I NEED my supplements!
The Dilemma

Why RISK Exists?
• Biggest reason = confusion over what constitutes a
dietary supplement
• Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act 1994
(DSHEA) defines dietary supplement as:
– contains a ‘dietary ingredient’ (i.e. a vitamin, mineral)
– taken by mouth, though it may have many forms (tablet,
capsule, powder, liquid, etc.)
– not intended to be consumed as a meal or as a meal
replacement
– company represents the product as a dietary supplement.
Why RISK Exists?
• Regulatory concerns
– Strict regulation not done prior to sale
• Global Supply Chain
– Low to no quality cheap raw ingredients
• Manufacturing practices
– Supplement manufactures not required to show
compliance with GMPs
• Dosage
– Distinguish between good ingredients and good
amounts of ingredients

Reduce the RISK!
• Truth in labeling – misleading labeling, amount of
ingredients not stated, etc.
• Review high risk list on www.supplement411.org
– An arbitration panel has found the product to have caused a
positive anti-doping test in an athlete.
– Ingredients advertised on label prohibited per WADA Prohibited
List
– Analytical testing resulted a prohibited substance

Strict Liability Principle
“…an athlete is responsible, and an
anti-doping rule violation occurs
whenever a prohibited substance is
found in an athlete’s sample. The
violation occurs whether or not the
athlete intentionally or
unintentionally used a prohibited
substance or was negligent or
otherwise at fault.”
(WADA Code comment to article 2.1.1)
Do Supplements Work?
• Different views on what “work” means
• Where studies show a supplement works, the
performance advantage is marginal and very
specific to a certain exercise or muscle group.
• No medical benefit
- Supplement companies cannot legally advertise such claims
• Some benefits in cases where nutrient deficiencies
exist.
- If there is no deficiency, then there may be no benefit

• Who makes it?
• How is it made?
