Message from the
Chairman of the
Cherry Festival
Committee
I
Johan du Toit, Chairman
t is second nature for people to
want to party and this is one of
the reasons why Ficksburg gives
young and old an opportunity to make
merry during November. Come and
join in the oldest crop festival in South
Africa, when our “red gold” is ripe,
and the week-long Cherry Festival
takes place.
This year the committee has
endeavoured to arrange a festival with
a wide variety of events which will
appeal to all ages and tastes. The
Cherry Festival is presented for the
residents of Ficksburg, as well as
visitors to our town and the committee
invites one and all to join in the
celebrations.
May you all take only good
recollections of your visit to Ficksburg
and its Cherry Festival away with
you.
The Cherry Festival Committee
would like to express its appreciation
to all those who have made the 35th
Cherry Festival possible.
Greetings from Cherry Country!

Chairman:
Cherry Festival Committee 2002
How the Cherry Festival
started 35 years ago
T
he idea for the first Cherry Festival took
root in 1968 when a group of young men
who had founded a Ficksburg chapter of Jaycee
International, the international service/leadership development organisation, were looking
for a project to launch their new organisation
and perform a service to the community.
Many ideas were thrown around, so it is difficult to say exactly how a Cherry Festival was
arrived at!!!
What is sure, however, is that Ficksburg is
the largest cherry producing area in South Africa, followed by its two neighbours, Clocolan
and Fouriesburg, and to a lesser extent parts of
the Ladybrand district.
The Jaycees thus connected a Ficksburg
product to a festival which would then promote
the cherry industry and the town. Today Ficksburg is known throughout the country as the
Cherry Town, and the two have become syn-
onymous with each other.
Through the years the Cherry Festival has
grown in stature, and has become one of the
‘events’ in South Africa, with thousands of visitors visiting the Eastern Free State during cherry
time. Special bus tours have become very popular, and Ficksburg has become a ‘must’ for tour
operators.
The first Cherry Carnival, as it was then
known, was a very amateurish presentation
consisting a film-show at which the Cherry
Queen was chosen, followed the next day by a
street procession of floats, drum-majorettes, etc,
and an open-air programme at which not very
much happened. The grand Cherry Ball was,
however, a great success.
Today the presentation is very professional
and slick and the whole programme caters for
a wide variety of tastes.
To the best of our knowledge the Cherry
The whisky tasting workshops proved so popular that they are being brought back
by popular request. Seen in action here is Alex Cameron from UDV.
Festival it is the oldest crop festival in South
Africa
The Jaycees ran the festival from 1968 to
1985. After Jaycees disbanded in 1985, a community committee took over the organising and
running of the festival. This committee is made
up each year out of representatives of various
sections of the community.
The history of
cherries in South
Africa and the
festival
C
herries have pleased the palates of food lovers for centuries. Their ruby-red colour and
sweet taste won cherries a noble place on the
tables of Roman conquerors, Greek citizens,
and Chinese noblemen. German missionaries
brought cherries to South Africa by ship with
early settlers in the 1900's.
The first successful cherry trees were planted
in South Africa in 1905 on the farm Platkop in
the Clocolan district after Harry Pickston had
contacted German missionaries in South Africa with questions about growing cherries.
A year later five hectares of trees were
brought to Clocolan to be planted on the farm.
The varieties included Giant Heidelfinger, Bing,
Early River, Early Red, and Elton. Some of the
original cherry trees can still be seen on the
farm today. These cultivars are still grown in
the area.
It is estimated that there are 500 hectares of
cherry trees in the Eastern Free State concentrated mainly in the Ficksburg, Clocolan and
Fouriesburg area. There are approximately 250
trees per hectare and the average yield per hectare is 10 tons.
Maraschino cherries, most often used in
drinks and in ice cream sundaes, are made from
sweet cherries. The maraschino cherry originated in Yugoslavia and northern Italy where
merchants added a liqueur to a local cherry
called the "Marasca."
The first Cherry Festival was held in Ficksburg in 1967, launched by the local Jaycees with
a street parade the through town, a Cherry Ball
and the crowning of a Cherry Queen.
The Festival has grown over the years into a
week-long event during which more than 20
000 people visit the festival.
The Festival is beneficial to Ficksburg because it creates employment and is the town’s
largest marketing tool.
The committee responsible for organising the
event consists of 15 members who do all the
work on a voluntary basis .
Ficksburg is situated in the heart of the Eastern Free State and boasts a cosmopolitan population.
This year will see the 35th Cherry Festival
take place from 11 to 16 November 2002.

