Jason and his golf maintenance crew carry on with subtle improvements to
the course. Trees have been removed on #3 and behind #17. The crew is now
to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. We have much to give
thanks for and to praise at PGC – a terrific golf course, a beautiful clubhouse

the years. The recent rains confirmed these problems, and the greens crew is
working on changing the contour of the 8th green shoulders to correct these
issues. Completing Greenshield on holes #13, 14, 15 and 18 is high on the
priority list for 2017 CapEx expenses. With the dredging of Junor Lake this
year and the completion of Greenshield next year, the major projects for the
golf course will be completed.
The Board and committees are looking at other future needs. It has been
many years since the Pro Shop has had a remodel. Improving access and
display space would greatly enhance the Pro Shop. The entry circle needs
an upgrade visually and to better accommodate vehicular traffic. The upper
patio by the pool is an opportunity for a more usable and accessible outdoor
space. All of these projects require more study and input from members,
which will be on next year’s agenda.
While Greenshield and planning for future improvements to the Pro Shop
and landscape are visible and exciting projects, we are looking toward the
future to plan for less glamorous needs including security cameras and
IT improvements, which are behind the scenes necessities for a smoothly
running operation.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
BY ROGER AGGSON,
GENERAL MANAGER/COO
A Trailer, a Crane and
a Barge…Oh My!
The Junor Lake dredging project is underway. The goal of this project is to remove
sediment from the lake to maintain our water rights. The last time this was necessary was
in the 80’s. To appreciate the humor and nail biting excitement of this project it helps if
you’ve seen the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin.
That’s what came to mind for me as we were coordinating the arrival of the equipment—
and experiencing repeated delays getting the barge here and most importantly, getting it
into the lake. Oh my! Thankfully at no time did I, or anyone else for that matter, have to
yell out “You’re going the wrong way!” The photos of them putting the barge in the lake
helps illustrate the complexity of their task. It was a bit unnerving to watch. Thankfully
everything is now in place and is going better than expected. This is a complex process
and the dredging will continue through the end of the month. We will provide updates
throughout this process.
In addition to dredging the lake, Jason’s crew is working on drainage projects on a few
greens to move water off the greens to help them stay firm through the winter. This work
started on #8 green and will continue on holes #3 & 4. Future FORE’s will show work
on the other green complexes. Over the next few weeks we will also begin a variety of
winter projects. Many of these projects are “back of the house” projects and not seen by
members, such as cleaning and organizing F&B and bag room storage areas. One project
that you are sure to notice are the improvements to the indoor hitting studio. These
exciting improvements are being evaluated by the Green & Golf Committee. Once the
plans are finalized, the work will begin to make this a valuable venue to work on your
swing with our golf staff during the off season --before and after photos will be taken to
showcase this exciting project.
Thank you for your continued support in making PGC one of the best clubs in the
northwest. I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Course News
The rain started October 1st and looks like that
pattern will continue throughout the low season.
The precipitation level was double the average during
the month of October, with a record already set
accumulating between 6.5” at PGC and between 6”
and 7” in the Portland metro area.
The turf is still growing having yet to slow down
with temperatures still around 60 degrees on average.
This makes mowing challenging along with bunker
maintenance. The leaves are falling rapidly, adding
to the challenge.
Still our amazing crew continues to rise to these
challenges keeping the course playable while making
a few course improvements. The front right bunker on
hole #9 was modified along the back side of hole #8 to
provide easier access for the golfer and maintenance
equipment. This is an ongoing project with plans to
construct easier access to more bunkers throughout
the winter when the weather allows. Another winter
project is the repairing of collar dams. Collar dams
are the accumulation of top dressing sand at the front
of the green, impeding water from running off the
surface readily during periods of heavy rain. The collar
dam on the 8th green has been repaired along with
modifications to the front right and left bunkers.
Other collar dams needing repair this winter include
the 3rd, 4th and 6th greens.
It is early, but the course has become saturated after
record rainfall in October. Please adhere to any cart
path restrictions when asked. When entering onto the
turf from the path use as high as ground as possible
and avoid low areas where water tends to collect.
Please continue to repair ball marks, rake bunkers and
replace sand divots. Thank you!

Congratulations to Gretchen Johnson who recently won
the World Championship for Speedgolf held in Chicago,

and it is truly a wonderful golf course and
one that I would find

The Entertainment Committee did a fantastic job providing the Club with fun and well organized events
throughout the year, including the recent season ending party, Oktoberfest, organized by Ian and Julie

wine and great entertainment. This is definitely an event I would be sure not to miss next year!

PGConversations
by Paul Linnman
Member Jerry Cundari delighted a full house during the kickoff of our new
speaker series, PGConversations, sharing the experiences at the highest levels of
amateur golf which allowed him to rub shoulders (and trade birdies!) with the
game’s biggest names. (Jack Nicklaus introduced Jerry to Bobby Jones when they
were but junior golfers!) Jerry ultimately chose family life in Portland over the
pro tour — he actually tried to dissuade former PGA Champion Dave Stockton
from going pro when they were college players — and PGC members who enjoyed Jerry’s presentation are glad he chose to stay close to home!
Our next PGConversation is expected to be equally as compelling. The passing of
Arnold Palmer impacted everyone who loves the game of golf, especially members who know how much Mr. Palmer loved Portland Golf Club. November 30th
will be “Arnold Palmer” tribute night at PGC, with guest speakers David Jacobsen,
who served as Mr. Palmer’s longtime “host” whenever he visited Oregon, and Ron
Read of Monterey, CA, the USGA’s highest ranking executive on the West Coast,
who had a 40-year relationship with Arnold Palmer.
And, because virtually everyone who made contact with “The King” has a story
to tell, we’ll also save time on the program for PGC members to share their own
“best Arnold Palmer” stories.
Don’t miss what’s sure to be a memorable PGConversation, Wednesday, November
30th, at 6:30 PM. Registration is available online or by calling front desk personnel.

Ok----pilgrim, hold it right there, and when I say WHOA,
I mean WHOAH!! It’s November, we have a lot going on at
the Club, and you need to pay attention.
The highlight of the month is our Women’s Evening Member and Guests Holiday Event. It is a HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA on Tuesday evening, November
29, at 5pm. Our imaginative chairman, DANA CRESS,
has booked vendors such as Enchante Chocolates, Shop

Stationary that will satisfy the most discriminating shopper.
And the crème de la crème, a buffet dinner prepared by
Chef Eloy. Sounds like a great way to jump-start the holiday season!
Just announced, GRETCHEN JOHNSON came in No. 1
in the World Speed Golf competition held at a course just
outside Chicago. She played 19 holes in 57 minutes and
shot an even par 72. If you are out enjoying a relaxing day
of golf and hear a “beep beep”, step aside, it’s our own “road

The gals on TEAM this year finished off their last match in

down, and brought home the 1st PLACE TROPHY.
The final overall results for the POKÉMON Fall Tournament: low gross, EMILY HARNDEN and KELLY DOUGLAS, and low net, ELOISE CARSON and LAURIE WAGNER. The first round was a best ball - the second round a

have scheduled a “rain day” and haven’t needed it; it is sort
of like putting an umbrella in your golf bag when the skies
look iffy to keep the rain gods away.
