If outside, get down in a ditch or low lying area and cover your head with your arms. SUPPORT STAFF INFO RESPONSIBILITIES General Areas of Responsibility • Maintain one’s self in a manner consistent with spiritual maturity among the students. • Be responsible of the camp administration team. • Cultivate positive morale among the other support staff and students through efforts of personal loyalty to them. • You will be assigned a group of students, for whom you alone are responsible. • You will sleep in the same room with them, eat with them, participate in the activities with them, attend services with them and pray with them. Specific Areas of Responsibility • Become acquainted immediately with each student during small group times and attend daily support staff meetings at 8:00am in the cafeteria. • Be responsible to see that your group, along with yourself, attends each session and activity an time. • Monitor the room of your students, checking for neatness and cleanliness throughout the week. • Deal with minor disciplinary problems related to camp rules (couples getting too physically involved, too much roughhousing, inappropriate clothing, etc.) • Lead group in wrap questions at the end of each night. • Complete the Spiritual Progress Report forms on a daily basis and turn them in of the Support Staff Director each morning. • Complete final room check on Friday. Be sure rooms are neat and orderly. Please remain at site until your room has been checked. • After lights out, you should remain in your assigned room. Support staff should abide by the general camp curfew. RESPONSIBILITIES • Be available to pray with students around the altars during the evening services. • Refrain from yielding to any romantic inclinations during the camp. These kinds of distractions can hinder you and can potentially create unhealthy attitudes. • Adhere to the guidelines established by the “General Camp Rules.” • During delays such as rain, please remain with students at all times. • Encourage your students to enter into the recreational period enthusiastically. Help the timid students to enter into group participation. • Support stall members need time all, but their first responsibility is to the student. Prepare time all carefully. Never leave your students unsupervised for an extended period of time. • Know your physical limitations. A tired or sick support staff member doubles the workload for someone else so take advantage of rest periods. • Do not try to advice in a field that you know nothing about. If you don’t have an answer, admit it, and ask far same help from the camp leadership. • Teach your group Christianity, cleanliness and sportsmanship. At all times, be firm, fair and friendly. • Please use cell phones during free times only. DISCIPLINE You will be the key to successful discipline. Your skill in dealing with students determines, to a considerable degree, how well the students will enjoy and benefit from their stay. • Discipline only in the spirit of Christ. When a student breaks the rules, help him/her understand why we have that rule. The rules are far the students’ protection and safety. Don’t use them as a club or a symbol of unpleasantness. • In the matter of “lights out.” Remember that a certain amount of nonsense is part of a camp program: however, we must respect others and the fact that students need plenty of rest. Gentle firmness to the rules will usually salve the problem. • You must insist your students attend all meals, activities, morning sessions and evening services. If they protest, claiming sickness, contact the Support Stall Director for a settlement. CHILD ABUSE POLICY It is the policy of the Heartland youth camp staff that cases of suspected child abuse or sexual molestation be immediately reported to the Camp Director. The Camp Director will advise the District Youth Director. The DVD will contact the Marrow County Child Protective Service and report the situation. The DVD and the Camp Director will determine whether additional notification (i.e. parents. pastor. legal attorney of the Ohio Ministry Network. etc.) is necessary. Reporting Responsibilities Any camp staff volunteer or paid personnel who reasonably believe in good faith or who suspects that abusive behavior has occurred or may have occurred should report the alleged act immediately, according to the following report pattern: Child or Youth: Discloses allegation of abuse to adult staff Adult Staff: Reports immediately to the DYD or Camp Director DYD or Camp Director: Advises the Camp Director of the situation and determines if any further notification is necessary. DYD or Camp Director: Informs Morrow County Child Protection Services. *Explain to them our procedures – Both of you will have to go to the DYD and Camp Director and appropriate measures will be taken (consistent with abuse flow chart). *Inform camp leadership immediately – with the student present, repeat the situation to the Camp Director. He will serve as a filtering system to confirm what has been reported. *The Camp Director must contact the DYD immediately with the following information: Abused student’s name; age and birth date; parents’ or guardians’ names; abuser’s name, address and phone number; other siblings in the home. It will be our responsibility to give our camp address, the camp director’s name and also the abused student’s pastor’s name. The DYD will then contact Children’s Services. Our Goals in Dealing with Abuse Cases • Protect the victim. • Correct the