Full Military Tattoo during exercising
of Freedom of the Town
T
his year’s Cherry Festival will have a strong
military flavour—in the nicest possible
way—with a military tattoo as the Bloemspruit
Air Force base exercises its right to the Freedom of Ficksburg, three military bands, a flypast of helicopters from the Bloemspruit Air
Force Base and military spotlights illuminating
Imperani Mountain.
The latter will make the festivities visible to
passing spacecraft and satellites when Imperani
Mountain is lit up on the Thursday, Friday and
Saturday evenings with spotlights provided by
the Bloemspruit Air Force Base.
So powerful will the beam of this spotlight
be, that it will be visible from the moon!
The Bloemspruit Air Force Base, which
seems fast to be becoming an integral part of
the festival, will once again exercise its right to
the Freedom of Ficksburg—this time at a sunset military tattoo on the Friday evening at
which 25 South African flags will be ceremonially lowered during a fly-past of helicopters
from the base.
The Festival Grounds will echo to the sound
of marching feet, trumpets and drums as about
120 men from the Air Force base, led by the
Air Force band, march—with colours flying and
bayonets fixed—past the saluting stand there.
Only a military unit on which the freedom of
a town or city has been conferred is entitled to
march through a town with bayonets fixed and
colours flying.
During the colourful ceremony, which begins at 17:00 on Friday, Ficksburg will once
again pay tribute to the Bloemspruit Air Force
Base and the units of which it is comprised.
The Mayor of the Setsoto Municipal Council, Ms Malithare Molete, accompanied by senior Air Force officers and other dignitaries, will
be on the podium to take the salute.
The Freedom of Ficksburg was conferred on
the Bloemspruit Air Force Base on 23 September 1992.
The tradition of conferring the freedom of
entry to a town on a military unit is a very old
tradition, dating from Medieval times, and symbolises the trust which the civilian population
places in the unit or regiment concerned.
The freedom of a town or city is an honour
which is not often or lightly conferred.
Learn the gentle art
of Fly-tying
T
his is an ideal opportunity to marry craftsmanship with reality of making your own
flies. Renowned fly-tier, Jonathan Rodgers of
Clear Stream Fishing Flies, and nationally-acclaimed local fisherman, Louis du Toit will, be
sharing their talents and teaching the art of fly
tying.
At the workshop you will be taught the intricate skills of tying a fly. Duration of the workshop is approximately one hour. Tickets are
available at the Cherry Festival Office at the
showgrounds. The venue for this is at the Workshop Marquee at the Festival
Drumming—the heartbeat
of the soul
White Horse brand manager, Anton Twigg, strutting his stuff at last year’s Pick ’n

D
Make cheese at home
rumming is the rhythm of the heartbeat—
of the soul! The drum is the instrument of
Africa, traditionally used by people to communicate over distances, to dance to and to weave
magical spells with.
This year, at the Cherry Festival, we will have
a special area at the Festival Grounds where
drum circles will be held throughout the Friday and Saturday for you to take part in.
For R30.00 you will have a 50 minute session with Master Drummer, Niyan, and instructor, Theo, who will teach you how to play, even
if you have never played a drum before. Drums
will be provided. Groups are limited to 25 persons per session.
F
ood technologists Cherry van Wyk and
Retha Carelson of the ARC Dairy Institute
at Irene will demonstrate various techniques of
domestic cheese making. Each workshop will
focus on one particular cheese. The art of making these cheeses will be adapted to the kitchen
for home use purposes. The duration of each
workshop will be one hour. You will be taught
how to make Feta, cottage cheese, yoghurt and
Mozzarella. Tickets are available at the Cherry
Festival Office at the showgrounds. The venue
will be the Workshop Marquee at the Festival
Grounds.
Horse and Cart Rides around the town

through Ficksburg, drawn by a horse and
cart!
Travelling through the town on the back of a
horse-drawn cart will be like a trip down
memory-lane for vivitors to the Cherry Festival, but with additional pleasure of sipping a
glass of Champagne and enjoying a bowl of
cherries whilst you do so.
Rides commence outside the town hall, travelling up Piet Retief Street, turning into Brand
Street and continuing down Kerk Street before
turning into Voortrekker Street via the NG
Church and back to the town square. The ride
is approximately 20 minutes long and costs

Tropical Heat fast
making its mark
T
his is a band which puts its heart and soul
into its music and is a testimony to enduring friendship which has guaranteed them a
name to be remembered.
Tropical Heat was started by a bunch of high
school friends in 1994 in Springbok. These determined young musicians started off by playing at school parties and local functions. They
soon proved so popular that they were continuously booked up and a name had to be found.
That was the birth of Tropical Heat.
Eight years later the members of the band
are still together. They have been signed up for
two years by White Horse Whisky as the inhouse band for the brand. Now based in Cape
Town, Tropical Heat is fast leaving its mark on
the South African music industry.
They have played at national festivals and
top venues in South Africa. Tropical Heat will
be the official festival band at this year’s Cherry
Festival.

