The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” KNIGHTS OF PETER CLAVER *3rd Degree Knights 2nd Saturday.4 p.m. *4th Degree Knights 4th Sunday, 2 p.m. *Fr. Lord, Jesus Christ FEAST OF FAITH The Shape of the Mass In the renewal of the liturgy that followed the Second Vatican Council, the full, conscious, and active participation of the assembly was the primary consideration. By participation, the Council Fathers did not mean just joining in the singing and the spoken responses, but active engagement and prayerful understanding of the rites. They envisioned a transparent liturgy, a worship that spoke so directly to the hearts and minds of the faithful that it would require no explanation at all. The liturgy itself is the best possible catechesis on the liturgy. What does the liturgy teach us? It shows us the ministry of Jesus continuing in the present. He gathers a community. He calls us to prayer and repentance and praise. He teaches us with the very word of God. He does not send us away empty, but sets before us a marvelous banquet, feeding us with his very body and blood. Then he sends us forth to do what he has done—to give ourselves for others, not just in words, but in deeds. The Mass is the pattern of our Christian lives. Isaiah 35:5 Advent invites us to open the eyes and ears of our heart to a joyful receptivity of Christ’s presence. Overall, I think Christians enter more fully into Lent with its focus on Christ’s suffering than they enter into Advent with its spotlight on joy. Why? Perhaps there is some old message in us that believes holiness comes to those who suffer a lot. We can grow from joy as well as from sorrow. All depends on our attitude. Suffering can lead to compassion or to bitterness and self-centeredness. Joy can also move toward overt self-orientation but it most often promotes gratitude, praise, eagerness to share and enthusiasm for the Creator’s gifts. Perhaps the best present we could give one another this Christmas is a joyful heart and a cheerful attitude. BIBLE SEARCH 1. True or False? Jesus predicted that persecution would be so intense for His disciples that only natural family ties would be strong enough to protect believers from betrayal.(Matt. 10:21) 2. How does this saying of Jesus end? “You will not have gone through the cities of Israel before --”a) “The temple is entirely destroyed” -- b) “The Son of Man comes” -- c) “You see the abomination of desolation”(Matt. 10:23) 3. Whose son did the two blind men following Jesus say that He was? a) God’s b) Joseph’s c) David’s (Matt. 9:27). THE LOOK OF LOVE What does love look like? It has feet to go to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others. —St. Augustine WATCHING AND WAITING 19TH -- Jr. Youth’s Christmas Cookie Sale In his love Christ has filled us with joy as we prepare to celebrate his birth, so that when he comes at the end of time he may find us watching in prayer, our hearts filled with wonder and praise. —Adapted from the second Preface for Advent, Roman Missal
