The Daily Sparkle ® Friday 18 September 2015 The Way We Were binged.it/1Fo6ePq tinyurl.com/qhczle2 Today in History Russ Abbot Sponge Pudding On 18th September 1947, comedian Russ Abbot was born in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. He first went on stage as a musician with a comedy band called the ‘Black Abbots’. The band split up in 1980. I like summer food – salads and cold puddings, and ice cream. But I also like this time of year when the weather is cold enough some days to make a nice hot pudding very welcome. That was when Russ Abbot started his career as a comedian. He went on to win the ‘Funniest Man on Television Award’ five times. Russ Abbot had his own show. The first series was ‘Russ Abbot’s Madhouse’, and later ‘The Russ Abbot Show’. He also had straight acting parts on stage and TV. © 2015 Daily Sparkle All rights reserved One of our favourites was a Lemon Pudding that had a whole lemon cooked in the middle of a suet sponge. It was steamed until the lemon was cooked soft and all the juice soaked into the sponge. I used to make a nice lemon sauce to go with it and lots of custard. It was delicious. I liked treacle sponge, and jam sponge, but lemon was best. www.dailysparkle.co.uk 18 September 2015 Page 1 Over To You bit.ly/1BmUeIR binged.it/1EhfyQP Do You Remember Australian Wedding Spit and Polish My best friend at school, Graham emigrated to Australia in 1948. We didn’t have a phone back then, and international calls cost the earth. So, the only way we could keep in touch was by writing airmail letters. Dear Mary and Jimmy I liked writing letters to Graham in Australia. Even better was getting his letters back with his latest news. Then along came computers and emails. Suddenly, Australia was just a click away. Spit polishing involved rubbing the polish in with a drop or two of water, (or spit which was always readily available!) and it increased the shine. I think it was sometimes called ‘bulling’ or ‘bull-polishing’. Whatever it was, it worked. My uncle had the shiniest shoes I ever saw. His shoe-polishing technique was a habit he never lost. The first email Graham sent had this photo attached. His youngest daughter had just got married. It’s a bonny picture, and Graham looks a very proud father. © 2015 Daily Sparkle All rights reserved My uncle used to talk about kit inspection in the army. He and his mates got into a lot of trouble if their belts and shoes were not shiny enough to see their faces in. He often talked about ‘spit and polish’.