WHITE HORSE WHISKY HERITAGE BLENDS SMOOTHLY
WITH SOUTH AFRICAN FESTIVALS
E
mbodying everything connected with the
rich tapestry of south African culture, the
35th annual White Horse Whisky Ficksburg
Cherry Festival—South Africa’s longest running crop festival and the world’s second
oldest—takes place from 11 to 16 October.
At the festival a cornucopia of platteland
delights, livestock judging, equestrian events,
rural arts and crafts, dancing and music, not to
mention Afrikaans culinary delights, will feature.
Said White Horse Fine Old Scotch Whisky
brand manager Anton Twigg: “The brand is
linked irrevocably to South African music, theatre and arts and culture. This festival at
Ficksburg echoes 300 plus years of tradition
and we are honoured to be associated.
“We regard the support of rural festivals seriously and are delighted to take our brand to
the people that savour it and join the imagery
of the white horse, embodying the spirit of freedom and independence associated with the
whisky.
“White Horse offers a free, unbridled personality and a distinctive individuality making
it stand out in an age of increasing conformity.
A blend of 35 whiskies, White Horse was
created in 1890 and is a top global seller.
At its heart are three stunning single malts,
powerful, prancing Lagavulin from the western isle of Islay, honeyed and sweet, Glen Elgin
and Craigellachie, from Speyside. Bonded they
help to give White Horse its distinctive fullbodied, peaty flavour.
The brand, familiar as just White Horse,
founded in Britain in 1890, boasts a proud, romantic “bloodline” which is traced to some of
the most colourful characters in Scottish whisky
history and the legend lives on.
“The brand is going from strength to strength.
It’s the choice for the down-to-earth lads and
lassies and for those with heritage at heart and
a true sense of belonging,” Twigg said.
Hone your taste at a special
Whisky Tasting
T
astings will expand your whisky horizons!
If you have always wanted to know what
goes into the blending of your favourite scotch,
why not attend one of the White Horse whisky
tastings to be will be held on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the Cherry Festival.
It won’t take you long to appreciate that
there's more to the enjoyment of whisky than
sipping that favourite dram.
With comparative glasses before you and
under the guidance of a presenter steeped in
whisky know-how, you will find yourself able
to pick up subtle nuances of flavour you hadn't
noticed before.
It is interesting that all Scotch whiskies have
exactly the same ingredients—pristine spring
water, malted barley smoked over peat and left
to mature in the soft mists that swirl above the
heather.
But it's where the whisky comes from in Scotland, the blenders' skill and the shape of the
potstill that all influence the flavours. A whisky
tasting makes these flavours come alive.
Throughout the tasting you will experience
the development of the whisky as the blender
intended. In the process you will be challenged
to put your palate to the test and it will take
just one tasting for you to appreciate that, while
your favourite tipple may be one of the better,
if not the best on the market, there's a wide
world of whisky out there waiting to tantalise
your taste buds.
Tickets for the tastings are R20 per person.
For more information on times and venues for
the tastings, please contact the Cherry Festival
Office at the showgrounds
Dowwe Dolla, South Africa’s dizziest blonde, is sure to have the audience rolling in the aisles! She is one of the
artists who will be performing in the special open-air theatre on the town square.