abuser. • Restore healing and right relationship with Gad to those involved. HELPING HURTING STUDENTS Start by letting the student know that there is hope, and by reminding yourself and the student that Gad and God alone is the source of hope for help and healing. You have nothing to offer apart from God’s help, so make sure that you take the time to acknowledge your dependence upon Him by praying for wisdom (James 1:5) and intervention (Psalm 32:8). Pray with the expectation that God will heal and deliver, because only He can. LISTEN--”lf one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame” (Proverbs 18:13. ESV). In order to provide the best help, it’s critical that you understand what’s going on. Be comfortable with silence. Give the teen the space to tell you about his or her struggle. Ask clarifying questions to help understand all the issues. Often, just processing the situation enough to communicate it to a safe listener gives the student a clearer picture of his own heart. RESPECT--As a youth leader, you already know how important respect is to teenagers. Your helping relationship with a hurting teen must also be marked by mutual respect. “with all humility and gentleness and bearing with one another in love” (Ephesians 4:2 ESV). Respect the student’s worth as a younger brother or sister in the faith. Don’t talk down to students or belittle their experiences. Respect the position of trust you have been granted in their life. Remember, you may not be able to promise complete confidentiality, depending on the situation. But you should always be sensitive to the student regarding how confidential information is shared with parents or other authorities. Respect their boundaries, and expect them to respect yours. Never counsel a student behind closed doors: meet in the church office (with someone else there and the door open), or in a public place. Don’t manipulate or exploit the student, and don’t let yourself be manipulated or exploited either. It’s necessary for you to stay objective. GUIDE--”Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance” (Proverbs 1:5 ESV). Providing spiritual guidance is an art form that bath good youth workers and goad parents will forever strive to perfect. While the perspective and wisdom you have as an adult make the answers obvious (“quit calling him,” “break up with her.” “confess your sin to your parents.” “tell the truth.” etc.), communicating wisdom to a teenager in a way they can both understand and accept is the real challenge. Try to draw attention to the underlying issues, not behaviors. Once the deeper issues are identified, address them with Scripture. Apply the truths of Gad pertaining to identity, acceptance, guilt, anger and love to the teenager’s heart. Pray for the Holy Spirit to open his eyes and enable him to see. CHALLENGE--As you provide guidance and direction, you may need to challenge false beliefs or flawed perceptions. “I understand it may seem like no one cares, but that just isn’t true.” Is the student’s issue directly connected with an incorrect assumption or a false belief? You have been trusted to speak into a teenager’s life. Don’t be afraid to be direct and speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). REFER--You’re a youth leader, and mast likely not a licensed professional counselor, social worker, or therapist. Know when you’re out of your league and pass it off to someone better qualified. *Wilson, Greg. “Youth Ministry Essentials: S Steps to Helping Hurting Students.” Youth Ministry Essentials: S Steps to Helping Hurting Students. N.p., 12 Aug. 2010. Web. II June 2014. ACTIVITIES SMASH HOURS ACID RAIN This relay race has every team facing a large barrel that will be filled with plastic balls and guarded by an angry fire hose. The object of the game is to, in relay race fashion, send one person at a time to go under an obstacle, take a ball out of the fire-hosed guarded barrel, and then return with the ball (not through the obstacle). The next person in line will put the ball back into the barrel. You will send students until the designated number is reached. BOUNCY BALLIN’ Each team will gather in the designated parking lot and will designate a various number of balla’s to retrieve bouncy balls that will be violently set free each round. Each round there will be different numbers of participants from each team and different amounts of balls being let go. There will be a time limit for each round and balla’s can only get one ball each round unless designated by the activities guys. The team with the most bouncy balls collected by the end of the last round will be the best ballin’ team! HEARTLAND 500 This game will happen in the parking lot, where there will be a race to complete a race track while rolling and flipping tractor tires. 