VI SUAL R HYME
MATCH CUT E DITING, Fi n al P r oj ect
Objective: This final project will allow
students to produce their own
approximate 1-minute quicktime movie
based on associative editing. The
quicktime will include a title and credits
with audio (optional if inappropriate to
your movie). Th e mai n obj ecti ve i s to
fi n d two obj ects, composi ti on s,
acti on s or scen es th at h ave
di fferen t mean i n g, bu t vi su al l y
l ook al i ke. Use objectives shown in
class for examples such as Space Odyssey
2001). This project will guide the student
into a free flowing relationship between
narrative and non-narrative; or visual
rhyming. Students will have a hands-on
experience on using abstract concepts of
composition to create “closure” for the
viewer. Students are therefore encouraged to explore formal issues studied
throughout the term such as: composition (diversity of angles and points of
view); rhythmic editing; stills, motion graphics, and dramatic composition scale
change, variety of texture, formal color; lighting; tight audio and editing; audio
rollbacks; match on action; eye-line matching; follow shot, pull back, pan and
tracking or dollying shot. Proj ects mu st demon strate competent framing,
tripod use, cropping, camera skills, color and contrast. Projects that use blurry
images, poor lighting, fast zooming, shaky or hand held footage without it being
rationalized within the project objectives, will be downgraded.
METHODS
Video may incorporate photographic or abstract, props, indoor or outdoor
environments as appropriate. The editing objective is to create a “match cut” edit.
As in the examples in class (such as North by Northwest), fi n d two i mages,
props, or composi ti on s th at vi su al l y match or rh yme . This should be
explored in both the documentation and in the post-production.
AUDIO
Sound effects and copyright free audio will be demonstrated. Students are
encouraged to use in-camera audio, create a narrative voiceover, collaborate with
sound or music colleague, play original scores and/or use available effects
demonstrated in class. ALL AUDIO MUST BE ORIGINAL, any copyrighted files,
even mixed, borrowed or copied may lead to the failure of this course. Speak to
the Instructor if you have any questions or concerns regarding audio.
STORYBOARD DUE: Thursday, April 26th, beginning of class.
Due: Must be in the “Drop Folder… LMoren” Monday May 14th . All files must be
posted by the end of the day. Any projects that come in after that time will be
downgraded by one full letter grade.