Five different breeds to be

D
O
owwe Dolla is single again. She might be
blonde, but she's not so stupid as to stay
married. Dolla has learned her lesson—you
don't get anywhere lying down—so now she’s
doing it staan-staan!
And believe me, gentleman, when Dowwe
Dolla stands up, no Viagra is needed. The country's brightest blonde is a stiff one to compete
with when thinking on her feet, so if you're a
Dowwe Dolla virgin, be warned that she might
insist on your trying out her own range of
Dowwe Dolla condoms. Unlike our president,
Dolla doesn't see the ‘complot’. She supports
the Arrive Alive Campaign. As jy ry, ry veilig!
In South Africa a theatrical year without
Dowwe Dolla is incomplete. For more that five
years Dolla has had the nation laughing at themselves. Her previous shows, Staatslet,
6
Krismisdoos, Ereksie '99, Vigs en Gesond and
Dolla Gee Haar Beste, have had sold-out runs
throughout the country.
The bright actress behind the ditzy blonde is
Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck, who received an
FNB Vita Award (2001) for her comedic talents
in sustaining this lovable character. Even though
Dolla can't stand her, Margit has a soft spot for
this character whose mouth can run the Comrades, while her mind finds it hard to get out of
bed. Margit has a Masters' Degree in Drama
from the University of Stellenbosch and when
she is not visiting Dolla, she is busy with radio
work, producing and children's theatre.
The man who puts the words into Dolla's
lolly-filled mouth is Hennie van Greunen, who
is also well known for his texts for productions
like Blougat, Lyf, Junkiedrome and Wydekloof.

ver the years the Ficksburg Agricultural
Society’s annual horse how has gone from
strength to strength and this year we will be
showing no fewer than five breeds here.
It is a great privilege for the society have been
picked to present the National Pinto Championships in Ficksburg for the very first time.
Apart from this event, there will also be
Frieslands, Saddle Horses, miniature horses,
crossbreeds, Appaloosas, Welsh ponies, Arabians and American Quarter Horses on show.
As an added attraction, there will be a fouryear-old Clydesdale stallion on show which has
been imported from Germany.
This friendly giant is 18 hands high and
weighs 1.3 tons — a sight which no-one attending the show dare miss.
An attempt will also be made to break the
world high-jump record for miniature horses.
Soweto String Quartet turns preconceptions
of classical music on their head
O
ver three albums the Soweto String Quar
tet has created some of the most singular
music to have emanated from South Africa, effortlessly melding the rigours of classical music (in which they are all trained) with their
homeland's traditional rhythms and musical
styles. Zebra Crossing, Renaissance and Millennia have earned the Johannesburg-based
group several awards, platinum sales and the
adulation of music fans around the globe, many
of whom have been able to see SSQ play live
through the group's extensive European touring schedule.
Now comes SSQ's fourth album. It is titled
simply Four in homage to its place in their recorded repertoire, but also to signify just how
important the contribution of each of the
group's four members are to SSQ's unique sound.
Explains Reuben Khemese (cello): "This album has indeed been a challenge since its point
of departure was to capture the uniqueness and
individuality of each of the four members of
the Soweto String Quartet. Our aim was to
achieve this without moving away from the
group's inherent pulse and we believe that we've
have managed to capture both in the most organic way."
What this creative coupling has resulted in is
an album that reflects the music of South Africa
from the 1950s to today; one that moves with
uncontrived ease from hymns to gospel, pop,
dance, kwela and kwaai-jazz, all performed in
the quartet's inimitable style.
At the onset of the project, SSQ had a particular vision in mind. Explains Thami: "We
wanted to bring a whole new attitude to this
record. By that I mean that as a group, we've
realised that pushing our musical boundaries
means looking at the world around us with fresh
eyes and we kept this idea, this musical vision,
uppermost in our minds throughout the recording process."
As album opener Victory's elegant and lyrical melody reaches your ears, and the interplay
between SSQ's four instruments hits its magnificent stride, you'll be swept away on a musical journey of the most sublime kind. From the
gentle kwela rhythms of Straight Lingo, to the
smooth jazz undertones that put a groove into
Shadile, the contemplative likes of Reflections
Of Faith, Freedom's exhilaration, the joyous
Sangena and others, Four moves through a musical terrain that's as compelling as it is just
plain enjoyable. At times whimsical (check out
the hand-clap effects on Endurance), at others
exquisite (Song For Mama) Four is a triumph
of musicality and invention. And making interpretation of the album's music instantly accessible for listeners are the extensive liner notes
that accompany each track, where each of the
composers sketches the inspiration and meaning behind their particular piece of music.
SSQ have just returned from an extensive UK
tour—a repeat of the group's success in 2000
when they charmed their way through the island in a 30-plus date visit. This year, SSQ's
UK tour included a 50-plus headlining trawl
through the territory, an inaugural appearance
at the legendary Reading WOMAD Festival
and multi-dates at The Edinburgh Fringe Festi-
val—all of this once more signifying just how
easily the group's music can be transported out
of South Africa.
As has become customary during SSQ's many
international and domestic appearances, their
recent reviews have been glowing. Said the Daily
Mail of 4 August: "...take a string quartet, three
brothers and a friend from the South African
township of Soweto. Add a five-piece rhythm
section that pulsates as the players hit their
stride, dancing until they are running flat out on
the spot, knees lifted high, without missing a
note. The long walk to freedom is over—the
new South Africa is up and running and the
musical result is exhilarating."
For their part, SSQ gains immeasurably from
experiencing new places. "We love having the
opportunity to spread our sound to many different people," says Sandile Khemese. "Each
time we travel we meet amazing people and
have wonderful experiences all of which have
an input, in some way, into the creation of our
new songs."
With Four, SSQ once more prove they are
amongst South Africa's musical elite. Not in a
way that puts them out of touch of the sprawling township where they all grew up but rather
as a group that is able to stay true to its South
African roots, while crafting an internationalist
sound that's unique and speaks to all music fans.

