It was a sad moment when Gus and Nicky Ferguson revealed that Carapace No.104 was the last issue of the magazine. It felt so much more of a loss, considering that the triumph of 100 issues had only recently been celebrated at Franschhoek 2014. What can one say? The magazine played such an important role in the varied and variable literary affairs of the country. In its pages you might have found a young, new writer published alongside a grizzled, shop-­‐worn old lag; an utterly quirky pen-­‐and-­‐ink drawing alongside a pellucid haiku; a piercing observation in clerihew form alongside a hilarious recollection in free verse. Over its lifetime, Carapace pretty much did it all, and we are all indebted to Gus and his team. Such a unique vision and service cannot be recreated. Even so, we have felt the need to start something that will go some of the way to providing another public space for poetry. To this end, we are launching a new publication, Stanzas. [
It will be a quarterly magazine for aspirant, established, formalist, free, serious and comic poets alike, focusing on poems, as well as the occasional review, interview, letter or artwork. Stanzas will be published by African Sun Press in association with the Left Field Poetry and the McGregor Poetry Festival. We invite you to subscribe to Stanzas. . . . . . . . .
