Student - Parent Handbook 2016 - 2017

Committed to Achieving Excellence
Excellence is the result of caring more than others think is
wise, risking more than others think is safe, dreaming more
than others think is practical, and expecting more than others
think is possible.
Student - Parent Handbook
2016 - 2017
We Succeed-No Excuses-No Exceptions
Mission Statement
We collaborate with parents/guardians to create a nurturing and orderly learning environment while
providing a challenging academic program of study with a strong focus on character development.
Character Development is modeled and integrated into every aspect of the school day. Helping
students become better sons and daughters, citizens, leaders, and friends is essential for our communities
and nation to prosper. We must raise students to be good as well as smart.
Academic Achievement is centered on individualized student learning. Therefore, we use same
student learning gains to assess how much each student learns during the school year.
Shared values are at the heart of who we want to be. Three particular values guide our work as an
organization: Integrity. Justice. Fun.
Integrity means wholeness, or how things fit together. In the school setting, it means that we must
balance the teaching and modeling of character development and academic achievement. Integrity drives
us to live the same values outside the school as we do inside. Of course, it also means living up to our
commitments to students, parents, and the local community. Integrity requires freedom mixed with
responsibility and accountability.
Justice means to each person what he or she deserves and to each person what is appropriate. Since
each student, employee, parent, and organization with whom we interact is unique, each must receive
special treatment. Justice does not mean sameness or equality, but that everyone is treated uniquely and
appropriately. This value drives our approach to individualized education. There are no “standardized”
students.
Fun means Imagine Schools strives to create the most fun and successful schools possible.
The fun value requires extraordinary decentralization of decision-making, which empowers teachers, staff,
and students to create a joy-filled school. Imagine Schools believes that each person was born to use his
mind, heart, and skills to take actions, make decisions, and be held responsible for the results. Creating an
environment where all stakeholders participate in educational, economic, and administrative decisions and
take responsibility for the results is key to having an effective and enjoyable school that strives to meet the
needs of its unique community and student body.
All Imagine Schools are committed to accountability and constant improvement. Our Six Measures of
Excellence are the yardsticks we use to evaluate our effectiveness in six equally important areas of school
quality: parent choice and satisfaction, adherence to shared values, academic achievement, positive
character development, economic sustainability, and new school development.
Vision Statement
We believe that every child can and will succeed in their pursuit of a quality education.

Attendance Guidelines and Procedure
One of the strongest foundations for school success is regular school
attendance.
Compulsory School Attendance
1. Attendance: Florida Law requires all children from ages six to sixteen years of age to attend
school.
2. Parent Responsibility
A. Florida Statutes, 1003.24 clearly defines the responsibility of parents for the attendance of
their child at school and requires them to provide an explanation for any absence from
school. It is the intent of the school to hold parents responsible for their child’s attendance
to the extent provided by law.
1. Any time a student returns to school after an absence, a note MUST be brought
from home within five days of his/her return.
a. Acceptable excuses for student’s absences: Sickness, Injury, a death
in the family, religious holiday, a school-sponsored event, a
previously approved activity or Other Insurmountable condition.
b. Attendance was impracticable or inadvisable due to sickness or injury,
attested by a written statement of a licensed practicing physician, or
was impracticable because of some other stated insurmountable condition
as defined by rules of the State Board of Education.
c. Excuse notes will only be accepted by the student’s homeroom teacher
upon his/her return to school.
1. Excuse notes may not be accepted at the END of the school
year for an absence that occurred previously in the year.
4
d. Although the school does not support students missing school for vacation
purposes, any student missing school for vacation must notify the
administration.
1. Notification MUST be made in writing at least two weeks in
advance so teachers can have the appropriate work ready for the
student.
B. If, during the course of the school year, a student has unauthorized absences sufficient
enough to jeopardize academic progress, in accordance with F.S. 1003.24, the procedures
under Florida Statues 984.151, 1003.26, and 1003.27 shall be followed by the appropriate
school personnel.
3. Excused and Unexcused Absences: Absence is defined as nonattendance of a student at school
or in an approved educational activity/field trip or program on days school is in session. A student
not physically present at school or not participating in an approved school activity shall be counted
absent and shall not be recorded as in attendance on that day.
A. The law allows for absences for illness or medical care, death in the family, religious
holidays, prearranged absences for educational purposes approved by an administrator,
financial and certain other special circumstances or insurmountable conditions. Under these
circumstances school policy regards these absences as excused absences. Request for
Excused Absence forms are located on the school website: www.myiser.com
B. An unexcused absence takes place any time a child is out of school for reasons not
recognized by law. Unexcused absenteeism sufficient enough to jeopardize academic
progress at the elementary level is defined as a student being absent without an
acceptable reason five (5) times in a calendar month or ten (10) times in a 90calendar day period.
1. Determination of whether an absence is excused or unexcused is the responsibility
of the local school principal or designee.
C. Any time a student returns to school after an absence, a note MUST be brought from home.
The student’s homeroom teacher upon his or her return to school will accept a doctor’s
note. Doctor’s notes will not be accepted at the END of the school year for an absence that
occurred previously in the year. If you need to take your child out of school before the end
of the school day, come to the school office and sign him/her out and a school employee
will send for your child. Students will not be dismissed from the classroom to the
parent. No early dismissals will be permitted after 2:30 p.m. for any students.