Cherry pip spitting and
loads more fun events
T
here will be lots of fun events centred on
the town square during the 35th Cherry
Festival, which promise great fun for
participants and spectators alike.
The Highlands Cherry Competitions will
take place on Tuesday, 12 November 2002 and
consists of a variety of fun and strongman events
at which the well-known strongman, Gerrit
Badenhorst, will also make an appearance.
Cherry Pip Spitting Competition
The Cherry Pip Spitting Competition, for
instance, will establish who can spit a cherry
pip the furthest. There will be sections for men
and ladies.
Thomas Steinhauer of Switzerland holds he
world record for men by spitting a cherry pip
25.22m. Conchita Kohler, also of Switzerland,
holds the world record for women by a cherry
pip spitting 19.01m.
Both these winners' records were recorded at
Attiswil in Switzerland in August 2000. There
were 600 participants at this event. (Source
August 2000 Sunday Times)
Highlands Strongman
The Bale Hoisting competition will see how
many times a 45-kg straw bale can be hoisted
on a hoist 5-m high in a time of 1m30sec.
The Log Chopping contest is a real strong
man test. Logs will be placed on stilts and contestants have to chop through them with an
axe. (Refer to the Scottish tradition)
The Sandstone Challenge will test the
strength of contestants. There will be five barrels, beside which is a sandstone block. Chal-
lengers have to lift each block onto the barrel. The block weight increases by 10kg with
each barrel.
The Cherry Drinks Run around the town
square is also known as the Waiters' Run.
Each entrant, who is to be dressed as a
waiter, will be given a tray with a bottle of
wine and a wineglass. They have to pour a
glass of wine out of the bottle and, with one
hand only, hold the tray and run around the
town square without spilling anything.
Get out those delivery bikes for the Delivery Bike Race and do one lap around the Town
Square.
In a more serious vein, there is an open
competition for the best cherry products in
the following categories:
Cherry Liqueur
Cherry Spirits
Cherry Wine
Cherry Jam
Cherry Pie
Cherry Dessert
Windpomp en slinger!
J
oin the Campbells, one of South Africa's
most popular groups, who will be performing at Sleepers from 20:00 on Wednesday, 13
November.
They will be joined by that other well-liked
group, Tropical Heat, and there will be a small
cover charge.
This event is sure to get you into the swing
of the festival, so let your hair down and get
ready to party all week while you enjoy the
hospitality Ficksburg has to offer.
There will be late-night entertainment for the
night owls every night at Sleepers.
Don’t forget the ‘street breakfast’ at this
popular eatery on Wednesday morning.

Witblits and mampoer—a
demonstration
N
ationally-acclaimed Witblits ‘stoker’,
Alwyn Swart, and veteran brewer, Johan
Klopper, will demonstrate the fine art of distilling Cherry Witblits legally in the traditional
way.
Daily demonstrations will be from Thursday
to Saturday at the Festival Grounds.
Alwyn Swart is acclaimed as one of the nation’s best distillers. Samples will be available
for tasting at their venue.
Jennifer Zamudia—the singer
of purple sensations
T
he talented Jennifer grew up in Velddrif in
the Western Cape, moving to Pretoria after
completing her school career, and four years
ago turned to a professional singing career.
She has been labelled the newest artist in
South Africa to sing sting music and she has
marketed herself as ‘the singer of purple sensations’. Jennifer has graced the music festival
stages in South Africa capturing an intense following.
Jennifer can be seen on the main stage at the
Showgrounds as well as at various late night
venues. This up-and-coming artist is a mustsee, so make sure not to miss this talented artist’s performances at this year’s Cherry Festival.

