National Take a Stand Festival Kickoff: Information Session
[Emerald Ballroom]
The symposium days are designed to encourage attendees to wrestle with the idea of
“Raising the Bar:” elevating expectations of what educators set out to accomplish for
and with students in nucleos and as a field. This idea of Raising the Bar across the
landscape of El Sistema-inspired programs – both socially and musically – is at the core
of the National Take a Stand Festival and its goals.
During this session, the Take a Stand team will provide an overview of the symposium
as well as the National Take a Stand Festival, a project that starts with your
participation at the symposium, and continues with regional gatherings of students (at
Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, and at Bard College in Upstate NY) in the
summer of 2016, and a national gathering of students (in Los Angeles, CA) in summer
2017. With your engagement at this symposium, you will ensure that the National Take
a Stand Festival reflects the ideas, needs, and philosophies of the entire field.

Breakout Information Sessions
Two concurrent sessions – one led by Aspen Music Festival and School Vice President
and General Manager Dan Song and one led by President of Longy School of Music
Karen Zorn– will allow attendees to dig deeper into the specific logistical elements of
the Summer 2016 regional gatherings.

Raising the Bar: Facilitated Discussion Groups – Round 1
These discussion groups, inspired by the goals of the National Take a Stand Festival,
will recur later in the day (from 1:15-3:15pm).
[A]
Crafting a Vision for Social Excellence
[Roman]
As programs look past the founding stage and into longer-term program
maturity, what does social excellence look like for students in El Sistemainspired programs? How can regional and national gatherings help support
those nucleo-level goals?
[B]
Reaching New Levels of Musical Excellence
[Corinthian]
What does musical excellence look like in an El Sistema-inspired program, and
what are the roadblocks practitioners run into as they strive to enable the
highest levels of musicianship in individual students and program-wide? How
can regional and national gatherings help support those nucleo-level musical
goals?
[C]
Defining Holistic Measures for Student Achievement
[Athenian]
Pre-existing models for assessing music students often focus only on students’
musical aptitude, ignoring the social elements that might further inform student
growth. In El-Sistema-inspired programs, where musical aptitude and social
growth are valued hand-in-hand, how can we assess excellence in a way that
values the whole student? How can the selection processes for the National
Take a Stand Festival best reflect field-wide values?
Lunch [not provided]