4. Tardiness
A. Tardiness is defined as any arrival at school after posted start time without an approved
excuse. Tardiness and leaving early without an acceptable excuse, for the purpose of this
policy, are seen in violation of 1003.21, F.S. (Compulsory attendance statues) Students
who are chronically tardy or leave early without acceptable excuses more than five (5)
times in a calendar month or ten (10) times in a 90 calendar day period will be
subjected to action as dictated by 1003.27, F.S. Students are permitted to enter the
classrooms at 7:45 a.m. Students will be considered tardy if they are not in their classroom
by 8:00 a.m.
B. A student that enters a classroom with a late pass is considered tardy. A student that enters
the building before 7:45 a.m. but reports to the classroom after 8:00 a.m. without a pass will
be marked tardy by the classroom teacher and will be logged by the school office
personnel.
C. Excused tardies are given for doctor’s appointments with notes from a doctor. A doctor’s
note must be presented at the time of arrival to receive an excused tardy.
5
D. Determination of whether a tardy is excused or unexcused is the responsibility of the school
principal or designee.
E. If it is determined that the parent is responsible for the cause of the chronic tardiness or
leaving early without an acceptable excuse, then 1003.27 (2), F.S. shall be used to gain
compliance.
5. Truancy
A. It is the responsibility of the student’s parents to notify the school when their child will not be
in attendance. While a student is enrolled in elementary or middle school, the school shall
be notified the day the student returns to school from an absence of one (1), two (2) or
three (3) days.
B. For the purpose of these regulations, a “truant “is one who is not in attendance, with or
without approval of the parent or other person having charge of the student, and whose
absence has not been excused.
C. A habitual truant is a student whom has fifteen (15) unexcused absences within ninety (90)
calendar days with or without the knowledge or consent of the student’s parent or legal
guardian.
6. Make up work
A. Students who have been absent and are excused are given the privilege of making up
work. The length of time within which work may be made up shall be determined by the
extent and nature of the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain and complete
all makeup work.
7. Other considerations
A. Students attending a curriculum related educational field trip sponsored by the school and
chaperoned by school personnel or a function, as an administratively recognized
representative of the school shall be considered in legal school attendance.
B. Students who are absent for an “educationally valuable experience” other than a field trip or
school sponsored function or activity may receive an excused absence if the following
criteria are met.
1. A written request, identifying the educational benefits, must be submitted by the
parent/guardian.
2. The absence must be pre-approved at least two weeks in advance by the principal
or designee.
3. Students are responsible for work missed during this absence.
C. Students who are suspended or prohibited from attending school due to failure to meet
immunization requirements shall be considered administratively absent and considered
excused.
Student Progression Plan
Imagine School at Evening Rose follows the Student Progression Plan requirements and procedures
outlined by the Leon County Schools District.
Agenda/Notebook System
In an effort for teachers to communicate effectively with parents, teachers will use agendas on a daily basis.
Each student will be required to purchase an agenda from the school. The cost of the agenda is $5.00 and
any replacement agendas will incur the same charge.
6
Agendas are used as a means to keep parents informed on a daily basis. Students will use the agenda to
log in their home learning assignments. The agenda must be signed each night by a parent to ensure that
home learning has been completed and all communication has been seen. If a student misplaces an
agenda, he/she will be required to purchase another one from the school leadership office the morning of
the next school day.
**It is the student’s responsibility to record information in their agenda and bring it to and from
school daily.
Arrival
Student drop off is from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. All students dropped off before 7:30 a.m. will be placed in
Before School Care and charged the daily rate of $5.00.
Students that are walked to class by parents are encouraged to say goodbye at the classroom door.
Parents should remain outside the classroom so each child may begin the day independently. At 7:30 a.m.,
teachers are responsible for morning duty followed by care and instruction of their students; therefore,
teachers are not able to participate in any parent/teacher conferences during this time. Teachers are
instructed to maintain focus on the care and safety of all their students and to begin instruction promptly at
8:00. Parent/Teacher conferences are encouraged however we do request that an appointment is
scheduled with the teacher outside of their student contact hours (7:30 – 3:30).
In the event a student is arriving late to class, students should not be left unattended at the front of either
building. Parents MUST park their car and walk children into the building and sign them in. The safety of
our children is our first priority!
Before School Care
Before School care is a service ISER provides for all parents for an additional monthly fee. Fees are
payable on the same fee dates as after school care as listed below. Students who will be attending the
Before School Care (BSC) program are expected to report directly to the cafeteria upon arrival. Students in
BSC will have time to review the previous day’s assignment. Breakfast will be available from 7:00 a.m. 7:45 a.m. and is included in the price of the BSC program. In the interest of safety, we request that you
personally bring your child to the cafeteria and sign them in.
No students will be permitted to enter the building before 7:00 a.m.
