Breaking Points 33 - The County Sligo Golf Club

Breaking Points 33
Captain’s Log
Many of our teams were in action over the past week.
Our Cecil Ewing team under the captaincy of Sean
Moylan & assisted by Pat Lyons were narrowly beaten by
Boyle GC. Many thanks to Sean, Pat & all the panel for
their brave efforts over the last number of weeks.
Our Kenny Cup team qualified for the Connacht Final. A
special mention to Tom O’Hara who shot 1 under par
gross on the day.
Paul Keys captained our Junior Cup team through the
qualifiers in Ballina last Saturday. Unfortunately we
were beaten by a very strong Westport team at the
matchplay stage. Our thanks to Paul & all the panel for
their commitment over the past few months
Our Jack O’Sullivan team are in action on Thursday this
week. Best of luck to John Gilmartin & his team.
We wish Lady Captain Carmel a very successful Lady
Captain’s Day on Saturday next 18th July and good luck
to all the competitors on the day.

Brendan (right) who would certainly give his eye teeth to win
every week by three clear shots as he did on Saturday with an
excellent 39 points. In 2nd place was Felix,by way of a great back
9,from a plethora of players on 36. Brendan’s playing partners
were Tony Leonard, Pat McDaniel and Niall Stafford who knew
the drill and had to buy the tea and scones for the winner. He
crowned off the weekend with a 75 on Sunday and is now off 5.
Campbell Cup Qualifier Sun 12th July
The leading qualifier was Dermot McKenna (pictured with son
Charlie and US and British Open trophies!) with a nett 64.
Dermot remarkably was playing in his first competitive round
since winter league final with Michael McNamara (Sligo's own
Dave Peltz) and Owen Mulligan. With mostly pars and bogeys,
including a chip in on 14, and a great scoring looming the 17th
reached out and a triple bogey ensued. Encouraged by playing
partners he finished in style with a great par. Dermot would like
to recognise the ball finding assistance of Michael and Owen.
Cup draw on next page.
CAMPBELL CUP
The Campbell Cup, sponsored by Fergal Burke and Associates, was presented to the Club by
Lieutenant Colonel James Campbell (pictured below). There is little doubt that our club owes its
existence to Campbell, who chaired the first meeting of the club on the 18th of October 1894 and
became our first captain. The minutes of the meeting quotes that Campbell explained the object of
the meeting and the steps taken in forming the club . At the first annual general meeting of the Club
a vote of thanks to Lieutenant Colonel James Campbell “for the trouble he had taken in forming the
club” was carried unanimously”
James Campbell was Lt Col in the Sligo Militia and was
familiar with the golf course land because the Militia, held
training camps in Bomore. He made acquaintances with
Henry Middleton who owned the land and lived on his own
in Elsinore. He then agreed a land lease deal for the golf
club and laid out a few holes for the officers to play.

Middleton has been immortalised in verse by his nephew W..
B Yeats in Three Songs to the One Burden :..
My name is Henry Middleton,..
I have a small demesne,..
A small forgotten house that’s set,..
On a storm bitten green....
The demesne being the aforementioned
Elsinore which is visible from the scenic walk.

The Campbell Cup (see notice -> ) was
traditionally played for on August
Monday with sixteen to qualify for match
play. These matches were played during
the first week in August with the final
played on the Friday. It was always the
premier competition of Open Week.
Some years ago this was changed
probably because it restricted those who
qualified from playing in the other
competitions in Open Week
James was the eldest son of
Harper Campbell who owned the
firm Harper Campbell one of the
largest provision and curing
business in Ireland. He became
chairman on the death of his father
in 1899. He served the town and
portal Sligo as one of the harbour
commissioners and he was
chairman during the great war. He
re married when his first wife died
after 1 year. and he had 2 brothers
Harper Campbell and William. He
died in 1924 ..
With 6,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 165 countries, along with 30,000
volunteers and an anticipated 500,000 spectators, the 2015 Special Olympics World Games
will be the largest sports and humanitarian event. Golfer Margaret Carr from Calry takes
the best wishes of all Co.Sligo.Golf Club when she represents Ireland in Los Angeles in a
few weeks time. There, she will be competing with golfers from over 100 countries through a
hectic week from July 27th on the Harding & Wilson golf courses. It will be the magic
culmination of 4 years of preparation and competition here in Ireland at courses such as
Castle Dargan, Ballinrobe,Tuam and Ballykisteen for a place on the Irish Team. Margaret
will also be representing her fellow golfers here in Sligo especially some 25 who train every
week in Bomore, overseen by 15 volunteer Club members and the ever pleasant Cub
Professional Jim Robinson who helps all the enthusiastic athletes to their best potential.
Margaret has been several times on the Irish teams that excels at the biennial 5 Nations
Tournaments. Most recently she was in the group that went to the Irish Open in Co. Down
and was honoured by Uachtaran Michael D Higgins and given a Bar BQ reception at the
American Embassy by Ambassador O'Malley. A hectic but equally important social calendar
which culminated last Friday with a presentation by Lady Captain Carmel to convey the best
wishes of the club to Margaret. Report by Rory Callaghy

Quiz
Corner
Nearing the end of a job
interview that was going
well the interviewer asked
“what is your greatest weakness” and
the candidate answered “Its my
honesty”. The interviewer replied
chidingly “I don’t think honesty is a
weakness” to which came the reply
“I don’t give a **** what you think ?”
Next Trip of Wednesdays to
Westport July 22nd.
Meet in Westport GC at
11:15am for draw.
LAST WEEKS ANSWER – BALL IN BUNKER? a)No, sand spilling over the margin of a bunker is not part of the bunker.
Decision 13/1. As there is a definite ridge, with grass growing below where the ball is at rest, the intended margin of the bunker
is obvious. b) Yes, a player may ground their club in a bunker when their ball does not lie in that bunker. c) Yes, a player may
remove any loose impediment from a bunker when their ball does not lie in that bunker. Rule 23-1. d) There is no penalty when
the wind causes the ball to roll into the bunker, as the player had not completed address of their ball and also did not cause
their ball to move. They must play the ball from the bunker.
Is it permitted for a player to
take clubs into a bunker and
lay them down while he
makes his stroke from that
bunker.(see pic => )
In the absence of the low man in a Fourball Match, his handicap is still nevertheless
used to determine the shots allowance. It is not based on the lowest handicap present.
LOST BALL APPEAL In the weeks before Captains day a special bond had
developed (over the course of 108 holes) between Donal Barry and a Titleist 8. It was
to be his ace in the hole on Captains Day but sadly he lost it on the 7th and the dream
was over. The next day whilst playing the 7th. he was mysteriously drawn to a spot
where he felt T8 lay and there it was , waiting for its master!. He used it from then on
and when he lost it off his drive on the 12th. they had played 138 memorable holes
together. So next time you are right of the 12th lookout for T8 & bring this touching tale
to a fitting end.
MYSTERY MEMBER Last weeks MM was the colourful Donal “Poundy” Barry. This week we have a pair of mystery
members, circled, from an Insurance Golf presentation back in nineteen something and something …any ideas??
Well done to Sean Flanagan & Alex Gleeson Ireland’s
representatives at the World University Games in Gwangju ,
South Korea.last week. Japan won the Gold medal, France
picked up the Silver and the Bronze went to the Republic of
Korea. Ireland finished 8th out of 20 countries.
