Description
Digital note-taking applications such as Evernote can be major productivity tools for students and
professionals. Supported by several platforms (mobile, desktop, web), Evernote offers functionality
such as creating notebooks, clipping web articles, and notifications. We plan to evaluate Evernote’s
reminder feature as used within the web application.

Introductory Script
Thank you for taking time out of your day to participate in this usability study. My name is _____
and I will be guiding you through today’s session. Here with me today is ______ who will be
making sure everything runs smoothly and taking some notes during the session. Before we
begin, I am going to read this script so everyone in the room receives the same instructions and
we are all on the same page.
The reason you are here today is because we are asking some people to try out some features
on Evernote and see whether or not they work according to how you expect them to work. This
is important because we are not testing you, we are testing the application. You cannot do
anything wrong during this study. Our objective is to improve Evernote. We did not design or
build Evernote so you should feel free to give your honest opinions and thoughts during the
session.
For the purpose of our study, we are going to use a webcam, audio recorder, and
screen-recorder so we can review the session later. The video will only be used to help us
improve the application and will not be seen by anyone except the people working on this
project and for reporting purposes. We have a consent form for you to sign today. Do you have
any questions so far before I explain what you will be doing today?
Here is the consent form for you to sign
❏ Give participant consent form to sign
Today, you will be given a packet with four tasks to complete on your own. It will take
approximately 30 minutes.
I want you to:
● Read each scenario out loud and use the computer in front of you to complete the task
● After each task, remember to complete the rating on how easy the task was on the page
● After all the tasks have been completed, we will have an open discussion about your
experience using Evernote and we’ll ask any clarifying questions based on our
observations and notes at the end
While completing each task, I want you to verbally think aloud—tell us what you see on the
screen, what you’re doing, and your thought process so we can follow along. Any opinions, what
you like, what you dislike, things you find confusing—just throw them out there. If you have any
questions during the study, feel free to ask them. If you need a break at any point, just let us
know.
Do you have any questions before we begin?

Seems like your PSYCH 101 peers are struggling
with the class concepts. Your professor decided to

4
5
Very confusing
2. If you were confused by any part of this task, please briefly describe your confusion:
These responses will be compared with the post-test questionnaire responses to see if participants’
ratings of individual tasks line up with their rating the whole reminder system. This will also identify
pain points that we can focus on providing a design solution.