After School Care
The after school care program is a service we provide for parents of students in grades K-6 for a monthly
fee. Students are provided with a snack during after school care. The after school care program begins
immediately when school ends until 6:00 p.m. After school care provides 30 minutes of home learning time
where students are to work on their home learning and/or read a book. At the conclusion of home learning,
students have time for outdoor play, games, and a variety of structured activities (clubs). Payments must be
made prior to the first day of the service period and will incur late fees after 3 days.

Dismissal (excerpt)
Students are not permitted on school grounds after dismissal unless enrolled in the After School Care
Program or other enrichment programs that are offered at ISER.
Only individuals listed on the EMERGENCY CONTACT card will be allowed to pick-up students from the
school. Valid photo identification will be required of all individuals’ picking-up students. If someone arrives at
the school to seek the release of a student and the person's name is not on the emergency contact card
and/or the person does not have valid photo identification, the student will not be released.
8
ISER would like to avoid an escalation in personal family conflicts, therefore parents or guardians should
submit a copy of any legal documents indicating the party that has legal access to the child and his/her
records during school hours to the Office of Student Services. In the absence of legal documentation, ISER
personnel will provide access only to those individuals whose names appear on the student's data card. In
addition, failure to provide legal documentation outlining visitation rights will result in any parent listed on the
birth certificate as permissible to pick up the listed student.
All parents must remain outside the school perimeter at dismissal time. Teachers will bring the students to
the designated area for pick- up or for bus transportation. Please follow our procedures for dismissal to
ensure the safety of students. Parents are not permitted to use the back or side gated fence for entering or
leaving the school building. Please do not line your cars up for dismissal prior to 2:45 p.m. It is important
that we do not block traffic or patrons trying to get in and out of the community. Please review the Regular
Dismissal Traffic pattern as well as the Rainy Day Dismissal procedures posted on the web site.
During dismissal, teachers are instructed to maintain focus on the care and safety of each student. It is
important to not only dismiss students in an expeditious manner but to also ensure students are in their
appropriate location for afternoon dismissal. Therefore, teachers are not able to participate in any
parent/teacher conferences during this time. Parent/Teacher conferences are encouraged however we do
request that an appointment is scheduled with the teacher outside of their student contact hours (7:30 –
3:30).
If a change to your child’s dismissal plan is required, please fax information with a copy of your Florida
Driver’s License and signature to the school office at 850- 877-6463 before 1:30 p.m.
Students not picked up on time will be placed in the After Care Program and be charged according to the
Late Fee Schedule below:
The Late Fee Schedule below will be strictly enforced as teachers have other commitments and/or
meeting requirements:
3:31 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. $15.00
3:46 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. $20.00
4:01 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. $25.00
4:16 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. $30.00
Early Dismissal
Any student leaving school prior to dismissal will have an early dismissal logged to his/her record. Excused
early dismissals are given for doctor’s appointments with an accompanying physician note. Please submit
the excused physician note to the Office of the Registrar in a timely manner. If an early dismissal is required
for a student, the parent/guardian must come to the school office and sign him/her out. Students will not be
dismissed from the classroom to a parent. Parents will be expected to sign their child out in the sign-out log
and wait patiently for their child to come to the main office.
No early dismissals will be permitted after 2:30 p.m. for any students.
Transportation
In an effort to assist the bus with maintaining adherence to the bus schedule, please be present at your
child’s designated stop at least 10 minutes early. If you are running late refrain from running after the
moving bus but rather meet the bus at the next scheduled stop.
Students residing within a two (2) mile radius of the school will be expected to furnish their own
transportation. Students living outside the two miles radius will be eligible for transportation to and from a
9
designated depot bus stop. Please keep in mind depot stops are drop off and pick up locations located
within business and/or community areas. Therefore, it is imperative that parents arrive on time to pick up
students from their designated drop off location to avoid unsupervised students left in public areas.
School Bus Rules
The student's responsibility begins at the bus stop in the morning and ends at that stop in the afternoon. If a
student walks or is a car rider their responsibility begins and ends when they enter and leave our campus.
Students are expected to follow all of the guidelines as well as the rules prescribed by the district for student
safety on campus and on the buses. Please read all bus rules and abide by those at all times when traveling
on a bus.
1. Be respectful of the driver and others riding the bus.
2. Be on time and stand off to the side while waiting for the bus
3. When crossing the roadway and or/parking lot, be sure that the road is clear of traffic in both
directions--do not depend entirely on the bus stop arm.
4. If the bus is equipped with belts, wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt at all times.
5. No eating, chewing gum, or drinking on the bus.
6. Remain in the seat at all times until departure at an assigned stop.
7. Use ordinary quiet conversation (quiet voices) and classroom conduct. There is to be no screaming
nor shouting across the bus.
8. Do not talk to or distract the driver while the bus is in operation.
9. Refrain from foul language or racial slurs.
10. Keep hands, feet, arms and head to yourself and inside windows at all times.
11. Do not throw waste paper or other rubbish on the floor or otherwise litter, mark, deface, or damage
any part of the bus.
12. Do not throw objects from the bus. Your parents will be charged for any damage you do.
13. Do not throw objects in the bus. This causes a distraction to the driver.
14. Do not tamper with the emergency exit and do not use it for ordinary boarding.
Items prohibited on the school bus are: gum chewing, eating, drinking, or smoking; animals or pets; small
objects or toys that are loose and that could get underfoot and cause passengers to trip or fall; and band
instruments, projects and athletic equipment larger than that which can be held by the student or secured so
that they do not constitute a hazard.
