A NEW LEAF Willow Glen Center Executive Director Colleen Hudgen Tel: (408) 971-9363 Prg. Dir. - Telma Cramer Dear Live Oak Staff: I really enjoyed my time at your facility, a home away from home, on Friday the 6th. I was part of St. Anthony’s Church Volunteer Group and had a very informative, upbeat day. I was impressed with the high degree of care, attention, affection and compassion I saw from each of you. I look forward to returning probably with some of my family to lend a hand. Here’s a little contribution to offset expenses. Thanks again! Bob Stannard is a Master Gardener who has been coming to Live Oak for several years now. He visits us regularly to share his knowledge and bounty from his prolific garden. Bob was born and raised in Los Angeles and has one brother. He says L.A. was a great city then everyone knew each other and you could pay 5 cents to ride the streetcar to the beach, the hills, anywhere you wanted. Bob met his future wife in the third grade! They attended different high schools, but connected again while attending UCLA and married while still in college. They moved to Santa Rosa where Bob taught at a country school. After that, he was the principal at a school on the Russian River. They moved to Morgan Hill in 1975. Bob was the Superintendent of Schools for the Morgan Hill School District until his retirement in 1988, when they moved to San Martin. Bob had always been interested in gardening, but he became more involved after retiring. He was certified as a Master Gardener in 1996, and on his 1½ acres he has 160 rose bushes, 70 fruit trees and other plants and flowers! Bob comes here throughout the year to do presentations for us on roses, irises, citrus fruits, etc.. He tells us all about how he grows everything. He always has some entertaining stories, then he gives samples of his fruits for us to try. Blood oranges are always the big hit. Besides his beloved garden, Bob also enjoys his 5 children and 7 grandkids. Regarding Live Oak, he says, “I love an audience, I’m a ham!” CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP Live Oak Adult Day Services in Gilroy will hold its next Caregivers Support Group meeting on the third Wednesday of the month, April 15th, from 1:30 - 3:00 at the Live Oak Program Rm. 651 W. Belle has 3 daughters, 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She completed her formal education in Chicago, and after high school moved to San Jose to help her cousin with a dance school. At the dance school she met her first husband who brought in a nephew for lessons, and could not help but ask the talented and beautiful dance instructor out on a date. Belle is a born performer, and has always loved music and dancing. She remembers performing in front of others at a young age, and “. . . mother would dress me up in my best so I can perform at parties and gatherings, because people wanted to see her dance”. Belle was a member of the Olmstead group and performed professionally in San Jose. Belle also performed for children at schools and for patients at the hospital until recently. She still loves to dance and will do the “Charleston” when requested. Recently she showed a local dance group the correct way to move the feet and swivel the knees to the ground for this particular dance. Belle has a great sense of humor and always has a quick witty reply, and she firmly believes that dancing and music are the key ingredients to her good health and longevity. In her lifetime, she has lived on both coasts, and has done many things to help raise her family. As a great pastry chef Belle worked in a hospital kitchen as head chef and helped manage a restaurant in Manteca. She loves poetry and has a collection of great poems and anecdotes in a little book. Her favorite line and one that she lives by each day is “. . . when you take “IF” out of LIFE you have nothing. . . ” The “IF” restrains and holds one back from pursuing one‟s dreams, and you will need faith in God to help you reach your goals in life. LIVE OAK ADULT DAY SERVICES WILLOW GLEN (S.J.) - LOS GATOS - DOWNTOWN (S.J.) - GILROY - CUPERTINO YOU DESERVE A BREAK TODAY [Caring for my father] is less stressful… partly because I feel as though I have advocates (staff at Live Oak) and support in finding ways to bring meaning to my father’s life.” Literally speaking….respite for family caregivers can be a life saver. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance more that 50 million Americans are currently providing care for an elderly or disabled loved one. Respite services like those provided by Live Oak Adult Day Services provide temporary and much-needed relief for caregivers, allowing them to take time for necessary tasks like shopping, just taking a break or, in some cases, continuing to work. It is a natural human impulse to care for a loved one and with this comes the great satisfaction of giving back to an aging parent or dedicated spouse who has health challenges, or helping other relatives or friends who are important to us. However, according to a recent Indiana School of Medicine study, a quarter of family caregivers of Alzheimer‟s dementia patients had at least one emergency room visit or hospitalization every six months. Dr. Malaz Boustani, Assistant Professor of medicine, states, “Our findings opened our minds to the fact that society needs to expand the definition of „patient‟ to include both the person with Alzheimer‟s dementia and that individual‟s family caregiver.” “While we‟ve long known that Alzheimer‟s is a devastating disease to the patient, this study offers a look at how it also impacts the caregiver‟s health. If we do not offer help and support to the caregiver too, the stress of caring for someone with dementia can be overwhelming, both mentally and physically,” said Cathy Schubert, M.D, IU School of Medicine. “My mother died 2/21/07. Without her going to Live Oak I wouldn’t have been able to keep her in her home until she passed. It was a combination of the staff who supported both my mother and the stimulation going there gave her and the break it gave me.” Live Oak provides a full day of stimulating activities for your frail elderly relative who can not be left alone (requiring 24 hour non-medical care), as well as respite for caregivers, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Our services are provided in a warm and caring environment that promotes the health and well-being of the frail senior and his/her caregiver. So remember, the best way to be a good caregiver is to take care of you.
