“The safe evaluation of patients during labor
and delivery is the key to a successful obstetric
service at any institution, particularly when it
comes to high-risk pregnancies,” said WMH’s
Dr. Esgar Guarin. “The acquisition of a central
monitoring system will improve safety beyond
our current standards.”
The new ultrasound machine will give parents
the ability to view
the development of
their baby in threedimensional
images versus the
current twodimensional
capabilities,
increasing the
quality and
satisfaction of the
experience. The
ultrasound machine
also will be vital in
examining the
body’s internal
organs, including
the heart, liver,
gallbladder, spleen,
pancreas, kidneys,
and bladder.
Detecting pain,
swelling and
infection in these organs is the common practice
for the machine.
“We are an institution committed to high
standards of care,” Guarin said. “Up-to-date
diagnostic testing in the care of patients will keep
us at the high standard that the community
deserves and our parent health system expects.”
The “Equipped for the Future” Campaign is
already underway, and tax deductible
contributions may be mailed to the Wright

Why I Give...
“Our family was blessed with a
wonderful wife, mother and
grandmother. When she needed
the best of care, Wright Memorial
was there for her and for us. We
feel that by contributing to the
WMH Foundation, we are able to
pay tribute to a remarkable lady
and to a marvelous health care
facility. Our family is honored to
provide both a sitting area and
benches for others to enjoy and we
know that Linda Patterson would
be pleased with this form of
recognition.”

Successful organizations start with quality
leadership. The WMH Foundation has recently
added three new board of directors to its team,
representing different communities in the hospital
service area.
“When looking for new leaders to serve on the
board for our hospital foundation, I look for several
personal and professional qualities in people,” says
WMH Foundation Development Officer Matt
Osterthun. “Natha, Dan, and Aaron possess downto-earth morals along with leadership styles that
will benefit the Foundation long-term.”
Natha and Dan began their two-year terms in
2013, while Aaron has started his one year term in
2014.

A Campaign for the Future...
During the past three years the Wright Memorial Hospital Foundation has
strived to tell its story to the community and region. We’ve used this
newsletter as a way to do so, along with the many press releases and events.
The walking trail and memorial garden campaign was a perfect project to
capture the WMH employee support, as well as letting our great region know
that we are a serious foundation striving to make an impact.
Let’s be honest. As a Foundation with a mission to strengthen our local
rural health care facility, we can’t afford to not be aggressive and visionary.
A person who relies on Wright Memorial Hospital, we would be doing you a
major disservice if we didn’t launch major efforts to raise funds for specific
pieces of equipment that can save lives.
The “Equipped for the Future” Campaign will advance our OB Department into one of the
strongest and most respected in the region, well beyond the national standards. This campaign is
about our future children, grandchildren, business owners, councilmen and pillars of the
community. I’ve learned in order to have a strong health care facility, you must have strong OB

Katherine’s Wish Granted
Moorhead leaves largest gift ever to Foundation
“We need to take care of ourselves first before we can expect others to do it for us.”
These are the words from the late Katherine LaVerne Moorhead as
she was administering her estate plans. It’s obvious that she had given
this much thought. It’s a statement that speaks volumes about the person
Katherine was: determined, strong-willed and decisive. Yes, those
personal traits were vital in her completing many Thomas Kinkade
puzzles during her lifetime, but Katherine’s heart and mind went well
beyond an enigma in a box.
So what do Katherine’s words mean? It’s a powerful message to
remember that as humans we should never sit back, take life for granted
and wait for others to address our needs with their contributions of labor
and finances. Instead, we need to be ready to step up and take action in
hopes that others will follow our lead.
Katherine Moorhead was born and raised in Mercer County, where
she was educated. She married Max Moorhead and enjoyed a fulfilling
career. The couple resided on a dairy farm, and together they owned and
operated the Princeton Photographic Studio for more than 20 years. Mr.
and Mrs. Moorhead left the farm and moved to Trenton in the early
1980s to be closer to necessary health care services. This is where they
would spend the rest of their lives. Max died in January 2000, bringing
Katherine LaVerne Moorhead
an end to a wonderful marriage and union. As Katherine aged she began
to realize even more the importance of quality health care, and that became very important to her with each and every year of her
life. She credited Wright Memorial Hospital for providing comfort for her later years of life. In return she decided she wanted to
help prolong the lives of others by including the hospital foundation in her planned giving.
Mrs. Moorhead died last November at age 95, but her legacy will live on for generations to come. With Katherine’s continual
reliance on the care and services of Wright Memorial Hospital, she created a gift of $120,000 that will forever benefit the hospital
and the citizens of a region she loved dearly.
“The Foundation is very appreciative of Mrs. Moorhead’s willingness to think about the health care needs of others,” said Matt
Osterthun, Foundation Development Officer for Wright Memorial Hospital. “This is a prime example of what people can do for
the future of our region. Wright Memorial was extremely vital in Katherine’s life, so this was her way to give thanks to an
institution she relied on while ensuring that Trenton and the surrounding communities are in good hands from a health care
perspective.”
This planned gift given to the WMH Foundation is the largest donation ever received in its eight-year history.
“Katherine has just inserted herself into a part of history when it comes to giving to the hospital,” Osterthun said. “These
dollars are going to help save many lives for years to come, and I hope that Katherine’s gesture will serve as an inspiration to
others to do the same for our health care facility. Although I never knew Mrs. Moorhead, it is inspiring for an individual to
recognize the importance of our hospital and the future needs of the region, while at the same time drawing upon her financial
and legal family to make certain her wishes were honored after her death.”
Osterthun encourages others to make plans like Mrs. Moorhead. At the same time he advises persons to visit with an attorney,
just as Mrs. Moorhead did.
“This world needs more caring individuals like Katherine Moorhead,” he said. “We hope that her story and gift to Wright
Memorial Hospital will be an inspiration to others.”
Today you will see Katherine’s name recognized on the Foundation’s donor wall as a “Humanitarian,” the level that honors
those who have contributed to the Foundation at a lifetime giving level of $100,000 - $499,999.
