Meat/Poultry industry Facts & Success Story
Meat Industry: Fun Facts
• The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, recommend
eating 5.7 ounces of meat per day as part of a healthy,
balanced diet.
• There are at least 29 cuts of beef, 6 cuts of pork, and
numerous poultry cuts that are leaner and have less
calories than a 3 oz. serving of salmon.
• A 3-oz. serving of lean meat provides about 160-200
calories plus significant amounts of many key nutrients
such as protein. These proteins contain all 9 essential
amino acids needed for growth and good overall health,
making meat a “complete” protein.
• Meat is also a great source for iron, magnesium, zinc, niacin,
selenium, riboflavin and B-vitamins that help your body turn food
into energy.
• New studies show meat can aid in weight loss by providing a
sense of satisfaction that helps to control appetite and metabolize food more efficiently.
• American men on average eat 6.9 oz. of meat per day
and women eat 4.4 oz.
Success Story
Background
A poultry plant in Selbyville, Delaware, was experiencing two
major problems with a competitor’s black flat top polyethylene
belt: premature belt failure and plastic sprocket failure.
In this application, live chickens are unloaded onto a cage
dump belt and then funneled on to a live hanging belt. This
process is very dirty and abrasive, causing additional stress on
the belt and resulting in the premature failures of both the belt
and sprockets.
Solution
To solve this problem, Habasit recommended and installed
the M5015 Flat Top belt with nylon rods and acetal sprockets.
Our nylon rods have a closed hinge and a larger diameter,
which increase the life of the belt and sprockets. Further, our
urethane sprockets last as long as the competitors stainless
steel sprockets, while their acetal sprockets last only 1/3 of
the time of our urethane sprockets. The End User saw their
belt and sprocket life double from 24 months to 48 months.
Lastly, Habasit was detailed enough to recommend the
M5015 in black as it calms the chickens during conveyance.
