They will then be introduced to/Review vocabulary found on page 16. The Teacher will introduce these words which are divided into 5 separate categories. The teacher will have the class repeat after him the words and translate them for the students. 10 minutes to Introduce Students will then do written practice, based off of activity 1 on page 16. They will choose four places where they go on vacation, write two activities which they do there, what the weather does and animals which they see there. These need to be in complete sentences. Students can add additional information as they see fit. The teacher will ask for volunteers to share an example of what they have written. DIRECT INSTRUCTION 15 minutes to complete written portion of the assignment 5-10 minutes oral share 25 minutes Give each student a Spanish Past Tense flip chart sheet. This is meant to be a resource for the student to use in order to compare the preterit and the imperfect tenses as well as to show when to use them. These are not collected for a grade but will be very useful handouts for students to refer back too through the unit. Explain to the students that there are two past tenses in Spanish: The Preterit and the Imperfect and that these are used in different situations. The preterit is used to discuss an event that can be viewed as being completed. It also is used to interrupt an event which is occurring in the past while the imperfect primarily sets the stage in story telling or shows habitual events. We will be looking at each of these tenses separately. Remind students that there are many different tenses (simple and compound) in Spanish. Also each of these will have separate endings which will need to be memorized in order to correctly conjugate the verb in the desired tense. Tell students that today we are going to go over the REGULAR preterit tense endings. This means that all of the verbs which follow the normal pattern of conjugation will follow these same steps and have these endings. Students should write these endings in the note page (Flip Charts) provided them: -AR Preterit Endings -ER/-IR Preterit Endings É AMOS Í IMOS ASTE ASTEIS ISTE ISTEIS Ó ARON IÓ IERON Explain that accent marks are crucial in the preterit tense. Use the example: HABLO vs. HABLÓ (I Speak [present tense] vs. He or She Spoke [preterit tense]) Accent marks will be expected on all assignments when we are working with the preterit tense.
