Deepa’s Trip to her Pace School
Deepa traveled at
the end of last year
to India. She went to
her Pace school,
which she started in
Piyali Junction, to
help lay the Educational Corner Stone
for the beginning of
the new school.
While there the students put on a ceremony to honor her.
Deepa we are so
proud of you for taking an idea and turning it into reality. You are truly changing the
face of poverty, by educating the girl child of India!
WOW!

Oaxaca Trip Planned for November 2010
OAXACA, MEXICO 2010
The Santa Ynez Valley Rotary Club is once again sponsoring a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico to help build chicken coops in the poor villages outside of Oaxaca. There are
many of these villages where the people have built small simple homes for themselves, usually 200 square feet or less. This will be the 7th humanitarian trip that the
SYV Rotary has sponsored to this area. Rotary works with Medical Teams International, a Portland, Oregon based non-profit organization, which has an office in Oaxaca and makes all of our local travel and lodging arrangements.
We will spend the week building 10 chicken
coops for 10 poor families, and provide each
family with 13 chickens for their coops. These
chicken coops will provide a renewable source
of food for the ten families, and in addition, as
the chickens reproduce, the families can sell
eggs. This provides them with a small business that can supplement their other income
of usually about $2/day. This project provides
a very important step for these poor families in
their attempt to lift themselves out of the cycle
of poverty.

Oaxaca Trip Planned for November 2010
Usually we meet for breakfast at 8 AM each day. Medical Teams International personnel will pick us up at the hotel at 9 AM and take us to the work site. We build two
chicken coops and finish by mid afternoon. On the way back to the hotel, we can visit
villages noted for woodcarving, rugs, weaving, pottery, etc. and buy handicrafts from
the area. After a shower, relaxation, etc., we get together again at 6 PM to visit one of
the many fine restaurants in Oaxaca for dinner, margaritas and Mariachi music.
Trip Itinerary
Friday Evening, November 12 - OAXACA
Depart Santa Barbara airport for Oaxaca, Mexico. Arrive in Oaxaca in the morning, and check
into the Hotel Trebol which is located just off the
central square (Zocolo).
Saturday & Sunday November 13, 14
Two free days to explore Oaxaca, Mexico for
sightseeing or shopping, or visit the many nearby
Mixtec ruins such as Monte Alban or Mitla.
Monday, November 15 through Thursday, November 18
Help build 10 chicken coops in villages near Oaxaca. We will have local helpers to
assist with any heavy work. Typically we also have lots of local families and villagers
helping, and it is very rewarding to work with the local people who are very appreciative of the work that we do there. Our jobs involve simple measuring, cutting lumber
nailing, etc. We have lots of local help, and each Rotarian is asked to help with jobs
that are easily performed according to his or her skills. There is no heavy lifting nor is
there any construction experience required.

Oaxaca Trip Planned for November 2010
Friday, November 19 – HUATULCO
Depart Oaxaca for the flight to Huatulco, a new tropical beach resort on the pacific
coast, for a little “rest and relaxation”. We will stay at the Casa Del Mar Hotel which is
located on a cliff overlooking a Huatulco Bay. Due to the humanitarian nature of our
trip, we have special team rates at this luxury hotel of approximately $90 per night (a
real bargain).
Casa del Mar Hotel - Huatulco, Mexico
Casa del Mar Hotel - Huatulco, Mexico
Saturday, November 20 & Sunday November 21
We will visit the Huatulco area including the town, the market and beaches. On one
day we can possibly make a trip along the coast to Puerto Escondido which is another
seaside resort along the “Mexican Riviera”.
Monday, November 22
Depart Huatulco for the return flight to Santa Barbara.
The estimated cost of this trip is approximately $1,200.
For more information, call Bob Hinnrichs at (805) 686-1605.
Currently, we have six people signed up. It is on a first come first served basis and
we have room for four more. If you have an interest please let Bob know. This will be
our last trip to Oaxaca!