2 people will be rolling tires around the track while 2 more will be flipping tires around the track. Sound like a lot of work? We know you will be TIRED! HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAM (HRT) This messy relay race will have their team members, one at a time, run through a gauntlet of obstacles to find “hostages” in a mix of mess. In the gauntlet you will have to go under standing apparatus, then under a crawling apparatus, and then over a large apparatus in order to retrieve a hostage. Your one team member will retrieve a single hostage and run it back to your team captain, then your next team member can attempt the course. Once the designated number of hostages have been found from the mud pile and returned, your team will win! LEAKY BUCKET Each team will send a designated number of players at a time with a “leaky bucket” to retrieve water from the fire hose. The teams will take their “leaky bucket” to their team’s blue drum/trash can and pour whatever water that they could contain. You cannot plug the holes, only cover them with body parts. The team with the most water at the end will win. ORB RUN Each team will try to get through the obstacle course of a slip-n-slide, gladiators and the fire hose while wearing an orb suit. This game will be a relay to see who can finish first and stay on their feet. THE PONY EXPRESS This final event on Friday morning separates the winners from the whiners as you attempt to conquer this legendary camp race. It’s an entire-team encompassing, entire-camp encompassing, gigantic relay race. 37 individuals compete in events and then hand the baton to the next team member until all are accomplished. Your entire team will then run across the finish line. You will need to use your time wisely during the week to prepare for this final event. Start your recruiting NOW! You will have some time on Thursday to plan for this event, but you might want to start earlier. THE PUZZLER Each team will get send three to four players connected together at a time to find puzzle pieces strategically placed in the field. After all the pieces have been successfully retrieved, 3 more people will put together a puzzle to win the game. TIC TAC THROW This race will require speed and intelligence. Your team will compete against another team in a game of Tic Tac Toe, but not your typical way to play it. It will be a lot of running and thinking as each round your team will compete to win. TIRE WARS The field will be set up in a giant circle with a chair for the team captain by each cone. In the center of the circle, there will be a huge pile of tires. Each team will send a designated number of students per round to drag as many tires as they can back to their team captain. Each round will alternate between boys only and girls only. Once a team captain touches any tire, it will be considered won for their team. The team captain needs to stay seated the entire round and cannot move their chair while the round is still going. If more than one team grabs the tire, it will be settled the old fashioned way: who wants it more? You can only grab tires, not people, during the war. The most “tired” team will win. SMASH HOUR OVERVIEW Monday is SWEAT Tuesday is WET Wednesday is MUD Thursday is WINDED THINGS TO KNOW ROOM CHECKS Every day, each room can get points for their team with what we like to call the 3 C’s = Cleanliness, Creativity and Caring. Clean is a sweet smelling room that is spotless. Creative is doing something creative to your roam to make the Activity Directors smile, like decorating it to a theme. Caring is leaving some love (i.e. drinks. candy. etc.) for the Activity Directors. The more you WOW the Activity Directors, the more points you’ll receive! Rooms are typically evaluated with a four-tiered system: (1) just one of the two C’s designated for the day, (2) just the basics of both C’s, (3) pretty good, and (4) WOW! Tuesday: The goal today is to have a clean room with some creative idea that will “wow” the judges. Please do not make a mess! Wednesday: The goal today is to have a clean room with some creative team spirit and best represent your team in your creativity. Thursday: The goal today is to have the cleanest room possible with a little bit of caring for the judges. MIDDAYS Prior to Smash Hours (messy games), there will be a “hyped” time when the activity guys perform skits, announce the results of games, room checks and scores in the Oakwood sanctuary. You will need to have your team ready to cheer loudly with team spirit and be unified and enthusiastic! BELT BLITZ If one of the activity directors is wearing a championship belt during the week (not on the stage), the first 3 support staff to tag them will receive points for their team. Warning: You will have to run and chase them! Students cannot touch the activity directors at any time during a blitz. Period. YOU As support staff, everything hinges on YOU. If you want the kids to have a great attitude, then you need to lead the way and be the example. If you want the kids to participate and get dirty, then YOU have to do the same. If you want the kids to cheer and get excited for their team, then YOU have to do the same. Everything rises and falls on leadership and WE BELIEVE IN YOU! Help us make this week each camper’s best and most memorable week of their year! NOTES PONY EXPRESS PONY EXPRESS A. 3 people must put together a puzzle in front of the Hickory Lodge. (1.2.3) B. DODGEBALL CAPTURE THE FLAG Instructions: • Play - A dodgeball game played in a giant circle, separated into four quadrants (or pies). It is called sand dollar because it is generally played with five teams, but this year it will be played with four teams in four quadrants. Each team will have the same designated amount players and one designated quadrant of the circle to defend. • Starting Play - Each boy’s team plays with six players in each of their quadrants. Girls will play with seven in each. • Initiate Play -- They must throw the dodgeballs and eliminate the quadrants around them. In order to eliminate the opposing team, a player may I) catch an opposing player’s ball. 2) Hit an opposing player with a toss or 3) force the other player to step out of their