Rock the night away
with Beeskraal
B
eeskraal is one of South Africa's up-and
coming-rock bands. Formed in Pretoria
four years ago they are taking the youth of South
Africa by storm.
Beeskraal have made a unique name for themselves by combining American rock structures
with traditional South African instruments,
which include the banjo and the concertina. This
concept has earned them the a place in the face
of rock music in South Africa.
Beeskraal will form part of this year’s Cherry
Festival, performing on the main stage on Friday, 15 November as part of Opskop met die
Boere.
This will be your opportunity to rock till the
wee hours whilst enjoying Afrikaans Rock at
its best in Ficksburg.

Here’s a chance to pick your
own cherries!
M
ost people are familiar with the glossy
cherries neatly packed in punnets for sale
in supermarkets all over the country, but have
you seen Ficksburg's 'red gold' on the trees in
the orchids where they are grown?
If not, you probably also haven't seen how
asparagus—the other agricultural product so
typical of this area—is grown on the lands, or
processed either to be sold fresh or for canning.
While you are here for the Cherry Festival,
you will have the opportunity to see both if
you take advantage of the organised tours to
some of the large cherry and asparagus farms in
the district.
During the outing to the cherry farm, visitors will tour the beautiful orchards as well as
the huge packing shed on the farm Ionia about
18 km outside of Ficksburg.
There visitors will not only be told about
cultivation and packing of cherries, but, while
they are in the orchards, they will also be able
to pick cherries from the trees to eat while they
wander around. Each will also receive a 500g
carton to pick cherries to take away with them.
In addition they will be able to sample Ionia
Cherry Liqueur and be given a 50 ml bottle of
delicious liqueur to take away with them.
Asparagus Tour
During the tour of an asparagus farm, visitors will visit the lands where they can see asparagus in every stage of growth and see how
they are harvested.
They will be then be taken to a packing store
to see how asparagus are prepared for export
where they will also be able taste asparagus
prepared following a traditional German recipe
and will be given a sample of 300g of raw asparagus to take home.
Tours on the tour bus provided cost R75.00
per person, or R55.00 per person if they are
part of a tour group which has its own bus.
Tours will take place on Wednesday, 13 November, to Saturday, 16 November. Please see
the programme for tour times. For booking contact Cecile de Kock at 073 166 8189 or Bertha
Myburgh at 072150 5381 or Machiel Myburgh

The Campbells are coming!
T
he Campbell Brothers are real-life brothers Harry and Tony Campbell. Their musical influence and inheritance comes from their
father, Harry Campbell (senior), although, without their mother, I suppose they wouldn't exist.
Harry Campbell (senior) played with many
dance bands and well known country artists
before eventually deciding to pack it all in in
1988. His two sons then got hold of his old
equipment and learned to play and, although
Harry was only 12 at the time and Tony 10,
they managed to learn a few songs and with
two girls from the neighbourhood who could
play the piano and guitar, they were ready for
their first gig.
The gig went like a bomb and the kids’ band
became the talk of the neighbourhood. Primary
school came and went and so did the girls in
the band and when the brothers went to high
school they decided to continue playing music
as a duo, calling themselves the Campbell
Brothers.
Their popularity grew and grew as they
played in pubs, clubs, festivals and shows.
Then, in 1995, when both brothers had finished
high school, they realized that they would play
music for living for the rest of their lives.
Fortunately education always came first and
Harry studied for the motor trade and Tony is
a qualified electronic engineer (but I don't think
they'll ever do anything else but make music).
In the two years that followed, more and more
of the Afrikaans public booked the Campbell
Brothers and a new market opened up. In the
months that followed they focussed on the
Afrikaans ‘Langarm and Pop’ market.
Their newest release and second CD is entitled Rooi Rok Bokkie. It is an out-and-out party
CD with 26 stunning hits!
Join Harry and Tony at the Sleepers Street
Party on Wednesday night and on Friday and
Saturday at the Cherry Festival Grounds.
Meet Egoli’s Hennie
Smit at the Cherry
Festival
C
elebrity soap star Hennie Smit, better
known as Bertie in Egoli, will grace the
festival with his presence.
Born and educated in the Swartland, Hennie
will air his talent to amuse as Master of Ceremonies at the official opening and at Kids Say
the Weirdest Things, as well while as judging
various competitions and during a comedy
show with Francois and Elizabeth, and Ollie
Viljoen and his orchestra on the Friday evening.

