Vitamin D!
Did you know that the days we are living in,
which welcome the summer, are very effective
for the synthesis of a vitamin that is very
important for our health? It is Vitamin D, socalled Vitamin Sun, which has a protective
effect for bone and tooth development and
against chronic diseases.

lthough Vitamin D, one of the fatsoluble vitamins, can be synthesized
in the skin from sun exposure is possible,
dietary deficiency of vitamin D is very
common. Especially among individuals
that are rarely exposed to sunlight and
children growing up fast, it even more
common. In order for the synthesis of
vitamin D to occur in the skin, one has to
be exposed to the direct sunlight, without
applying suntan oil, for 15 to 20 minutes
during daytime when the sunrays are
received at the right angle.
The most important function of vitamin
D on the body is to secure the transfer of
calcium to the bones. For this reason, a
diet deficiency in vitamin D causes rickets
in children. Rickets is a childhood disease
characterized by impeded growth, soft
cranium, deformed bones and frequent
contraction of infections.
As well as being effective on bone and
tooth development, the researches
show that it is protective against several
chronic diseases due to its effects on the
immune system. Considering its positive
impacts on bone health, as well as the
other positive actions, vitamin D is very
important and necessary for health.
Unfortunately, vitamin D is not found
on nutriments frequently. Some of the
nutriments consisting vitamin D are fish
liver oils / fatty fishes and egg yolk.
According to the results of Nutrition and
Health Research in Turkey, our intake
levels of vitamin D are low. Average intake
of vitamin D among 6-14-year-old children

is 1.1 mcg, which is dramatically lower
than the recommended intake level of 5
mcg. In this situation, our duty as parents
is to include foods containing vitamin D
and calcium to the diets of our children
and to make them utilize the sunlight
as much as possible. Food enriched
with vitamin D can also help you by
contributing to the vitamin D intake of
your children.
