RiverHawks
vs.
North Dakota
Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 l 4:00 p.m. l Grand Forks, ND
Memorial Field/Alerus Center (12,283)
THE GAME: The RiverHawks (1-1) travel to face the University of North
Dakota (0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the 45th Annual Potato Bowl USA.
Kickoff at Memorial Field at the Alerus Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
(CDT).
This will be the first time in school history that Northeastern State has
played an NCAA Division I football school. The Fighting Sioux are
members of the Great West Conference. UND is in its third year of
transitioning towards NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision
(FCS) status.
THE POTATO BOWL USA: The Potato Bowl USA is a week-long
festival teaming the University of North Dakota and the Red River Valley
potato growing industry. It features a Hugo’s Potato Bowl Pete Hidden
Medallion Contest, a Hugo’s 8K run, golf tournament, the world’s largest
french fry feed, pep rally, service club breakfast, parade, tailgating party,
and football game featuring the University of North Dakota. The week’s
activities are arranged by the Potato Bowl Committee, a group of Greater
Grand Forks volunteers.
The Potato Bowl USA was created in 1965 by then UND Athletic Director
Leonard R. “Len” Marti, head football Coach Marv “Whitey” Helling,
assistant football coach Jerry Olson and sports information director
Lee Bohnet. The first Potato Bowl USA was played in 1966, when the
Fighting Sioux shut out Idaho State 41-0 in a battle for pride among
potato growing regions.
North Dakota is 33-11 in Potato Bowl USA history.
RIVERHAWKS LAST WEEK: Northeastern State dropped its home
opener at No. 5-ranked Abilene Christian, 43-13. ACU, which improved
to 2-0, blocked three RiverHawk punts, two of which were returned for
touchdowns and the other set up a field goal, and returned a punt for
another score in the rout. However, the game was much closer than the
score indicated. Quarterback Kenny Davis tossed two TD passes, one to
Trey McVay and the other on a “Hail Mary” to Kendall McClellan to end
the half to pull Northeastern State to within 26-13 at halftime.
