Ever since a Dutch explorer “discovered” the secluded island of
Rapa Nui and its inhabitants on Easter morning in 1722, the world
has puzzled over the island’s hundreds of enigmatic humanoid
statues called moai. Lining the seashore and dotting the treeless
landscape, the gigantic stone moai create an unparalleled cultural
landscape and distinguish their creators — the Rapa Nui people —
not only as members of the Polynesian tradition of stone carving,
but as master craftsmen and engineers.
Using simple Stone Age tools, the Rapa Nui sculptors carved the
front of the moai from the island’s volcanic rock. Massive quarries
have been found inside the three extinct volcanoes, some with
incomplete statues partially whittled from the earth. After freeing
the statues’ backs from the mother rock, they transported the moai
to ceremonial stone platforms called ahus.
But how? After all, some moai stand more than 32 feet tall and
weigh up to 86 tons!
Island legend says that the moai statues walked into place.
The Rapa Nui even have a word for the movement, “neke,”
which means “to creep.” Recently, researchers have
demonstrated how the ancient Rapa Nui engineers could have
stood the
statues upright and
shimmied them across
the earth using ropes
and teams of men —
giving them the
appearance of
“walking with
no legs.”
