President’s Message
Dear fellow artists,
The year ahead holds some changes
for us. There will be no Burien Arts Gallery,
and we will have to find a new venue for
our juried show. We will also have some
newer members appointed to the board,
and some other ideas for our group. This
holds the promise of many opportunities.
Our club did exceptionally well at the
Annual Cove Show and our Christmas
Luncheon was a great success. With
the help and enthusiasm of all of our
members, we can make next year even
better. This is our challenge and it will be
an exciting one. I wish you all a very happy
and healthy New Year!
—Nancy Fulton

Snow Scenes I Love!
Since winter is upon us once again (judging by last
week’s weather), I start to think about winter
paintings. In Seattle we generally don’t like the
snow so much, but it certainly does make a nice
change from the rain. When I saw Tracy LeMoine's
winter painting at the BAG, I decided to share this
link to some of the best winter paintings by many
notable artists. huffingtonpost.com
Hope you enjoy them!

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes,
then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself,
changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and
more importantly, you're doing something.

December Luncheon Highlights
January 2017
(Photos & text: Janet Price)
A good time was had by all at the December Christmas Luncheon! The food, conversation and
cookies were all great. Tracy LeMoine put together a
door prize in a top hat, and Shannan Folino won it
with the bejeweled snowflake under her chair.
Tom Fletcher announced the financial results of
the Cove Show; we sold more art this year than in
the past several years. Hooray for that! (Details at the
January meeting.) Sharon McConnell passed out
checks to the participating artists.
Burien Arts gave out certificates of appreciation
to all BAG volunteers at their last opening reception,
and a plaque to AU for all its contributions to the
gallery. Janet Price distributed certificates to a
number of artist volunteers.

January Program — Marianne Perkins
Images © Marianne Perkins
Although she now considers herself a
“Northwesterner”, Marianne Perkins grew up
in Chicago and spent her teen years hanging
around the Chicago Art Institute. It was there
she discovered her love for painting and a
passion for black eye-liner.
Marianne has a BFA from the College of
Charleston, and studied art in Korea,
Denmark, and on the island of Guam. She is
a Signature Member of the Northwest
Watercolor Society, and has shown her work
in numerous regional art shows and venues. She is well known for her massive
collection of art supplies, which she uses in the “a la trial and error technique”. She is
currently the instructor/mentor for the Tukwila Community Center’s Open Studio
painting group. For the January program, Marianne will demonstrate her techniques
for using oil pastels. A Word About Membership…. Harry Langen
Artists United has gained a number of new members this year, and it’s great to see their enthusiasm in the group.
Meanwhile, there are members who have not renewed for various reasons. In the near future, Membership will be
contacting former members to invite their comments relating to how they view the club. If you know any past
members, please engage them in a conversation regarding Artists United Club. Of course active members are also
invited to respond at any time with comments/suggestions for the club. We have a great group of artists, and as with
any organization, there is a continuing need for improvement in our activities and the way we do business.
Thank you, and please feel free to send me email with your comments: [email protected]

The National Christmas Tree
The tradition of the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn began with President Calvin
Coolidge in 1923. That year a 48 foot Balsam Fir from Vermont was decorated with 2,500 electric bulbs in
red, white, and green. It served as the first National Christmas Tree and was lit on Christmas Eve. Today
the tradition continues and is one of the most beloved holiday events in Washington DC.
Christmas Tree Trivia
The first record of a Christmas tree on display was in the 1830s by German settlers in Pennsylvania.
Christmas trees have been sold commercially in the United States since about 1850.
Christmas trees take 6-8 years to mature, and are grown in all 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska.
California, Oregon, Michigan, Washington, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are the top
Christmas tree producing states.
Most Christmas trees are grown on farms, and 100,000 people are employed in this tree industry.
The number of Christmas trees produced each year is approximately 34 to 36 million.
The best selling trees are Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, and White Pine.
The tallest living Christmas tree is believed to be the 122-foot, 91-year old Douglas fir in the town of
Woodinville, WA.
Thomas Edison’s assistants came up with the idea of electric lights for Christmas trees.
In 1912, the first community Christmas tree in the United States was erected in New York City.
In 1923 the first National Christmas Tree was erected on the South Lawn of the White House.
In 1931 the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree tradition began in New York City.
In 1945 President Harry Truman lit the tree, which had not been lit since 1941, and delivered his
Christmas message to the nation.
In 1963 the National Christmas Tree was not lit until December 22nd because of a National 30-day period
of mourning following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
In 1979 the National Christmas Tree was not lit, except for the top ornament, in honor of the American
hostages in Iran.
In 1984 the National Christmas Tree was lit on December 13th with temperatures in the 70s, making it
one of the warmest tree lightings in U.S. history.
In 2007, at the request of the White House, GE LED Christmas lights were used, making the National
Christmas Tree more energy efficient than ever before. GE has designed the National Christmas Tree
since 1963, producing and donating all the lighting and decorations.