Consequences of Bus Violations
A bus driver can make a written referral to the school leadership team about a student's behavior on the
bus. Each referral, and subsequent referral, has specific consequences. Bus drivers also may issue verbal
warnings for minor offenses which are recorded in the driver's log.

Bus Evacuation
There will be a mandatory bus evacuation drill held twice a year, one per semester. Students will learn to
evacuate the bus in an efficient and safe manner. This is an educational training session which
demonstrates what students will do in case of an emergency. This safety process will be supervised by the
School Leader or the School Leader’s designee.
Late Buses
Parents should be prepared for possible changes in their routes which include but are not limited to;
detours, bus breakdowns, substitute drivers, additions or deletions of bus stops. Any of these items could
result in a fluctuation of pick-up or drop-off times and/or a change of bus route. Please contact the school
leadership office for questions or concerns involving a late bus.
Entering the school bus
Parents are only authorized to enter and ride a school bus when they are chaperoning a school-sponsored
field trip. If parents have questions or concerns they would like to discuss with the school bus driver, they
are encouraged to schedule an appointment. School bus drivers are not permitted to hold conversations at
bus stops as this can create a dangerous situation, takes the drivers' attention away from the safety of the
students, and causes a delay in the driver’s schedule.
Van
Parents may elect to send their children to an afterschool childcare facility in the area that offers a pickup
service for the student. Parents must complete the Afterschool Childcare Pickup Agreement in its entirety
prior to students being released to that facility. It is imperative that the facility complies with the School’s
student pickup timelines and signs the pickup agreement. The transportation service should arrive by 3:00
pm but no later than 3:15 pm ~ NO EXCEPTIONS. After 3:15 pm the student will be charged a $15.00 drop
in fee per student from Imagine School at Evening Rose Extended Day Program. On early dismissal days,
the transportation service should arrive by 12:00 pm but no later than 12:15 pm ~ NO EXCEPTIONS. On
the last day of school the transportation service will incur fees as described below:
12:15 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. $15.00
12:31 p.m. - 12:45 p.m. $20.00
12:46 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. $25.00
1:01 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. $30.00
Transportation services that are habitually late (exceeding 3 times in a 9-week period) and/or do not remit
fees to the Imagine School at Evening Rose Extended Day Program (due upon receipt) will not be permitted
to continue picking up students. Parents will be asked to seek out another facility that will abide by the
Afterschool Childcare Pickup Agreement or place their student in the Imagine School at Evening Rose
Extended Day Program.
11
Telephone
The school has a business telephone to help transact the business of the school. Therefore, these lines
must be kept open. Students should not make or receive calls at any time. This means students should not
call home for lunch, field trip money or any other reason. School phones are available for emergencies. If an
emergency arises, school personnel will contact parents and/or guardians. Students are not allowed to
have personal cell phones on during the school day.
Birthday Celebrations
th
Students are welcome to celebrate their birthday at school in K through 6 grade. Individual snacks
(cupcakes, cookies, etc.) and a drink may be brought to school to share with your child’s homeroom at the
conclusion of lunch. These items may only be consumed at the picnic tables outside of the cafeteria.
Arrangements must be made in advance with the classroom teacher. No party bags, balloons, decorations,
etc. are permitted. Siblings may not attend these celebrations, as it may be disruptive to his/her classroom
as well as another classroom’s environment.
Lunch Program
ISER participates in the National School Lunch Program and our food service program is developed through
our partnership with SLA Management. Breakfast will offer students a weekly rotation which may include;
bagels and cream cheese, a cheese omelet, cereal and toast, French toast and/or yogurt and toast.
Students will receive a freshly prepared hot lunch with the choice of ala carte items for an additional cost.
As a participant of the National School Lunch Program, ISER is able to provide free and reduced lunch to
student families that qualify under NSLP. This year the school is participating in a CEP grant that allows us
to provide free breakfast and lunch for all of our students. Parents are asked to complete a free and reduced
lunch application for their student(s). Only one application per household is required. Parents must renew
this application each year.
Nut and Food Allergy Policy
Imagine School at Evening Rose will provide a table in the cafeteria for students that may have nut allergies.
We encourage students and staff to refrain from sharing food products as this practice may be harmful to
students who are sensitive to certain foods. Please notify the school leadership team if your student(s) has a
known nut or food allergy.

Communication
Communication is absolutely essential for success in any human endeavor. ISER recognizes the
importance of partnering with parents and understands this effort begins with effective communication. In
addition to the report cards and conferences, K-3 student work will be sent home along with communication
from your child’s teacher via his/her student agenda. Parent(s)/guardian(s) are encouraged to sign and then
return the agenda the following day.
Students in grades 4-6 will receive their completed work from their teachers on a regular basis. Students are
expected to share their returned work with parents.
Student progress reports will be sent home mid-quarter for parental review with their child. ISER requests
that parents sign and return student progress reports the following day.
