Equal Groups
Give each group of students 144 tiles of one color.
On the overhead, display 5 rows of 8 tiles each. Have
students do likewise at their seats. What multiplication
sentences do these tiles show? Be sure students
recognize that both 5 ⫻ 8 ⫽ 40 and 8 ⫻ 5 ⫽ 40 describe
the situation. Write the sentences below the tiles. What
division sentences do the tiles show? Write “40 ⫼ 8 ⫽
5” and “40 ⫼ 5 ⫽ 8” below the multiplication sentences.

On the board, write a variety of number sentences with blanks for the operation
symbols. Include all four operations. Have volunteers tell what operation symbol belongs
in each blank and explain why. Example: Write “9
7 ⫽ 63” on the board. What
symbol belongs in the blank? How do you know? Could it be another symbol?
Students might say:
“The times sign goes in the blank because 9 times 7 is
equal to 63.”
“Another symbol would not work, since 9 ⴙ 7 ⴝ 16,
9 ⴚ 7 ⴝ 2, and 9 ⴜ 7 cannot possibly be 63.”

8 X 5 = 40
Notice that we can use division to undo multiplication, and we can use
multiplication to undo division. You might want to mention that multiplication and
division are called inverse operations. Have groups of students use their tiles to model
multiplication/division fact families for a given three numbers that you provide.

5 X 8 = 40
These four number sentences make up a fact family
for the numbers 5, 8, and 40.
NOTE Students investigate multiplication/
division fact families and complete
comparison sentences involving all
four operations.

GROUPS
Discuss the basic properties of 1 and 0 in multiplication and division:
• 1 times any number is that number.
• 0 times any number is 0.
• Any number (other than 0) divided by
1 is that number.
• Any number (other than 0) divided by
itself is 1.
• 0 divided by any number (other than 0)
is 0.

Now I’ll write some sentences and have you compare one part with the other.
On the board write sentences, some involving combinations of operations, such as
5⫻7
36 ⫼ 1. Have volunteers supply the correct comparison sign, ⫽, ⬍, or ⬎,
and explain their reasoning.
PR AC TICE
In the Activity 37 Master, students investigate multiplication/division fact families
and complete comparison sentences involving all four operations.
DIFFERENTIATION : Suppor ting the Range of Learner s
Give each group a cube labeled 1–6 and a cube labeled 7–12. Have group
members take turns tossing the cubes and have the rest of the group write corresponding
multiplication facts using the two numbers and then complete a fact family by supplying
related division facts.