quadrant. If a ball hits you at any time, you are out (even a ball that has already hit the ground). You must dodge all the dodgeballs thrown. • Scoring -- Each time a quadrant has all its players eliminated, the conquering teams, located directly next to the eliminated team, can now storm the now vacant quadrant. When only two teams are left, the support staff members will call a free for all, meaning that there is no center lines (just outer circle) and it’s dodgeball with the remaining players in the entire circle until another team is eliminated. Once all the other teams are eliminated, the remaining team wins the round. You will play as many rounds as time allows. • Defense - You may not use a ball to block in sand dollar dodgeball. You must catch or dodge. When a ball hits you and you cannot control it (i.e. catch or pick it up cleanly), you will be out. If you catch an opposing team’s ball, the thrower is out, but no players re-enter the game. If you go out of bounds to catch a ball, you will be out. • Out of bounds - Any ball that leaves the circle is a dead ball until it is thrown back into play. If a current player steps out to get a ball, they will be out. Those not playing currently can toss a ball back in play. • Substitutions - Support Staff members can substitute players not in the game after each round. Instructions: HI FIVE Concept – This is a mixture of football, ultimate Frisbee and basketball. Initiate Play -- Each team plays (Girls) 7-on-7 and (Boys) 5-on-5. The team with the possession will start at their backboard and start to throw the football down to the other backboard to score. Play – The offensive team must begin to move the football down the field by passing from one team member to another. Defenders must give at least a 3-feet cushion to the throwing team. Movement of the Ball -- The football may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players MAY NOT RUN with the ball. Receiving players may use their momentum to stop, but no more than 2 steps. The person with the football (the “quarterback”) has ten seconds to throw the ball. Each team is trying to throw the football through the square hole in the opposing team’s backboard. Scoring -- Each time the offense tosses the ball through the hole in the defense’s backboard, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated by the other team after each score. Change of possession -- When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the ball and becomes the offense. The defending team may knock down a pass, but not knock the ball out of the opposing player’s hands to take possession. If a player steps out-of-bounds while holding the football or the football is thrown out-of-bounds, the defending team takes possession and heads the opposite direction from the spot where the football went out. If the ball hits the backboard and is caught before it hits the ground, it can be played again. The moment the ball hits the ground for any reason, even after hitting the backboard, it’s the opposing team’s ball from that point. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. Substitutions – Support Staff members can substitute players after a score and/or during an injury timeout. POWERBALL Instructions: • Starting Play- Each team plays 6 offensive and 4 defensive players. • Set Up - 5 total trash cans= set up I in each earner of the field and one in the middle. • Objective - ta get the ball into the trash cans before you are struck by the defenders. • Scaring- when the offensive team gets the ball in the earner cans they scare I paint. if they get the ball in the center can they get 3 paints. Rounds end when either the offensive team scares or the defensive team stops them. The offense maintains possession as long as they continue scaring. • Rules of Play - Players must stay inside the boundary at all times. If the ball is dropped or hits the ground for any reason, the round is over and the defensive team takes possession. ULTIMATE FRISBEE Instructions: • Starting Play - Each team plays (Girls) ID-on-ID and (Boys) 7-on-7. • Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws the disc to the offense. • Play - The receiving team must begin to move the Frisbee down the field by passing from one team member to another. Defenders must give at least a 3-feet cushion to the throwing team. • Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. Receiving players may use their momentum to stop. but no more than 2 steps. The person with the disc (“thrower”) has ten seconds to throw the disc. • Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s endzone. The offense scores a point. [You may not walk the Frisbee into the endzone (using your momentum) to score.] A player needs only one foot in bounds while making a completion in the endzone to score. When a touchdown is scored the team that did not score must walk. Play is initiated after each score. • Change of possession -- When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds. drop. block. interception). The defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. The defending team may knock a thrown Frisbee down to take possession. If a player steps out-of-bounds while holding the Frisbee or the Frisbee is thrown out-ofbounds. The defending team takes possession and heads the opposite direction from that spot. • Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. • Substitutions - Support Staff members can substitute players not in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
