Individual assignment: Tips for efficient reading of academic articles

Read well the Abstract and Introduction – after that you should know what the paper
is about. Check the reference list for quality (publications and authors).
Move on to the Literature review. Think about your experience of the coursework
‘academic writing’, and focus on the Lead Sentences (first sentence of each
paragraph) when reading – they should tell you the storyline.
Next check that you understand how the empirical research was done: browse through
the Methods.
Finalize your reading with Findings, and Discussion and Contributions (focus on
Lead Sentences again)
Think about the following points when reading:
o What is the main problem or issue that the author is addressing?
o What is the author’s central claim, argument, or point?
o How was the empirical research done? (research strategy, data collecting
method, analysis)
o What were the main findings?
o How did the findings contribute to existing research and literature i.e. is the
author introducing something new to the existing literature?
Raise critical questions:
o Include your own views for weighing arguments, evaluating evidence, and
raising critical questions (think about your Critical thinking course)
Be prepared to discuss your views with your team, and to contribute to the team
presentation or to share your perspectives in the classroom discussion