Cutt Glas is nationally

T
here is only one group deserves to be called
the leading a capella group in South Africa
and that is Cutt Glas.
They recently released their fifth CD, Slegs
Glas Glas Only. This group of five ladies have
been nationally acclaimed throughout their
singing career, which started in 1990.
Cutt Glas can be seen on the main stage at
the Showgrounds on Thursday, 14 November.
The soothing sounds of the Odeion
String Quartet
T
he Odeion String Quartet was constituted
in August 1991 as the University of the Free
State’s permanent, full-time resident quartet,
giving its debut concert in the Odeion auditorium, its home on the university campus, the
following month.
In establishing this quartet, the University
of the Free State has followed the example of
many overseas universities, where it is an established tradition to house professional quartets. The Odeion String Quartet is at present
the only resident quartet at a South African
university, other string quartets functioning
largely on an ad hoc basis.
Apart from countrywide concerts in numerous cities and towns, the quartet has taken part
in music festivals as far afield as Norway, Zimbabwe and Botswana and has developed an extensive repertoire which is adapted for a variety of events.
For the first eight years of its existence, the
quartet comprised the same four players. That
changed when the previous leader, Derek Ochse,
retired at the end of 1999. The new leader, Juan
Mu oz (First Violin), joined the quartet in 1999.
Other members of the group are Abrie de Wet
(Second Violin), John Wille (Viola) and Michael
Haller (Violoncello).

There’ll be food for the soul
at floral festival
A
mongst all the hustle and bustle and razzmatazz that is the Cherry Festival, there
will also be food for the soul for those of a
more contemplative nature, where those thirsting after spiritual beauty will be able to find it
at an exhibition entitled ‘Flowers in Praise’.
The members of the Women’s Auxiliary of
the Ficksburg Methodist Church will be presenting this flower festival with a difference
from 15 to 17 November in the Methodist
Church and Hall in Toorn Street.
The church and the hall will be havens of
tranquillity and beauty filled with flower arrangements depicting the arrangers’ favourite
passages of Scripture.
Thanksgiving
The organisers see the flower festival as an
act of worship and thanksgiving.
They feel that in these stressful times it is
good to stop and contemplate the beauty of a
flower, which exudes serenity, charms the soul
and speaks of that which is God-given and real.
Church’s coloured glass windows
a unique work of art
A
One of the colourful windows
in the Anglican Church
ll Saints’ Church, Ficksburg, is known far
and wide for its beautiful coloured glass
windows featuring the indigenous fauna and
flora to be found in the district.
These unique windows, which can best bes
described as a glass collage, are a major tourist
attraction in the town.
They were created over a period of time by a
talented local artist, Helen Dickson, who used
coloured glass from all sorts of sources—bottles, dishes and tumblers, as well as some glass
imported from Italy—to create them.
The coloured glass was broken and glued
onto ordinary window glass in layers, giving a
three-dimensional appearance, as well as cre-
ating the required shades.
As the sun moves during the day, those inside the church can see the agapanthus, protea,
lobelias, erythrina and other flowers come
ablaze with luminous colour.
In All Saints’ Church, God is glorified in the
beauty of his creation rather than in images of
dead saints or biblical scenes.
Conducted tours
Come and view the historic church and its
unique windows from 10:00 to 18:00 on Thursday, 14 and Friday, 15 November when conducted tours will be given. Cold drinks will be
available in the Garden of Remembrance and
donations will be welcome.

Big brass band bringing the
circus to town!
T
his year’s Cherry Festival will have a strong
military flavour—in the nicest possible
way—with a military tattoo, military band, a
fly-past of helicopters from the Bloemspruit
Air Force Base and military spotlights
illuminating Imperani Mountain.
Then, in complete contrast, the rousing music of the big brass bands will also form part of
what promises to be one of this year’s most
exciting innovations—a spectacular circus performance in the main arena.
Biggest and best
All these, however, form only a small part of
the programme for what is being billed as the
biggest and best Cherry Festival ever.
The three military bands will also be part of
another exciting innovation when they lead the
circus into the arena. Yes, this year’s Cherry
Festival will see 10 world-class circus acts in
the main arena as part of the entertainment on
the Saturday afternoon—something which is
sure to thrill young and old alike.
The 35th Cherry Festival is brimming with
new ideas and promises something to suit
every taste.
There will be horse and cart rides—complete with champagne—for which a number
of carts in everyday use have been specially
dollied up, on a route past some of Ficksburg’s
historic and picturesque landmarks.
For those who yearn for the good old days,
there will be Opskop met die Boere in the
main arena on the Friday evening.
The audience will be seated on straw bales
in a ‘lager’ lit by lanterns where they can enjoy traditional potjiekos as they listen to
Stoepstories hosted by Hennie Smit of Egoli
fame, after which they will be entertained by
the irrepressible Dowwe Dolla, as well as
Francois and Elizabeth Fourie, Ollie Viljoen
and Jammies Jamneck before ‘lang-arming’

