Selection:
Buying:
Choose apples that are firm, shiny, smoothskinned, and free of bruises and dents. Do
not buy apples that feel soft and spongy or
that smell musty.
Storage:
Store unwashed apples in a cool dark place
or in a resealable plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Store away from strong-odored foods.
Room Temperature: 1 to 2 days
Refrigerator: Up to 1 month
Use:
Rinse apples thoroughly before preparing.
Apples are good for both cooking and eating
raw.

Hanging Scale:
The number the arrow is
pointing to = Total Weight
Weigh produce to find out exactly how much it
will cost. Place the number of apples you would
like to buy on the scale provided, and round up to
the closest pound or half pound. The cost is the
total weight in pounds multiplied by the price per
pound.
Total Weight (lbs) x Price = Cost of Apples
Use this table to find the total cost.
Example: What is the total cost for 2 lbs of apples at
$0.99 per lb? 2 lbs x $0.99 = $1.98

The Nutrition Facts Label shown here is for 1
large apple. All apples are not the same size,
but you can use this to estimate the nutrition
content for a smaller or larger apple.
Recipe:
Spicy Apple-Filled Squash
Preparation Time: 60 minutes
Serves 4
Cups of Fruit per Serving: ¼
Ingredients:
1 acorn squash
1 Golden Delicious apple, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 teaspoons melted butter or margarine
2 teaspoons brown sugar
⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
Dash ground cloves (optional)
Preparation:
1.) Preheat oven to 350oF. Grease a small baking dish.
2.) Halve squash and remove seeds, cut into quarters.
Place quarters, skin side up, in a dish and cover.
Bake 30 minutes.
3.) In a medium bowl, combine apple, butter, brown
sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, if desired.
4.) Turn cut sides of acorn squash up, top with apple
mixture. Cover and bake 30 minutes longer or until
apples are tender.
5.) Serve warm.