Jupitergrades is our online communication/grading system. Please take the time to set up your parent
access and keep contact information up-to-date throughout the year. Jupitergrades will be updated in a
timely manner in order to assist parents in keeping informed of their student’s progress. Login information
will be sent home the first week of school.
Please feel free to consult with the school leadership office regarding any questions or concerns involving
your student. However, it is imperative you speak with your child’s teacher first for classroom concerns. It is
the desire of the school leadership team as well as Imagine teachers and staff to be of service to both
parent and student. Every teacher welcomes a conference with any parent and welcomes the opportunity to
partner and resolve any questions or concerns that may arise.
Website
In accordance with our continued effort to reduce paper usage, ISER has a school website,
www.myiser.com. Newsletters and non-emergency information as well as links to individual teacher
websites are also available on the school website. If you do not have Internet access, please inform your
child’s teacher so that he/she can send home the necessary information. Thank you in advance for your
support of our effort to use less paper.





To help students develop self-respect
To help students develop respect for others and their property
To help students see the need for self-discipline
To guide students toward choices which lead to improved behavior
Teachers
The basis of the school discipline policy is respect for the individual person. Discipline with dignity is
required by all teachers. A preventative approach to discipline communicates to students that the focus of
the school discipline is to promote success and not to inflict punishment. Infractions where prevention is a
must include but are not limited to: behaviors observed in the classroom such as talking, extraneous
noises, inappropriate comments, name calling, not following teacher directions, and breaking classroom
rules.
School Leadership
The School Leadership Team has a shared responsibility for contributing to the maintenance of an
educational environment conducive to teaching and learning. This orderly learning environment with high
expectations provide for the total growth, development, and maturation of all students physically, mentally,

Parents
The ISER school leadership team, faculty, staff and ISER parent(s)/guardian(s) have a shared responsibility
for assisting in the total growth, development, and maturation of all students. Parents are expected to be
involved in the educational and social experiences of their children. Parents who attend parent/teacher
conferences and extra-curricular activities form a partnership with the school and the students. This
partnership enhances the quality of a child’s learning experience.
The parent must assume responsibility for the student’s regular attendance in school. Regular, consistent
school attendance is vital to a student’s academic program. Parents are encouraged to visit the school any
time during the year. Parents may call the school to schedule a conference with the student’s teachers
during their planning period or afterschool. The School Leader, Assistant to Principal, Character Coach
and/or designee are available as their daily schedules permit. In order for every student to have the
opportunity to reach his or her potential, each parent at Imagine School at Evening Rose shall:

Sign a parent contract outlining the following:
o Ensure their child arrives to school on time according to the school attendance policy
o Ensure their child arrives to school in uniform and adheres to the ISER dress code policy
o Attend mandatory parent-teacher conferences
o Respect and support the school staff concerning school safety, events, and instructional
programs
o Participate in ISER programs and literacy activities

Discipline Procedure
Discipline is the process of changing a student’s behavior from inappropriate to exemplary. ISER is never
satisfied with merely ceasing poor behavior; we desire to develop the student’s personal character in a
manner in which the student intrinsically desires to do make the appropriate choice. Though few students
desire discipline, they often need discipline in order to reach their full potential. Each teacher will establish
appropriate procedures for discipline in his/her classroom based on these guidelines.
Step 1: Warning and gentle reminder of desired behavior
Step 2: Student redirection and/or classroom modification
Step 3: Phone call home (parental calls are informational, i.e. description of student behavior)
Step 4: Student detention (student detention may be lunch, and/or afternoon)
Step 5: Teacher-initiated and documented parent conference to discuss behavioral concerns.
Step 6: Meeting with Character Coach and/or School Leadership team to assess the student’s
behavior and determine any non-punitive interventions that may be able to provide
positive incentive for the student in order for him/her to be successful.
Step 7: Teacher implementation of the individualized positive behavior plan outlined in Step 6.
Step 8: Office referral
17
ISER school leadership team adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the Leon County
Schools Discipline Plan.
The school leadership team reserves the right to assign and alter consequences at
Imagine Schools Evening Rose Campus as deemed appropriate.
Students’ Rights:
Students have a right to:
 An education appropriate to their needs;
 A positive learning climate free of disruption;
 A copy of clearly defined rules of student conduct, and to have these rules enforced fairly, without
discrimination;
 Express their viewpoints in appropriate ways;
 Print and distribute publications within the guidelines provided by the school;
 Meet together in accordance with school rules and scheduled use of facilities;
 Privacy of their personal possessions;
 Prior notification of any general search of their book bags or lockers;
 Participate in all eligible school programs and activities;
 Be provided due process in all instances requiring disciplinary actions or the exercise of their rights;
 Attend a school where all students and adults are treated equitably without regard to race, color,
religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, perceived disability, or
record of disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act; and
 Participate and learn in an environment free from sexual and other harassment
Dress Code:
A higher standard of dress encourages greater respect for individuals, students, and others and results in a
higher standard of behavior. Our dress code guidelines indicate appropriate school uniform during normal
school days, and during the afterschool program. Every student in attendance is expected to follow these
guidelines and shall wear the ISER official school uniform from approved vendors. Our dress code guideline
allows for reasonable accommodations based on a student's religion, disability or medical condition.
