Salva spends some nights in an old woman’s barn, but she leaves without Salva because she can travel safer without him. 4. Another woman agrees to take Salva with their group. We learn the Nuer (Nya’s tribe) and the Dinka (Salva’s tribe) have been fighting for a long time over land with easier access to water. 5. The group walks for days and are starving. Buska (from the Jur-chol tribe) leads them to a tree with bees. They get honey to eat that night. 6. Salva makes a new friend, Marial. Salva worries where they are walking to. Marial says “East of Sudan is Ethiopia” (30). Marial tells Salva not to worry because if they walk east long enough they will walk all around the world and end up in Sudan again. 7. Salva’s uncle joins the group. He uses his gun to shoot a topi. Everyone eats that night but they vomit the food because they have been starving for so long. They are in the land of the Atout tribe (the people of the lion). Marial is eaten by a lion while everyone sleeps. 8. They travel east to the Nile River. They build boats. Fishermen they meet in middle of Nile on an island warn them to take lots of water when they cross the Akobo Desert. 9. Will take three days to cross desert. Salva loses toenail. They walk for one and a half years. 1,200 boys along with Salva arrive in Kenya. Salva is now twenty-two years old when they reach the Kakuma Refugee Camp. Conditions are just as bad there. Salva and some others head to the Ifo Refugee camp, but it is no better. Michael, an aid worker from Ireland teaches Salva English. There are rumors that 3,000 boys will be sent to America. After not seeing his name on many lists, Salva finally gets his chance to head to America. The list shows, “Salva Dut – Rochester, New York” (89). Salva learns his mother is still alive and living in a village. His father never gave up hope that Salva was alive and he would find him. Salva wants to go see his 4 mother and siblings but it is too dangerous. He returns to Rochester but is trying to think of a way to help his people. Salva knows water is a precious resource in Sudan. He begins to fundraise by talking to people in groups (church groups) who make donations to help Salva bring water to Sudan. He is afraid to speak before a group at first, but finds people are interested and moved by his story. People make donations of money. Eventually Salva brings a well to Nya’s village. THEME – The theme is what the author is trying to tell you about life after reading this book. Theme can only be expressed in a full sentence (NOT ONE WORD like “friendship”). The theme of A Long Walk to Water is no matter how many struggles you have to go through it is how you respond to those struggles that show what kind of person you really are. As Salva is initially separated from his family when the rebels enter his village he is consumed with thoughts like, “Where are we going? Where is my family? When will I see them again?” (9). When Salva meets Marial it seems he has found a friend with similar circumstances; however, Salva has to suffer the terrible loss of his only friend when Marial is eaten by a lion while the group sleeps. As giving up is not an option, Salva continues on with his Uncle’s help and encouragement. Salva learns compassion when men ahead of them collapse in the desert and women from Salva’s group give them some of the little water they have left, putting their own lives in jeopardy. Another struggle Salva has to watch is when, “one of the men aimed his gun at Uncle. Three shots rang out. Then the men ran away” (63). Salva does not give up after his horrible murder, but later becomes the leader of 1,500 boys, the Lost Boys. 1,200 boys eventually reach the refugee camp in Kenya as Salva led them through a year-and-a-half walk. Salva then knows they key to his life is to learn English and finds an aid worker who teaches him. Salva struggles with English, but eventually learns it and gets the opportunity to come to Rochester, New York. In Rochester, Salva struggles with a lot of challenges like the weather, jobs, and education. He studies Business and eventually uses all the struggles he has faced and overcome in his life to inspire him to 5 want to bring water to the people and villages in Sudan. He begins talking to church groups and starts a not-for-profit organization. Eventually Salva brings a well to Nya’s viallage.
