Your gift can change a life! A life changed in an instant. Larry startled awake, and in that moment of fright his blood pressure spiked and changed his life forever. He experienced a debilitating stroke. The stroke left Larry partially paralyzed, unable to walk or speak properly. Sadly, the stroke was just the beginning of difficulties ahead. Larry had no health insurance. When he was discharged from the hospital the only family he could look to for help in his rehabilitation was an older sister who was too infirm to care for him. “. . . Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!” What happens without insurance or family to help? Unfortunately, many people face the despair of homelessness because of medical problems. As a young man, Larry had run companies and was once the youngest vice president of the largest bank in Washington D.C. He knew financial comfort and ease. “ Because of the stroke, I had to learn to use my other hand . . . changing from right- handed to left- handed! ” In his mid-fifties, he was a successful professional photographer booked a year in advance. He enjoyed travel and seeing the United States. His business was thriving. But tragically he’d never gotten around to getting medical or disability insurance. Larry had also never married. He had been so focused on career and jobs that he had little time for family. The hospital bills wiped him out financially. His thriving photography business died. He couldn’t walk without a walker because of the stroke. His right arm was useless. He had trouble speaking. How could he provide for himself? How could he manage the rehabilitation necessary to get back on his feet? He had no family to help him. He was out of options. Luke 24:5-6 Larry was fortunate. Someone at the hospital suggested that he contact the Mission for help. Larry had to overcome his misconceptions about the Mission. He couldn’t imagine asking for help. But without any other choice he gave the Mission a chance. “When I came to the Mission, I couldn’t walk. I was running into walls with my walker. I struggled. I had to learn to use my left hand instead of my right hand.” At the Mission, Larry found the help and support he needed to get better. He learned how to walk without the walker. He’s growing physically stronger everyday. Larry has also reconnected with God here at the Mission. What seemed like a life-ending tragedy wasn’t. What began as darkness has turned to light. Just like the Easter story, at a dark moment, Larry found light. Larry reflects on his time at the mission: “The Mission supports me. They’ve never let me down. I don’t even have the opportunity to feel sorry for myself.” Larry’s on his way to self-sufficiency. He’s walking with the help of only a cane. He’s adapting to the physical limitations he has. Larry’s a fixture in our vocational and training classes. He’s building his physical and his spiritual strength here at the Mission. When Larry thinks about the future he says, “Every day is a better day for me.” Join the conversation! Go to www.facebook.com/RaleighRescue to keep up with the latest news, needs and prayer requests. PROVIDES FOR HOMELESS MOTHERS AND CHILDREN! Homelessness is heartbreaking but the plight of homeless mothers and children is painful beyond words. To help meet the needs of Raleigh’s most needy women and children, the Hearts of Hope Benefit Luncheon will be held on Friday, March 23, at the Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel. Proceeds from this special women’s event will provide care and services for homeless mothers and children. It all starts with nutritious food and safe shelter so they don’t have to worry about where to sleep. But that is not all, once basic needs are met, women can work on building a better future through life-skills and job training. THANKS TO YOU, NEIGHBORS LIKE LARRY HAVE THE CHANCE TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT. Easter I love the Easter story. I love the miracle of the Resurrection — “Jesus’ death-to-life.” Easter is so powerful for desperate neighbors who have nowhere to turn. They need the miracle of transformation. I see people whose lives are broken because of their own poor choices. I see others, like Larry, whose story we featured in this newsletter, who have had difficult financial setbacks. I see children, who haven’t done anything wrong, but are living in desperate straights. “Your support brings the miracle of Easter to needy neighbors!” In the midst of suffering, pain and hopelessness all are seeking hope for a new life. Hope for a changed life. Hope that things can be better. Your support brings the miracle of Easter to needy neighbors…not just on the one day we celebrate Easter, but every day. Easter changed history forever. God’s work through your support of the Mission is changing history for desperate men, women and children, as well. From pain and sadness God brings joy and hope. You are part of His work of bringing the miracle of Easter to your needy neighbors every day. Lynn Daniell Executive Director For the kids, the Children’s Development Center provides state-certified daycare and preschool education, yet with a focus on Jesus. Because their children are receiving topnotch care, the moms have time for school and career training. And of course, all our residents spend time growing in their faith — learning how the power of Easter is active in their own lives today. The Hearts of Hope Benefit Luncheon is a special time when women from our community come together to provide support for homeless mothers and children.