In addition, ISER reserves the right to interpret these guidelines and/or amend these guidelines during the
school year.
ISER suggests and strongly urges students to always be personally clean, and appropriately dressed and
groomed. In terms of appropriateness, health considerations should be given for wearing the kind of clothing
suitable for our air conditioned environment as well as those times of day when students are outside on our
hot and sunny playground areas. Students are encouraged to wear a uniform approved sweater, jacket or
sweatshirt in the classroom if they get cold and remove his/her outerwear before going outside on hot and
sunny days. Students are also encouraged to bring and apply sunscreen during physical education class as
well as any other activities that would require students’ prolonged exposure in the sun.
Hair: Hair must be neat and clean with no unnatural colors. Students may not have hair hanging in their
face that obstructs their eyes. Hairstyles disruptive to the learning environment will not be permitted.
Ribbons or bows worn in the hair must be purple, yellow, or a natural hair color. Hats and bandanas are not
permitted unless there is a medical reason (please submit a physician note to the school leadership office).
18
Shoes: All students in K-6 are required to wear athletic/tennis shoes daily. Shoes should be simple in
color as to not draw attention to the feet. Color accents on the shoes are permitted; however they may not
be neon/fluorescent and contain characters, lights, wheels, or sounds. No boots may be worn
Shirts: All shirts must be tucked in and must have the ISER logo. Only solid black or white undershirts may
be worn under the uniform. K-6 students must wear the approved purple uniform polo shirt with an Imagine
logo.
Belts: All uniform slacks/shorts should be worn with a black belt. Kindergarten students are the only grade
level that is not required to wear a belt.
Slacks/Shorts: All uniform slacks/shorts must be black for all K-6 students. Uniform shorts may not be
shorter than a credit card above the knee.
Shorts, Skirts, Jumpers, and Skorts: All shorts, skirts, jumpers, and skorts must be black and no shorter
than a credit card above the knee. All jumpers must have the school logo on the left side of the chest.
Socks, Tights, Leggings: All students must wear socks, tights, or leggings that are solid black or white.
Winter Wear: Sweatshirts, sweaters and jackets must be black. The school logo is preferred on all jackets
but not required. Jackets not containing the school logo should be plain and not have any obvious brand
names, wording, or logos. Please label all jackets with the child’s first and last name.
Jewelry: No body piercing other than earrings. Earrings should be stud style only for safety purposes.
Excessive necklaces, bracelets, and rings will be collected by the faculty if it is deemed distractive to others.
General: No sports bands (wrist, head or ankle) or sports gloves may be worn at school. Students are
asked to practice and observe common rules of courtesy with everyone. At no time are students to wear
anything offensive, immodest or deemed inappropriate by the faculty. All clothing must be of a proper fit,
not excessively baggy or tight and worn appropriately.
All teachers are asked to explain the dress code to their students during the first week of school. All staff
members are expected to enforce the student dress code. If necessary, disciplinary action may be taken
to encourage compliance with the dress code policy. Noncompliance could result in suspension or
dismissal.
A student who is not in compliance with the uniform dress code will be disciplined in the following manner.
1. The first infraction will involve a dress code notation in Jupitergrades.
2. The second infraction will involve parental contact by phone. The parent will be asked to
immediately bring appropriate clothing in order for the student to be in compliance with the dress
code.
3. The third infraction will result in the student being issued an after school work detail.
4. The fourth infraction will result in the student receiving a 1-day suspension from school.
5. The fifth infraction will result in the student receiving a 3-day suspension from school. Before the
student is permitted to return to school following the 3-day suspension, the student and parent must
schedule a conference with a member of the administration team.
All uniforms must be purchased through an approved uniform vendor and embroidered with the proper
school logo. The approved uniform vendor is Clothesline located at 1369 E Lafayette St, Tallahassee, FL
32301. Uniforms that are altered for length (other than pant legs) will be considered a uniform violation.
Pants altered to make shorts with frayed ends and long sleeved shirts altered to make short sleeve shirts
are also considered a uniform violation.
19
Emergencies:
Illness: Although regular school attendance is of the utmost importance, students should not be sent to
school when they are ill. Students will be sent home if they have a temperature of 99 degrees or above.
Students will also be sent home if they are vomiting. Students must be free of fever and vomiting for 24
hours before returning to school.
If a student becomes ill during the school day and it appears that they would be best cared for at home, the
parent will be contacted. Due to limited facilities, we are unable to keep sick children for long periods of
time. School personnel must be notified of any student's chronic illness (i.e. asthma, diabetes, heart
conditions or seizures). This heightens awareness in case of an emergency.
Pediculosis (Head Lice):
Head lice are a normal part of school life, particularly in Florida. Head lice prefer clean, healthy heads and
the presence of head lice is not a reflection of poor hygiene. Please remember that head lice do not spread
illness nor are they life threatening. Parents will be contacted immediately for expeditious student pick up if
school personnel believe lice is in his/her hair. ISER has a No Nit Policy; therefore your child will be allowed
to return to school when the parent/legal guardian submits proof of treatment or medical certification. The
child will also need to be re-examined by the school leadership team upon his/her return to school in order
to validate no lice and no nits exist. (Fla. Statute: 1003.22, 1006.062, F.S.) In an effort to prevent an
outbreak of head lice, parents are asked to examine the hair of their children weekly.
