Holden Lane Primary School Working Together, Learning for Life 8th March 2017 Dear Parents, We hope this letter will be useful to you, giving information about your child’s learning which will help to support your child throughout this term. TEACHER YEAR GROUP Subject Area Literacy Miss Bagguley, Miss Moss and Miss Kay 6 Topics Speaking and Listening During discussions, children will be encouraged to listen carefully, make contributions and ask questions that are responsive to others’ views. They will also orally present their work to other children in the class. Reading and Writing The class text this half term will be the narrative poem ‘The Highwayman’. The children will focus on the poet’s use of language, identifying figurative language and discussing the impact of the language on the reader. They will take part in group discussions and performances of the poem. When answering questions about the poem, the children will learn how to use quotes from the poem as evidence to support their answers. During reading sessions, the children will read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, answering questions which involve them to locate evidence in a text, make inferences from their reading and comment on authors’ language choices. As part of their topic work, the children will have the opportunity to read and write a range of non-fiction text types. Numeracy During the half term, the children will: Use the four operations for calculations involving decimals and fractions. Solve ration and proportion word problem. Identify the properties of quadrilaterals. Calculate fractions and percentages of amounts. Solve problems involving co-ordinates presented in four quadrants. The children will be learning about: The role of women during the War Messages delivered by propaganda posters The impact of the War in other countries How World War 2 ended Other subjects Science: The children will continue to learn about electricity, designing and building their own circuits. RE: The children will continue to learn about the similarities and differences of the beliefs of Christians and Humanists. PHSCE: During this half term, the children will focus on the relationships they have with others. Further Information Home Learning Home Learning is intended to support learning in the classroom and will be an extension of work covered in class. The children will be given a homework task on a Friday which will be collected in on the following Tuesday. If homework is not returned to school on time, children will be asked to attend a homework club on a Thursday lunchtime. Spellings are sent home on a Monday to be learnt in preparation for a test on Friday. PE During the Spring Term, Year 6 will have PE on a Monday and a Wednesday. Their learning will focus on invasion games, including tag-rugby and netball. Please make sure that your child has trainers in school, in addition to a sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms to wear during outdoor PE lessons.
