Knitting Pattern
This pattern, sized from preemies through toddlers, is an quick knit. The small amount of color-work adds interest.
Knitting Instructions (Part 1)
Chart
A
Hat Ribbing
With color A, cast on 60(72, 84, 92) sts.
Join in a round, and knit 10(11, 12, 13) rounds of 2X2 ribbing
(k2, p2).
Increase Round
With color A, knit one round, increasing evenly as follows (by
size):
XS: (K6, M1) 10 times (70 sts)
S: (K9, M1) 8 times (80 sts)
M: (k14, M1) 6 times (90 sts)
L: (K11, M1) 8 times, K4 (100 sts)
Fair Isle Rounds
Follow chart A for 9 rounds, repeating the 5 stitch pattern 14(16,
18, 20) times for each round.

Figure 1 shows the pattern with 5 repeats.
The primary hat color “A” can be changed in Chart A for a different effect, as shown in the Boy Hat (size XS) where Color A is orange, not
blue for the Fair Isle Rounds.
For the larger sizes, optionally repeat Chart A. As shown in the Girl Hat
knitted in size M, the colors are reordered in the second repeat.
Sizes XS (S, M, L)
Hat circumference (above ribbing,
unstretched): 12” (14”, 16”, 18”).
Age guidelines: XS for preemies, S for newborn
to about 4 months, M for up to 1 year, L for 1-3
years
For best fit, hat circumference is usually about
10% less than actual head circumference.
Materials and Gauge
Gauge: 5.5 sts per inch
Needles: Size 5, or size to obtain gauge
Yarn: Sport or DK (3 colors)
Color A: 1 50gm skein (about 170 yds), Colors B and C: 25 yds each

Finishing the Hat
Draw yarn through remaining stitches with large eyed sewing needle. Weave in ends. Optionally add a pom-pom.
Notes on Yarns Selection:
The hats pictures are knit using Knit Picks Shine Sport. This is a cotton,
modal yarn.
A warmer version in Jaggerspun Super Lamb (a soft, machine washable
wool) would be a beautiful choice. Although tagged as worsted, at 1,120
yds/lb this yarn would be suitable. Be sure to test gauge and adjust needle
if necessary.