Medication
Imagine School at Evening Rose follows the Leon County School’s medication policy. Below are key points
of the district medication policy:









Only medications that are medically necessary for school attendance will be accepted. Most
medications can be given at home.
Medication must be transported to and from school by the parent/guardian, not the child.
All medications must be within the expiration date. In addition, all medications must be in their
original packaging (i.e., prescription bottle from pharmacy or all manufacturer’s packaging including
outer carton with dosage information). This includes non-prescription medication as well.
Medication and doses of medication must be age-appropriate. Some non-prescription medications
are not recommended for children. Check the box/bottle for this information.
Parents may not provide the school with a supply of medication “in case the medicine was forgotten
and not given at home”.
Please do not supply large quantities (i.e., no bottles of 100).
Medications containing aspirin (aspirin products, Pepto Bismol, etc.) will not be accepted without a
physician’s written order, due to the association with Reye Syndrome.
Only FDA-approved medications will be accepted. No vitamins, nutritional supplements, etc., will be
accepted without a written order from the physician.
The parent/guardian must complete a Medication Permission Form for each medication.
Emergency medications may require additional forms to be signed by the child’s physician. New forms must
be completed each school year.

Parents may not change the dose or time of administration of a prescription medication. A written
order from the physician or a new prescription bottle reflecting the change is required.
20



Students requiring over-the-counter (OTC) medicine for a temporary medical condition (i.e., cough
and cold medicines, pain relievers, allergy medicines, skin conditions, etc.), do not need a written
health care provider order for the first five (5) days of medicine administration, although the
Medication Permission Form shall be completed by the parent/guardian. If the non-prescription
medicine is needed for more than five (5) days, a written health care provider’s order is required.
Students who carry their own medication must have a Medication Permission Form and written
order from the physician on file in the school clinic.
Students who take medicine and who are going on an extended day/overnight field trip (i.e., a trip
that is longer than the school day) must have a separate permission form for each medication to be
given on the trip. A Medication Permission Form for extended day/overnight field trips must be
completed by the parent/guardian, even if the student is already receiving medication at school. A
separate supply of medication must be supplied by the parent for the trip. If asked, a pharmacist will
provide an extra labeled prescription bottle for this purpose.
The administering or dispensing of any medicines (including non-prescription medications) to students by
employees of Imagine without specific written authorization by the physician (prescription medication) and
parents of the student is forbidden. Please obtain the ISER Medication Permission form from administrative
receptionist. The medication will be kept in the administrative office reception area and will be administered
by office personnel. Students are not allowed to have any medication in their possession
Severe Weather Information
In case of a severe weather emergency, Imagine School at Evening Rose will follow the same instructions
as prescribed for Leon County Schools District. Parents should watch the local news for information about
school closings due to adverse weather conditions.
Emergency Evacuation
In preparation for the unexpected, ISER will conduct emergency drills to prepare students and staff for
adverse weather conditions, fire situations, school lockdowns and emergency evacuations. In the event of
an extreme circumstance that would require a building evacuation, all students and personnel will evacuate
to the adjacent building across the street. If an entire-school evacuation occurs, the local police will
determine the location. Under no circumstance will parents be allowed to pick up their child at school during
an evacuation period.
Please keep in mind that our priority in all emergency situations is to secure the safety of our students first
and foremost. Please wait patiently for the informative emergency “ALL CALL” from ISER that will follow
once all students and staff are safe and secure. The media is always helpful with disseminating information
regarding evacuations and procedures as well. Students will only be released to the people identified on the
emergency contact form. Please bring proper identification (a picture ID) when picking up your child.
Keeping this in mind, please notify the office immediately when there is a change in home phone numbers,
cellular numbers and emergency “ALL CALL” numbers.
Field Trips
Educational field trips may be planned for students at the discretion of their teacher or as a grade/subject
level. Although we may often view field trips as a requirement, planning and participation in field trips is a
privilege. Keeping this in mind, students serve as representatives of ISER; therefore, they may be excluded
from participation in any trip for reasons relating to academics, behavior/conduct and/or attendance.
21
Students receiving a suspension are not eligible to attend school sponsored events and activities during the
duration of their suspension. In addition students receiving a suspension and/or detention(s) may not attend
field trips as outlined on the field trip informational sheet. Any monies paid or donations given for school
sponsored events, activities or field trips will not be refunded/returned.
We encourage parent involvement by assisting teachers on field trips as chaperones. Parents serving in this
capacity may not have other children/siblings accompany them. Parent chaperones are required to have a
current volunteer form on file which is inclusive of a background check.
Students with fees owed to the school for Before Care and/or After Care program, the Media center, and
excessive lunch fees etc. will not be permitted to attend field trips until these fees are paid in full.
