Welcome to autumn at Sheldon Meadows! This is always my favorite time of year. We have had a beautiful summer full of wonderful memories. We are so grateful for the family that we have created here at Sheldon Meadows. It is nice to know you always have someone to help you through rough times and also here to celebrate with you. We will be sending out the fall satisfaction surveys the last week of September. They will come to you via email. If you are unsure if we have your current email-please touch base with Linda in the office. If you are in need of a paper copy, please see Annie or Linda who will be able to provide you with one. The surveys are important as it gives us an opportunity know where we shine and know where we are in need of some improvement. These are very important tools as we are always striving to give the best care we can to our residents here at Sheldon Meadows. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family and friends of Ed C., Dorothy V., Jennie DR., Dee F., Sue K. Thank you for sharing their lives with us. Norma K. Jerry J. Gladys D. Lew D. Ed S. Norma T. September 13 September 15 September 17 September 20 September 24 September 28 Maggie S. Maggie S. was born to Margaret and Clifton K. on February 1, 1927 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Maggie had one brother who was fourteen months younger. Maggie loved to ride her bike. She and a friend would ride to places fifteen to twenty miles away, making refreshment stops at farms along the way. Maggie enjoyed school and graduated as Valedictorian of her high school. After graduation she attended secretarial school in the nearby town of Jonesboro. Maggie met her husband Max when they were in the 9th grade. Max was a hunting and fishing buddy of her Dad. They were married in March 1948 after Max had completed his first military service. Maggie continued to work as a secretary when Max began his second tour of duty in the Army. When Max returned they moved to the nearest city, Memphis, Tennessee, where Max was employed by Memphis Funeral Home for the rest of his career. Maggie worked at several different businesses in Memphis, including an interior design firm. Their family grew to include two sons, Kirk and Steve. Steve worked for the U.S. State Department for twenty seven years, twenty of which were served overseas. Maggie wrote Steve and his family a letter every week, sent them clippings from the newspaper, and recorded TV programs for them to watch. Maggie was very involved in the Baptist Church. She was president of Women in Missions and provided transportation for church members who had medical appointments. She was also very active in the community, serving on advisory bodies for the public library and the post office. Maggie is an avid reader and has a great love for music. Max had a wonderful voice and Maggie would accompany him on the piano. Maggie liked to make things, especially Christmas ornaments for sharing with family and friends. Max passed away in 2001. In 2014 Maggie moved to Water Valley, Mississippi and shared a home with a friend when she felt she should no longer live alone. She moved to Sheldon Meadows in June 2016 to be closer to family. Maggie enjoys crafting, helping others, and attending music programs. Thank you, Maggie, for sharing a part of your life with us. Hello, my name is Michael T. I have worked in the Culinary Dept. at Sheldon Meadows for just over a year now, and I like it very much. I have been married to my wife Donna for twenty-nine years; we will celebrate our thirtieth wedding anniversary in October. My favorite time of year is fall in Michigan, it is so beautiful! Donna and I love to take color tours all over the state. We put our dog in the car and drive for days. Working here is one of the best things to ever happen for me. I enjoy the interaction with everyone here. I have really learned a lot, and continue to learn something new every day. With respect to the calendar, September marks the beginning of the months with less onomastically exciting names that signify nothing other than their numerical position in the year. September comes from the Latin root septem-, meaning “seven,” because in the original Roman republican calendar September was the seventh month of the year rather than the ninth. The Roman calendar was only ten months long and included the following months—Martius, Aprilis, Maius, Junius, Quintilis, Sextilis, September, October, November, and December. The last six months were assigned names according to their ordinal numbers—Quintilis is the fifth month, Sextilis is the sixth month, and so on. It was not until 45 BC when Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar (named after Caesar, himself ) that the year grew to include two more months, January and February. Quintilis and Sextilis were later renamed to July and August in honor of Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar, but despite repeated attempts to change them, the names for September, October, November, and December not only stuck, but spread to other languages, as well. The strangeness of calling the ninth month “Seventh Month” did not seem to bother Old English speakers. September came into Old English from Old French, replacing the Old English forms, Hāligmōnað and Hærfestmōnað, which mean “harvest month” in Modern English. Had the Roman senate gotten their way, we might now be calling September Tiberius or Antoninus, after two Roman Emperors. Or we might have ended up calling September Augustus as followers of the Emperor Commodus hoped, or Germanicus, as Emperor Domitian wanted. Would these names have been any better than calling the ninth month… SEPTEMBER?