Following on the success of last year’s workshops, this year will see workshops on whiskytasting, beer-tasting, fly-tying and
cheesemaking adapted especially to the domestic situation. Visitors will also be able to see
some top chefs in action in Pick 'n Pay’s celebrity cooking demonstrations.
Baby crawling
A baby crawling race and ‘kids say the funniest things’ event, hosted by Hennie Smit, are
also sure to be hits.
To add to the festive air in town, there will
be a competition for hanging baskets and local
businesses will decorate their windows for the
window competition.
Other highlights will be the Highlands
Strongman competition, a cherry pip spitting
contest—the world record is 38m—and the
Windpomp and Slinger street party, featuring
the Campbell Brothers and their Rooirok

Cherries and asparagus: Pick 'n
Pay Show us how
P
ick 'n Pay have put together some of South
Africa’s top chefs as well as local cooks to
demonstrate just how easily it is to cook with
cherries and asparagus. These experts will be
flocking to Ficksburg to teach the rest of us
how easily great dishes can be put together with
ingredients typical of our area.
Nicolas van der Walt, who is currently a
member of South Africa’s senior chefs’ team,
will be cooking at the festival. Nicolas specialized as a pastry chef and is currently running
@ the square restaurant in Clarence.
He trained at the Savoy Hotel in London and
in Johannesburg. His work has taken him overseas, giving him invaluable experience, and
he has been decorated as one of the leading
chefs in South Africa in his field.
Local asparagus guru, Margie Olser, will be
making her appearance at the festival once again
this year. Margie, who has just published her
14
first book, called Celebrating Asparagus, will
teach you the correct method for preparing asparagus. She lives on a farm between
Fouriesburg and Slabberts and has been cooking asparagus for more years than she can remember. She has an infectious personality,
which shows in her cooking, and this workshop is definitely not to be missed.
Meei Dukhi cooks asparagus and cherries the
Chinese way. She comes from an internationally acclaimed family of chefs and her family
runs some of the top restaurants in Taipei and
Los Angeles.
Meei trained under the watchful eye of her
father and brothers and her Far Eastern cooking flair will be put to the test here.
All the cooking demonstrations will be free
of charge. Seats will be available on a firstcome-first-served basis. Please check the programme for exact times of daily demonstrations.

A message from the
Festival Co-ordinator
O
ne of the best moves I could have made
three years ago was to get involved with
the Cherry Festival. I have really enjoyed the
challenges put before me and the experience
has been invaluable.
A festival cannot be conceived by one person
alone, but requires a whole committee of
dedicated people who put their hearts and souls
into the project.
There have been trying moments when tempers rode high. This was not in vain, but resulted in presenting the best ideas to ensure the
best productions possible.
The Cherry Festival has been rated as one of
the top festivals in South Africa, especially in
the “platterland”.
This is due to a partnership between the festival and the sponsors. As we all know, White
Horse is the main sponsor once again and without them and the partnership between other
sponsors, which include Pick ‘n Pay, Radio
Oranje, South African Breweries, Nampak,
MMC, Coca Cola, Supa Quick and the South
African Air Force, who are of the larger
sponsors, it would not have been possible to
present a festival of this calibre. I thank you.
I salute the smaller sponsors, who are equally
important, for their contribution to the town.
Without the interest of sponsors, the festival
would not be possible and Ficksburg would not
survive.
One sponsor that I have to say a special thank
you to is the Ficksburg Municipality. Without
their dedication this festival could not take
place.

One question that is always put to me is that
of whether this festival is better than the previous year’s festival. Each festival has its own
merits and every festival I have been involved
in is special.
Last year the festival attracted 18 000 people and it is you, the public, that are the biggest
advertisement for the festival.
To my team at St. Ives, Erica, Mary and Louis
this project could not be possible without you.
Thank you for supporting the dreams we
make a reality.
