Covalent Bond Ionic Bond

Covalent Bond
“molecular”
Generally involves nonmetals (Carbon is a
metalloid)
Never more than 2 types of atoms……
Two “negatives” bond together (NO2)
Name is same as atom, may use di, tri,
etc… second atom ends in -ide
Gases –oxygen gas, hydrogen gas, etc
same atom (N2) - diatomic
Ionic Bond
“ionic”
involves a metal (especially group IA or
IIA)
Can have 3 or more types of atoms
(NaSO3)
An anion must bond with a cation
Name doesn’t always reflect atoms or
amounts (sodium carbonate)
Acids (has H+) or base (has OH-)
