
1940: With World War II apparent, the Elks unanimously voted to establish the Elks National Defense and Public Relations
Commission, which placed the power of the Order behind the United States National Defense Program.
1941: Right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Grand Exalted Ruler John S. McClelland sent a telegram to President
Roosevelt placing the Order of Elks at the nation's disposal.
1942: January 4, 1942 was born the Elks War Commission. With the initial war chest of $35,000, the US Army asked the
Elks War Commission to help recruit 45,000 young men for the ground crews of the Army Air Corps. The Commission,
with the help of the local Lodges, recruited 97,000 men. The Elks War Commission set up a program in cooperation with
Lodges that were close to large military camps to provide Brother Elks with the benefits of their membership in the spare
time available to them, and to provide members of the Armed Forces who were not Elks some of the comforts of home
while far away from their families. Throughout the United States, 155 Elks Fraternal Centers were established which were
supported by the Elks National War Commission, and in many instances, by individual Lodges. Because of the Elks War
Commission’s record of accomplishment, the Elks were asked to help recruit men skilled in construction for the Army
Corps of Engineers and the Navy Construction Battalions. With the enthusiasm and efficiency of our Lodges, the requested
numbers of Army Engineers and Navy Seabees were met three months ahead of schedule. This is a legacy we can all be
proud of and continue to do so in the future.
1946 It was through the Elks’ work with hospitalized veterans during World War II, that we continued our evolution of
"SERVING OUR NATION'S VETERANS”. In July 1946, at the Grand Lodge Session in New York, the Elks National
Veterans Service Commission was created to replace the Elks War Commission. The main goals of the new Commission
were "to carry on the Hospital Program”.
1946 The Elks provided funds and materials to build a recreational unit at the Navy Hospital in Guam.
1946 During this Grand Lodge Session, the Elks pledged, "So Long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective
Order of Elks will never forget them". Our commitment continues to this day, providing comfort and care to Veterans in
over 300 VA and State Hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, and USO centers.
1946 The Elks rededicated the National Memorial to honor veterans of WWII.
1950 When war broke out in Korea in 1950, the Elks responded by sending gift packs as they had in World War II. The
same was done during the conflicts in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and continues in our most recent confrontations in the Middle
East.
1951 The Secretary of Defense appealed to the Order for help in procuring blood for our wounded. Within a few months,
the Elks Lodges obtained over a half million pints.
1960’s and 70’s During the Vietnam War, the Defense Department was concerned with the morale of our 400,000 troops
fighting communist aggression because of the anti-American sentiments being reported on the home front. It was decided
that a "Letters from Home" campaign would help counteract all the negative acts emanating from this country. The Elks
answered the call and flooded these fine young defenders of freedom with letters expressing our gratitude for the sacrifices
they were making for our country.
