QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work.”
~Michael J. Jackson 1958 - 2009
8th and 9th Grade English students, were tasked with creating an original 10 lined poem. The
catch? Writing the poem onto something OTHER than a piece of paper, and which most people
would consider JUNK. The students did not disappoint, and the message was clear---Our students
are not only talented writers, but also very determined and imaginative young people.
Work Hard. Get Smart. Graduate from College.
High Expectations Equals Results.
Nothing less than Excellence.
Today is the Day we Make it Happen.
College/University of the Week
University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
UCLA is one of the world’s great research universities, number 11 in London’s
Times Higher Education rankings (2010-2011). Our faculty includes Nobel
Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, multiple MacArthur fellows and scores of
national academy members. Interdisciplinary teaching and research is a
particular strength, with initiatives in the arts, stem cells and other biosciences,
nanoscience, international studies and the environment.
Our freshmen and transfer students have a 91% success and progress rate –
that’s the percentage who graduate or remain in good standing after four years
(two for transfers). Many seniors choose capstone projects as part of their degree programs. The
UCLA campus is like a city in miniature, with our own restaurants, stores, museums and swimming
pools. Classrooms, labs and libraries bustle with activity. Gardens and plazas add to the welcoming
feel. And in the evening and on weekends there are public events that attract audiences from all
over Los Angeles: music, dance, lectures and NCAA sports
Yes, UCLA students spend a lot of time studying. But there's a lot of learning
that happens outside the classroom, from discovering new interests and
friends to cheering the Bruins at the Rose Bowl. Student groups get together
to celebrate Tet and Nowruz, share a luau and learn taiko drumming and
kendo.
Fully 94% of freshmen live on campus, in the residential area nicknamed
"The Hill." It's a short walk to classes or the library. And after class, there's
the nearby Sunset Canyon Recreation Center for swimming or tennis. Then,
a choice of dining halls. (Yes, you can eat with friends from another
residence hall, or just check on line to find which location is serving the food
you like best.)
There are almost 40,000 students at UCLA, roughly 27,000 undergraduates and 13,000 graduate
and professional students. The student body is diverse both in cultural and economic terms. As
many as 36% of UCLA undergraduates receive Pell Grants, given to students whose family income
is typically less than $50,000 (Fall 2010). International students account for 17% of graduate
students and 5% of undergraduates. U.S. undergraduate ethnicity includes 4% African American,
15% Hispanic, 33% White and 38% Asian/Pacific Islander. (Fall 2009 profile)
More than 9,500 undergraduates live as part of the on-campus community, in residence halls,
plazas and suites “on the hill.” About 4,000 undergrads belong to fraternities or sororities, and 32 of
those groups offer housing. Some 3,000 graduate students live in UCLA housing, with a major
complex in Westwood and additional complexes within 5 miles of campus.