Parent permission must be granted for students to participate in field trips. Permission slips as well as
information regarding each field trip shall be sent home with the student at a minimum of 2-3 weeks prior to
the field trip date. Money and permission slips must be turned in according to the payment instructions
outlined. Payments not received by the designated deadline will forfeit students’ ability to attend the field
trip. Students without the proper uniform dress code will be required to remain at school.
Returned Checks
Returned checks to ISER are charged a $35.00 returned check fee. Payment for the returned check and the
$35.00 fee must be made within 7 days of notification from the school. Following the receipt of two returned
checks to the school, a family must submit all future payments via money order and/or cashier’s check. In
addition, students whose families do not submit payment in a timely manner for returned checks will lose
privileges to attend field trips and special events.
Home Learning Policy
The purpose of home learning is to develop study habits in students early in their academic lives. Home
learning is also used to reinforce concepts that have been taught during the school day and/or to work on
projects that have been assigned. Home learning should be completed independently. If a child does not
understand his/her assignment after trying to complete it at home, please send a note to the teacher
indicating the student’s area of concern.
Some days home learning assignments may take less or slightly more time than the previous day. Each
individual reading teacher will communicate with parents their specific reading log requirements.
Home learning assignments must be completed on time and properly written. The only acceptable excuse
for not completing home learning assignment is student illness and/or a written note stating an emergency,
which prevented home learning from being completed. If a student fails to bring in home learning, he/she
should complete it for the following day. Teachers keep daily records of home learning assignments, which
are used in determining quarterly grades.
All students will be required to write their assignments in their school agenda and parents are required to
sign the agenda each night as the agenda is a very important parent/teacher communication tool.
Parents may encourage student’s completion of home learning assignments in the following ways:
• Show an interest in your child’s work.
• Provide a place and time for quiet study.
• Assist in practicing with spelling words and number combinations.
• Encourage home reading and listen to your child read.
• Review the home learning for neatness and completeness.
• Please refrain from doing the work for your child.
• Discuss problems related to home study with your child’s teacher.
22
It is important to note that home learning is the responsibility of the student.
In addition, students will not be permitted to return to a classroom following dismissal to retrieve home
learning assignments and projects. This also includes students participating in the after-care program.
Extracurricular Activities
Students may have several opportunities to participate in enrichment clubs and extra-curricular activities for
an additional fee. Information regarding the activities offered; the days, time, and associated fees will be
sent home with the student. Participation in extracurricular activities and clubs that are offered is not
mandatory.

packing of his/her home learning and school supplies in the evening to avoid the last minute morning rush.
Ultimately, it is the student's responsibility to check and be sure that everything needed for the next day has
been packed.
23
Lost and Found
Throughout the school year items which have been lost are turned into the “Lost and Found”. Anytime a
student loses an item, he/she may go to the "Lost and Found" to claim it. There are many items lost and
never claimed each year. These items are donated monthly to various charitable institutions. Therefore,
please label your child’s personal belongings.
Parent Service Hours
Parents are required to have a minimum of 20 service hours per school year. Ten service hours should be
completed by January 13th. In order to volunteer in the classroom environment, please make prior
arrangement with the teacher so that instructional time is not lost. Parents are required to volunteer 20
hours per family or prorated to two hours a month if their children are accepted after school has begun. It is
suggested that a minimum of 2 hours of volunteer service be spent working on school fundraisers, special
activities, or lunchroom duty. Parents will receive volunteer time for attending workshops and general parent
meetings conducted in the school.
Parent Volunteer Hours: Volunteers are needed each day during lunch. Please feel free to come any
day between 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. to volunteer. If you are able to commit to a regular day and time
please consider this needed area for your required hours.
Visitors
Visitors, INCLUDING PARENTS, are NOT permitted to visit their child's class unannounced during school
hours as this is disruptive to the established class routine and instruction. For the safety and protection of all
students, visitors (including parents) must present a valid Florida Driver’s License, sign in and out in the
main building, state who they are visiting, state the purpose of the visit, and obtain a pass before proceeding
to a classroom. Cooperation with these student safety procedures will enable ISER to provide a safe and
orderly learning environment for all students.
Screenings
All kindergarten and third grade students are screened by the Leon County Health Department and/or the
ISER ESE department, for speech, hearing, and vision to rule out any possible impairment in these areas. In
addition, all sixth grade students are screened for scoliosis by the Leon County Health Department.
Grievance
Imagine School at Evening Rose is committed to resolving any questions and concerns that may arise. Our
teachers are always open and willing to communicate. Should you have a concern that has not been
resolved after meeting with the classroom teacher, the school leadership team is always available to meet
with parents and students to resolve concerns.
Please Note: Parents should never engage another student directly over any concern and should follow the
procedure outlined above.
School personnel are not required to suffer verbal or physical abuse by parents, students, or others. Two
Florida laws (Statute (12) 228.091 and Statute (2) 877.13) address the issue of verbally or physically
abusive parents, guardians, or other persons acting on behalf of a student. While such situations are rare, if
any parent is acting abusively they will be asked to leave the school; the school leader (principal) will followup in writing advising the parent that they are not welcome back into the school environment until their
behavior is deemed appropriate. If the parent returns and continues to be disruptive, law enforcement will
be called and asked to take appropriate action.
